The Roadhouse Cafe is my favorite breakfast spot in the valley. That is really saying something considering all the tasty spots around. While like others I appreciate the Roadhouse's committment to using local and organic ingredients whenever possible, it was the inclusion of a softball size hunk of homemade coffee cake with my meal that first sparked my love for this humble little cafe. So far I have been there about 5 times and have always gotten a special because they are so enticing. There has been a wide variety in my dishes, but what I like across the board is the generous use of veggies. In addition to the typical mushrooms and peppers you might get guacamole or sweet potato. On my last visit my companion got toast instead of coffee cake (something I could never do) and she said the toast was delicious. Drive too fast on Rt 9 and you'll miss it. It's a cute little location (with an unfortunately undersized parking lot) and the ambiance inside definitely ads to the charm. Fireplace, intimate seats. It can definitely be called homey. The Roadhouse is very much into organic, as evidenced by the multitude of large O's on the menu. If this makes a diference to you, then please add an extra star to this review. Frankly, I was just hungry. I got an omelet and itv was good, if not undersized. A bit expensive to boot. However, I really enjoyed how cheesy it was. Also got a side of homemade banana bread, which was equally good. I guess the bottom line is that I spent more than I would have at a greasy spoon breakfast place (which there are several in the area) and by the time I left, I was already hungry for dinner. Food was good. We went in on a Sunday morning for breakfast. The service was good. Only complaint was that the owner was talking to another customer that was seated next to us. The owner seems pretty friendly but has a very loud voice to the point it made the experience not so enjoyable. Next time we will just sit outside on the patio. read more

I always love a good spot off the beaten path. It's all organic, local, and therefore incredibly fresh-tasting. I've been four times. Unfortunately, my last experience was a bad one, but I'll cut them some slack because it was literally our waiter's first day on the job. He served pineapple in our fruit salad after my friend had told him about her allergy. He also gave me the wrong order entirely- I had asked for an omelette, not a sandwich. It was still delicious. That aside, I'd always leave feeling healthful, soulful, and blessed to know I had eaten at a place that supports local farmers. My only complaint is I wish they had whole wheat options for pancakes. Only drawback is its a little pricier than most for breakfast / lunch fare but well worth it. Especially for local and Organic. Best stuff in the place: The coffee (Pierce Bros. Fogbuster!), the homemade bread (baked on-premises), the specials (check dat whiteboard), the eggs benedict (PERFECT HOLLANDAISE SAUCE), the service (friendly as heck). Worst stuff in the place: the bacon (too thin and too little), the eggs (I like my scrambled eggs fluffy, not rubbery), that countertop they need to replace badly (they know!). Everything else is well above average at the least. They do, admittedly, have a weird theory on how to do waitstaff: Everyone does everything at all of the tables, which means that if not everybody's coordinated, some customers (hi!) might get inadvertently neglected. Also, some recent reviews of this place noted that the coffee wasn't up to par. They seemed to go through a period where they were arguing with their coffee maker (it's better now). Yeah, they're kind of expensive for what is typically considered greasy spoon fare, but consider that they don't actually do a very large volume (the place is tiny), and they do sell really good quality food (organic and locally-bought where possible). I have heard about this place for years and was never able to get there. I was looking forward to a restaurant that served good food. The food was alright. Nothing spectacular. My sandwich was soggy and soup lukewarm. I would likely have given it a 3 or 4. However the service was terrible! They serve your sandwich with a side salad on the plate. They do not put the dressing on the side, but pour it onto the salad. They mixed up the salads for us. My plate with a honey mustard and my companion with the balsamic. When the waitress finally stopped by our table to ask how it was, (the place was not busy but the waitress was scarce) I told her she had screwed up our salads. Her response was to laugh and throw out a flippant "Sorry". No offer of a clean plate to correct the error ourselves. No sincere apology for messing up our meal. No offer to take the plates back and replate the meals. I believe a wait staff reflects the values of the business. And if this service reflects the attitude of management, I will not be going back. read more

