Finally got to try this place, the line was super long but moved fairly quickly. We preferred the Mud Sundae and Turtle Sundae. They both were good, however, the Turtle Sundae was so melted it just tasted like a super sweet shake. I think the hot fudge melted the ice cream. Maybe they put too much. Most people have their go to ice cream/custard places, and this location has to be the tops in the Katy/Cypress area for atmosphere, taste, service and its' almost magical allure. Everyday new flavours are made, but they have staples always available like chocolate and vanilla and sugar free. We follow them on Facebook to get their daily made flavours versus making the effort to drive by to see their sign, which always seems to be ill-timed with advertisements right when we want to see the flavours of the day. Mostly they have pretty conservative flavours or none that seem worth the drive. But I'd say about once a month something comes along that we can't refuse, like Mexican chocolate. But the custard is excellent since it's more rich and smooth than ice cream, so you can't go wrong with a simple chocolate with cookie dough. But their atmosphere has an aura about it that is extremely inviting, particularly on a warm evening after sunset. Those lights, striped umbrellas, almost a carnival like environment when the crowds get going. People sit around the porch tables while customers stand around waiting and long lines of cars snake their way around the building, so pick your poison, because when it's busy, you may wait 45 minutes, but very worth it!! Workers are always bright and friendly, too! My advice, park, get out and order, it's much faster and more fun! read more

Ordered a Turtle Sundae $5.75 gave the girl a $10 bill and she asked me if I wanted my CHANGE??? Besides handing me my sundae through a window, what service did she provide??? Tipping has gotten out of hand these days. Most people tip for good service but in my opinion there has to be some service provided to warrant a tip. I love RITTER'S and it's always my go to for a neighborhood sweet treat. I was immediately served at the walk up window and ordered a snow cone today - strawberry with condensed milk. It soothed my craving, but it was just ok...the strawberry flavor was good, the ice for the snowball was pretty chunky as opposed to smooth and the condensed milk seemed like sweet cream as opposed to condensed milk.... read more

This is the only place I know that has marshmallow pieces! No I don't want marshmallow fluff, that doesn't do anything for me. I can't even see it when the custard is vanilla (Connie's Custard.) I love Ritter's! I get the large vanilla custard with Heath and Marshmallow pieces. I like the texture and that the marshmallows don't get hard. They always get my order correct and fast! Didn't know that there was a difference between Custard and regular ice cream until we visited this place. We always come here at least 2 to 3 times a month to get some fresh frozen custard. Daily specials are run and they always have a new flavor to try every day. We always get the smallest serving size because it's a lot of ice cream for three bucks. I'm a kid at heart so I normally get the worms in dirt and love it! There is always a long line when we drive by here so this place is very popular. read more

Let me start by saying that Ritters has amazing ice cream. Well my bday was a week ago and my wife bought me an ice cream cake. We finally got down to the last slice tonight and (this sounds fishy, but I'm not the type of person to make this up) there was a broken off part of a plastic utensil! I couldn't believe it! You order from the stand, and then grab a seat in the outdoor area - or take it to go and hope it doesn't melt by the time you get home. They have super rich, creamy custard. So I went back to Ritter's. This time I went and had their frozen custard. I had the Peaches. The custard is similar to frozen yogurt than ice cream. I bought the small size for $1.97. I had room for another so I went and bought an Italian Ice -- Watermelon. This was great. I can't compare it to other Italian Ices, but this is the second Italian Ice I have had at Ritter's and both were great. Again, not too sweet. It melted in my mouth really smooth. It didn't make my mouth frozen, like an Icee would do. The high school looking kids working at this place were actually nice also. They greeted you when you arrive at the window and actually thanked you. From what I could see, the kids weren't inside goofing off. This place was perfect. read more

First time I had frozen custard, I forgot where it was and maybe it's better that way, it wasn't a good experience. Then my Dad wanted to take me here and I had my reservations. I see a sign with vintage/retro lettering to it and we come to this building which is something from the 50's. There's a long menu all along the building and I decided to get the Strawberry Shortcake Sundae. My dad decided to get a vanilla waffle cone. I figure Shortcake Sundae wouldn't cause a mess since you have to eat it out in the heat. The Sundae was great and I'm going to make it one of the places to go when I visit Houston. Pros - good frozen custard. Cons - service was decent (although the cashier seemed overwhelmed), it's outdoors. The first time I saw frozen custard on tv, I was hooked on the thought because i'm a huge fan of frozen sweet dairy products. So, when someone reminded me of frozen custard through the talk thread, my interest had resurfaced and the first place I thought about was Ritters in Katy. I've never been to Ritters, let alone tried frozen custard. So, after taking a few pictures of the place on my iphone, I waited in line and at the same time looked at the selection of flavors that were available. If was a tough decision between the mint oreo and cherry cheesecake, but I decided on the cherry cheesecake. Since I had not eaten dinner, I decided on the single scoop with a cone, however, Ritters also has sugar and waffle cones as well. They also serve Nathan's hot dogs and chili fritos. As the person was getting my frozen delight, I noticed the person putting my cone on a weighing scale. It was a bit disappointing to see that because it really took away from the experience. I understand it's a franchise, but is it really necessary to weigh the food. The frozen custard itself was ok. Because it was so hot, I had to devour it really fast and didn't get a chance to savor it, otherwise all of it would have melted in my hand. Frozen custard has a creamier texture than ice cream which is more denser, and is probably why it melted so quickly. So, the million dollar question is, would I ever go back? Probably so if I'm in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to make it a destination. read more

My first time here and I have to say, I have no idea what a frozen custard was until now. Basically it's an ice cream with more milk, making it smoother and creamier taste and texture. It's not bad. In fact it's pretty darn tasty for someone with a sweet tooth. Prices is reasonable, drive though is a plus, service is okay, location is a bit of a drive.
