I will begin this review by saying I have been to this restaurant at least 3 times in the past, and have always been satisfied with my meal/service. My most recent visit at Riviera Maya was on a Sunday evening and it was NOT crowded. The host told us we could choose anywhere we wanted to sit. After choosing a booth in the back of the restaurant our server approached, brought us menus and asked what we would like to drink. My bf was going to order the jalapeno margarita (he had ordered previously, had enjoyed) but our server promptly interrupted saying it was not a good option and other diners had sent it back, not enjoyed, etc) I found this odd. We both ended up ordering traditional margaritas on the rocks and glasses of water. A different server brought us chips and salsa and filled our water glasses. Being hungry we ate all the chips quickly. We hadn't received our drinks at this point. (May I remind you the dining room has one other couple in it) After we finally got our margaritas, a server tried to take away my full water glass....like I was done drinking water and now just wanted alcohol. We ordered guacamole as an appetizer. At this restaurant they prepare it at your table and it has always been good in the past. Yet another server came to make the guacamole, asked us how we wanted it (spicy, medium, mild) and began to make it. He used ONE, I repeat one avocado to make our appetizer. The guacamole here costs $8.95. The giant stone bowl in which it was prepared looked like the leftovers taken from another table. It was overly salted, and had way too much lime juice. Incredibly disappointing. When our original server asked how it tasted, we commented that the portion seemed unusually small, to which he replied that due to the cost of avocados they had to reduce the amount they served. EXCUSE ME? And I still have to pay $8.95 for it?He offered to add an extra half avocado but we declined, asking that he not charge us the $5 shared plate fee for the fajitas we then proceeded to order. Our entree was good, I will admit, but the service throughout the entire meal was really poor. I had to ask for everything, and when my bf requested hot sauce (which took forever to receive) we were presented with tabasco. Tabasco? At a mexican restaurant? Weird. The food and the service from the waiter was great. My huge problem is the security. We had been there since 9:30pm and had just finished dinner. Around 11:15pm-11:30pm, the security personnel had approached our table (we were there with another group) and very sternly told us that the gentlemen had to remove their hats. They were rude about the whole thing. I don't mind their rules BUT they can make patrons aware of that as they are paying the entrance fees or they can approach the situation a lot better. Was there last night with a friend. We ordered the guacamole appetizer. Delicious! I had the enchiladas and they were also quite tasty. I asked them to leave off the sour cream, which they did. My friend asked for extra sour cream and then complied. Our bill had a $2 charge for the extra sour cream. Come on! Why ding us for that when it was as if I gave him my portion?? They also charged him $6.50 for 2 club sodas! My meal was $19, a bit more than the going rate for Mexican food. The guacamole appetizer was $13. That seems very high. First off, the food is less than mediocre. It really has no flavor to it. I'm just writing this as a warning, they will give you guacamole without asking if you want it and then charge you $11 for it. They seem to make money off of catching people off guard and adding extra items to the bill. Me and my girlfriends were there last night and we were having an amazing time. Food was good, service was good, our waitress was amazing, we danced the night away. Until we had to leave. As we were leaving we asked the security guards to take a picture of the 5 of us as we had not been able to get one all night. One of them straight up said no and the other one was hesitant but took the picture for us but when we were done, one of them (I think his name is Alvaro) decided to call us "perras" which means bitch in Spanish just cuz we asked for a picture probably thinking we were just some drunk girls. Then all 3 security guards decided to pretty much gang up on 5 WOMEN when we were trying to see why he called us that. They REFUSED to let us back in or even call a manager and honestly I was scared. I know we will NOT be going back, security is there to keep you safe, not harass you for asking a favor. read more

