This place is phenomenal. Owned by a Central American restauranteur and built on the site of an old country convenience store, Roberto's serves uncomplicated food, flawlessly. This is not a place where you'll find the latest food trends; but reliable, honest, stick to your ribs comfort food. Recommended are the fried catfish topped with crawfish etouffee, the roast duck, and the beef tournedos. All dishes cooked to perfection. The waitstaff couldn't possibly friendlier and helpful when it comes to recommendations or special accommodations. They are professional and efficient. Roberto's is not cheap and they don't take reservations; but it's sure worth the money and the possible wait. read more

You will not regret the short drive along the Mississippi River levee. Every dish I have had here over the years is great. Whether you are in the mood for seafood, a pork chop or a steak you will not be disappointed. My recommendations are the fish in papiolette, shrimp Roberto or the duck. Definitely a hidden gem. You have to look for this place to find it. However, it's worth the drive. The fried green tomatoes we're cooked perfectly and the sauce really complemented the flavor of the tomato. We also got the daily special ahi poke nachos which we're out of this world! The fish and avocado were so fresh and light, and we'll paired with the seasoned tortilla chips. I found the crab and brie soup to be a bit heavy but was very flavorful and full of fresh crab. I really enjoyed the seasoned fish of the day with almonds and hollensase. The portion was perfect and the fish was cooked just right. The let down was with the dessert. The pecan pie resembled a tart in both size and texture. The pecans essentially fell out of the pie and the crust was very gooey. The bread pudding was dry without the sauce and the sauce itself left something to be desired. Our server Tara was on point and made sure we always had what we needed. One of my favorite restaurants EVER! I love good ole country food, and this is as good as good ole country food gets with a slightly refined atmosphere. Just pulling up to the old house on River Road you know the food is going to be good. Then you walk in and you're seated in what appears to have once been someone's living room. I have pretty much tried the entire menu and I would have to say my personal favorites are the Roasted Duck St. Gabriel, the Catfish Billy (catfish filet topped with crawfish etouffee), and whatever special they have on the menu. It can get very packed during lunch time and dinner rush hours so you may have to wait a bit, but I promise it is worth the wait! read more

I came here for lunch and it was well worth it. With the wood paneled walls and wood floors, the atmosphere gives very nostalgic vibes. I had the crawfish étouffée and it was delicious! The green beans that came with it were also flavorful, seasoned with fresh onions and bacon. Blair, the gm is also friendly and I had a great server, which made the experience totally worthwhile! This place never disappoints. It doesn't look like much from the road but that's part of it's charm. Shrimp and grits appetizer is excellent. Roberto's is about a 45 minute drive from our house, but we have often said we would like to try it. Well, date night came around and we decided to make the trip. It was a Saturday night and the place was busy. Because it was just the two of us we were seated immediately. Our waitress was friendly and helpful with menu suggestions. I settled on the stuffed drum, while she ordered a shrimp pasta. We also ordered fried alligator for an appetizer. The alligator arrived within a few minutes. It was tender and matched well with the creamy dipping sauce. Next, the sensation salad, which was sensational. Often the dressing overpowers the salad, but not here. As we were completing our salad our entrees arrived. I could tell by my wife's face after the first bite that her dish was delish. My stuffed drum was very good, although with something of a muted flavor. We topped off the night with a malted chocolate caramel pie. It was a creamy, sugar high. It was worth the drive, and we will do it again. read more

