We moved into a new house with a new bare lot. We needed some hardscape done and some landscaping. My wife and I found River City landscaping from doing some homework on the computer. We read the reviews and they were positive. The reviews had all the key words we were looking for; QUALITY, EXPERIENCE, and REACHABLE. We interviewed other landscapers, but really liked Rick's personality. It is true that Rick does promptly return your phone calls and emails. He promised us that our job would be the only job he would be doing while ours was in progress and that he was easily reachable. This turned out to be true. He and his crew were here consistently on site early Monday through Friday. They kept a orderly and clean work area. A piece of equipment did breakdown, but they had a new piece here by the afternoon and they were working again. We did have them widen the path around the fountain and the centering of the conduit for the fountain was off and will not be reusable, but Rick has a solution that was reasonable. A few sections of the concrete on the patio did develop cracks and he offered to give us some money off the job or replace the concrete. We opted to replace the concrete and it looks very good now. I found Rick to be a good listener and took our initial plan ideas to heart. My wife and I had put together a yard plan on some graph paper and he was the only landscaper to look at it and make comments from that plan. That bolstered our confidence with Rick that we would get what we wanted. Rick would also give us advice and suggestions on what to do and not do from his experience and we appreciated that as well. It was his suggestion to make our front steps curve a bit to break up the straight lines of the yard. We have received many compliments from the neighbors. Owner didn't understand why and couldn't fix problem ($3000 wasted). Poor concrete matching so was painted by owner - really? When I had the yard landscaped about two years ago, it looked fine for a short time. I even gave this company a wonderful review! But within a relatively short amount of time, the plants began to die and had to be replaced. In the beginning they did replace dead /sickly plants, with some argument. However, now over two years later, over half of the plantings have had to be replaced due to poor plant selection for the area and improper soil treatment at time of planting. Add to the fact that the wrong grass seed was spread over a fill area and then sprinkled throughout entire lawn-- grass that turns yellow in winter while the rest of the lawn remains green- thus a spotty unhealthy appearance in the winter months. It has been a very disappointing experience. I have had other homes professionally landscaped over the years and know that new landscaping should look better with each passing year-- not need to be replaced and re-landscaped. read more

River City Landscaping is one of the best landscaping companies we have worked with. We had recently moved to a new home which did not have a back yard done. Our moderate 44' by 60' backyard was just weeds. We agonized over who to hire and whether or not to get a designer. After getting a designer and settling on a design we began our search for a landscaper. We contacted a few different reputable companies. One of them was Rick (owner) with River City Landscaping. He came recommended from another friend that used him for their new home back yard. Rick came the very next day and with a few days had a preliminary quote. We waited a couple weeks for the other landscapers. In that time Rick was very easy to work with, would answer our calls and was tuning and modifying the quote. We are incredibly happy that we choose River City Landscaping. There are few important things I value in a landscaper. One is that the project manager is onsite. The guy you work out all the details, get the quote, and manages the team. The great news is, Rick is very hands on and was onsite at least half of the days of the project if not more than half. That meant we never had to deal with the infamous finger pointing between the designer, the workers, the account manager (sales), and the project manager. In this case we could deal directly with "the guy" during nearly the entire project. Now I don't know how all of his projects go in this regard but he is very hands on and is very often directly overseeing your project. Another thing is the ability to see examples of his work that are similar to ours, a medium back yard. Many of the landscapers would say, "Oh yes, we've done tons of yards like this, with such and such style." But if you ask for reference accounts or pictures, it's always, "let me get those for you" and they never can. However they still show these grandiose projects that are nothing like what you might be getting. Rick was able to show pictures of many types of projects but also had some just like ours. He also had an example of a yard he JUST DID that had about the same size and many of the same elements. He arranged for a visit and my wife was able to check it out the very next day. It was so helpful to get an idea of the quality and style of his work and also the materials we were considering using. Another thing is drainage. I had a very odd shaped and sloped yard. It was high on one side and really needed some serious work. I stressed drainage working properly and he came through on that excellently. He recommended excavating the yard and building up some walls that in the end made our yard look awesome and took what looked impossible and masked with an excellent design. We had a design but it wasn't working quite right. That's pretty typical of a project. Something that looks good on paper may not be practical or acceptable when you start building it. Rick was incredibly helpful in working and modifying the design. He gave advice on materials, worked within our budget, and really helped fix some of the design elements. Many things just didn't work or the dimensions were off. Rick was incredibly flexible, even when this delaying or caused some rework to the project. This is especially helpful since he didn't do the design. Rick's demeanor is very easy to work with. He's calm always. Projects can be frustrating for both the landscapers and the customer. This is the nature of the business. In our case we had some extreme heat come in, there were changes due to the design, and we were pretty picky customers. We analyzed our choices a lot. We went to pick out the retaining wall materials, specific trees we liked, and were making changes to the plant list up to the last minute. That's not easy for a landscaper to adjust to but Rick was awesome. He was flexible and helpful the entire time. He could have just said, "Hey, this is what we agreed to," and leave it at that but he worked with us every step of the way. The Quality of the work was excellent. The retaining wall with natural stone was excellent. Turned out better than we'd hoped. The wood work he did for us was better than we'd expected. He build a planter box and some trellises and an A/C screen. The quality was great. I did find a few things that needed to be tweaked and the team did everything I asked, whether is was to replant a tree a different way or replace some irrigation nozzles. They were very easy to