We live next door and love to walk to local spots for dinner. Stopped in last night for dinner and a cocktail. We sat outside. The only negative was the music was a bit loud. On the positive side the service was outstanding. We had no less than three staff pouring water, taking food and drink orders or clearing the table. Everyone has a smile on their face. Now onto the food. Chips and salsa we provided at no charge. Bonus. Dinner was great. Plentiful and not over the top expensive. My family had an absolutely wonderful meal in the dining room! We were so pleasantly surprised by the charming ambiance, absolutely delicious food, and great service. It was a little more expensive than we expected (costs a lot more than eating at bartaco), but it was SO nice that it was much quieter and more relaxing (bartaco gets SO loud and crowded), it was much better for our baby, and for us to have a relaxing meal in a quiet and well-lit, beautiful atmopshere. I rarely write Yelp reviews, and I left the experience feeling so happy about discovering a new hidden gem restaurant in our neighborhood and deciding that I must write a Yelp review to share the experience with others. I was completely shocked to see so many negative reviews on this Yelp page... the negative reviews are very different from my own experience. However, I do NOT think I would have enjoyed it had it been crowded or if there had been a DJ playing when I was there, like some of the other reviews described... I ate there around 6/6:30 PM on a Friday and it was very calm and nice and quiet, and also well-lit, which I really appreciated because that is hard to find in Downtown Stamford, where so many restaurants are dim and/or noisy. Food was okay but Be careful of them overcharging! We came today (party of 5) for lunch and turns out hey had charged us dinner prices for everything! Approx 25$ more than actual. They changed the bill to reflect lunch prices when i asked for menu to confirm without any debate. But then because we were a party of 5, promptly charged us 20% gratuity. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Came here with my sister before an alive at five event and the staff had an attitude from the moment we stepped in! When we were seated we politely asked to be seated at a different table with slightly more room (as I am 7+ months pregnant) and were told no. Then a waiter came to us and accused us of moving the tiny table where we were (we didn't)! When we insisted there was little room to move it, he insisted we had. Then it took forever to order and when we did order the nachos it was 10 chips on a plate with refried beans and cheese that has been zapped in the microwave for $10! They forgot the other stuff we ordered and never apologized. And throughout the time we were there they were constantly moving behind us to get to other customers and carrying trays and food literally over my sisters head since there was no room to move out tiny table!! I received the worst service from our waiter this past Sunday. I have been here about 3 times and not once has it been a good experience. Our waiter denied us something to get on the side. I went the weekend before with a family member and they were able to order it. The waiter didn't bring us water, never asked for a refill on our drinks, never checked in to see if we were okay. It was awful. The food itself is hit or miss. Some things on the menu are good and other are disgusting. The waiter didn't care about us at all. If you're looking for good service and good Mexican food--this is not the place to come to. read more

Went here for dinner. The hostess told us the wait was 20 mins. It took us an hour to get seated. It's fine it your restaurant is busy. But be honest about the wait. Once we were finally seated we had to ask for someone to take our order since it was taking so long. We also had to ask for forks since we had not received any by the time our food came out. They charge 50 dollars for a pitcher of margaritas that are full of ice. We had some cash and wanted to split the rest on credit cards. Which we explained. The waiter took it upon himself to keep the cash for a tip and split the bill between the cards. Unreal. NEVER again. Be careful when you are dealing with the check. read more

Came here to have a nice outdoor lunch with my friend this past weekend. It was beautiful weather to sit out with some drinks and we were both in the mood for Mexican. The food was good although pricey for what we did get. I ordered the flautas which are almost like taquitos and they cost 14.00. At other Mexican restaurants I usually see these listed under appetizers so I was surprised to see it offered as an entrée, and even more so at the price. The service was attentive, even if our waiter was being a little too flirtatious. The chips and salsa that came out before our meals was yummy. We ordered the sangrias which were some of the best I've had, but the 10 dollars per drink gave me a bit of sticker shock once the bill came. read more

This place is absolutely horrible. I have never dealt with workers that were so incredibly rude. On top of that, parts of my meal were never delivered yet I still had to pay for all of it. Even after asking several times where the rest of my food was and it never being brought to me. They brought me a check that was 3x the price it was supposed to be, and once they fixed it the guy hovered over me with his iPhone flashlight on trying to make sure I tipped him decently. This place is a great for slightly upscale Mexican food. Place is huge with multiple rooms featuring unique decor and an active bar area. Excellent guacamole and chips. Mains are surprisingly fresh and made of high quality ingredients and made in a relatively healthy manner. Is slightly expensive but overall worth it. Rule #1 CHECK YOUR BILL Ive been here 3 times in the past couple of years & each time there was always a problem with the bill. The first time they served us chips & asked if we wanted guacamole i said sure. $12 dollars for guac that we thought was complimentary. The second time they overcharged double for a drink that tasted horrible. The third time it was my sisters BDay & when i ordered a shot the waitress asked if it was my sisters bday, i said yes. Apparently that gave her permission to serve her a slice of cake, that i (DID NOT ORDER) & charge me $10 for it. & the waitress thought i didnt speak spanish as she told the manager that i was a liar and i dont remember ordering the cake. This bill problem has happend way too often in this place. I have no doubt that they are trying to take advantage of people & tourists that come here every year for the concert downtown.
