I've been here a dozen times but I've never enjoyed my experience as much as I did Saturday night. I had a few friends in town who love a good Old Fashioned, and I told them the best Old Fashioned in Seattle was at Rob Roy, so off we went. As always, the old fashioned(s?) were on point, but we also had incredible service from Alex, with a smile that lit up the room. Alex was incredibly friendly from the moment we came in, and was even willing to share an incredible tequila recommendation we would have never tried otherwise. I'm not going to lie but my friends and I entered this bar on Friday because I had to pee and I was pleasantly surprised with the urinals. This was the first time that I've seen citrus fruits arranged nicely inside of the urinal. Kudos to whoever arranged and replaces these fruits on a regular basis. Pure magic. Anywho, their HH the drinks and food are half off, they have FREE goldfish and "pho" ramen (basically a beef cup noodle with one thai basil leaf and a slice of lime). We ordered several drinks and a few of their food items including the meatballs and pasta, breakfast sandwiches, and "pho". Everything I tried was surprisingly good, and the portions were generous. The drinks were amazing, I had a Tom Collins and their punch which was really good. This place is intimate and perfect for small dates. This review is for the Black Lagoon pop-up bar only. I love Halloween and couldn't wait to stop in for a spooky drink. And the food menu looked delicious, too. It was entirely disappointing. No food at all! The decor was a weak effort, as if it had been done in about 20 minutes -- my own front door is creepier! The drinks were expensive--I expected that. But I didn't expect that they were all pre-made. Yuck. So we finished the tiny drinks in 2 minutes, paid the hefty tab and went to Indian food around the corner. Wow, came back 2 weeks later and service was the worst ever and I got charged for drinks that I didn't even pay for (will need it to go through so I can contest the charge on my credit card). Came here on a Friday at 4pm, I get it, it's super busy but they know they are going to be busy and only had 2 servers working here. Took a minimum of 20 mins to get our drinks and to get our bill, even longer. Again, I know it was packed but they should account for that. We had one tab for our group and asked for our check (they already had a card on file) and some of them went to get food and they already got drinks by the time the check finally came. Again, looked at my credit card and see 2 charges. There should only be one. I wouldn't come here on a weekend, a weekday might be better. Been here twice for miracle on 2nd, probably won't come back because service was so poor. read more

I came here during the Miracle on 2nd pop-up where Rob Roy is turned into a Christmas themed bar. First of all, the decoration is on point, including a sketchy mechanical Santa in the back corner en route to the bathroom. They take Christmas seriously, and I like it. I was initially worried about the popularity of this pop-up and insisted that everyone in our party get there at 4PM to thwart and potential lines and waits. We had a group of 10, with about 6 of us getting there before 4:30 and the rest trickling in over the course of an hour. At 4:30, the place was already 60% full; I guess people in Seattle like their pop-up bars! We grabbed the front section, which has two couches that seat 4, plus additional one-seater chairs (there's also a second section with a similar seating arrangement). In the rest of the bar, they have high top tables for 2 and seats along the wall. For groups, the website suggests arriving at 4 or 7, which makes sense given that the bar really started to peter out at 6:45. Now that the logistic are over with, onto the Christmas drinks! The majority of us were feeling chilly with the below 40 degree weather this December, so we all ordered Bad Santas, which is a mulled wine + port concoction that comes in a Santa mug. It's strong, warm, spicy, and fruity, and a great drink to get especially if you need some warming up. Others ordered the egg nog (cold, but really excellently mixed where the alcohol is barely noticeable), and the Yipee Ki Yay Mother F****r!, which you should order for the name alone. All great. I'll definitely want to try this place out when it's not covered with bows and wrapping paper to see what their perennial cocktails are like. For now, enjoy the holiday cheer and hopefully get a seat because this place is popular! read more

