After wanting to eat here for years, I finally made it there to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary! It's right when you hear, "don't let the outside turn you away, it's what's on the inside!" It's a VERY old building! Was very busy when we went but luckily we didn't have to wait long! I ordered the Beef Tournedos, my husband got the Catfish Billy and my daughter got the Grilled Chicken Alfredo. I tore into mine so fast, i forgot to get a photo! The Alfredo was enough to eat and take home leftovers! My beef tournedos was so tender and the topping was yummy! I made sure not to have leftovers! Ahhh, Roberto's, located in a charming rustic cottage on scenic River Road (the part of it that isn't overrun with chemical plants) in lovely, Sunshine, Louisiana! I realize I say this far too much but why in the name of all things holy did I wait so long to eat here?! It is the cutest little place, rustic and unassuming, but when you sit down to eat, it's serious business. This food is fantastic. Mostly seafood, with the exception of a token steak or 2. We started, after our brief wait at the beautiful bar, with the fried alligator which was of course delicious. I'm usually more of a blackened alligator fan but this was a nice treat. Lightly breaded with their delectable and tangy remoulade on the side. YUM. For my entree they had some sort of a broiled fish dish with basil, garlic, and crab that I could not say no to, so I didn't and it was a taste explosion. Sweetness from the basil, a nice char on the beautiful fish filet (which I believe was redfish), and succulent crab meat on top - clinching the deal. The entree also included soup or salad, a nice value added to the meal. All in all, this is a great "occasion" place as its a bit of a drive and a little on the pricey side but it's sure to make whatever you are celebrating very special. I have been hearing about Roberto's through friends all of these years, but have never been. My hot date suggested a dinner date, and I couldn't turn him down. Who turns down food? Not me! Lol We went on a Sat night and the place was packed. There is a little bar area at the back of the restaurant that you can either grab a drink or just hang out with a friend or two. I guess I came with a bigger expectation, bc I was a little disappointed in the food that night. For appetizers, we shared the fried green tomatoes topped with crabmeat maison and a seared tuna a long side a tomatillo sauce. I wasn't a fan of the chilled crabmeat maison...too much dill? The green tomatoes were however fried crispy to perfection. For entree, I ordered the Fish En Papillote and he ordered the Roasted Duck St. Gabriel. The fish was fresh and each flake got better and better. They didn't over season the fish, so the natural taste was clean and simple. The lumps of crabs on top were literally to die for! His duck's skin was fried/roasted to crispiness! I wish we would have told the kitchen to leave the sauce on the side. I wasn't a fan of their blueberry compote. As if that want enough....he decided to order not one but TWO desserts!! We had a few bites of a sad store bought pecan pie and the bread pudding was such a disaster, we barely took a 3rd bite. The food was overall great, our table had a variety of appetizers, all were good...the only negative comment I heard was the Shrimp Roberto was really really spicy. I had the seafood gumbo which was great, my hubby got the seafood platter and it was great, and they really hook you up. The only negative was it took a while to get seated...but that's to be expected in a relatively small restaurant with a large group on a Satirday night. read more

I've never eaten dinner here. Just lunch. I am lucky enough to have responsibility at several plants in the area near Roberto's and have eaten here on several occasions. This place gets crowded fast. With a line at the door when it opens at 11:00 am. If you get there at the height if lunch, you might have to wait for a table. The entree prices are a bit high for lunch, so I stick to the large salads and sandwiches. They offer several special's for lunch. One of my favorites is the Buffalo shrimp po boy. I always get that if it is offered. Today when I went, it was not on the menu so I got the debris po boy. The bread was soft and fresh. A nice serving of beef with grilled onions and topped with cheese. Yummy! Served with a large portion of fries. A go cup off iced tea finished off the meal. I've long been a fan of Roberto's, going back a few years now but - for whatever reason (insanity? alien abduction?) have never written a review! I remember my first invitation to join someone for dinner there. I had never even heard of the place and as we drove out Nicholson toward St Gabriel I was thinking, "Where are we