It's a well hidden gem of a restaurant we have in this area. I had no idea of its existence til I started working at one of the plants down the road from it. We often come here for lunch. Some of my reoccurring favorites are their fried green tomatoes appetizer; catfish billy; and warm seafood salad. Still have to try there dessert items. I took my husband here for his birthday dinner Saturday night. We hadn't been in awhile, and they've remodeled the inside a bit which looks great! (Apparently it was done 2 years ago, it's almost a crime that we haven't been back in that time!!) They don't take reservations, so just know there might be a wait! We didn't have one at about 6:45 for two. Our waitress was Adrienne and she was great! She was polite, attentive, and timed our meal just right, we never felt rushed or ignored. We brought our own bottle of wine, corkage fee is I believe $12. We shared an appetizer of BBQ Shrimp&Grit cake. Looks good, tastes good, wish there was more of it but it's a good sized app to begin with. For our meals I had the roast duck with mashed sweet potatoes and green beans, and my husband had the steak with lump crab meat over mashed potatoes with green beans. I ended up taking home half of my duck, and my husband cleared his plate (and gave it back with his requisite: "It was terrible" line, it makes every server smile, though if it's out of genuine amusement or sheer pity, I'm not sure). Dessert was a slice of the chocolate caramel pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and it tastes like a milky way candy bar! All in all it was a great meal at a restaurant with character and good service. The restaurant's namesake, Roberto, makes his way to every table to check on you at some point during the night as well, which is a great touch! Bri cheese and crab soup? Delish! Add some shrimp and pour over pasta and I would have been in heaven! Crawfish Étouffée was great, a large portion that we could share between two people. I am not sure why it's served with broccoli? Side salad was good, nice romaine lettuce and tomatoes with cheese. Ranch dressing was very tasty! Good bread! Atmosphere was jumping! I've been to Roberto's a few times, but just had a poor experience there. I ordered a ribeye, which was listed on the menu for $25. The steak was great (the food always is), but when the check arrived, it said the steak was $34. I was wondering about it, but my wife said she thought the menu said the ribeye was $34, so I thought maybe I had just misread it. When I got home, I checked on their website to see what was really up. There I saw that the Rib-Eye was listed at $25, just like I had read in my menu. I called them up, and was told by the woman on the phone that the Rib-Eye is $34, and that it went up because they are using a new source of beef. I told her that the online menu said it was $25, and that I specifically remember it being $25 on my menu, and I suggested they check their menus for one that has the old, incorrect price. She said that she doesn't think an incorrect menu would have gone unnoticed for the past few months since they changed the price. Which is a load of crap. If there was one menu that had the incorrect price, it is totally possible that no one using it has ordered a ribeye since they changed the price. I was upset to be charged more than I was expecting, but I can handle that mistakes are made and things can get missed. What really bothered me about the experience is that I felt I was treated like a liar. Where would I have come up with the former price of $25 if I hadn't seen it on their menu? After such an unfortunate experience, I just can't see myself going back. There are way too many places out there that actually want my business to waste my time with one who won't listen to a customer who is just trying to help them out. read more

Roberto's is in a funky oldish building left over from another American town that is crumbling apart from neglect. A BR friend suggested we eat here while in town. I usually fret dining suggestions in the US as there is nothing exceptional to be found in them. However, Roberto's had a small surprise for me in the Shrimp over Catfish with a fondant of onions. Just moved Into my new home at the preserve at Harveston. Decided to yelp restaurants close to where I was. This restaurant came up with good reviews so I figured I would try it since it was only 4 1/2 miles away. On the outside it doesn't look like much as it's an old general store. the inside was very cozy. The food was fantastic, and the servers were extremely attentive. My son got the pork chop with mashed potatoes and green beans. He said it was really good, Rivaling French market bistro's pork chop. I got the grill chicken Alfredo. It was every bit as good as what I have gotten at Gino's restaurant. Will definitely go back! read more

I absolutely loved the food here! I love that they have so many options as far as how they prepare whatever you get. If you're looking for great seafood but are tired of always getting it fried you'll love it here. They have daily specials, great appetizers, soup, salad, desserts, and drinks. What more could you want? Also the atmosphere is nice too. It's an old house with tons of little rooms and one big open space too. Visit date: 12/29/2010 My brother who lives in Baton Rouge, LA with his family had heard good things about this place. So we decided to try it out when I was visiting from out of town. My brother got the spicy shrimp pasta - I do not remember the name of it. It came with a side salad and side vegetable. The side salad was lettuce, 1 cherry tomato, and some shredded cheese on top. My nephew got dibs on everyone's cherry tomato. The side vegetable for the day was succotash with beans, corn and ?alligator sausage. My brother seemed to like his dish but was not astounded. My sister-in-law got the shrimp, crab and brie soup (the soup-of-the-day). We all had a taste of it and thought it was very creamy and flavorful. She also got the shrimp and grits and seemed to enjoy it. I got the crawfish mornay linguini. I did not know what 'mornay' was but it apparently it is a cream sauce. It tasted like...crawfish tails, cream sauce and linguini - little flavor and nothing brought the dish together. I loved the succotash which also came with my meal and would have been happy to have just made a meal of that. Entrees came with a small piece of garlic bread. Shared chocolate chip bread pudding for dessert - the chocolate chips seemed to be melted in the bread pudding. Could not taste much of the chocolate, no hard sauce and not even any whipped cream on top. It was good but unmemorable. Pros: Good succotash and soup, nice ambiance, friendly waiters. Cons: Some dishes lacked flavor. read more

