I tried a couple of years ago to visit this place it was packed due to a vintage car show. There was no way I was going to wait as the line to order was 25 people long. I went a couple weeks ago and was able to wait behind one person and ordered a Double Deluxe Cheeseburger, Frings (Onion rings\Fries), fry sauce and a Coke for my partner a Corn dog and onion rings. My number one complaint about burger joints\drive-in and it seems to happen on the west side of the state. They do not season their burgers, but this is not the case at Lefty's Burger Shack! Made it one dam tasty burger and I loved the house made fry sauce was delicious. My only complaint is that I only got two rings in me frings and that it took long time for the order to be made. My partner loved his corndog and the onions rings, which I do have to say they make some killer onion rings. Cool old school burger joint was BUSY yesterday! My son is a lefty so we stopped by when we saw it. They were having problem with register so only cash was accepted. After ordering it only took about 8 minutes for our food to arrive. The burgers were pretty average/ normal for what I think of with drive up burger stands. The fries and onion rings were exceptional, and each one is large enough that two people can share it. The price is very reasonable. The workers always provide great customer service no matter how busy they are. I eat here every few weeks and I've noticed wait times depends on business levels -- I've gotten my food in under 10 minutes and sometimes over 30 minutes after ordering. Waiting longer isn't an issue because I know the food is being made fresh. My only issue is their onion rings are never consistent, I've had them fried well and other times close to burnt. Also sometimes they stuff the bag and other times I've received only 5 onion rings in the bag. Perhaps this is a cook issue? If I'm going to wait over half an hour to receive my food, I don't want burnt onion rings. The burgers here never miss. I've always enjoyed my burger, I always receive mine fresh, hot and tasty. We arrived here around Saturday afternoon and there was plenty of parking for us to stop by. There were a few cars and a few people standing and waiting for their orders. They have quite the extensive menu so we took our time to see what we wanted as we were going to get bubble tea and dessert elsewhere. As we were looking at the menu, a lady who was our cashier asked politely if we were ready and once we were ready to order then to just come up to the window. We ended up getting a shrimp basket, mushroom burger, hot dog, and a side order of frings. There is plenty of benches that you can sit and enjoy your meal. We also love all the cute decorations and color scheme of the shack. We even got a cute photo of our dog. We got our order after several minutes but we noticed that we were missing our hot dog. However, the cashier mentions that she didn't hear that and that they were willing to give it to us for free. We thought that was so sweet of them as we were still ready to pay for it but they took it upon themselves to correct a mistake. The food was very good, we loved the juiciness of the shrimp and hot dog, the flavors of the burger, and the deliciousness of the fries especially with that fry sauce. Ok after serious deliberation, a Einstein level of mathmatics, and a small existential crisis, I have decided that this is the best burger I have ever had in my life. The double deluxe is the perfect balance of ingredients, packed with flavor, and all at a price that won't break the bank. I will say I am not a fan of crinkle fries, they are clearly the worst form of potato, however their onion rings are amazing. Service was fast, there was a constant line of about 3-4 people but no one was waiting long, they zipped through and got our food quickly. Lastly, that shake... I wanna start off with what was great. The service was polite and professional. My order was taken clearly and in a friendly manner. The food was where some stars were removed unfortunately. The burger was better than McDonalds in size, but the flavors were missing a bit. Everything was included but the flavor itself fell a little flat. Not bad but also not great. The onion rings were greasy and overcooked for my order. I could tell they were freshly made but just overdone. This also included the french fries as they were very fresh but also a bit tough. The milkshake was a vanilla that I got and it was very thick. A bit milky flavor and I'm for that so it was great for me. One of the surfboard seats attached to the building may need to get replaced soon as it felt like it might fall apart if you sit on it wrong but I liked the fun theme these seats are adding. We came on a brisk but sunny winter day in February, taking advantage of the dry weather to sit outside and enjoy our food before we go to the zoo. Stopped here because we were craving a burger and man did they deliver! First off, how cute is this little seaside themed shack?! The sides are painted with fun nautically humorous pictures. The employee was absolutely delightful. She took her time, looked like she loved being there and had a great personality. We enjoyed talking