going?" And then we headed toward the river, got to the levee, turned right and after a half mile, drove up to what - on the outside - looked to be an old General Store - repurposed. The layout today is a little different with more open space and seating - but there was (and still is) a certain rustic charm to the place, lots of beautiful old wood, obvious wear and tear, creaky floors, walls with a painting here, a picture there, a bellows, a farm implement, and a fixed stair case in the middle of the main dining room going up into a dark and mysterious looking attic. I fell in love with the place immediately. The menu we had that night has not changed much in the intervening years - why mess with perfection? That being said, I have never been to Roberto's when at least one of the specialty, off-menu items didn't introduce a great degree of difficulty in making a decision on what to order. It's one of those places where, the first thing you try is SO GOOD, when you come back you don't want to go anywhere else on the menu because you hate missing out on it! Still, I have managed to pull myself away from old favorites over the years and have sampled pretty much everything on the menu and, basically, everything on there is pulling its weight. Just close your eyes, drop your finger onto something - and order that. It will be good. On this most recent visit - it was a special occasion with some dear friends and we kind of blew it out a little, ordering every appetizer on offer - fried alligator, seafood gumbo, fried green tomatoes with a special remoulade sauce, eggplant crab cakes (wow), shrimp and grits (perfect) - and warm french bread and butter. You can make a meal out of the apps, easily. For my main, I had the Crawfish and Portobella dish on a bed of linguine pasta and a delicious Mornay sauce, partnered with some steamed broccoli. Others had the Catfish Billy - always a winner, and the Fish en Papillote - parchment wrapped catch of the day baked with herbs, lemon, wine, etc. Wonderful. Especially noteworthy tonight was the 8 oz Filet Mignon, topped with lumped crabmeat - cooked medium rare - MELTED in the mouth. At the end of the meal - we also blew it out on the desserts - getting about five different ones and sending them around the table - Top honors going to Aunt Terri's Pecan Pie, Salted Caramel Bread Pudding, and New York Style Cheesecake. All of this was capably handled by our server, Rose - who did a wonderful job! As always a great night. If there are any limitations at Roberto's I would say this: The bar is kind of cool and cozy - the spirits selection is limited. What they make - they do well. You just wish for a few more options. So, for example, in the bourbon area - there is very little selection. It's a minor complaint though in the scheme of things. One of the best meals I had on my trip through Louisiana. The fried green tomatoes were the best I've ever had, and that before you get to the crab meat they pile on top. Our service/waitress, Adrienne was amazing. The food (from beginning to end) was exceptional!!! The sautéed redfish with almonds was mouth watering!!! The manager was dismissive and very disrespectful! She has zero customer service skills! I have never been treated so poorly! There was absolutely no excuse for the lack of tact and customer service! I made what i thought was a reservation at 8, waited at the the bar until 8:50, until we were spoken at, instead of spoken too, that we had a "call ahead". Which means regardless "yall" have 10 minutes to order before the kitchen closes. All of this without, any greeting or salutation, and this was done by management. Welcome to Iberville parish! My family and I are from out of town to attend a funeral and our loved ones suggested we go to Roberto's for a good meal. Upon entering the building, we were not greeted. Now I want to add we were also a Black family walking into a restaurant with mostly White people eating and 1 Black cop... So we are standing at the entrance and waiting and waiting. I finally walk to the bar area and I ask do we seat ourselves with a smile, The waiter/greeter behind the bar scowls at me and says, "I'll seat you in a minute". I absolutely adore Roberto's! The restaurant is super rustic with a laid back atmosphere. I met a friend for supper and the food did not disappoint. The river road shrimp appetizer is one of my favorite things on the whole menu. The bread boule is filled to the brim with peppers, shrimp and an amazing sauce. I could, quite literally, lap up the juices left in the plate. I ordered the steak special. It was a New York strip with potatoes, green beans, lump crab meat on top. Amazing! Dessert was the white chocolate banana brownie a la mode. OMG. So good we almost ordered another. Our waitress was