Adding one extra star out of respect for Dr. Chung. The review is for the process of ordering glasses for my child, a messed up experience from the get go. I ordered the glasses very fast, although I did have to point out that my child needs progressive lenses because the person taking my order missed that. Two weeks later I'm calling them back asking for updates regarding the glasses. They can't find my child's info saying that all they have is some records from 2 years ago. Finally, they were able to find my son's glasses prescription. They are now asking if he needs photochromatic lenses or not. Seriously? This is something we discussed during my initial visit to them 2 weeks ago (!). Two weeks later and we still haven't received his glasses and we are looking at another 1-2 weeks of processing time. 3-4 weeks to get glasses? If you are considering glasses for your child or yourself, please go somewhere else. read more

I had an extremely disappointing experience with this optometry office regarding my lens replacement. I specifically ordered premium lenses with the transition feature included. After waiting 2 weeks, I received glasses without the transition feature - a crucial component I really needed. When I called to address this issue, they initially offered to add the transition feature for free and had me drop off my glasses. However, 3 days later, they called back saying they couldn't honor their promise because my insurance had already been billed. Instead, they wanted to charge me an additional $120 for their mistake. The staff admitted that their representative had incorrectly processed my order by removing the transition lens feature from my premium package without my knowledge or consent. Despite acknowledging their error, they refused to take responsibility or cover the $120 cost to correct their mistake. In the end, I spent $124, waited for 3 weeks, and received downgraded lenses without the transition feature I specifically requested. This experience has been frustrating and time-wasting, and I'm disappointed by their poor customer service and unwillingness to rectify their acknowledged mistake. My friend recommended this place to me and this was my first time shopping here, and it will be the last time. My friend has also decided to shop somewhere else next year. read more

OVERALL I recommend this office because they have great infection control practices for Covid. They asked that you wait in your car in the parking lot. Call their office when you arrive and they will call you back to let you know when it is safe to come into the office. They do this to limit the amount of people inside the office. They greet you at the door and have you sanitize your hands. They asked you to put your belongings in a Tupperware tub. If you try on glasses they ask you to put them aside in a tub for them to sanitize before returning them back to the shelf. DOCTORS I have met a couple of their doctors here, and they have all been friendly and very professional. Additionally the front desk staff are very efficient and you can tell they know what they are doing. They have a system in place that works. Whenever I order contacts they arrive very fast. I can either pick them up at their office or have them delivered to my house. No joke they arrived to my house in two days. They call you to remind you about your appointment. And they even called me because they had a cancellation and asked if I wanted to move my appointment sooner. read more

We brought my little one here to see Dr. Chung for a second opinion and she was extremely calm and patient. The previous Optometrist we went to rushed my little one and then became short tempered. In comparison Dr. Chung was a breath of fresh air and warm. Her demeanor is very calming which soothed my little one. He happily came and said this doctor is nice and she has these toys on her fingers during the exam and she wasn't being mean. They also do a retina scan here so that helps. The office is very spacious and her front staff is very sweet even during this Covid-mask time. Everyone was kind and accommodating considering little ones can hardly keep their hands to themselves with all the mirrors and stuff to try on. The lady who was helping us calmly would say just put the frames you touch/try on in the dish so we can sanitize rather than flipping out. I have been coming to River Oaks Family Optometry for a few years now. Their handling of the pandemic has been great. I feel extremely safe coming to the office as my temperature is checked, I am given hand sanitizer, and masks are mandatory. Since the pandemic started I've been to the office about 3 times for my exam, to pick up glasses, and have the glasses fitted better to my face. Dr. Lam continues to be professional and is outfitted with all the PPE so I felt safe interacting with her as well. I've noticed that there aren't a ton of people waiting inside so it is easy to socially distance and that all surfaces are clean. Our first and only spot for our eye exam and spectacles since we moved to the Bay Area! We just came here for our second time. Personally, it's always kind of intimidating to find a new optometry office, but both times here has been nothing short of amazing. Optometrists and the receptionists here are always super nice and friendly and takes time to explain everything (insurance plan, eye exam results, etc.) My husband lost his nose pads a few months ago and a quick call got him in right away for some replacements/glasses readjustment. He just received his second pair of glasses here today (was told the wait would be approx. 3 weeks but got it in exactly 1 week!) They are very safe and careful with their covid measures. We need to call once we arrive and they'll prompt us to come in as soon as they're ready. We highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for an optometry. read more