This place is hidden in plain sight. I drive by every day and never noticed it. In fact, I noticed Marrakech, Shiro's, and Buckleys. This place is directly next to Marrakech. Dark, pre-prohibition, black diamond stuffed walls (remember those couches from the 70's? Those are the walls here). They pay great attention to crafting old, classically made drinks. I dare say this place actually made my absinthe better than my favorite craft bar - though somehow it was STRONGER than I think it should have been. They had "my brand", Pacifique. You'll see by my pictures that they know how to make it. They didn't ask me odd questions like "how would you like that made?" that clearly indicate they have no clue how a proper French absinthe is made. The place had 2 people supporting the bar and it's been crazy busy. I won't hold the slower service against them. I'll come back - hell this classy joint has all you can eat goldfish. Come on - a proper drink and goldfish? You want this - don't worry I won't tell. read more

Wow this bar is a hidden gem! Compared to other "speakeasy" type cocktail bars, I would say the presentation for the drinks here is a bit lacking but definitely not lacking in taste and creativity. Drinks feature lots of custom mixers, floral ingredients, as well as eggs! If you like sours, this is your bar! You must get the saffron sandalwood sour. It is my favorite! The scent of the powdered sandalwood is just divine! Also drinks featuring jenepy! I much prefer it to chartreuse or absinthe. There is no crazy setting drinks on fire, dry ice, cute tiki umbrellas, or exotic goblets, however. That's okay though, I appreciate the simplicity. Maybe that's why the drinks are $2 cheaper compared to other cocktail bars in Seattle. The bartender was super friendly and perhaps laughed a bit too much at what I was saying to my friend but I loved the intimate atmosphere and had a great time. There were cocktail recipes written on the wall in the women's bathroom. I will definitely be back! I think this place might become one of my favorite cocktail bars in Seattle. It's so much more low-key, affordable, and accessible compared to Needle and Thread and Canon in Capitol Hill. read more

Wow! Not sure how it is that I've never been here but we popped in for a drink while we wait for dinner reservations elsewhere and am delightfully surprised by how cool this spot is! It's got a classy but not snooty vibe, the waitstaff is super helpful and knowledgeable and the old fashion is on point - perfectly balanced with a large rock and delicious cherry. If you want to be served or more like ignored by a GROUCHY bartender go to this bar. Stopped in Seattle to catch our cruise and read good reviews about this place & decided to try it. We had 6 in our party but had to split up because lack of seats. Three of us decided to sit at the bar. We sat there with the bartenders back facing us. We were the only ones sitting at the bar & he turned and saw us. Did not greet us or ask if we'd like to order. Asian looking, glasses, wearing Aloha print shirt. Minutes went by and we had to flag him down to order. He actually looked like we were bothering him. I have never experienced a bartender come off like that. The drinks took long, very unremarkable and when we done, once again we had to flag him down for the bill. On the bright side, another waiter grabbed out payment and was quite friendly. He did take the time to tell us that the bill would include a 20% tip in the total. I doubt grouchy guy would disclose that. Final thought: if you wanna tip for crap service go to this bar. Not sure what the criteria was for their award- certainly wasn't for good service. read more

TLDR: Skip this place. Belltown Provisions and Bathtub Gin are way better (both within 2 blocks). Used to be one of my favorite cocktail bars (pre-covid), but lately the service has gotten quite bad. After enough negative experiences, I finally complained to the owner Anu via email. Instead of thanking me for the insight, she instead defended the unprofessional behavior of her staff. Further, from her response it was obvious that she did not fully read my descriptions of the incidents. She just assumed I was either lying or perhaps just being overly sensitive having my personal space inappropriately invaded by an aggressive bartender. I won't bore ya'll with the whole story, but for $20 a cocktail, the experience should be pristine. I won't be back. And besides, cocktails and atmosphere at Belltown Provisions and Bathtub Gin are way better anyway (both within 2 blocks). read more

