I had a little bit of a disappointing time here. The place seemed very cool, and certain spots in the sitting area certainly are, but my experience just didn't live up to what I had expected. I did get to try their chicken parmigiana, tiramisu, and coffee. First, as I mentioned, the interior is quite cool, but we were sort of thrown to the very back in a corner where all I could admire was the wall. The table was also fairly shakey. So it wasn't the best start. I will say the waitress was amazing and very friendly, though. She checked in on us several times while we were still deciding our meals. Bread was great. Now, onto the food. The chicken parm was a letdown, in my opinion. Okay portion of chicken, quite a small portion of pasta that didn't have all that much flavor. Wasn't a huge fan. Now, the tiramisu thought....that was actually delicious. One of the best I've had in a while. Super creamy and served in a cute cup (it's more filling and larger than you might think initially). That was amazing, and paired well with the coffee (coffee was typical). All in all, amazing dessert, and okay mains. Good service. There are some beautiful spots to be seated, but we weren't seated there, so can't comment on that. read more

It's Italian! We were so shocked to visit, for our first time, to find we had frequented the building many times before, when it was a gorgeous B and B. It is still magnificent with a few updates. I would encourage you to visit just to see this spectacular layout, that includes a boutique hotel, fabulous bar, sitting rooms, outside eating area , AND , a cigar bar. For our first visit to Rocco's, we started with delicious cocktails , manhattan and espresso martini. My husband and I shared a Caesar salad, which was enough for two, and made with white anchovies. The bread with dipping oil was very good, with an added herb touch, I just can't say for sure, what it was. For entrees, my husband had pasta with red sauce and meatballs. The sauce was delicious and the meatball was huge and tasty ( ground pork, veal and ground meat). The pasta was cut into small pieces, unusual for Italian twirlers, but a little overcooked. What a beautiful home turned boutique hotel. This place was a little out of my husband's comfort zone but I'm glad he picked it. (he is not a fan of pasta) The bread was DELICIOUSLY crusty and soft. Don't let what it looks like scare you off. The pappardelle alla boscaiola (wild mushroom cream, oyster mushroom, crimini mushroom, artichoke and truffle herb oil) was to die for. Absolutely used the second helping of bread we got to scoop up all the leftover sauce. The wait staff were great so friendly and patient. We did not explore too much of the restaurant but the dining room was gorgeous. The chandelier when you first walk into the hotel is stunning. read more

We had a really fun night on our first visit to Rocco's and their 1864 Club. We started in the 1864 for the release of their new tapas menu and the cocktail they entered in the Three Rivers agave Cup competition. The tapas sampler was great and the staff in the lounge was friendly. The performer was a little piercingly loud with his vocals, but it was a cool bar and great start. We transitioned into Rocco's for dinner and the only availability was at the bar. That turned out great as all the bartenders were upbeat and attentive. The beans and greens were good and the entrees were great. The chicken was tender and cousin Tony's gnocchi was perfect (though be aware of the pepper). read more

My fiancé took me to Rocco's for Valentine's Day and it was FANTASTIC! It is super conveniently located and the valet was a nice touch! The vibe of the restaurant is super cool - like you are in a historic house (I actually think that might actually be what it is...!) We started off with the Arancini and it was phenomenal. So flavorful! We also got the complimentary bread and dipping oil which was also super good! For meals, my fiancé opted for the quail which came with mashed potatoes and mushrooms. He raved about it! I am a vegetarian so the menu was harder for me to find something, but our server was super accommodating when I asked for a dish without sausage! I forget exactly what it was called but it was AMAZING! Pretty sad that it's all gone - definitely will be getting it again! (It had a thick gnocchi like pasta, blistered tomatoes, ricotta cheese, white beans, spinach) While we were too stuffed for dessert, the neighboring table got some and it looked great! Absolutely loved this place. It's gorgeous inside with beautiful fixtures and old-world charm. Service was attentive and fast, and the cocktails were great. We started with the strawberry salad with gorgonzola... huge portion and an amazing champagne vinaigrette that was perfectly sweet and sharp. I had the gnocchi and devoured it; the vodka sauce was incredible. My partner ordered the Grandma's chicken cutlet, which was thin, lightly breaded, super moist, and full of flavor. It came with polenta that was honestly one of the best I've ever had savory with bacon or prosciutto and perfectly seasoned. For dessert, the cannolis were outstanding and the clear favorite (the tiramisu was good, but the cannolis stole the show). Overall, a fantastic spot for drinks and a great meal. Another Italian restaurant that stole my heart. The meatball app is a must! Every thing we had was amazing and I'll definitely be back to try their filet. I added a chicken cutlet to the bolognese because I was so excited I totally missed it came with a protein (meatball) so double the fun for me! Made an impromptu visit, so I ended up sitting at the bar and grabbing three apps (arancini, gigantic meatball and greens and beans.). The atmosphere is warm and cozy and has all of the beautiful/amazing northside mansion architecture(the restaurant is part of a boutique hotel). The standout app was the cheese filled meatball with a very nice marinara. The arancini was not my personal favorite flavor profile but they were cooked perfectly. Great crunch on the outside and soft and pillowy inside. After dinner the cigar bar is a must see even if you don't enjoy cigars. There's a separate bar in the room as well. In the end I love the atmosphere and will be going back to try some of the main dishes. read more

