    1/2 mixed chicken

We hadn't visited for a while. I was pleasantly surprised. The service was smooth and inviting. We waited in line for a bit but that's the ambiance of Rips. Our food was good.

This place opened the year before my dad was born. He started coming here in 1955. I started in or around 1980. It's changed hands a few times since then. A fire. But it is still some of the best fried chicken you will ever have. Cash only. No reservations Plan accordingly or wait. But-and this is probably the nostalgia talking here-it's great. I feel closer to my dad here than at his graveside. Be patient be kind, bring a deck of cards and prepare for a no frills fantastic food experience. I am a little irritated their now "open for lunch" program doesn't include their famous fried chicken. I understand why but it is still irritating. I've been looking for better fried chicken ever since and I still haven't found it.

No time to cook or clean

I have been dying to try Ladd's chicken for years. My BFF always dissuaded me for the past 12 years but tonight he finally agreed. We arrived on Sat a lil before 7:00 pm. We entered and were unsure to seat ourselves or grab a table. We were abruptly stopped and told to order before we would be seated. It's a small menu but I was excited to try the chicken. We ordered and then were seated. The restaurant was nearly empty. The bar was stunning but the dining area looked like a newer truck stop. The tables were cramped and were seated near the kitchen. I was relieved to be seated and hoped to have a nice drink and cool off. Not sure if there was an ice shortage but I was served a warm flat soda. When I spoke to the waitress she apologized and said there were issues with the Pepsi, and offered me an alternative which was just as flat and warm. By now I was hoping to have cooled off. Nope the restaurant was a balmy 75 degrees. We were brought out our appetizers. Nice and chewy mushroom that had been sitting under the heat lamp. To sum it in one word - gross. I ordered coleslaw. I brought out a to go container filled with cabbage and topped with some sort of sauce. How hard is it to mix cabbage and a mix....apparently to difficult for the staff to do so they leave it up the customer. I am waiting and waiting and waiting (about an hour) in an near empty restaurant as the staff is closing up for the night. I finally decide to leave. My BFF told me the food was bad with terrible but now I would understand why he had such distain for this establishment. In short if you want to eat greasy chicken hours after you arrive in a terrarium whilst drinking warm soda as you view a disgusting kitchen then by all means stop by RIPs chicken. FYSA bring tums.

I mean if this doesn't get you aroused.

This review is long overdue as I've been here at least 6-8 times over the past 3+ years or so. First of all, I love Ladd and how amazing the community is as a whole that come together to help others via fundraisers, etc. The kindness of the people of Ladd comes through consistently and consider yourself lucky if strike up a conversation with a "Ladd-iator" while you are in line here or at the bar. Ok so I've been here with past management and current management and some minor changes have occurred for the better under new management. However, the overall taste of their chicken is mind blowing. Is it the best chicken ever? Well from the size of their pieces, yes. From the taste, yes. From the ability to reheat this chicken in the over and it still holds up, yes. So with those check marks, yes it's the best chicken I've ever had! Now plan 4 things when going here: 1st - prepare to wait both in line and for your food when ordered as their food is made to order. 2nd - bring cash as they are a cash only joint. 3rd - make sure you don't plan on doing too much after your meal as you will feel lethargic and not in the mood to do too much after and 4th and final tip is bring Bounty towels or some durable paper towels. This is why they get one less star is due to the flimsy napkins they provide. Ughh very frustrating as this chicken is yes, shocker here, a little greasy! Enjoy a Hamm's on tap as well and get yourself a side of hot sauce! Plenty of parking along the main street and limited parking in the back. Currently they are doing phone orders so plan accordingly and head to the back of the alley as they'll come and get your payment and deliver your food. I can't wait to dine in once things get back to normal!