Overrated, underwhelming. Pros: -Authentic river road ambiance. A good visual taste of South Louisiana for visitors from afar. No kitschy creole manapalap, just real been-here-forever patina, almost but not quite approaching the line between authenticity and shabbiness. -Very casual. Despite the prices (high for Baton Rouge,) a t-shirt and jeans are not out of place. Cons: -Amateur hour service. Our waitress made me take my knife off my plate. Our wine was served in dirty glass: they were both smudged and they left a smear of mustard, or something, on the table. -Sub-par food execution. My date's Catfish Billy was half-burnt, which we were not supposed to notice because it was covered with etouffe. My Sauteed Fish of the Day (drum) came out without the sauce or garnish. When I asked the waitress, she took it back and brought it our correctly dressed. She or the kitchen should not have left the execution of the food to my memory of the menu. My date doesn't like Romaine, so we asked for our salads to use spinach instead. The stems were left on the spinach and many of the leaves were rotting. -Value: the shaky food might be forgivable at lower prices, but at $18 to $20 for an entree, I expect basic quality control. I might go back when my out of state parents come to visit. Especially if they're paying. Otherwise, I think I have a better chance at a good meal elsewhere. read more

Roberto's is a go to for my wife and I. Went Friday night and AS ALWAYS we had a great experience. She had the STUFFED CATCH OF THE DAY Seafood stuffed fillet baked to perfection and finished with beurre blanc and substituted the Truffle Smashed Yukons. I had the STEAK SPECIAL CHAR-GRILLED FILET OVER TRUFFLE SMASHED YUKONS JUMBO LUMP CRAB SPICY HONEY BUTTER Two great meals! Steak you can cut with a fork and cooked to perfection. And the Truffle smashed yukons were oh so good. Somehow I managed to save room for the CHOCOLATE CHIP BREAD PUDDING with WHITE CHOCOLATE KAHLUA BUTTER. We have NEVER had a bad experience if it was just the two of us or a large group. Service is great and food is fantastic. Ready to head back for the next great dinner. Trust me, if we have a bad service or bad food we don't go back but that is not the case here.....we LOVE Roberto's! read more

Unless you live in University Club, you may not know about Roberto's. It's a little drive from Baton Rouge proper but definitely worth it. I was lucky enough to have a friend on a cleanse (no drinking for her) and talked her into driving! There was a hefty crowd on Friday night but our table was ready in about 10 minutes. This was my second visit to Roberto's so I really wanted to hear the specials...which turned out to be right up my ally. I started with a crawfish bisque and at first, was thrown by the crawfish being so ground up. But the flavor was great and there were enough mudbugs to make up for the size. For my entree, I also ordered a special. The filet topped with soft shell crab and a creole sauce....WOW!! This was truly great! My steak (ordered rare) was cooked perfectly and the crab was the best possible icing on this cake. Even the sides, mashed potatoes and veggies, were tasty. The potatoes tasted of smokey bacon goodness!!! My cleanse friend was even able to order a fish dish topped with shrimp and a side of veggies...without butter (no dairy for her either). The waitress was very accomodating to the special request and made us feel that it was no problem at all. In my opinion, the food, atmosphere and service are more than enough reasons to warrant the drive!! read more

The epitome of a mom and pop restaurant and the reason I steer clear of chain restaurants. It is it off the beaten path, so If you have to drive, it's worth every minute. The charm and character of the building is an added bonus however their food is the highlight of this restaurant. It is consistently delicious and offers a spin on the typical LA seafood delicacies. An all time favorite is the river road shrimp dish which I haven't found another restaurant to serve in this area. Be warned it is very spicy. The étouffée is another dish that's another go to and some of the best you will find outside of grandmas kitchen. The wait staff is always attentive and friendly. They do not accept reservations and they are usually busy so be prepared to have a wait. A bar area is available to sit and relax with a cocktail and a very smart small remodel added a foyer area with benches to sit if you have children. This is a must for anyone looking for great food and atmosphere. read more