The food here was good Italian. The vodka sauce was excellent with the gnocchi. My biggest downfalls were this place was overpriced and portions very small. We were charged for bread service, and the bread with the carne cruda was so hard we were eating it without. The portions were incredibly small for the price. The ambiance is amazing it is an old mansion, the food and service were also great! Husband had the chicken Milanese and I had the Rocco's pasta it was delicious. My only complaint is we asked for butter for the bread and it was a $3 up charge and husband exchanged polenta for the broccoli and another $3 up-charge. Both of these seemed excessive. Also they should play only Italian music as it sets the stage better than just playing light rock. Minor adjustments that wouldn't stop us from recommending it or returning to the restaurant. Also, it has lovely gardens and you can eat out there too. All in all it was a very nice evening with delicious food! read more

Best tiramasu I have ever had! Everything was first class, from salad to pasta. Nice old house in historic neighborhood.

Although this is one of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh I had one of the worst experiences ever recently. It was hot outside. 95. So I get it. However it was 97 in the restaurant. It was so miserable that 3 people in our group couldn't even eat their meals. And all of the staff knew that it was unbearable inside. Not an apology. Not a sorry. Not a free dessert. Nothing. This went from our favorite restaurant to we won't be back anytime soon in the summer. read more

Rocco's opened the end of July and what a nice addition to the North Shore. The restaurant is such a pleasant and beautiful place. The food is nicely plated and has varied tastes to ensure that there is something for everyone. Service is friendly, prompt, and performed as would be expected by such a fine looking establishment. We recently hosted a private party in their Villagio event venue/cigar bar. it was very short-staffed with no waitresses passing the food as we had been assured there would be--and had paid for. There were only 2 bartenders, one very inexperienced, who had to do it all so the food was not handled properly (ran out of plates, buffet table not cleaned up, one item not served until party was almost over etc.) and our guests had to wait for drinks since they were so overwhelmed. Owners made excuses and one was very rude to me. We liked the venue and neighborhood but do not recommend. read more

Our reservation was made for 7:15 PM, and when we showed up we were seated immediately. Our table was tucked into the wall and so close to another table that the wait staff continually bumped wither my husband or the other table's patron when they walked through. We ordered the wine and cheese flight. It was amazing; no complaints. The wine was advertised at 3 2-oz. pours, and they looked a little low, but it was enough. The server asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. Being naive, I thought still meant tap. My error, as we bought a $7 bottle of water without knowing it. I love Pittsburgh tap water and prefer it. I felt the server should have offered the "free" water. In a place like this, we were prepared to spend, but not to be tricked into it. The menu offers a plate of complimentary bread with dinner, but we were served dinner and then my husband asked for it. The server explained you have to ask for it (it's not offered when you order). I am not trying to be cheap but it felt like the restaurant was! My husband said his gnocchi was the best he ever had. I ordered the pasta and meatball. My meatball was underdone in the middle, and the pasta was stuck together in clumps, like it was all cooked together and a bit gummy. Definitely not the best I've ever had. Service was not very good - we were checked on twice in the hour we spent there. Once we were ready to go, we ordered a tiramisu to go. We started to eat it no more than an hour after leaving the restaurant. The cookies in it were still crispy and not soft as they are supposed to be in a tiramisu. Was the cooking/preparation of it rushed? I have had similar or better dinners in many other places. This one cost about twice those dinners' prices, at $120 for two. Again, we were prepared to spend but not for a mediocre experience. read more

