I will start with the positive : The coffee is good. That's the most important aspect of a coffee roaster. The negative : The employees have no concept of pricing or math. They sell 12oz bags of coffee. I asked if they sell coffee by the pound, they said yes and pointed to the 12oz bags I was already looking at. One of the baristas (there were 4 and I was the only customer) said "yes those bags, 12oz is a pound". That's news to me. I've lived my life thinking a pound was 16 oz. I decided to shatter his reality and inform him that 12oz is in fact 3/4 of 1 pound. So for kicks I asked how much is a pound. Ready for this answer? He actually recommended I go to the website and ask and someone would reply in a day or so. I get that our ridiculous imperial measurement system we have is confusing but that's what we use and anyone who's made it all the way through middle school should know this. And you could always just ask whatever AI you have to get an answer. I literally had to explain the formula to them. Anyways, it just really bothered me that these people are lying to their customers all day and leading them to believe they're buying a pound of coffee for $16 when a pound actually costs $21.33 per pound. read more

Rising Star was recommended to me by a regular, and I'm so glad I took his suggestion. The shop itself is adorable and welcoming, with plenty of drink options and fun specialty choices. I played it safe with an iced vanilla bean latte, while my sister went for the lavender oat milk latte, both were excellent. The espresso was incredibly smooth, honestly one of the smoothest I've ever had. The flavoring complemented the coffee without overpowering it, which I really appreciated. After ordering, there's a separate seating area where you can relax or get some work done. I loved that it's away from the ordering counter, so you're not distracted by the constant hustle and bustle. I'm not sure what all the hubbub labor issues were about this summer, but I just met some of the nicest people in the coffee business! Came in on a Wednesday morning because I wanted to see if the place had turned to shit and if the hired help was resentful in having the privilege of a job. The gentleman that took my order was very nice, smiled and quick to serve. The two woman doing the barista thing were laughing, moving to the beat of the music, and genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves. The patrons acted as if nothing ever happened. My 100th YELP REVIEW of the year!! Is there an award? LOL. I was supposed to write this review in early August 2024 but here we are at the end of September...haha. It's never too late for a Yelp review though. I visited Rising Star Coffee shop for the first time in July 2024 with a friend after church. I went to the Madison Ave. location in Lakewood. I don't drink or like coffee so I won't comment on that. I will say though that alot of locals do love Rising Star. MATCHA -- I don't drink coffee so I ordered a small Matcha drink (cold). The matcha tasted just okay but I remember it being either slightly sweet or not sweet at all. I normally ask what sweeteners go in a drink but for some reason I didn't. I do believe that the Matcha was made without dairy milk though which is what I prefer. I drank the drink slowly as I sat outside with my friend and I didn't finish it. It wasn't a bad drink and I love Matcha but this one didn't leave me "WOWed" so to speak. My friend ordered a cup of coffee but I don't remember the kind. He also got a chocolate chip cake or bread (it looked like banana bread but it was chocolate chip flavour). I had a small taste of his chocolate chip cake and it was good. If I'm in the area again and I need a drink, I may stop in to try a non-coffee drink. This is my local coffee shop. The Japanese style Iced Coffee is my order when the thermometer shows higher than 45 degrees Fahrenheit. I go for the hot drip if cooler out. The iced matcha latte is a fantastic Friday treat. The main reason for coming are the baristas. I come here every day and they are always so pleasant. This location was super close to our airbnb so we stoped over for breakfast. Loved that they had vegan and gluten free pastries in the case. Let me start out by saying that this was my second trip to RSCR in Lakewood. I have had the promised land before and Love it! So, we stopped in on a Saturday morning with a party of 6! We decided to order 4 PL drinks but then changed some of our milk choices. This is where it got sticky. The cashier was RUDE. She literally made a huffing noise, rolled her eyes and said in an angry voice, OK what do you want?!?! How many oat milks?! Not friendly. Down right rude. Excuse me- did you forget you are working in a service industry AND we, the customers support your place of employment?!? Not to mention you're working at a coffee shop! What is there to get your panties in a bunch over?! So we changed our milk choices. Who cares. This could be the result of many different things- poor training. Poor management ( I hate to blame management because they can not be responsible for all ee behaviors and in their defense