But I gotta say, if you charge near $20 for a premium cocktail, it's gotta be a little something special. Like creative flavors, new tastes, hard to find liquor....I dunno, I'm not a craft cocktail maker, but something inventive. No one in my party got that. I guess you pay for ambiance and location. Belltown is one of those areas that, when asked, I always describe as the place where you go to interact with ex-frat bros who get hopped up on jaeger bombs and redbull-vodkas. And that's not a compliment. In fact, when I'm at a usual favorite like Canon or Zig Zag, I usually make a smart ass joke to the bartender by saying something like "yes, my friend and I will have a couple jaeger bombs." The result - we and the bartender(s) laughing, followed by the real drink order. I made the mistake of doing this same joke at a bar in Belltown one time, and I had to practically chase the waitress afterwards to stop her because she took us seriously. Rob Roy is one of those few exceptions in Belltown where the atmosphere is low key, and the drinks are great. It doesn't get packed to the point where you can't hear yourself talking or can't find a place to sit, but that doesn't mean it lacks customers. The scotch and mezcal offerings are more than decent, and the staff is awesome. I can't pay enough compliments to their genuine demeanor and prompt service. Sorry I spent more time talking about Belltown's general douchiness, but in this case, Rob Roy sets itself apart as a great place to have good drinks and good conversation, whether it be with your company or the people who work here. read more

BE WARNED VERTICAL LICENSE HOLDERS. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN. (COMPANY POLICY) I was so excited to attend their holiday pop-up, but now I might never return. My brother is a paleontology buff and I was so excited to surprise him with a night out in BellTown, and more importantly, Rob Roy's holiday "SanTaRex" drink in a collectable dinosaur shaped mug. Although it was freezing, we waited for a half-hour in a line that wrapped around the block only to be turned away at the door because my brother is newly 21 still has a vertical license (which won't expire for another 5 years. He's not paying for a new license just to get into a dark, small bar). I was allowed to go into and up to the bar (with my horizontal license mind you) to still try to secure the mug for my brother only to be rudely told off by the clearly overwhelmed bartender they had sold out of them. I don't know if they will be reordering/restocking the mug, but with their limited hours, small space, and antiquated ID rules, I will just have to take my business elsewhere. This place was dead on a Saturday night. Their drink prices are really high is probably the reason. There was only one waitress and one bartender so service was slow. Our waters were refilled often at least. The seating arrangements are nice big couches and chairs for groups to lounge on. A lot of bar-stools along the wall. So seating is plentiful in this small bar. There is even an outdoor patio area to sit although people were smoking out there yuck! read more

If you're in Seattle, definitely check this place out. Probably one of the best cocktail bars in the city. It's a small little place in Belltown but once you go in the atmosphere is really nice and warm, kind of like you're going into someones living room to relax. A good general rule of thumb for gauging how good a bar is is by the quality of their ice. We had ordered a couple of negroni's before heading out to dinner, and the bartender took out a massive piece of crystal clear ice and started hand cutting it! I've yet to see this at any other bar that I've been to in Seattle. They also try to push new and interesting cocktails as well. As others have mentioned, they have a drink that has actual gunpowder inside, and it was actually really good! You have to be a crazy person to come up with an idea where you balance gin and gunpowder. If you're ever around belltown, you don't want to miss this place. read more

Wow, I like this place. For a bar that most of my friends have never heard of or been to, Rob Roy was a nice little surprise, serving up excellent drinks in a moody and classy little lounge. Our group of about 15 came here last night for my final farewell, taking over most of the space towards the front, with all the swanky leather couches. I won't even pretend to remember which drinks I had, since they came close to numbering 15 by the end of the night, but I can say that the majority were very well-made, both classics and Rob Roy originals alike. Many of these were bartender's choice, and all but one (which may very well have been a straight shot of fernet) were excellent picks. Again, the decor and overall vibe of this place is noteworthy, managing to pull off a moody and sophisticated atmosphere in a very un-Belltown-like fashion. Even their bathrooms are somewhat interesting, with the walls being covered in recipes for their original cocktails, and the men's urinals using slices of fresh fruit as fresheners. And heck, even their business cards are nice enough to make mention of here. Service was also top-notch, with our waitress handling all our orders easily, and managing to keep everyone's tabs separate without a hint of trouble. As further proof of how awesome she was, when asked by Xander S if she took orders, she replied with a teasing "I take orders REALLY well." Rob Roy easily tops the list as one of my favorite bars in Seattle, vying with Liberty for first place, though they may have completely different vibes. read more