Beautiful and intimate dining experience! The staff were all very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious! We started with the Bomba Di Arancini, which was so creamy on the inside and packed a little heat. I had the Penne Pesto Genovese and my husband had the Four Cheese Sacchetti. They were both prepared to perfection. The shrimp were enormous! We finished with the Afogado and Tiramisu. We both agreed the Tiramisu was the best we had ever had. We also visited the cigar bar, which was very cool and had some amazing pieces of furniture (we aren't smokers). We will definitely go back again! read more

From the moment we walked in, we felt uncomfortable being looked up and down, like we were being judged based on how we were dressed. They tried to seat us at the bar, and when we asked for a table, it felt like an issue. A comment about a "dress code" followed, which honestly felt unnecessary. The food was a letdown. The filet mignon was overcooked and heavily crusted, not at all how I ordered it. For a place that tries to come off as upscale, the food didn't match the attitude. The only highlight was our waitress, she was great. Overall, maybe focus more on the quality of the food and less on trying to fit into a specific aesthetic. read more

We had a lovely dinner with friends at Rocco's. The table started with mussels and greens and beans; both were delish. For my entree, I personally had the gnocchi in vodka sauce. I do have to say I am a little opinionated about gnocchi and will describe these as very good. The vodka sauce was also delicious. There were 7 people in our party. We all had different meals and we all enjoyed the food. The waitress did an excellent job. Jess was hosting and made us feel welcome and gave us a tour of the whole property. The atmosphere is special and classic for the Northside of Pittsburgh. The original molding, woodwork and stained glass is gorgeous. The Bird and I had a wonderful evening at Rocco's on the North Side. We sat on the quaint patio -- likely quieter than the main dining room when we left -- and loved the relaxed vibe. I started with an Old Fashioned which was well prepared. I had the house salad, and The Bird had the strawberry walnut salad; both were fresh and flavorful. We split Cousin Tony's Gnocchi in Vodka Sauce and the Veal Parmigiana. I make my own gnocchi from my grandmother's recipe, so I'm a stickler -- but these were the closest I've ever had in a restaurant! Nice size and perfectly sauced. The veal was tender and delicious, though the portion could've been a bit larger. Our server (possibly Janell) was fantastic, service was top-notch, and valet parking ($12) made things easy. We also checked out the cigar lounge off the patio -- classy and comfortable. Met one of the owners, Alex, who was genuinely welcoming. We'll definitely be back. read more

Totally loved the atmosphere, the service and the food! The restaurant has a special vibe and the china is so elegant reminding me of eating at grandma's house. Somehow was taken down. We came here for our anniversary and left very disappointed. While the ambience was nice, the service and food did not live up to expectations. Our server repeatedly misunderstood orders, even confusing chicken parmesan with veal. The veal medallions ($38) arrived lukewarm and tasted pre-cooked, while the chicken parmesan was just average. The drink menu was also underwhelming. A cocktail I ordered was so poorly made I had to send it back and settle for a beer. For a restaurant with a dress code, the limited beer selection (Yuengling, Duquesne Pilsner, IC Light) felt lacking. Small details, like not receiving a steak knife for meat dishes, added to the disappointment. Overall, the atmosphere was pleasant, but the service and food did not justify the high prices. I was so excited to try this restaurant since it opened! The night finally came and what a disappointment. We were seated outside on a rainy and cold evening in their covered patio which is actually a walkway between their different buildings and overlooks the inside of a working kitchen. Needless to say it was not the ideal setting with waitstaff rushing past us and doors slamming closed every few minutes. In addition to no outdoor heaters working where we were seated. When I asked why we were seated outside and if we could eat inside I was told no and the dining room was booked even though I made a reservation well in advance. Unfortunately I cannot speak of the food as after sitting for a bit we decided that we would not be able to enjoy our dinner and left. Proceed with caution- ensure you request a seat in the dining room when making your reservations! We didn't know that was something you had to do. read more
