Big Jim's is a Pittsburgh institution. It's been 20 years or so since my last visit to Big Jim's. My family was headed towards town around dinner time and decided to take advantage of the opportunity and stop by. We arrived around 4:30 on a Friday. We were able to get a parking spot around the back. We were quickly seated and beat the dinner rush by a few minutes. First off, our waitress couldn't have been sweeter. Super friendly and attentive. Very kind, especially to my youngest son. My wife had a small fish sandwich, my oldest son had the baked ziti, my youngest son had chicken parm, and I had gnocchi with meat sauce. Portions were large and tasty. Three of us had cups of wedding soup. Everyone was stuffed and enjoyed their meal. I would highly recommend and will not have a 20 year gap in visits to Big Jim's (in the run). read more

A friend told us how good Big Jim's was and we are so glad we decided to go try it. We were warmly greeted when we entered. The waitress was also very nice and accommodating the entire time. A man was also very helpful and brought us things we may need. I really enjoyed the super meaty and delicious meatballs on my meatball hoagie. The Marinara was really good. My husband's Italian and absolutely loved the veal cutlet sandwich. It was huge, crunchy and tasty. It made him nostalgic for the veal cutlets his grandmother used to make. The Fresh-cut Fries were good but weren't seasoned well enough. I also wish they were crunchier. We saw a man order the Stromboli and it was ginormous but looked delicious. He was a big guy and only ate about 25% of it. Got my mom a corned beef sandwich and she said it one of the best she had ever had. We're Irish and she loves them. We were at a nearby brewery and decided to see what restaurants were nearby and Big Jim's was #1. We checked out the menu and were on our way to a local gem! Stepping inside felt a little bit like stepping back in time in the best way possible. There's lots of Pittsburgh collectibles around the walls and bar area. We had no idea this place was so famous and consider it a happy accident to have found it. We had excellent service and delicious food. Our server felt badly that we had to wait so long (we didn't feel it'd been too long) and she comped our onion rings and beer. I had the gourmet grilled chicken sandwich which was excellent. And my boyfriend had of the largest Italian hoagies he'd ever seen. Portions are huge. Prices are great and the taste is the best! We can't wait to go back and are already strategizing what we will order there and what we will order to take home! I've wanted to try this place for a few years now but never seemed to have an opportunity. So yesterday I was heading in a completely different direction when I decided to turn around and drive another hour and finally give it a shot. I'd never make that trip again, but if I happened to be in the neighborhood I might stop by. It's a real dive bar in a shady neighborhood the place was exactly what I expected, our sandwiches were huge and the ingredients were very tasty, I had a Turkey Reuben , and the meat was fresh roasted turkey and lots of it, my friend had a corned beef Reuben. They're were very good and we both had half to take home for dinner. Their staff were very friendly, attentive, and helpful. If you are super hungry, you are in luck at Big Jim's! The portions are ginormous, especially the calzones! I was with 12 friends and everyone was happy with the food, portion size, and service. We were surprised at how crowded it was at 1:30 in the afternoon...but, with the state of the economy, people are happy to get so much more for their food money. For the restaurant to be so crowded that they could not fit one more person in on a Wednesday afternoon, says a lot about this neighborhood secret. Even the bar area was crowded with locals, and it reminded me of the "Cheers" bar. All patrons that I saw in the restaurant had a to-go box. I don't know how they do it! read more

I went to Big Jim's with my brother and a friend after running the Pittsburgh Great Race. I was very hungry. We knew the restaurant had hearty dishes. I ordered the cheeseburger with Swiss cheese, with the burger cooked medium rare. It came back perfect, served with tomato, onions and lettuce, with a dill pickle on the side. The server, Toni, was very accommodating. My friend had a strange request for her Reuben sandwich order. She doesn't eat meat, so she asked if she could give her corned beef to me and just have her sandwich include sauerkraut and cheese. "No problem," said Toni. However, when the order was served, the cheese came on top of the corned beef, and my friend's sandwich had no cheese...just sauerkraut. The cook had gotten the special request wrong. The bread was a hearty, thick Russian rye. Toni agreed to have the sandwich sent back for cheese to be added. And there would be no extra charge for the cheese already on the corned beef. My brother requested extra sauce for his eggplant Parmesan. No problem! The restaurant is very sports-oriented. Games in the TV, and the servers were wearing Steelers-related clothes. The food here is amazing! Big, delicious portions. We had Reubens, fries with gravy, and open roast beef smothered in gravy and fries. They use Mancini bread- big flavorful slices, large amounts of tender, seasoned corned beef, with dressing on the side. The fries are submerged when cooked in some type of oil which brings every bite more delight to your tastebuds than ever before. The flavorsome bread on the roast beef is toasted, which is a nice touch, and compliments the thinly sliced tasty meat. The gravy is just like your grandma's- full of rich flavor. Always a treat. Food is always amazing no matter what you order. This place is busy so offer grace because those servers are RUNNING! If you want a real Pittsburgh dinning experience, this is it. Great dinner the other night in this hole in the wall in Garfield. We popped in last Friday around 6pm, and the place was packed to the gills! Not even a couple seats at the bar. We didn't have to wait long for a 2-top. The hostess was really welcoming and entertaining while we waited. It was clear the place has a sizable regular crowd. Everyone knew everyone, it seemed. The atmosphere is very "old Pittsburgh" - energetic and almost like being in someone's old, paneled living room. A server took our order pretty quickly. The beer selection was quite varied (happily there was a hazy IPA!). Beer seemed a popular pick judging by all the tables and bar top around us. We waited a long time for our food, but I don't think that's usual. Our extremely apologetic server explained that the kitchen had been overwhelmed by 3 huge, unexpected parties. We were fine. The food was really good. My husband had their Reuben which he said was quite flavorful. He loved the Thousand Island dressing. My Alfredo pasta was crazy rich and dotted with roasted broccoli (you can have it plain, with broccoli &/or chicken). The surprising standout of the meal, though, was our basket of fries! I mean, they were the real deal - fresh, some skin on, and super tasty. The portions are large at this place - so come hungry! I took home 1/2 my meal. A nice evening. Saw this place on Diners Drive in and Dives and figured it would be a must go to spot. The staff was definitely very friendly and you definitely get the old bar restaurant vibe the second you walk in. Pretty decent menu. I didn't get anything that was tried in the show, but I got the hot sausage sandwich. I wasn't overly thrilled piece of sausage on a large piece of bread that was toasted and pretty dry a lot more bread than there was sausage. read more