nice but kinda strange. Maybe just ditzy.... Top of my list for Louisiana gourmet Creole cooking. About 10 miles south of LSU on river road sits a 150 year old building that in the 1850's housed J.J. LaPlace & Son's General Store. Don't let the outside fool you, this place is a diamond in the rough. The food is incredible and South Louisiana based so there are plenty of seafood choices. Crab & Brie soup, Shrimp & Grits, Pasta, Steaks, Duck, and nightly specials hanging on the chalk board . Portions are big so save room for dessert, the bread pudding is insane (the night I was there they had chocolate, vanilla, and apple cinnamon all made in house). This place is incredible. My wife and I met some friends here for supper. We had never heard about it before their recommendation. Don't let the outside pictures dissuade you from going here. The seafood is amazing and easily ranks in the top three restaurants I've ever been to for seafood. Bacon wrapped stuffed fried shrimp!!!!! Unbelievable chicken and sausage gumbo. Had lump crab meat dip appetizer and was looking for more bread to wipe the plate clean. The waitress told us that was the first time she had seen that appetizer and she has been working there for 18 months. This should be put in the regular rotation for sure. My wife's sautéed fish (black drum) with ettoufe was flaky and so flavorful. Price is on the high side but we did take food home. Can't wait to return. Their gumbo is the best I've ever had and even though I'm not a dessert guy, their malted chocolate caramel pie is hands down my most favorite dessert ever! Every bite of it makes my eyes roll back in my head! There simply is nothing better! I "discovered" Roberto's while I was working in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina in 2005-06 and have wanted to go back since then. Last week I took my wife and kids on vacation to Louisiana and Roberto's was a MUST! After a week of eating wonderful food throughout the state, we all agreed that our meal at Roberto's was the best! If I were a rich man, flying to Baton Rouge just to eat at Roberto's would be worth it! Roberto's has always been one of my favorites. Tonight I felt my meal was not up to their usual standards. My catfish billy seemed as if it been prepped and been sitting under a warmer. The crawfish etouffee was not moist as if had been sitting awhile. Strangely the catfish was very hot while the etouffee was not. Odd. The servers were dashing around and everyone just seemed frantic. We skipped dessert and left. One year later. Lunch with friends. Five stars. This is the Roberto's I have loved. So glad we ditched the usual seafood places in Baton Rouge and took a little drive on River Road to get to Robertos. I hear the restaurant is housed in an 1850s building that used to be a general store. I love me some history! The decor is rustic--wood all around--nice comfortable chairs for diners, spacious tables (thank god for that as restaurants seem like they're cutting down on table sizes to fit more people in). I got the fried green tomato appetizers and they came topped with spinach and crab meat. Yum yum! For the main course I got the spicy River Road shrimp pasta and the husband got the Fish en Papillote. Both were delicious! The pasta came with shrimp, bell pepper and onions in a spicy butter sauce, with a side of sauteed green beans, and the fish came with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans. It was soft and flaky and flavored just right. Both entrees came with a side salad and bread. We would have loved to cram some bread pudding in, but were too stuffed. We ordered BBQ Shrimp & Grits appetizer, Crawfish & Portabella & Papillote entrees, and pecan pie for dessert. Entrees came with green beans and mashed potatoes and salads. At home, we turned this into a multi-course meal for 2 using the Crawfish & Portabella as a pasta course before serving the fish en Papillote. All these choices held up very well in a warm oven before we were ready to eat. It was an absolutely perfect elegant, delicious dinner for a special night when we said good-bye to 2020. When my family and I left Nottoway Plantation in White Castle, La, we were looking for a great place to eat. We heard about Roberto's from a friend, who told us that it was amazing! Don't be alarmed when you get there, however. Although the exterior looks like a shack, the interior is decorative and a great environment. My husband and I both got the seafood gumbo, which was very delicious. As an entree, I got eggplant crab cakes, filled with lots of eggplant and crab! My husband got the 'sensational salad,' which ironically enough was sensational! My son got shrimp Roberto - stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon and fried, with mash, and string beans.
