OMG! The best chowder ever! Tacos were fantastic! The service was a little different, but very positive experience.

We stopped here on our way down to canon beach. Not many options so we stopped here. My biggest problem was the service. It took a while for us to get seated and then even longer before we were helped. The waitress walked right by us several times and even helped a couple get drinks before us that were seated after us! The food: Stay away from the 'cheese bread' or 'garlic bread'. It was an opened hotdog bun with some melted cheese on it... Fried food from the 'captains plate' was too greasy inside and not very good. The one thing I did enjoy was what came of the alder wood grill. The salmon in my sandwich was actually very good. Willapa Bay oysters with a dose of neurotoxin? Had been avoiding Willapa Bay oysters ever since the news about imidacloprid use came out but a long road trip in the Olympic forest and coast whets your appetite real good. The grill outside is a very inviting image and it remained that, an inviting image. Was told they were out of oysters for grilling so had to settle for fried oysters. Batter was light and crispy; oysters were mild not spawny or strong. Can't really complain about demeanor. Owner was nice to greet from the outside and provide their awesome sauces but oysters are always better without those. And I was happy enough to be left in peace to enjoy the food with a bottle of Black Butte while enjoying the view across the street pondering when imidacloprid really takes hold. read more

Straight off the bat I will tell you that I drove up from Santa Monica just to come here. I read some of the reviews and I will tell you the owner is salt of the earth. He is humble and is an artist with the oysters. I have been chatting with him for the last hour and a half and he is a fantastic individual just like the first time I met him years ago. Grilled oysters can't be beat, oysters on the half shell are fresher than anywhere else at prices from 15 years ago. The place is not fancy, but every artist starts on a piece of wood with canvas stretched across it. I encourage anyone and everyone to come here. It's one of the oldest surviving places and this area needs tourist and foodie dollars. read more

For what you get... it is so worth the wait. The owner's are local and committed to quality. Engage them in conversation and you will have friends for life. Got lucky enough to eat some oysters in the half shell there once upon a time three years ago! It was great. I have been back 4 different times since. Each time driving many miles with a friend or my wife to see if there was a way to repeat that lucky day. No flippen way...closed in the middle of the day each time. When hubs initially wanted to order the grilled oysters, I told him I thought $20 for a doz was pretty steep. We get the raw ones for less than a dollar easily. But after seeing the owner prepare them, I think the price very fair. He actually pulled out a blow torch at one point. Srsly. So all the other reviews have already covered how incredible these oysters are. Don't hesitate to order this dish. I'll mention that they now have "Poor Boy" oyster sandies. It's a new item, so we weren't expecting N'Awlins good po boys, but the oyster was very lightly fried and they were huge and juicy. It was much better than the last po boy we had at some fancy restaurant in Newport. It's great to support a local family that take such care in the quality of the food they provide. Amazing. My boyfriend ordered the raw oysters, his eyes were rolling back he was so happy. They were super fresh. He also got the Mahi Mahi sandwich, and he said it was the best meal he's had on our vacation. The salmon chowder was homemade. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich, but they were out. He offered to grill a piece for me. I watched him grill it right outside the door. Everything was delicious. Service was friendly and felt very homey. I would make a point to go back. read more

Hands down the best and most extensive menu and quality food in South Bend, WA. Everything is fresh, and Manuel aimed to please. The grilled oysters with everything were superb smothered in supreme sauce and the pork street tacos I'm pretty sure were wrapped in fresh hand made corn tortillas. Surprised beyond belief. We walked in the door and we all thought, oh dear... We might need to turn around. The floors were cement, the tables from 1940, and the decor lacking. BUT, the food was amazing, delicious and so tasty... I mean soooo tasty. It is well worth going back again and again. We all had different food, the salmon burger by far was the best, but the fish tacos were superb, as well as the salmon chowder. Dang, unbelievable!!! We stopped here on way to Cape Disappointment and we're not disappointed the salmon sandwich was so amazing. We tried to order ribs but they said you have to call ahead. My mouth was very happy. You walk into the place and it kinda seems like it's not going to be good like an old diner but then you taste the fish or the oysters and know you made the right choice coming on in and staying. I had the sword fish sandwich and my wife had the halibut with fries. We each had a small cup of clam chowder. The chowder was great and the fish was ok however not many fries for the price. Expect to spend about $20 per person. Definitely fits the dive category. Service was a bit slow but the waiter, maybe owner, was very pleasant and accommodating after we initiated conversation. Place wasn't busy owner was eating his lunch and was cranky to have a customer. Asked to eat outside and the owner said I had to serve myself and bring everything inside. Salmon burger was a round patty from Costco greasy bun and they forgot the coleslaw. Oysters were covered with bbq sauce, garlic and spices? Flavour was awful and the price was high for the overall meal. I'd recommend to keep driving don't stop. Poor service and food quality. read more