I came to River Oaks Family Optometry twice and each time their COVID safety protocols are top notch. Dr. Elaine Chung helps explain everything in a caring, calm and compassionate manner and her staff is very well trained. I would highly recommend her practice for Lipiflow, which is a treatment that helps unclog your oil glands. There was soothing music during the treatment and every little detail was taken care of. I've been going here for years. The staff and the doctors are incredibly polite. The doctors have a very calm demeanor. I've been getting my eye exams, contacts and glasses done here for years and never had any issues. The quality of service is amazing. The billing and insurance piece is smooth and hassle free. If they ever do make a billing mistake (happened only once in many years), they fix it promptly. I just called them and they corrected the error and I got a refund. They're also maintaining excellent hygiene during the pandemic and I was comfortable with the degree of cleanliness and the hygiene standards I saw there when I went there recently (during the pandemic). Saw it had good reviews and tried to go there for ordering glasses. I had specifically told I will look at the collections first and then will fill out a detailed profile. I had the prescription already. When I went there the door was blocked and we were given a form fill standing outside. I understand the health concerns but that's not how I want to be treated as a customer. Why should I give so much of my personal information just for looking at the glasses first? I have been going to Dr Chung for 7years, they always provide the best service out of all the places that i have been, they are all so friendly and helpful. They always make me feel like i m on first class service. During the covid19 time, they are very careful to protect us and themselves, they only allow 2 customers in at a time to control number of people in store, they check everyone temperature before let them enter , and Dr is wear face shave and N95, so i feel safe to be close distance with my check up, They also cleaned everything after each use. I went here purely based on yelp reviews and I am not disappointed! I made an appointment with Dr. Chung. I got a call 24 hours before the appointment for confirmation. They charge $50 if you cancel appointment within 24 hours, so be careful about that. I reached on time and did not have to wait much after I filled out the form for new patient. Dr. Chung is very personable. She answered all my questions and also walked me through the entire process and made me very comfortable and well-informed about my eyes health. My family have been going to Dr Chung since 2015. Even after I moved out of river oaks :) The staff and doctor are very patient and polite. I like the process they set up for covid precaution. They only allow one customer at a time, so I will wait outside while my wife was seeing the doctor. I think this is great, it reduces the risk of spreading the gems if there's any. Before I started the exam, the staff explained to me what's covered by my insurance and what not. This is very helpful too. I came here for a contact lens exam and fitting. When I was told my lenses would cost almost $1000 for a years supply of daily lenses, I told them I wouldn't be ordering contact lenses from them and just wanted my prescription. Went to costco and got a 3 months supply for $170 (which means $680 for a years supply). They overcharge like crazy. And they placed a hold on my insurance so I had to pay out of pocket and file a claim with my insurance for reimbursement. Very frustrating that they placed the hold even though I told them I would not be ordering contacts. Thanks for overcharging and for the inconvenience. They've lost my business. read more

I was traveling to San Jose last week with a final destination being Yosemite where I was going to embark on a 13 hour day hike to the top of the Half Dome. On a plane I realized that I have forgotten my contact lenses at home and hiking for that long in glasses would have been quite uncomfortable. I stopped by River Oaks and Amanda at the front desk was very understanding and accommodating to my situation. She helped with my request on a such a short timeline which I greatly appreciated. Absolutely unprofessional folks here. I was given an appointment for 2pm and over the phone they were trying to show as if this place is completely booked with no room for appointments. I showed up for my appointment right on time and waited for over an hour for doctor to get free on a regular weekday afternoon with only two patients in clinic including myself. Ask patients to come at a time you are free. The front desk staff has no duty to inform you about delays or anything but are trying to sell you their services or products. This place is a complete rip off and making business out of patients. Secondly, they are doing some shabby work with eye testing. You can totally feel it. Seems like all good reviews belongs to the business itself. Be careful while visiting this place. I would definitely not recommend this place. No professionalism whatsoever!! read more

Every year annual checkup was covered by insurance but this time they renamed few tests called iwellness or something and charged for that as insurance doesn't cover that. Long over due review here, I guess I need to stop being selfish and share my favorite Optometrist with the world. Dr. Elaine Chung is simply amazing. I've been going to her for my vision care for quite a few years. What I really like about her is that she's friendly, caring, very attentive & thorough with her eye exams. Also she's very patient, taking her time to explain any conditions or pictures of your retina etc and answer any questions you may have to put you at ease. I was actually going to a different optometry office and Dr. Chung was one of a few Optometrists I see there. She was my favorite though bcoz of the reasons above. One year when I tried to make an appointment and found out she no longer works there, I google her to see where she went and followed her to this new office. haha. So glad I did, when you find a good doctor, don't let them escape! I recommended her to a colleague of mine and he had only good things to say about her and now he's a patient of hers as well. read more

Prepandemic this was my go to place. I get the concern but you still have all of the original Covid restriction signage and have your doors blocked. You guys need to get back to normal. I work in healthcare, if you want a mask wear one but stop the barriers to your office. I walked out because I was being micro managed trying to look for frames a few months ago.