work with. The price was right. Rick knows his business and one thing that amazed me is how his pricing was fair and reasonable. We highly recommend River City Landscaping. Wow! They did such a phenomenal job on our yard they actually exceeded our expectations. They were willing to work with the plans we designed ourselves, and not only "got" our vision, but also made a few suggestions that made everything that much more awesome. The design work was wonderful, but execution flawed. Customer service was awful. Rick (the owner) was our buddy before we signed the contract, our best friend during the job, and then, after he got the final payment, on to other jobs and not returning calls. I wish we could say better things about him because we really like the guy, and he did do some good work. But his guys broke things. His guys disconnected some of our sprinklers when they fixed other ones. When we told Rick about it, he said it wasn't in the contract to fix them. We pointed out that they worked fine until his guys came through. He grudgingly had someone come over and fix them--after we made repeated phone calls. His guys failed to connect our sprinkler valves and we were the ones to discover it--after the repeated short circuits blew several fuses in our sprinkler controller. Rick's attitude was, well, that happens. If he had given us a little bitty apology just once, it would have gone a long way. His contract said there was a 1-year guarantee on equipment but it's probably worthless. He only calls back after you make repeated phone calls, then says he is coming by, doesn't come, doesn't call. Finally comes, with an attitude like helluva nerve you folks have calling me to fix something. You get the idea. If you hire him, I would write the contract to hold back 10 percent for a month, just to make sure everything is done right. read more

I met with Rick, the owner, on 10/10/16 and he was very pleasant. He called on 10/12/16 and said he had a cancellation for the next 2 weeks. I had an estimate for $5,000 less than his and he agreed to meet it if we changed the size of the Podocarpus Maki to go along the fence. He assured me they would grow quickly to form a hedge. They started the job on 10/18/16 due to rain on 10/17/16. There were several issues and I was very glad I delayed my vacation to be home during this job or many problems would have been covered up. The demolition went quickly but not all stumps were removed. When I saw the 7 scrawny trees delivered, Rick again assured me they would fill in. He offered to get the other form of Podocarpus but warned me they would grow too large for the area. I saw his employee randomly spray green marks where they planned to plant the 7 trees. Because I couldn't communicate with his staff, I called Rick and asked him to tell them to use the measurements I had calculated since I never got drawn plans. When the 7 scrawny trees were planted, I called Green Acres with Rick present and they informed us that this type of Podocarpus grows very slowly and should have been planted 2-3 feet apart (not 53") if they were to ever form a hedge. I asked about adding more trees closer together but because the stumps were not all removed and the planter was already in, the only other option was the type that grew fast but too large for the area; so I am stuck with the 7 scrawny trees. The raised planter was mismeasured, so they planned a shoddy fix to add a second row of 6" block on one end which would have been visible from the inside of the planter because the cap piece was only 9" wide. They did cut the wrong block out and corrected it, so I was glad I was there. I reminded Rick that the drip system also went to two other gardens, one that was on the other side of the sidewalk. He said he forgot to tell his staff and, even when he did, they buried the cut off pipes twice until I insisted they show me they were connected to the drip and hose - which then required a lot of extra digging to actually connect them before the sod was laid. I asked if they could start the sod along the patio on the SW so it was even, but Rick said they had to start in the far NE corner to avoid walking on it once laid as the rain created mud underneath. Because he was not on the job, they started laying the sod in the NW corner and walked all over it which made deep footprints. Rick planned to mount the electrical box for the lighting on the back side of the outdoor fireplace but I informed him that I wouldn't be able to get my lawn mower through, so I asked him to mount it inside the fireplace. He tried to tell me that cutting the wire would negate the warranty but I pointed out that the plug simply needed to be put inside. He left the wire connections on the outside and covered them with rock. On the final day, Rick went to get two drain covers - one fit but the other needed a 4" cover, so the 3" cover fell inside the drain pipe where he left it (I got the correct cover). The final outcome is overshadowed by all the mistakes made during the job. At one point, Rick asked me to sign a waiver that I agreed to the 7 Podocarpus Maki; he misinformed me about these trees and needless to say I refused. I had my backyard hardscape done to my new home. It was just mud, weed and grass out there. Rick Abalos of River City Landscaping and his crew did an amazing job. They installed a cascading water feature that changed to different colored lights, stamped concrete pavement, gazebo and trellises. He and his crew were very professional and always prompt. Rick consulted with me every step of the way to ensure it was to my satisfaction and on budget. I told him as a widow, I need a low maintenance backyard and he did just that. He was very detail oriented and paid close attention to what plants was suited and were on a dripped system with timer. I appreciated the personal interest he had shown me. He and his men were very meticulous and cleaned up after themselves which I really appreciated as I have experienced in the past if I had anything done to my house it was always left for me to finish the clean up. My backyard is stunning, so serene and tranquill. I love looking out there every morning and spending time in my beautiful backyard. It's everything I had envisioned and more. They were done in 5 days in time for my big party. I had many compliments and requests for his business card. His work speaks for itself. It's no wonder he has been in business 25 plus years. I called Rivercity Landscaping to get an estimate on redoing my entire front yard. I wanted to convert to a drip system, and drought tolerant plants. Rick came out the same week I called, and after talking to him about what I wanted, and what he could do, I knew I wanted him to do the job. He does all the masonary work, built the wraught iron fence and gorgeous gates. Just did an amazing job!!! He suggested a dry creek bed, which turned out fabulous! His wife Beth is an expert in knowing about every plant, exposure, watering needs, etc. So in doing the plan showing the layout of where the plants would be located in front, she added a mini picture of each. I only wanted to change a couple of them, and asked if she would meet me at the nursery. She is great! We got together a couple days later, walked around and found everything I wanted.