my dad and I were driving thru south bend and were feeling hungry.....perfect timing we saw and smelled the delicious oysters being grilled out on the front patio....the inside of the place is nothing special, unless you count the view of the water and the boats....its cash only. dad and I split the grilled oysters and each had a yummy salad and baked potato( tho next time id split the potato). but everything was wonderful.....I had their homemade tamarindo.....maybe its not everyones cup of tea but I loved it. I am an Oyster convert! Seriously, as someone who has never liked Oysters, these Oysters on the Grill were some of the best seafood I've ever had. If you come here, you canNOT pass them up. The fried seafood and grilled salmon and swordfish were all great too. The swordfish was incredibly flavorful and is somewhere between a fish and a pork chop. :) Your dinner will take awhile, so coming here in a hurry isn't a great idea.... After reading reviews on Yelp, we decided to try this place out for dinner. I had the pan fried oysters and my husband had the deep fried oysters and we both had the baked potato and coleslaw. The food was so good! Everything was fresh and the meal was filling. We weren't able to have the grilled oysters since they had run out. The owner served us and was really friendly. Best oysters I've ever had, bbq'd perfectly by a guy so sure and skilled, he could give lessons to any TV chef, on the most amazing, cool and seriously effective home-built bbq/grill/smoker thing you've ever seen, using massive chunks of real, fresh alderwood - beyond that, he and his wife made us the best ribeye, bbq fish sandwich, fried mushrooms (they merited their own review!) french fries, sauteed veggies ... the killed it, every dish, every plate ... seriously, just great- we were sad when we got full because we wanted to keep tasting it all forever ... but we wound up with a doggie bag since, on top of all the rest, the portions are big, hearty and satisfying. We had a half dozen raw oysters on the half shell and although I LOVE oysters, these oysters were nothing to rave about. I don't know whether they were not as fresh as they should have been or whether the local oysters just aren't so tasty. But I was relieved that I only had 3 oysters to eat when I would normally eat a dozen. We also had the homemade clam chowder and it was just okay. Better than a gas station. Service was poor. The bill was pretty hefty but the food couldn't have been any better. The owner has been there around 10 years. He is from Mexico and is a wonderful man. Couldn't tell he was Hispanic at all. He and one other woman are the only people working in the business. He takes orders, gets drinks, cooks, cleans and takes out the trash. He's phenomenal. If you are nearby or happen to drive by the main road in this town, please stop and have the clam chowder, the raw oysters and most importantly the grilled oysters with everything. We were staying up in Bay City and stopped by this place one evening for dinner. My husband and I both were in the mood for fresh seafood and fish and chips. I ordered the halibut and chips and my husband got the captains platter. We both got chowder as well. The chowder was a little bland, but just lacking salt and pepper. Once we added that at the table, the flavor popped and it was delicious. As one reviewer said, more clams would have made it great, but that's pretty normal for most chowders. The real shining star was the seafood. It was fried to order and was in a perfect, light batter. All the seafood was crisp but not greasy. The batter had a nice saltiness that complemented the seafood. I give 4 stars simply for ambiance. The place was super run down, no paper towels in the bathroom, and we waited some time before even being acknowledged. There were obviously only two people working and there were a few tables already seated. A simple "we'll be with you in a moment, have a seat" would have gone a long way. This diner looks shabby and run down. Don't let that fool you. Meat and oysters are grilled on an outdoor BBQ and the serving sizes are generous. I had a BLT. The bacon was thick and meaty. Fries were served with course sea salt on them. I don't nomally eat restaurant fries but these were delicious. My husband had a thick hamburger that we estimate must have been a half pound of meat. My husband saw the best clam chowder sign so we thought ok we will give it a whirl... no one in there but us.. the person helping us was not unkind. Just indifferent.