We took the hour plus drive and were seated right away. First timers get free pickles with the basket of crispies...yummy! Onion rings were on special for $4 (YES please). Delicious! Got the 4 pc mixed chicken. Hubby got the tenders and rootbeer in a frosty glass mug. I also tried the coleslaw. Everything was absolutely delicious. The wing on my plate tumbled on the floor when the waitress tried to put it on the table but they made me another one, which I'm glad I didn't like best because it came at the end of the meal. Will definitely return...worth the trip.

Saturday lunch is definitely a priority. The chicken is good, but the strips and wings are better.

I didn't try the chicken, because I'm a vegan. But the pulled pork was outstanding. Good beer selection & funky vibes.

Best fried chicken and absolutely worth the drive. A no frills place with paper plates and paper bags-- long waits but soooooo worth it!

Super greasy and over battered, definitely leaves you with a stomach ache after you leave. Not sure what all the hype is about.

#6/2024 Well this was going to be a three star…read more They redeem themselves to get the four stars This is a small Red lobster it's not very big but here in the Peru Illinois area it is very very big with the locals at night it does a very slamming business most of the time at dinner time you will wait for a seat. I happen to be at the hotel right next door on this particular evening of the 23rd of Feb 2024. I walked over from the hotel and I was walked in and gave my name I said table for one like I said this is a small one they don't have a bar area or high bar seating area so the dining room's a little smaller. But nonetheless it was about a 15-20 minute wait I got a seat. I ordered myself a Michelob ultra to start with took a look at the menu I noticed a few newer things here they've got like a lobster or shrimp and grits kind of thing going on a couple new items on the menu I posted some of the stuff. Now one thing I did notice though the temperature was still winter in February although it warmed up a little bit the prior day it was still holding it about 28°f.. one thing that really surprised me here is a keep the thermostats at 68 that's not really acceptable in a dining establishment like this because it was actually kind of cool not cold. But one glaring thing I noticed was almost all the patrons had their jackets on the whole time they were eating and I simply asked the one girl I said why do they keep it that way she's like that just where they said it I said you know the temperature outside is kind of cold it's kind of cold in here I'm surprised they don't put it at least about 72 or 73 in the winter time. Basically that went in one ear and out the other lol. I didn't say nothing more about it. So I decided to get one of my favorites of the ultimate feast they now have it where you can build it your way which is pretty cool. My two choices I went with the lobster tail two of them. The other choices I went with was the shrimp scampi my favorite and I decided to not go with the Walt's fried shrimp but I took a shot at the shrimp skewer they said it's kind of buttered and fried and I said all right let's go for it. My regular two side choices I went with orzo rice and a Caesar salad and I asked for it before the meal. They brought out the classic cheddar bay biscuits and a few minutes later she brought out of Caesar salad that was good. The dinner came it looked very impressive the lobster tail was nice it could have been just a little bit warmer it wasn't super like hot but it was definitely warm the original rice was warm and the shrimp scampi was hot. But what was the shrimp skewer it was cold. I'm not really one of the fuss or complain but I was really let down about that and she came around and asked how was everything I said everything is really good except the shrimp skewer was kind of cold. Go ahead and put another order in for you to put it on the grill and cook you a fresh one I said that'd be cool appreciate it and can I also get a Diet Pepsi I had my beer. So she brought out the fresh one a few minutes later so that's where it redeemed itself to four stars and not staying at 3 that was very much appreciated. All in all it was a decent experience I would go back to that one but they definitely need to figure out why when the temperature is outside is not even above freezing you keep it at 68° inside the whole place I looked at three different thermostats and three different dining rooms LOL and every single one was set to 68. Not a fantastic Red lobster but not a lousy Red lobster we'll just leave it at that on first visit.

$47 for a bad steak and some broccoli. Asked for med rare, got cold in the center raw. Asked for it…read moreto be cooked some more, it came back marginally better, but with a weird taste. Paid my bill in full and said bye. Manager and server made no attempt to make it right . So eating here, I guess stick with the shrimp. I traveling for work and should have known better to eat at a chain like this. Too are too many other cool places to try in this town, my bad