One of our many happy hour spots during our trip was Rob Roy in Belltown. Their happy hour is from 4-7pm. Happy hour cocktails were $6 each, wells $5 and beer is $1 off. Here is what we got: - Colonel - bourbon, grapefruit, apricot liqueur, cane sugar - Ok. Light on alcohol. - Prince edward - scotch, lillet, drambuie - Not a fan - Huntsman - vodka, trinidadian rum, lime, cane sugar - Like this. - El tio nonillo - mezcal, pear liqueur, dry vermouth, amaro nonino - Ok. - Del sol - chile infused tequila, mango puree, grapefruit, lime, mint, agave nector. Amazing. My favorite spicy drink! SERVICE: Fast. Not much interaction so can't say much more here. AMBIENCE: Love the space. Loved lounging here. DRINKS: So of all the drinks we got, favorites were the sangre del sol (spicy mango tequila drink) and the huntsman (vodka, trinidadian rum, lime, cane sugar). PRESENTATION: Presentation is awesome. Amazing decor, drinks, and service. This establishment has it all! For our foray downtown, we stumbled upon this gem and were served classic drink perfection. They use only the best liquors and are super flexible in helping you to concoct your ideal beverage. Our waitress was the best - so nice and patient! It wasn't overly crowded or crazy on a Saturday night, so its perfect for a nice date, catching up with friends, or just hanging out. To answer Jill T., the Rob Roy /is/ the kind of bar that doesn't have malibu rum. The cocktail menu is filled with classic drinks that encourage a few short starting sips to adjust your palate. Be prepared for strong, savory flavors, bitters, and even egg whites. Go elsewhere if you want the standard sweet cocktails. The Rob Roy gets points for $4 wells at happy hour, but their cocktails are only $1 off. If you want unusual happy hour cocktails then Zig Zag is the more economical choice, if you don't stray from their menu or stay past 7pm. That said, a well constructed $8 old fashioned with bourbon is still a good deal. The Boston Sour was interesting and the Hemingway Daiquiri was highly quaffable. I'll definitely order another old fashioned, but would probably skip the other two to experiment with other drinks on their menu. Their macaroni with frizzled onions is also quite tasty, and can help buffer the extra happy hour drinks. There's some low couch seating up front, bar seating, and some 3 tops near the wall. If you arrive early enough to catch the couches you can probably squeeze 6-8 around the table if some don't mind standing or sitting on blocks. The bar was fairly quiet at 5:30 but started to pick up by 7pm. Also, the men's room gets an extra dose of class with urinal fruit instead of cakes. More of a 3.5 stars.. Came here on a Friday around 10ish. Love the ambience! It is a cute little cocktail bar in Belltown. It is a bit more on the noisy side, but it isn't intolerable, you can defo still have a conversation. The drinks are good, can't say they are stiff drinks, but they are well balanced! Rob Roy offers a lot of good spirits in their cocktails. You can tell that the menu was at least thought about for a little bit. I must say that what Rob Roy does best is their more refreshing cocktails. So it's a bit ironic when you order a Rob Roy and it isn't the best thing in their menu. Another down fall of Rob Roy is how expensive their drinks can get. I understand that some of those drinks are super premium, but I don't think it warrants it to be $22, especially when it isn't the best version of a Rob Roy. All in all, I would come back! read more

Swanky bar with really really good drinks. Went with the girlfriend on a Monday night and it wasn't too packed. Started off with two shots of Thug Passion, which was sweet and delicious. Following the sage advice of Ben, our friendly and knowledgeable bartender at the Zig Zag Café, the girlfriend and I took our happy asses to Rob Roy for a pre-dinner cocktail. We appreciate a well-made cocktail, especially if it's original. Rob Roy, from first impressions, seemed to be the kind of place that could scratch our itch. Rob Roy is a comfortable, laid back cocktail joint with an eclectic, if not downright wacky, décor that says, "Drink here!" We bellied up to the bar where we were very capably served by Bryn, our personable and professional barkeep. Bryn makes a good drink. I had the Midnight Water, a bourbon-based refresher with Averna, sugar, and bitters. It was bourbon-y goodness. For my second, I ordered the Jack Foley Smash, a Kentucky corn whiskey drink with lemon and mint. I'm not sure a Kentucky hillbilly would want lemon and/or mint "polluting" perfectly good corn squeezin's, but I personally thought it was a great, much less sweet, take on a mint julep.