This is a general review of The Roadhouse Café from my perspective as a previous employee. The Roadhouse Café is a recognized restaurant in town with a creative and thoughtful menu. During my first year at Smith College 6 years ago, I walked into the Roadhouse looking for a part-time weekend job. Luckily, I was hired on the spot; and I can tell you that serving breakfast under the spunky direction of Joan Dahl-Lussier were some of the best Sundays of my young adult life. Working at the Roadhouse Café truly introduced me the dedication and perseverance essential to managing and maintaining a small business--qualities that have served me well in my professional career. First and foremost, the Roadhouse Café has always felt like family to me (literally and figuratively )--and that includes the clientele. And this is, in part, due to the fact that Joan is passionate about educating her staff on the importance of nutrition and healthy lifestyles. I always felt that serving at the Roadhouse Café was more than just plopping good food down in front of someone at a table; it was about making connections and creating an experience for customers. I remember talking to Joan after work about various films like Food Inc., Fed Up!, and Super Size Me, and why running a restaurant with real food was so important to her--in a way, her social responsibility. Breakfast at this establishment is organic and Joan and all of the staff are committed to serving fresh food. But something that customers may not be aware of is that running a small business with organic food is not an easy feat. It is costly and requires a great deal of planning and supervision, which is why the food is pricier than some of the other places in town--because it's local, organic, homemade, and innovative. And the Roadhouse Café is one of the few places in The Valley that offers a breakfast of this caliber. As an intimate small venue, the Roadhouse can only fit so many people, so there are typically two servers, one cook, a dishwasher and buser on the weekends, as well as limited seating. So you may have to wait on a Saturday or Sunday morning, but trust me it's worth it. Occasionally there are complaining customers or an error is made; that happens everywhere. And Joan is always accommodating, recooking an order or removing the item from the bill. I live in Boston now, but whenever I'm home you know where I'm eating breakfast. It's my favorite meal, and there are definitely mornings when I'm at work in the city wishing I could have Joan whip me up a Roadhouse Scramble with some onion dill toast. And speaking of onion dill...I've been eating the best bread on the planet for 6 years now and I've never reviewed it. Not an exaggeration here people. Onion dill bread is a revelation. So much so, that I stock up on it, something I've never done anywhere else, for anything else. To sum it up, The Roadhouse Café has a creative and thoughtful menu, a committed owner, and friendly staff that really make the experience. I was in Belchertown this morning and this place seemed like a good idea after an early morning haircut. A long time ago, when under previous management, they had an apricot walnut bread that was awesome so I figured I would stop in and see if they kept it on the menu. I sat at the counter, which was slightly sticky. The change left behind was amble proof that someone had been there just before me so naturally I kept my arms off the counter anticipating a much needed wipe down with a hot clean dishtowel. But it was not to be. I got up, and retrieved a used New York Times for reading and barrier material for the sticky counter. I ordered a 3 egg omelet with mushrooms and cheddar , side of home made corned beef hash, and the walnut apricot toast which they still had! Service was very quick and friendly. My meal came in short order but this is where I start crying the blues. First, the CB Hash tasted like cat litter...or sawdust. Not much flavor and too fine a grind for me. Next, the Apricot Walnut bread was very dry, lacked proper amount for spice and overall flavor was dull. The hash brown potatoes were not ground breaking by any means. Coffee was fine, the omelet itself was good. It's too bad that everything around that omelet was so disappointing. Though the person next to me was offered a refill of coffee during his breakfast, which was served about the same time as mine, I was not offered the much anticipated...much needed refill. Even though my cup was all but empty, she never asked. Bummer. And now the most disappointing news of all. The price. For a three egg omelet, toast, hash browns, and a small (and I mean small) side order of corned beef hash, my bill was over $14! For one person. I don't take it out on the waitress when the food is off so with tip, I was over $17! I will give this place one more shot in about a month, but for now I think they should change their name from Roadhouse Cafe, to Highway Robbery. read more

