This was an Impromptu stop along highway 101. It's a small place that can only seat about 30 people, it is operated, cooking, and service by the owner and wife. Because of that service was not fast but friendly. Seafood is fresh (of course) and cooked on a wood fire grill. The seven sea stew was hearty and delicious. On our way to Seattle I was craving an oyster sandwich so we stopped at the 101 Public House on the river, but, it was closed. So we drove down the street and stumbled upon this place. Regarding atmosphere - it is a no-frills, humble, clean restaurant. Regarding food - the oyster sandwich we ordered was simple and heavenly. The large oysters were breaded and placed on a large Hot dog shaped bun or roll that had been lightly grilled. It came with grilled onions and a lettuce. MMMMmmmmm good. And the order came quickly. Regarding service - the gentleman-owner, the woman who waited on us, and the woman who cooked our order, were all very pleasant. They also seemed to go out of their way to talk with and help customers. As we were leaving my husband noticed that the woman who had waited on us had put on her coat and left the restaurant to go pick up fresh oysters ... explaining to the customer that she'd be back in 15 minutes. I know of no other restaurant that will shop for AND wait on a customer at the same time. We will return someday to try the fresh oysters off the grill. Regarding the time it may take to get these babies, well, as we were leaving the kind gentleman owner told us that it does take patience/time ... and that if we wanted to we could call ahead to see if they have fresh oysters. Ambience and service one could best describe as "experiential" or "rustic" but the food is outstanding! Don't leave without trying the grilled oysters, with everything on. Everything being a secretive "herbs and spices" combination the cook/proprietor seemed unwilling to discuss. The alder smoked salmon was also wonderful. Prepare to spend some time absorbing your surroundings. Nothing here is pre cooked. We stop here about once a year on our way to camp at Cape Disappointment. My husband eagerly looks forward to the amazing smoked oysters. This year it was raining and my husband said "Darn I don't see the smoker going". We stopped anyway- and sure enough, it was too rainy and miserable to be out there smoking oysters. He got the sautéed and I got the pan fried oyster meals. Both were delicious!!! This place is a little quirky jewel in the town of South Bend, WA- everything is individually hand prepared- so it may take a bit and you may not get your orders at the same time, but it's great. read more

Showed up in the off-season actually looking for a different place. They were closed. We'd never been to the area, so we were just after whatever yelp said was good. My wife and I happened upon this contender for Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives...gracious! While the decor was "dive-y", the kitchen was spotless and the food was unreal. We played it far too safe and ordered the thin crust pizza...as we watched the process unfold, it became apparent that we should have ordered the house specialty - bbq oysters! I think they should change their name to The Oyster Griller. Apparently if you are not interested in having grilled oysters, or the process, you will be greeted with a cold shoulder. Upon entering this establishment I immediately thought, "This doesn't say Dining to me." More like "Dive" Almost turned around and left. We were then told to sit at a table right next to the door. The waitress almost immediately came to the table, and brought us water in a timely manner, but we needed a few more minutes to study the menu. Then when she came back my husband said he wanted the Deep Fried Oysters with baked potato. Menu said coleslaw, when available, apparently it was unavailable. I asked about the Swordfish to which I was told that they were out of. I then asked about Clam Chowder which she said she just served the last bowl and they are out of, so I needed a few more minutes to pick out something else. I then chose the Shrimp Gordita. We were seated so close to the door that the legs of my chair were on the door mat. Everytime, the owner/griller came in and out, it jerked my chair and shook the floor. After about 20 times I told my husband that we have to move to a different table. There were many unoccupied tables out of the way of the traffic area. So we moved. Take note that they DON'T take Credit/Debit cards, cash or checks only. We did not notice the sign (on the door, with the door propped open) until after ordering and waiting for 15 minutes or more. After noticing the sign my husband tried to ask the waitress a question about our situation as we only had plastic. She walked within 3 feet of our table multiple times with my husband saying, "Miss... "Excuse me Miss".. "Ma'am" He asked me if he wasn't saying it loud enough. I said, "Apparently not.". Finally he got her attention and she referred us to an ATM 2 blocks down the street. Thinking our food would be coming soon we decided to wait until we ate to go to the ATM. The owners were totally unfriendly and have mastered the art of making people feel invisible and unimportant. When the waitress finally brought my gordita she asked my husband if he wanted the dinner or the entrée. Rather late in the game to be asking this question. He reminded her that he had said, "With baked potato.". She then hollered to the kitchen to put in a baked potato. So I sat there waiting for my husbands food to arrive. How long does it take to deep fry some oysters, especially when his order went in first, After about 10 minutes I started to eat my food. And by the way you would think the shrimp would be the small prawn type, you would be wrong, looked like sauteed salad shrimp to me (see photos) I had thought we were eating a meal together. Service is very slow, don't stop here if you are really hungry, you might need a snack while you wait for your food. For those that don't care about service and hospitality, this place might be acceptable. These people could use a visit from Gordon Ramsey. The place needs a makeover and the owners need a course in Hospitality 101. read more

