I work across the street and this is my go-to lunch choice from the square. I order their deluxe burger meal that comes with a cheeseburger (probably one of the best cheeseburgers I've eaten in the area), a lot of fries (trust me when I say A LOT, I can never finish them all) and a drink...all for less than $8. Nestled in Tacoma's historic Freighthouse Square, RJ's is one of many food establishments that seem to be keeping the Freighthouse Square in business. I made it a point to seek out this restaurant and give it a try because of the reviews they already had on Yelp. 4 stars is usually a pretty good bet but this place is only 2 at best in my opinion. I went all in, I ordered the monster burger add bacon and made it a combo with onion rings and a drink. I also ordered a side of fries just to check them out too. The staff is friendly and brought my food to me at my table. I was supplied with ketchup for my fries and what I believe was tartar sauce for my onion rings however it was more like eating straight mayonnaise than tartar sauce. You can tell that everything is delivered frozen and they cook it up and serve it here. That being said, the onion rings were pretty good. The fries were meh. I've had better but I've also had worse. The burger looked really good but after getting into it, I didn't taste much flavor. The beef didn't seem seasoned and I should have been able to tell as the monster burger has 4 patties on it. Their signature sauce, the "not yet famous sauce" didn't add much to the sandwich. My bun was really good but fell apart quickly as it absorbed the grease from the meat and the pickle juice. My overall opinion of RJ's is that it's a middle of the road burger joint. Not too good and not too bad. If you're a transit rider looking for a quick burger, then this place will suffice. I say this because the Freighthouse Square is located directly across the street from the Tacoma public transit hub where the Sounder train, the Greyhound buses and the local and long range buses all stop to pick passengers up. I love this place. First time I ordered it was online. I walk by there almost everyday. I was greeted by one of the nicest people (mona) shes super nice and makes excellent food. I usually get the bacon cheese burger (my go to everywhere). The turkey pesto sammie is good too. They have a good variety of stuff to choose from and it's really fairly priced for what you get. If your in the area or are looking online give them a shot you wont be disappointed. read more