maybe they've never witnessed this behavior. Ultimately this affected our experience here and is the reason for the 3 star review. Where do I start? One of my favorite places in the world. I used to live within walking distance and now I travel from Texas to spend time here. Cozy, beautiful, great drinks and food. I have loved getting to know the baristas over my years here. I used to come here to read or study in the mornings before work. Now I work remote from here when I'm in town. They know how to roast beans and they know how to make coffee drinks. So many options, from multiple espresso choices, to pour over, to aero-press to a delightful Vietnamese coffee. I love Rising Star. Always quality, always dependable, always what I need. This Lakewood location is located on the main drag of Madison Avenue. I was driving by when I noticed a rare meter spot directly on the street in front (granted, it was an odd time of day), so naturally, I parked! Their awesome brick exterior is such a delight to see. This Rising Star is still taking safety protocols very seriously and for that I'm grateful. While there's no seating inside (fine by me), you can jump in the socially distanced line and order your drink in front of the plexiglass. The vibe is still the same trendy and modern atmosphere you'd expect and hope for from Rising Star. Beautiful local art adorns the walls, they have cute merchandise for sale and plants strewn about. Even during the pandemic they're still offering their full coffee menu and my matcha latte was exactly what I was hoping for on a dreary and rainy day. Thanks Rising Star for always being there when we need you, being as safe as possible and serving up the quality coffees and teas I love so much! The lattes are delicious, the staff is warm, welcoming, and super efficient. Another stop on my Hartzler coffee cruise. I really enjoyed the coffee itself, but the staff and the way things are being handled knocked it down a star. Upon arriving there was a long line outside. Turns out the line could have been inside (there is plenty of room for distancing) it was just never communicated to the patrons by the staff. Once I got in, when I asked questions about the drinks I was met with short answers. The menu is in a really awkward place (right by the door where you pick up your drinks-- not near where you stand in line nor order) so how was I supposed to know about the offerings? Dannnng, this place knows how to make absolutely delicious coffee! What a lucky thing for me to live only two blocks away. In the past six weeks or so, I've been in Rising Star a handful of times to grab a coffee or espresso to go and to buy some ground coffee for at home. We've tried five different blends now and I've loved each and every one of them and my coffee snob husband has loved four of them, so I call that a win! The staff here is awesome. They're currently only allowing two costumers in at a time so that people are safely distanced. Their cafe area is closed off, so it's just open to walk in and grab things to go, which is fine. I can't wait for things to be back to "normal" though so I can spend my days here drinking coffee and reading and making the staff be my friends, haha. Rising star is my favorite coffee and all of Cleveland. Literally nothing else compares. I always go for the same thing hot or cold - the cardamom bomb. Cardamom and brown sugar latte. It's delicious! I did once get the promised land and it's really delicious as well which is honey and cinnamon latte. This particular location is attached to BottleHouse brewery which I think is really cool and they also share the outdoor patio. The most recent time I went I did sit on the outdoor patio and it was super relaxing and one of the employees from rising star was outside and told us all about where they get their beans and how they're produced/ grown. It was really cool and educational and I wish I knew the guys name so everyone could talk to him. They are always super friendly here and I love this location. This was my first time sitting down to enjoy a latte in a Rising Star Coffee shop. The first thing I loved was the parking lot right next to the shop. It was awesome not to worry about street parking. Next, I enjoyed the shop itself. I loved the dark hardwood floors and adjacent room providing lots of seating space. Along with the space, the staff was great. I ordered my daughter a blueberry muffin, so we sat down before my latte was ready. The woman brought the latte to our table, which was kind and very much appreciated. Now to the crux of it... the latte. I would have given Rising Star five stars, except my issue with the milk. I'm not sure what milk they used because I didn't ask, but I'm pretty sure it's Hartzler milk. I'm a big proponent of supporting local businesses, so I don't mean to come off as a local dairy farm basher. It's just every time I have a latte (homemade or bought) using this brand of milk, the milk's distinct flavor overpowers the coffee. I taste their milk more than the coffee and that's not what I want from a latte. Other notes: The blueberry muffin was tasty, my toddler loved it.