to her very much. My husband ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and vanilla shake, I got the regular bacon cheeseburger with a peanut butter shake, and our son got a jr burger all with a side of "frings" (a mix of fries and onion rings). The burgers were delicious! Juicy, melt in your mouth and full of flavor. The frings were perfectly crunchy down to the last bite. And the shakes were everything I needed and more. I was on my way to see a friend when hunger struck. I wanted something quick and Lefty's shack caught my eye so pulled in for a meal. I figured the line to order was a good sign. However, I discovered they are definitely not fast food. I'm all for fresh / made to order, but from the time I got in line to the time I got was food was easily 20 minutes, and I can't say it was worth it. Prices are very reasonable so there's that. The girl in the window didn't know the menu very well. I wanted to see if they could add tomato to my cheeseburger but apparently they don't carry tomato?! So it's just meat, cheese, special sauce and lettuce because I don't like pickles or onion. It's basically the size of a McDonald's quarter pounder. The burger was grilled more on the well done side and didn't have a memorable taste. I also got a vanilla milk shake which was creamy and yummy, but didn't entirely make up for the burger. I was hoping to use the rest room while I waited but they don't have one FYI. Tons of parking and a few tables outside if the weather is nice enough. Lefty's is my favorite burger spot in Tacoma. Their burgers are just perfection. They're like the perfect combo of Dick's and Frisko Freeze. Their crinkle cut fries are fire. Their chicken strips, shrimp, mushroom burger, veggie burger, shakes, literally everything. I've also never had a single bad interaction with the ladies upfront. Always super kind and personable. The place has a cool old school vibe and there was a good amount of people there during lunch on a Saturday. There are a few tables available for outside dining. We ordered a deluxe cheeseburger, a double bacon cheeseburger, fries, onion rings, a vanilla shake and a banana shake. There was a brief wait while they prepared our food, which was bomb! The fries were frozen crinkle cut fries, average. The onion rings had the most satisfying crunch ever, but still had a soft and tasty onion inside. The burgers were insanely good: basic, but also the best with a patty, chopped onions, pickles and sauce with the cheese melting perfectly into the sauce. The buns were lightly toasted. My companion swears that the double bacon cheeseburger was THE BEST burger he has literally ever had. The shakes were sweet with a good consistency. Decided to see what Lefty's was all about. It wasn't great and it wasn't horrible. It was really just average. Liked that they offered hot dogs and corn dogs and really was excited for the crinkle fries. We actually ordered Frings which was crinkle fries and 3 onion rings. Their fry sauce wasn't great either but we ate it. Menu items are a la carte... not a big deal but not the norm. When you add up the price of a soda, fries and a burger it is comparable or slightly higher but that wasn't an issue for us. There are other restaurants like Lefty's that's better but we just found it to be mid. read more

I honestly hate that I am writing this review but it's what I do. I try new places and I review them. I had hoped judging by the enormous lines that consistently form outside of this establishment that is was a sign of good things to come. Boy was I wrong! We visited on a day when the weather was not too good and so there was no line to wait in on this day. We placed our order from the simple menu on par with burger stands like Dick's or In-n-Out. You know, we offer a burger, cheeseburger, or the doubles of those with a couple other things type of menu. My wife ordered a double cheeseburger and I got a double, bacon burger. We both opted for the half n half consisting of half french fries and half onion rings but that was seriously disappointing. Overall they just aren't good. I really don't see why people line up for this food. They boast that their burgers are made to order but the beef was tough and grisly. Not like it had any filler but like they didn't trim the meat before grinding it. I honestly doubt that they grind their own beef though. The half and half was more like the 90/10 with a pile of store bought frozen crinkle cut french fries and then 4 onion rings per order. It's a shame too because they actually have the second best onion rings that I've had anywhere so I was a bit disappointed to only receive 4 of them. Their fry sauce is the basic mayo and ketchup but it wasn't mixed very well and we both ordered cokes with no ice that both came with ice so the attention to detail is lacking as well. We've been looking for a good burger joint to frequent and I'm sorry to say that Lefty's is just not that joint. What makes people line up and wait in long lines for this food? Solid burger option in University Place! Place is walk up to counter and order only (no dine in or drive through). Had a bacon cheeseburger and was pleased they would put "grilled onions" on it.
