I had high hopes for getting an oil change here after reading all the amazing reviews! However that wasn't the experience I had unfortunately. I called ahead to see if they had room for an oil change if I got there in 30 minutes and was told yes, and that the oil change would take 40 minutes. Cool, no worries... I'll take a walk while it gets done. But when I arrived I was told there were 2 cars ahead of me and they could get to me in an hour...with quite a bit of attitude. Bummer! read more

I had battery problems last week in my 2001 BMW and they replaced the battery right away. Robin is my all-time favorite mechanic! The thing I like best is he is always quick to speak with me, even when I drop by unannounced. He manages to seamlessly oversee his guys as they work on cars that are already there, while at the same time engaging with new customers to triage their car's issues, order parts they need, and discuss the repair schedule all at the same time. It is wonderful (especially as the owner if two '99 vehicles) to know a mechanic who is fast, fair, knowledgeable, friendly AND a local, small business all at the same time. These guys are simply the best mechanics I've ever used. They know their business, explain things in layman's terms, and are unfailingly nice. Best of all, they are HONEST. I've asked them on several occasions about things that I suspected needed fixing, meaning I was primed to believe whatever they told me. After checking out what I mentioned, they explained, on each occasion, why it was not something that needed imminent attention. They also do not charge for diagnostic work when they don't do any repairs, even when it's clear they spent quite a bit of time with the car checking things out. And if that weren't enough, they actually got paint scrapings off my car, without my asking and without any charge, on top of not charging for the diagnostic eval for which I'd brought the car in. I am thrilled with my first experience with Robin! Here is why..I moved here recently and took my car in for a oil change and alignment. It was a straight forward project. I asked for the out the door price and he stuck to it. It was reasonable with no hidden fees. I like that. Here is the REAL kicker. I had a warning light for my fuel door that indicated it was open even when it wasn't. Very annoying. It wouldn't go away for months. Marin Toyota charged me $80 to DIAGNOSE the problem but was going to charge ANOTHER $200+ to replace the entire sensor! Robin took 5 min and saw that a 5 cent nut came off the sensor that held it in place. It was super easy to access and he didn't charge a thing! Wow! I wont be going back to Marin Toyota that is for sure! I learned my lesson. Those folks are crooked over and over again. Watch your wallet. Honest, caring, honest. I worked in the motor industry before emigrating from Scotland. Its always hard finding a trustworthy garage in terms on quality of work they do and them not trying to charge you for stuff that's not needed. I am wise to many 'tricks of the trade' and a couple of my repairs were opportunities for robin/ robins guys to try to scam me, but to my delight they were completely honest and even showed me the old part when I asked for it. I find the staff in general to be very helpful, accommodating, intelligent and I can most always get an appointment within the next day or so. Their rates are vastly more reasonable than a dealer would charge and the quality of work is superb. Super convenient southern Marin location makes it easy to drop off in the morning, uber to work, and pick up later in the day - no hassles. I came in from out of town (Orange County) with a problem with my van. I was on my way to a funeral and to see my daughter, son in law and grand kids. We just about made it there but developed problems with the engine missing because an ignition coil went bad. I was at Trader Joe's and found this Auto service just by chance. I have a car with 300000 miles which runs perfectly, thanx to Robin who installed rebuilt engine, tranny etc etc etc etc for very reasonable price and did it right the first time! Incredible experience. My prior mechanic retired and I was in the midst of an urgent crisis with a Prius hybrid system failure. Read positive Yelp reviews and headed over after calling Robin. They were kind, thoughtful, responsive and were able to sneak me in and run diagnostics. I assumed it was going to be time for a battery as the car is 10 years old with over 160,000 miles on the first. But - no - they alerted me to an invertor problem and did sufficient research to suggest that it may be a coverable defect - but that I needed to take the car to Toyota service. Initially Toyota San Rafael denied that the car was eligible for extended warranty - and had Robin not had the integrity and thoroughness to do enough research to help me be a good advocate, I'd be out a huge pocketful of cash. Robin's Auto has got a new customer and walking advertiser for life. These guys are skilled, generous, honest and go the extra mile - just because they seem to believe that's the right way to be. It is a very rare occasion when I bother to write a review. However, it is especially warranted here after so many years of excellent service I have received from Robin's Auto Service. Until recently, I had a number of old vehicles that for one reason or another needed repairs. In the old days I did all the repairs myself, in part, because I had more time on my hands and cars used to be simpler to repair. My previous experience with mechanics was not good. So, it was a godsend when I discovered Robin at his former shop in Larkspur some 10 years ago. Things got even better when he moved to his new location and started his own business. Though he owns the shop he is there virtually everyday and makes time to know and discuss the needs of your vehicle. He is exceptionally knowledgable and a pleasure to deal with. His prices are also exceptionally reasonable and at no time have I ever found his work over priced or unnecessary. I can not recommend this shop enough. Now that I have replaced my vehicles with new ones I will not be using Robin's auto service until my warranties expire but I look forward to seeking his services again when needed.
