How much good stuff can I say about a restaurant before Yelp takes it down for being obviously a paid for review? Assuming the restaurant hasn't paid to get the good reviews left up of course. This place is everything that is right with America. Brisket, sausage, beans, potato salad, white bread, and sweet lemon tea. Every single item was delicious. I will be going back soon to try a rib sandwich and the banana pudding. Wow. My experience at this seemingly authentic establishment was truly awful and left a bad taste in my mouth, both literally and figuratively. I arrived with my family to celebrate a graduation and was optimistic once I smelled the scent of wood-fired Texas BBQ. Once I entered the establishment, the experience became uncomfortable and hostile. A group of seven large men entered behind my family. Not only were they loud and inconsiderate of the noise, but also began to harass and heckle my family. Some of the men tried to corner and harass my wife while simultaneously intimidate me. The owner, who decided to hide in the back, did nothing to assist my family and me. We ordered about $100 of what we assumed would be good Texas BBQ and proceeded to our vehicle to pick up our order via drive-thru. We received our food and drove five minutes back to our hotel. When we sat down in our room to eat what we hoped would be the only redeeming quality of the experience, we were seriously underwhelmed. The chopped brisket was 80% fat, the ribs were dry and over-smoked, the jalapeno sausage was so greasy we could've strained them and cooked an entirely different meal, and to top it off we were given one single ramekin of BBQ sauce even though the waitress assured us we would all have our own. If I could give this business 0 stars, I would. Control your patrons and serve better food. read more

First time train RJ. With there for lunch around noon assuming the food is fresh. Got a three meat plate, brisket, sausage,and chicken. They're moist. Brisket was dry and lean, the sausage had only one type not a lot of flavor. They're chicken looked reheated in the microwave and when I took a bite of the skin it was almost like pulling jerky. You can only get to sides with options. I was reading their articles in a business for a while. I'm surprised because the quality is not that good. read more

I heard a lot about this place, and was excited to try it... However, I really did not enjoy it at all. I had brisket, but there was a strange and off putting bitterness to the flavor. I struggled to finish my plate. I do consider myself a little snobby when it comes to brisket, but I would venture to say it was the worst I have ever eaten. I really wanted to like this place... Roman made it clear that his business caters to us and not the other way around. Roman knew we were grieving a loss, and he did not take advantage of our situation. We had the BEST catering experience with RJ BBQ. Our family was in a tough spot because the original catering company we booked to feed 150 guest after a funeral service canceled on us leaving us with less than 2 days to find a replacement. The owner of RJ's BBQ was extremely helpful and the BBQ was great! We had a wide selection of meats and even though it was a holiday, they still had staff come in to prepare sides and dessert and took care of serving all of our guests. During such a stressful time, Roman stepped in and told us that they do catering so they can cater to their customers and that is exactly what they did. Found this place in yelp, passing through on a road trip. It didn't look like much on the outside but it was truly a rare gem! The family running it was very friendly and welcoming and I loved the family photos all over the wall behind the counter. I ordered the brisket plate and he ordered the brisket sandwich. The meat was extremely well smoked and I loved that the sauce was served on the side and was a bit vinegary instead of syrupy sweet....and of course it's Texas so there was the mandatory sweet tea with lemon that was so good! He's currently eating the banana pudding and the groans of pleasure makes it sounds like he's found something as good as Grandma's! We had to get our food to go because we had dogs in the car but we will definitely stop here again on our frequent road trips! read more

For Texas this place has ok, average, decent barbecue. The sides are edible, nothing of note there. Not sure why but she gave me attitude about the amount I was buying. I was just eating for myself and so just ordered a quarter pound of two different meats. She was annoyed by that or seemed to think it was stupid for some reason, not really sure what the problem was. Oh, and you can't grab your own onions and peppers and stuff, the best places let you take what you want. It tasted like "good" bbq should taste; but in Texas it would just count as average. This is the best BBQ to be had in San Angelo. The brisket, ribs and sausage are all perfectly done. The sauce is great. The beans are better. And the potatoe salad... oh the potatoe salad. This is how smoked BBQ should be done. It is run by a single family, which is both awesome and frustrating at times because their operating times can change without warning. I have been here many many times and I was first introduced to this place back in 2009. I have since left San Angelo and returned to rediscover my love of this place. The smoked brisket and ribs are possibly the best in town. They are incredibly juicy and the seasoning is very much on point. I only recently tried the smoked chicken and did not realize that their seasonings worked so well on poultry as it did with their beef and pork. If you do go here, be sure to try their house sauce as it goes with pretty much everything they serve. If you are in the mood for desert and they have their banana pudding, get it. Amazing Que that makes your mouth water... I had been itching to try this place since I got here and boy was it worth the wait. Brisket had perfect smoke rings, juicy, tender, and rich flavor. Ribs were smoked to perfection and just outright mind blowing. The food here is done with care and precision. The beans weren't my cup of tea but the Potato salad was spot on. Their house sauce really enhances the smokey flavor of their meats and the prices are well worth admission to this delicious family owned bbq spot. Wow this place is amazing when it comes to BBQ, they have a pretty simple menu to choose from and you pay for your food after your done eating which is awesome. The customer service is very great and they make you feel like your welcome and just like at your at their home. Ive had one of the best experiences that I've ever had at a restaraunt. Disgusting. The food was well below sub par. Banana pudding was ok though. Brisket was terribly dry, tasted like it was just put in the microwave. Chicken was a one bite and put back on the plate kind. The kicker was the terrible customer service. We walked in and the lady looked upset that she has to stand up and take our order. Giving us attitude while ordering made my wife want to walk out right there. I regret not listening to her. Lesson learned. I will not be going to this place again. read more

Some people may say Pack Saddle is the place to go but I'll put any of RJ's plates up against Pack Saddle any day of the week and twice on Sunday :). I was passing through San Angelo on my way back to Albuquerque and I was craving some good Texas bbq. Stopped into RJ's and it definitely did not dissappoint! I ordered the combo plate with ribs & brisket. The meat was very tender and had a great smoky flavor. Terrific sauce and potato salad as well. I wish I could have tried some dessert but I was just too full. Run by an old couple- been there forever, run down looks- all ingredients for a pleasant surprise.The ribs were pretty good, not the best in Texas or anywhere else. I got in just in time for the last of the brisket, and was disappointed. it was dried out and had no body. I did like their homemade sauce though. And all the desserts were gone. Great BBQ all round. We got the 3 meat plate an shared it between two of us. We had ribs, brisket & sausage and sides were potato salad & beans. The meat was all tasty, nice smoke flavor and not too fatty. The brisket had a nice crust on it and the ribs were plenty meaty. Sausage was tasty with a touch of heat. Potato salad and beans were both tasty and better than your usual sides. Only let down was the sweet tea as it was made with non filtered water, here in San Angelo that means that it is bad. read more