Don't go here if you're hungry. I waited for over an hour for Eggs Benedict while they were in the back looking up how to make the sauce for this breakfast. It was hotter than hell inside even with two dusty air conditioners running. There was only 3 people working and the cook was busing the tables. When it was time to seat us after 30 minutes, the cook and hostess/waitress pointed to where we were to sit. $40 for 3 people for breakfast is ridiculous. read more

I've been to Roadhouse numerous times over the years as a resident of B-town. It's a quaint and small place so if the parking lot is close to full you likely want to skip it due to limited space. There is often only one or two waitresses who get busy and don't pay attention to refills and such BUT they make up for it in quirky adorableness or just sheer kindness. The food is delicious and you leave full and happy! The homemade breads and coffee cake are wonderful and I feel welcomed when I arrive. I do wish that they would serve a more solid helping of home fries (which are hit or miss as to if their cooked to perfection or overcooked). At times, a breakfast sandwich my husband likes is cooked differently and this throws him off. I do understand how there are some lower reviews because we have had not so stellar experiences here with crowds and service, but I, myself, have never had a bad meal here. I love this place. It looks like a rural diner, and it is, except that everything is organic and healthy and tasty and not greasy. Their homemade bread are really good and their specials are usually unique and tasty. This is a great place for vegetarians and vegans. People who demand meat on their breakfast may not like this place too much, though. I went to the roadhouse cafe for the first time this morning with my husband. I wanted to try it out as it advertises that their food is fresh, local and organic. Let me start by saying that there was nothing fresh, and highly doubtfully organic about the food. I ordered a green tea, which was just a Lipton tea bag in hot water, no lemon was offered. We both ordered eggs with toast, bacon and homefries. My scrambled eggs were mediocre, not disgusting but not delicious either. My husband's over easy eggs were barely cooked, he could not eat them. The homemade bread for the toast was ok to me but my husband thought it had a weird flavor and texture, like it was frozen. It certainly wasn't freshly baked like they claim. The homefries had a weird blend of seasonings on them that gave them a weird taste. There was also a lot of little burnt pieces in mine. Must have been the end of the batch. My biggest problem was with the bacon! I can tell you there was nothing fresh about the bacon because I'm quite sure that it was that pre-cooked microwave bacon you can buy at the supermarket! As far as service; the waitress was very nice and attentive but It took a long time for the food to come out, and I'm not sure why, because it seemed like most of it was cooked in a microwave. Overall I think that this restaurant falsely advertises what it really serves its customers. I expected much better quality, very disappointed and will not return. read more

This was one of my favorite places of all time but the last two times I've been there have been very disappointing. I'm thinking maybe the chef has lost her passion for excellence. The staff is always friendly and thats a plus. Today however, their pleasantness couldn't make up for the service being sub-par. It was a little busy and trust me, I get it, the world doesn't revolve around me, my chick and my kid. Our food was dropped and we then lost our waitress. I couldn't tell her that whatever came out as "French toast" was NOT "French toast" and please bring this back. As a chef, I would have been embarrassed to send that out to a customer. On a side note; I told the waitress (when she came to clear my plate) and she told the cook who came back with the old "thats how I always make it" excuse and took it off our bill. Not the point lady...get your passion back. I still left enough money for the original bill with a tip of 20% from the original bill. I never blame the waitress for how the food is. The food has always been great, but oh man is the service awful. This restaurant needs to invest in training and hiring a staff that can handle being busy. Or maybe hire a couple more competent servers. Don't ever try to get your hands on their gluten free bread by the loaf. Though it's advertised on their menu, you have to order ahead. But good luck! Great coffee and I'm not a coffee drinker. I was glad to see they cater to those who have special healthy requirements. They have stevia as a sugar substitute which I was overjoyed to see because I am diabetic and cannot use sugar or any of those fake alternative sugar substitutes. Never disappointed. NOT GLUTEN FREE FRIENDLY. POISONED ME AND OWNERS WERE RUDE TO ME ABOUT IT. I used to go here all the time because they had so may gluten free options. One time I ordered gluten free toast and they gave me regular toast. I have not had regular toast in over 5 years so I did not think any of it. Everything is home made and so their gluten free toast is generally fluffier than the hardened sponge stuff you get at the grocery store. After I got home, I realized that I had been fed gluten and got very sick (I have Celiac's Disease). I called them and asked them about it and they said it had been regular toast. The owner told me she would not give me my money back on the meal because there was no way one of her servers would have made that error and that I had made it all up. I will never be returning. The food wasn't that good anyway. The home fries are awful and a lot of the food is microwaved. It is way overpriced for what they actually serve. The service is also painfully slow. read more

