Defiantly a "hole in the wall" type location/place. Different but neat atmosphere. Butcher paper as table cloths. Old License plates & writing/graffiti on the ceiling/wall. Service was good, server was quite talkative and attentive to needs. Food was good. Blooming onion was huge and delicious. Stopped in for lunch today with some family after a morning of fishing at Murrells Inlet. When we arrived, the small eclectic burger shack was near empty but began to fill as we got closer to noon. The place is decorated with signage and license plates. Apparently you can also sign the walls or decor if so inclined. They also provide free peanuts if you want some prior to your meal. We were seated and greeted by our server who took our drink order. Once we got our drinks, we ordered our food (burgers all the way around). Two boys got a bacon cheeseburger with fries, I got the continental (bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg), a RC burger, and a fried shrimp platter. Three of us upgraded onion rings to our meal and all meals come with cole slaw. The food was really good and filling. The boys demolished their burgers. Their onion rings are massive (see the pics). My youngest son could not finish his meal so they gave us a go box. Service was a little slow/ inattentive at times and drinks went empty at times. You can pay at your table which is helpful but they tend to want you to pay right away. Good option for the beach when you have had enough seafood. Let me tell you something! This place did nothing but impress me on my quick visit. We stopped as we had a couple of dogs and just wanted to a quick to go order. When I came in the lady greeted me and was very nice. She was very patient while I looked over the menu to see what I wanted to get. She also gave me some nice suggestions. While she stepped away and I was looking at the menu, someone else came up to me to make sure that I was helped. Numerous times throughout my visit I was asked if I need anything. I got a go order and was sitting out front and the food was brought out to me which I thought was very nice. They also had no problem refilling my drink. These people were very nice and very helpful and I really enjoyed their service. Oh, by the way, the mahi sandwich that I had was absolutely fantastic! It was an okay food joint. No one in our party hated it, but the location could use a good scrubbing and redesign. I'm not sure we would come back. Per Yelp's ratings, it's definitely a-okay. PROS: -Really neat local-ish feeling place. It doesn't have the same "tourist" feel as a lot of the Myrtle Beach and nearby restaurant establishments have. It feels a bit more like a local joint with the same flavor that "my favorite restaurant" places have. -Every, every surface of the restaurant has writing on it. It's kinda their thing. Guests can write on ANYTHING. This means every single inch of the place - including the windowsills - have a huge amount of history. I wish some of that "history" had a bit more significance than just the person signing their name, but it can be pretty cool. -Picnic tables for outdoor seating. While the seating just overlooks the busy roadway, it's still especially nice at night when the outdoor lights are shining. -Pretty good service. The server seemed like he was waiting a lot of tables, but he still managed to keep up with his with no problem. -Food was pretty good. Nobody in our party regretted their food choice, everything seemed fresh, and it all tasted pretty okay. -Food was pretty diverse, honestly. They clearly are a burger place, but even people in our party who didn't do meat could manage to find some food without too much issue. So that was cool. CONS: -The place felt very dive-y. It was not what we were expecting looking at the outside of the building. The table -The bathrooms weren't particularly clean - and had seen very, very better days. The service was good, but I was violently illl the next day and this was virtually the only food I had eaten all day. Just lovely. First, we had probably the sweetest server- beautiful older lady with the kindest voice. Didn't catch her name, but I know her son's name is Adam lol The sweet tea was excellent. I got the fried shrimp po boy with fries and slaw and J got the fried shrimp platter with fries and slaw. J and I were of split opinion on the shrimp- they're little shrimp, like popcorn shrimp size. I loved them. Very well seasoned breading, nicely fried and hot. My po boy roll was so soft and nice. J prefers larger shrimp but his portion was huge. The fries were hot and well salted. Before I go into this review, I figure that it is important to state that the restaurant was busy. However, one of the waiters was behaving very rudely by slamming trays and beverage-ware into the dirty dish containers. This was not directly rude to my party, but to all of guests. This waiter also turned out to be our server and refused to help us. Other tables around us were waited on and sat way after us. We had been sitting for 20 minutes with not even a drink order being put in. I love the food at river city but I'm honestly so disappointed how our waiter acted. It is also important to note that we knew it was our server because another waitress had to gain his attention for us and he blew us off. The final number of parties, big and large, waited on before us were 8 small to medium sized parties. So for future customers, please be aware the food is great for the price point, but the service really destroyed this establishments image for me. read more

We decided to go to lunch one day and off we went to River City Café. There are two locations, one in Murrells Inlet and the other in Surfside Beach. We chose the original in Murrells Inlet. Grab a basket of peanuts and enjoy them while reading the walls, chairs, license plates, etc. that people have commented on. Our order that day consisted of the Darlington 500 sandwich (fried bologna that he always orders), a jumbo hotdog and the Carolina chili cheeseburger. Our daughter got onion rings instead of French fries to go with the hot dog. Mind you, you don't get a lot of rings but they are huge. Food was placed in front of us and our daughter (who was visiting) stated that "A visit to the beach wouldn't be complete without coming to River City Café." Then she devoured her hot dog. Her hotdog was topped with chili, onions and mustard and she put her side of coleslaw (orders come with that) on top of it. It was hard to handle but she did a great job. His fried bologna was delicious as usual. My Carolina chili cheeseburger which came covered in chili, onion, slaw, cheese, etc. was huge. I had to take it apart a little to be able to fit it in my mouth. Would I come back here? Whenever we're in town, we always do. I'' see you on the flip side. read more

I ordered a salad and what they gave me was inedible. ALL of the lettuce was totally wilted and/or off color like it had been sitting out for a long time. It also tasted off and the croutons were soggy with water or something. I'm not sure why you would still decide to serve that instead of just saying, "sorry we don't have that right now," or something. The coleslaw tasted off also and the raisins in there were neither necessary or delicious. The sweet potato fries I got were cold and clearly were pretty old too. This is getting 2 starts because the burger while technically overcooked from what I asked for was edible. I got the big island burger and the pineapple on it did look a bit questionable to me. I ended up throwing most of what I recieved away. The other people that ordered along with me had the same problems with their food. Old fries (regular kind), bad tasting coleslaw, and over cooked, but edible burgers. We ordered take out over the phone and they did seem nice on the phone and everything, but I would not want to order from here again. Nothing super special about menu or service. Sat for 10 minutes without being greeted even though a server told us where to sit. We had to approach same server who walked right past us without acknowledging our presence. Waited another 5 minutes before a different server greeted us (who also had passed us without even looking our way) took our order and eventually was cordial. Probably will not return nor recommend even though we had enjoyed a different location and had great customer service and a good experience there. read more
