Chad Miller Auto Care - Nifty waiting area - the couch/seats are made from oil drums!

My daughter is a UTSA student living away from home. She calls me and says her 2018 Hyundai Elantra…read morewon't start but she knows of a mechanic close to her apartment. She has her car towed to Chad Miller Auto Care and calls me to say she needs a new battery and is being quoted $645. I ask her to hand her phone to an employee, and when I asked why this is so expensive the employee raised their voice at me. I asked for a manager and was informed it was Chad himself I was talking to. I would NOT suggest this mechanic. He is unprofessional and perpetuates the negative stereotype of crooked mechanics preying on young women.

So I read good things about this place. From what I read, they seemed like they knew what they were…read moredoing and maybe they do, but of the two vehicles I took there, both over 10 years old and with a variety of problems, they were able to fix some things, but not all. Mine has an oil leak at least 4 different places haven't been able to figure out. Chad's garage gave me some hope, but they were never able to fix it. I take pretty much all "guarantees" with a grain of salt. "Bring it back"...pffft why would I? You couldn't fix it the First time? More likely, I'll just be dumping more money in sonl you can "half fix it" a 2nd time. One mechanic even told my wife to "hit the dash when her A/C wasn't kicking on...AFTER they fixed it. GTFO... Really!? Cost wasn't exactly on the cheap side...maybe fair, but ONLY if they fix the problem. My impression is they had way more cars than they could handle and were trying to rush them outa there. Fair enough, but I will not be taking either of ours back. Fair warning to those that do.

The quality of the work is what I had an issue with. Called ahead and asked if road force balancing…read morewas available and was told yes. Brought the car in and when I left the vehicle was shaking. Took the car back and they added more weight instead of diagnosing the problem. Took the vehicle to another shop because I no longer trusted them. Tht shop fixed the issue and I also had to got get another lugnut because they stripped the head. Long story short this shop does basic balancing do not go there expecting quality work. A balance and rotate cost me 255 bucks. I am not happy.

TRIED TO SCAM ME OUT OF $1100 DO NOT GO HERE. See attached image!…read more Back in June I finally decided it was time to fix my cars AC, this was a long time coming because I figured it would be a large expense. I STUPIDLY trusted an even stupider family member, who refereed me to this "auto shop" for repair. I went in for service on June 11th, paid $390 to refill my AC, and replace a part they claimed was "necessary" .. they told me if I had any further issues they had put in a product that would provide more information as to if I had a leak/ where it was leaking. Fast forward 2 DAYS.. I get in my car, no more cold air ... AGAIN. Not even 48 hours later. I immediately called and asked what the next steps were as it hadn't even been 2 full days yet, and they instructed me to bring it back in so they could check for the leak they had mentioned previously, on the phone I mentioned I was on shift for next 5 days so it wouldn't be until then that I could bring it back in. I was not able to make it back in until the 18th. After I brought it back within an hour they "diagnosed" my car as needing a new compressor. Parts, labor, AND ANOTHER AC RECHARGE WITH FREON..You know what I had just paid for that didn't even last 48 hours!! The estimate totaling $1,069.00 for everything. OBVIOUSLY this was very upsetting, so I went back into the shop to try to negotiate with them in some way. After seemingly arguing with Jose for 45 minutes he agreed to waive my refilling fee but let me know he was doing me a HUGE favor. HA! My personal favorite part was them hearing me argue with the gentlemen, to then bring out a female who tried to "better explain it to me". She utilized scare tactics to try to convince me to have the work done, as soon as possible, because "the tariffs will significantly increase the price of everything once that starts kicking in" .... Thank God I have some kind of sense in me, and figured it was at least worth a second opinion from elsewhere. HAHAHA BUCKLE UP!!! I had a much more intelligent friend then recommend me to another mechanic shop in SA. I took it in, and this time within a few hours, I got this response. " Hey soooo I'm not sure what that place did, but I have never seen auto work like that in MY LIFE " There were wires not connected to anything, wires connected incorrectly, I've genuinely just never seen anything like it..... SO I went back connected everything the way it should be and NOW YOUR AC IS WORKING PERFECTLY. I don't even feel right charging you for it, since the work was NEVER COMPLETED CORRECTLY THE FIRST TIME" IM SORRY WHAT!!? In the end the lovely real mechanic only charged me for the refilling of the AC with the Freon and we called it a day. Since then now 3 MONTHS LATER, my AC has continued to stay in IMPECCABLE condition, ice cold, no issues whatsoever. ZERO complaints. In NO way do I feel like this was not a HUGE SCAM, and grab for money.. trying to replace unnecessary things, as this company knew I am a female, with no automotive knowledge. 1000000% taking advantage of an unknowing victim. Please I urge you, if you utilize this company in any way shape or form, first off DONT, but if you must, before going through with it.. do yourself a favor and seek a second opinion. Could be the difference in over a GRAND. DO BETTER CD AUTOMOTIVE !!!!!! Truly DESPICABLE. I hope we leaned our lesson to stop attempting to take advantage of customers, but after actually reading reviews (like I should have done the first time) that seems to be a pretty common occurrence and trend as to how you do "business". DO NOT USE THIS COMPANIES SERVICES.

I was referred to Barney and he let me use the corner of his shop over the course of a year in my spare time. Oh yeah, I learned a few (semi-expensive) lessons but he never gave me grief and helped me out and I sincerely appreciate that. He is definitely a standup guy. I moved to Austin a year later and haven't been back since but I have continued to refer the occasional person there if they live in the San Antonio area and need a machine shop. If you're a regular guy who wants to hotrod the engine in your old car, Barney can do it for you. If you walk in the shop you can tell just by looking at the equipment that they are serious about the work they do. It may look messy and sloppy with parts lying around, but while I was there over the course of the year I watched the other shop employees and they were meticulous about the work they did, always re-checking measurements for accuracy. A machine shop doesn't stay in business long if their work product is crap and they were always busy, even on Saturdays. Kinda tells you something, doesn't it? He knows how to build a motor (ask him about the 389 Poncho) and he won't sell you services you don't need for your intended use (you don't need a forged crank for a daily driver, etc). I'm doing another engine build now after 25 years for an El Camino (383 stroker) and trying to find a machine shop in Austin that I can trust as much as I trusted Barney. Unfortunately, he's just a bit too far away for me to haul everything down there. :-(