If you know what oysters taste like, and you like oysters....Major fail. We got there on a Monday, and the Oyster Shack down the street by the mediocre(more bad than good) coffee shop was closed. Avoid getting the Grilled Oysters. It takes away anything the oyster should be. All that sauce on it, is just killing it. Avoid getting the Salmon Sandwich, it's just a premade patty. The raw oysters are not really the size and variety you want for shooting or eating raw oysters either. I had to ask them for each ingredient for how to season/flavor them. I asked if they had eaten them raw before, and they said "no", lol! Kinda made me think...hmmm, where might these oysters be from, that they avoid eating them raw? Then I realized that they are just very unexposed folks that like things simple, and they are very set in their ways and those funny things project out. Its actually the best part of the the place, is watching them interact with customers. They are pretty rude, or at least unthoughtful. The big guy/ owner, as odd as he may be, the lady is even less serviceable. But a couple ladies, one being a fisher, she said to try this place. In her defense she did say she never had been there. If I could give zero stars I would. Do not go to this dirty disgusting restaurant. The owner's daughter "waited" on is and could not have been more rude. If you don't charm the owner by ordering the only thing he knows how to make, oysters, he ignores you. He actually left the restaurant after acknowledging all of the patrons who ordered them and left without even talking to us. The sign on the window said they had clam chowder. Nope. Rude daughter/waitress offers salmon chowder... Ew. The table next to us had some and they looked at each other like it wasn't good. Our order was a pulled pork sandwich and fish and chips. Ms. Rude couldn't even tell us what kind of fish we were getting. When it came out after 40 minutes it was greasy slimy crap. The BBQ pork sandwich was probably the absolute worst thing I have ever tried to eat. I'm not even sure it was not cat food with BBQ sauce on it. The bun was so over cooked that I couldn't cut it with a steak knife. It was the worst thing I have ever seen in a restaurant. This place is a dirty nightmare. BTW I have written all of this while in the bathroom with the worst stomach problem ever courtesy of River View. Had a terrible experience today. 1) Asked the hostess/waitress if they had a bathroom, she said "I hope so". Super rude. 2) Ordered tacos that were on the specials board. They said they were out of all tacos. Then erase them from the specials board. 3) Asked for water. Was given room temperature water. When I asked for ice, the guy who barbques said they only give ice if you order bottled water. HUH? 4) My husband ordered a beer that was on the beer menu. They said they didn't have that beer. Geez. 5) My husbands food was served to him. 10 minutes later I got mine. His food was cold by the time I got mine. Wow! 6) The food was as flavorless as the service and atmosphere. Will not go there again. P.S. As we were waiting for our food, I heard other customers ask if they could sit outside. The hostess/waitress said they could but she doesn't serve outside. She said they could order their food, then come get their plates and clean up the tables when they finished. Bad customer service. Also, a gentleman that was eating indoor (where she said she serves) asked for Tabasco. She told him he could get the Tabasco from another table if he wanted it. No customer service. This was by far the worst restaurant we have ever been to. Our over priced halibut sandwich had no seasoning and was served in a bun with bones and skin intact and fresh from the freezer fries. The waitress practically threw our waters and silverware at us and was rude the whole time. We were forewarned, both by Yelp and another business down the street. Oyster Nazi? Perhaps, but the BBQ oysters are downright special. You are right there on the bay, in the oyster capital of the world, right? You want oysters. The man tends the oysters very carefully. It takes a long while, and he employs several techniques in stages, including the mystery spray. The result is a piping hot oyster, bathing in its own savory juices and a yummy BBQ sauce with a little bite. It's not cheap at nearly $20 a dozen, but he earns it. I tried to replicate it at home, and didn't come close. And the man does warm up if you are friendly and like his food. So he's not Mr. Hospitality, but it's his place and he can run it the way he likes. As a side note, there is a cool German candy store two doors down. It's a great place to spend some time and dollars while you await your bounty. read more

So this place had the best smoked/roasted oysters and oysters taco that I have ever had. The smoked/roasted oysters were done in a smoker out side in the parking lot.. It was very cool!! The guy cooks them out side and you can watch from you seat while he does it. The oyster taco was great! If you are on you way to Portland and are going to be taking the senic route. Well.....After being seated, we exchanged glances with the other bewildered diners as we watched people being served and seated out of order. We were generally ignored by the one waitress/ dishwasher/ busboy/cashier/wife that tended to the guests inside. The Oyster Grill guy worked the smoking grill outside spatula in one hand, thirst quenching beverage in the other. We put our order in, and after nothing for 15 minutes, out came the chowder. I was so thirsty, all i wanted was our glasses of water but unfortunately next came the unceremonious plunking down of the Garlic Hot Dog Bun. I looked longingly at the other diners thirst quenching beverages but all we had were the leftover saltines and bits of smoked salmon from our (5 dollar!) soup cup. Finally the delicious oysters arrived and I felt my wait and waneing patience had paid off. I'm not sure if I would recommend the overall experience, especially if you're in a hurry, but if you like grilled oysters and have a patient sense of humor then do it. If you want fresh oysters this is the place to come. Just a small cafe but the food id awesome. We had the freshest oysters on the half shell I have ever had. Manuel the self proclaimed "oyster nazi" was awesome and owner|waiter. I had the pan fried oyster appetizer and oyster sandwich which was very tasty. My husband had the halibut fish and chips. They cook everything to order so it comes out hot and fresh. Will come back next time we come through. read more