I need them to be more creamy with their mushroom swiss burger. It was so dry and not mushroom swissy that Dairy Queen will do better for less i think. Nope. Never again. What a horrible, lowly experience! Maybe this wasn't the best choice for our first time in Tacoma, cuz it truly epitomized all the bad things we've heard about the city. I would rather the gossip be proven incorrect!! Hubby couldn't even eat half his burger, it was so disgustingly greasy, and my chicken burger might as well have been from the value menu at jack in the box. We both felt truly sick the day after. I stopped here for a breakfast item before getting on the 574 bus to SeaTac. It was 6:50ish in the morning and it seemed to be 1 of 2 places open at the time. A guy behind the counter was very helpful in telling me where the bus stop was as I got off the Link and didn't know. I got a sausage and cheese wrap and it was pretty solid and reasonably priced. RJ's is in a great location for regular commuters and visitors alike at the Freighthouse Square. It is situated right next to a major entrance/exit point to the platform of the Sounder train. The breakfast wrap is a steal at $4.69 (after tax). It consists of eggs, bacon, cheese and hash browns. I have a tough time finishing it! However, the best item is the Mushroom/Cheese Burger. It has been voted best hamburger in Tacoma by the Tacoma Weekly. It is EXTREMELY tasty! Do not miss out on this item! RJ's is one of those places that you don't expect much from. It looks like any other burger joint in a strip mall. However, this little gem is so much more than you would expect. The owners are awesome. The gal that takes your order, remembers you if you have been there a few times. She remembers what you want, how you like it, and even what you don't want on your choice. She is super friendly and goes out of her way to make you happy as a customer. The food is AWESOME, and no matter how you like it, she will do her best to make it that way. What's even more awesome, she has a separate grill for vegetarians and people who cannot have certain meets touch their food. So, for Muslims, Jews, and Vegans, she makes absolutely sure that your meal is prepared completely separate from the rest of the food. She has tons of choices for burgers, Sandwiches and breakfast items. She will even mix and match upon request. I get a Bison, Lamb, beef burger with bacon. It's awesome every time. Everything is made fresh. The patties are made, by hand, daily. So, this food is fresh, not frozen and just plain awesome. Great Food and Bomb burgers, the only reason I wouldn't give them 5 star is because they did overcharge me for some drinks. When I went to try and get the situation fixed, she kept saying there was no problem. The flavor was distinct (you could tell it was lamb, and it was seasoned well), it was cooked well (slight hint of pink) for my tastes, and the burger was a good hefty size. Their vegetarian burger is, hands down, the best that I have ever had before. I have also been here for breakfast, and their wraps are perfect in the morning. We were in town for Monsterjam and just got done with the pit party and we were all hungry and had 2 hours till the show started so we walked to Freighthouse Square and being Monsterjam & a wedding expo in the area we expected everywhere to be busy but what we encountered was off the charts rediculous for what we had!!!! We ended up here @ RJ's Burger Joint long line but waited, after about 25 min just in line we ordered 1 corn dog meal & 4 cheese burger meals, nothing fancy or special, we waited over an hour to get our food, meanwhile people who came in after us were already eating & some were done & leaving. some people who were also waiting forever were demanding $ back complaining but only being told what everyone was being told: we are busy and food is coming out as it is getting done, BS it does not take that damn long to make a corn dog & some cheese burgers!!! not only that but the joint looked like it was ran by a bunch of teenie boppers and the gal at the register was only full of excuses & rude & as she was taking orders of new people in line she was complaining to them and making them feel sorry for her that people are mad about not getting their food. The whole thing was just rediculous & not worth it at all!! There were so many pissed off customers while we were there I am suprised no one else reviewed their experience on here. When we finally got our food, all the burgers were like thin cold shoe leather, dry & gross, the fries were ok but cold & the the corn dog cold & chewy, the best thing was the soda! anyways that wasn't even the worst part so we finally left and got back to monsterjam and I started feeling really icky, my stomach felt so sick and I could barely enjoy the show! now the only thing I had different from everyone else was the corn dog, how the hell you can screw up a corn dog is beyond me but I was fine before I ate it and sicker than a dog for a couple days after then I was fine again. leads me to believe I had food poisioning from the corn dog. maybe the meat was bad or something I don't know but between that and the whole nightmerish experience that day there, we will NEVER return!!!! read more

OMG HORRIBLE! Terrible customer service. I went in with a group, ordered mine and my sons food, saw that they had mozzarella sticks as a meal and asked if I could order them as a side. She let me and told me it would be 6 dollars. Ok awesome :) Waited and waited for my food. The people AFTER me got their food before ours and they ordered the same thing.... Ok.... Finally got the food like 25 minutes later. Chicken was meh, fries were soggy. Now for the mozzarella sticks. Every restaurant, fast food joint I have ever been serves marinara dipping sauce with their sticks. They served with ketchup. I personally have never heard of this. I went up and asked if they had marinara (thinking maybe it was a mistake) They told me they don't have marinara. I said ok..... Walked away. After thinking about It I went back up and explained I was sorry I didn't realize they did not come with marinara could I please get a refund. They said Oh we have some! They went down to the Indian restaurant 3 stores down and got a container of curry I went back after realizing it was just curry sauce and they told me "well that's our marinara!" I said I'm sorry I don't eat mozzarella sticks with curry can I please just have a refund. They said fine, we will go get marinara. Unfortunately I am not great with sticking up for myself so a good friend went up and insisted on a refund for me and it was not even in the full amount. I was highly disappointed. read more

Best burgers in town! I am extremely picky about food quality and service, therefore i don't eat just anywhere and I have been eating here for a couple of years now, every Friday and I choose to eat here because the food is great- every time. I really don't understand the bad reviews, I've tried everything from burgers to chicken, fries to salad, and it's all been great. Perfectly crispy fries with just the right amount of salt. The mushroom burger is something my friends and I actually have conversations about how good it is. Lamb burger and grilled chicken burger are excellent as well.