We have been coming here for several years. I think today may have been the last visit. All three of our meals had problems- both pancakes were raw and the homefries were completely uncooked. This was after it took 45 minutes for our food to come out and had asked for well done homefries. Unfortunately, with all of these problems with the food the service did not make up for it. There were no apologies and we had to ask several times for one of the raw pancakes to be comped (because it was actually removed from our table and no replacement was brought out). We miss the days when the servers were prompt and friendly. Sunday breakfast used to be my favorite part of the weekend here, but sadly I can no longer recommend it. read more

Friendly service, great food, warm atmosphere. Today, I had THE best omelette I have ever eaten: Roasted root vegetables with fontina cheese, side of delicious potatoes, and coffee cake. Turnips, parsnips, carrots, and whatever else was in it made for the most delicious breakfast. Everything is organic, or locally grown, or both. I say this right up front because here's the downside: The Roadhouse is expensive. Yes, you're paying a premium for eco-friendly food, but while you don't entirely feel like you're throwing your money away, it still stings the wallet a bit. Because of these prices, you'll find an interesting customer base of local townies and Mercedes driving, cardigan wearing, down-the-nose-looking Amherst snobs. Luckily the food is great, including the coffee selection. I've gone here a few times and each time it has been yummy. Yes, the place is small and funky, but the coffee and food were excellent. The omlettes are great and many have raved about their breads (which are indeed good) but their waffles are the best thing I have had on their menu so far. Some have criticized the bacon, but natural bacon tastes like that. Most of us have become used to the chemically treated, artificially smoked stuff you get at the supermarket. It takes a little getting used to. As for the price, it depends on what you order. If you are on a budget, there are plenty of things on the menu that won't run up your bill. read more

I have been here at least 3 times in the last 2-3 months. I have gotten specials the last two times and they have been DELICIOUS! The food is so flavorful and melts in your mouth! The servers are welcoming and chatty - I am never in a rush when going for brunch, and have never experienced the poor or slow service other reviews have stated. So I was on my way to UMASS and I like to find places like this because they usually appreciate your business. I drove by the usual places DD MCD's and others. My son and I sat down and ordered a Croissant breakfast sandwich and a bagel. Soon after our arrival two more customers showed up and placed an order. The food they ordered came out way ahead of mine and my son's. We waited another ten minutes for our food and when it did finally arrive it was good. The organic claim is just that a claim. My sons bagel was from the grocery store. I sat less than ten feet away from the flat top but the cook could not even deliver the food in the correct order. I received an apology for the service but why does it need to be this way. Is it incompetence or something else. If you are going to serve food and expect repeat customers be nice. read more

On a beautiful Sunday morning I found myself once more in my favorite breakfast place, Today I ordered stuffed french toast with fruit and a yummy blackberry sauce on top. What a wonderful little breakfast place. The waitress are wonderful, eager to please and smile! This is my local hang out, yes sometimes when it is busy one has to wait, however it is well worth the wait. This is the best place Belchertown has to offer. one pay's more, however if you want quality, freshly made Organic food one has to pay more, The Road House is Brilliant! read more
