I've never ordered from there and I don't think I will. I've only gone there to pick up deliveries. I went to the place around 8:30 this morning to pick up an order. No one was in the kitchen because I think it was too early, but what I saw turned my stomach. The largest rat I have ever seen in my whole life was climbing up the pipes behind and over the kitchen. Down in Tacoma's Dome District in the historic Freighthouse Square, this burger joint really delivers on quality, taste and customer service. I am looking forward to getting back there and exploring more of what they have to offer. Freighthouse Square is in badly need of an update and hopefully the people involved will get organized to fully take what this place has to offer. That being said, RJ's is an outstanding spot to dine and take in the character of the area. It is a quick walk from the Tacoma Dome so that is fantastic for eating before concerts, sports and other events there. read more

UPDATE: We decided to head to Freighthouse Square for lunch today and had the goal of ordering something we've never tried before.... what a pleasant surprise was in store. RJ's has recently (last week!) added a 3-piece fried chicken lunch (served with potato wedges) to their menu ($8.95). OH MY GOD!!!! This was simply the best fried chicken I think I've ever had in my life, including multiple trips to Georgia where fried chicken is cooked to perfection. It was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I had to ask the chef - was it marinaded? Yes! For many hours - the seasoning and flavor went clear through - even on the breast, which typically is just a lump of chicken. Not here - every bite carried the flavor of the delicate seasonings - and it just fell off the bone - utterly tender and juicy at every point. Amazing. The seasonings are very unique - just a HINT of Indian cuisine (Raj, the owner, is from India) - but don't think "Indian Chicken Tikala" - this is NOT INDIAN CUISINE!! It's "Georgia style fried chicken" with just a delicate hint of the flavors of India - I really can't describe it better than that. Just try it.... in my very honest opinion, this is absolutely the very best fried chicken I've ever had in the greater Tacoma/Seattle area, and trust me - I'm a fan of GOOD fried chicken. I've never touched any around here that even comes close to this. Lastly, the service was wonderful!! The young blond girl at the counter came around often and asked about drink refills, do we need any dunking sauces for the fries, etc..... service you just don't expect in a food court. Wow!!! I think I just found another burger place that rocks my world! Ha ha! I ordered a Swiss Mushroom burger and onions rings and I am impressed! The burger was two patties slathered with melted Swiss cheese, garlic mayo? I tasted some garlic powder in there and loved it. The bun was thick on top and soggy on the bottom but that was in no way the restaurant's fault. As I said at the beginning of this review, I ordered this through UberEats and it sat in the bag for about twenty minutes while I washed my hands, found a clean glass for my beverage, shooed my cat away, etc. Okay, I also ordered onion rings and...OMG!!! The onion rings were soooooooo good! Seriously, these could be "crack", you know?! They were huge, not like the microscopic crap you get at Burger King. They know how to make onion rings at RJ's Burgers, that is for damn sure! Freighthouse Square is usually where I go to get a quick sweet at La Waffletz, but everything changed when I saw someone walk past me with a picture perfect RJ burger. I could not get the beautiful burger out of my mind, so I finally stopped by and had the original RJ's burger. It tasted even better than how I had imagined it to taste. It was a very very simple burger, but the two patties were flavorfully juicy, the vegetables were crunchy and fresh, and the fries were thick and crispy. Another great Freighthouse square gem I frequent...not to much into "burger joints" my asian side calls for a more exotic palette but ALL my guy coworkers order from here and as Im sitting there with my rice or curry or mexican order, I almost always can't help but steal a bite of that juicy looking burger they are munchin' on. RJ's offers a lot more then just burgers- They have all the all-american good goods -chili cheese fries, different kinds of panini sandwiches & wraps, the ciabatta bread they use is really good and moist not like most places all hard and dry, the best BLTs, Everything for b-fast breakfast burritos, full-on b-fast eggs and the whole nine-pancakes, ect etc, they give you a lot of fries so make sure to ask for extra ketchup-we always run out. Burgers are good, hot dogs are even better.Like I said my coworkers eat here EVERYDAY,,lol I don't see how some people can eat burgers and fries like EVERYDAY when theres so much more the world has to offer...LIVE ALITTLE! Had the Bison Burger here, and I thought the burger was real goof, had fries with it but their wasn't to many fries there and I tossed out probably about 6 of them. Wife had the Lamb Burger and that was also pretty good (but not as good as the Bison Burger IMO) Wish they still had the Pepsi machine- specially after viewing Dave's photo, but now its just a Coke machine with crap selection so for drink went with the Strawberry Lemonade which was ok. So for being skimpy with the fries, and not having Pepsi products or the Coke freestyle machine cant give them 4 or 5 stars. I told the cook I didn't like mayo and she told me she'd make the best burger I'd ever had with their special sauce (contains mayo lol) bihhh... hats off 5 stars for the short lady with an accent. Nestled in Tacoma's historic Freighthouse Square, RJ's is one of many food establishments that seem to be keeping the Freighthouse Square in business. I made it a point to seek out this restaurant and give it a try because of the reviews they already had on Yelp. 4 stars is usually a pretty good bet but this place is only 2 at best in my opinion. I went all in, I ordered the monster burger add bacon and made it a combo with onion rings and a drink. I also ordered a side of fries just to check them out too. The staff is friendly and brought my food to me at my table. I was supplied with ketchup for my fries and what I believe was tartar sauce for my onion rings however it was more like eating straight mayonnaise than tartar sauce. You can tell that everything is delivered frozen and they cook it up and serve it here. That being said, the onion rings were pretty good. The fries were meh. I've had better but I've also had worse. The burger looked really good but after getting into it, I didn't taste much flavor. The beef didn't seem seasoned and I should have been able to tell as the monster burger has 4 patties on it. Their signature sauce, the "not yet famous sauce" didn't add much to the sandwich. My bun was really good but fell apart quickly as it absorbed the grease from the meat and the pickle juice. My overall opinion of RJ's is that it's a middle of the road burger joint. Not too good and not too bad. If you're a transit rider looking for a quick burger, then this place will suffice. I say this because the Freighthouse Square is located directly across the street from the Tacoma public transit hub where the Sounder train, the Greyhound buses and the local and long range buses all stop to pick passengers up. This is an interesting place. It's located in an old building with a bunch of other small restaurants. It's a little dirty and extremely outdated but the food was actually very good and the burgers have that amazing flame broiler taste. Portions are good and prices aren't bad. 3.5 stars. RJ's is located in Freighthouse Square in the food court area. This building seemed to be at death's door because nothing was really going for it. However now with the Sounder Train stopping here commuters can duck into the food area quickly and easy to grab a bite to eat. The building is undergoing a remodel as we speak too since this will be the location of the new Amtrack station which will bring in more travelers and hopefully more business. RJ's has decent burgers for sure. The service is always very friendly and the food is solid. It may not be gourmet caliber like you get at specialty burger places but it gets the job done. Prices are pretty reasonable so that is a bonus as well. RJ's is involved with Ubereats which I think is really cool. You can get their burgers delivered to your home or work without having to deal with driving or parking in the Tacoma Dome District. Usually however in this area parking isn't bad unless a special event is going on. There is construction going on which makes the roads only slightly harder to navigate. Parking isn't too easy to find right in front of Freighthouse Square but if you go to the parking garage right across the street you can park in short term parking and enjoy your meal without having to rush. Ive only came in here for breakfast so far. What keeps me coming back? The Customer Service and the food. As early as I arrive they are friendly and ready to serve us with a great conversation as well. My go to items are the sausage or ham croissant or the sausage wrap. The prices are above reasonable. I always grab my coworker the bacon wrap and she can never finish all of it. I cant wait to try the oh so delicious burgers that i keep hearing about. We had RJ's again today. Really, my waistline will suffer if this keeps up. My (grown) kids order hamburgers from here. One day, they asked me if I wanted one. I got a bacon cheeseburger that comes with a pound of bacon (exaggerating, but wow, what a difference than Wendy's or McDonalds!), lettuce, tomato, onion and their not-quite-famous-yet sauce. It took me a half hour to eat it the first time, although I found my balance by taking off the second meat patty (it comes with two). Since then, they always ask me if I want from RJ's and the answer is always a resounding YES! Since I have no room for sides in my tummy, I don't order them, but my son-in-law likes the onion rings, and today my daughter got fries with her order, and they overfilled the little paper bag by twice what would fit in it. I got some. My tummy grew a little today. :) RJ's is located in Freighthouse Square, which I used to frequent many years ago. It seems I now have a reason to frequent it again, even though Door Dash is happy to bring our order right to our house. If you order from there, I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with the food.