Ordered 2 "oven baked" italian hoagies that were cooked in the microwave instead of the oven. Terrible undercooked meats yuk. The waitress was good however and tried to make it up to us which was appreciated but inadequate. I've gone back and forth on whether to leave a negative review for a couple weeks now. I give the waitress 9 stars out of ten but the food gets a 3 I guess, out of ten. Not good, so disappointing we haven't gone back and am not planning to. Classic Pittsburgh joint, if you haven't been here at least once and have lived in this city for more than a year, you're dropping the ball/puck/etc. Proprietor is a great dude, staff super friendly, and they try and get you to a table promptly, even if the place is packed. Food...it's pretty BIG, sometimes great (salads, sandwiches), sometimes good (pasta, calzones, parmigiana), never below that...that's what you're looking for, right? Not only once, but twice , in one week!!First night we were pleasantly surprised with pastas. Hubby had spaghetti and meatballs. Now, I'm Italian, and I have made meatballs for years. Big Jim's were very good. I had the gnocchi and marinara sauce. I prefer my gnocchi a little lighter, but I absolutely loved the sauce. I digress, because I forgot to mention the wedding soup, absolutely delicious and quite filling. And, last , but not least, the side salad. A very nice salad, but the Italian dressing was perfect, worth dipping your Italian bread in! Well, I saw that they have deep fried clam strips on the menu, and we both love them. But you know, you can't be too sure about the deep fry oil, or breading. Let me tell you, the coating was light , not like it sat in fish oil. The clam strips were quite meaty. I can't wait to try again. Now for the coup de gras' , I ordered a manhattan with Maker's Mark. My glass was double the size of most places. The price was definitely right. And it was very good . We stopped here for the first time after an event at the convention center. We had a wonderful experience! It might not look like much from the outside but this place is a true gem. There's a small dinning area within the massive bar along with a separate section just for dining. It has a homey feel. We were greeted and seated right away. All of the employees were friendly and helpful. This place definitely has character and charm. True yinzer experience! The menu is fantastic with tons of great options to select from. We started out with the zucchini with marinara. It was really good nice and crispy. For my entree I ordered the open faced roast beef sandwich. Whenever it was served I couldn't help but say WOW because it was absolutely massive! It could easily feed two people if not more. All of the food that we ordered was delicious, huge portions and reasonably priced. I really can't say enough good things about this place truly. Do yourself a favor and give it a try! read more

Great spot!! Loved the atmosphere and the vibe of this spot. Stopped in during lent so am really looking forward to going back and trying the full regular menu The fish sandwich was good though and so was the broiled option. We also got mozzarella sticks and they were perfect. The mac n cheese tasted like Stouffers which I really didn't like, they ran out of haluski, and the menu said our food came with coleslaw but we weren't given any. So I did have to dock a star. Hopefully next time it'll be perfect. We still enjoyed our food, the cold beers, and the great company read more

Go on an empty stomach. Was here in Pitt to drop off some stuff for our daughter attending school and saw this place was about 10 minutes from our hotel. Read the reviews and decided to give it a go. First off, DO NOT HAVE TO PAY TO PARK!!! On street parking. Place is the epitome of a dive bar. Don't let that fool you. The food is fresh, the portions are HUGE, and the service was attentive. My glass never went dry. Wife got the Italian sub and my daughter and I split a meatball sub. Big portions. The only things that brought it down to 4 stars were: The bread. Not sure if it's the kind of bread or how it was toasted or a combination of both, but it was so "crispy" that it could scratch the inside of your mouth when you bit into it. Almost too much of a crunch to it. Not burnt at all, don't get the wrong idea.... The meatballs got a little dry. There were 5 good size (almost tennis ball size) in the sub, but could have used more sauce. I will say that a big positive on the bread is that the hoagies didn't get soggy. With the portion of meat and stuff, it's almost like you should wait a bit and let the bread get a bit soggy before you dive in. Maybe we just did it wrong We did see a table next to us get some calzones and OMFG this here were soooooooo big. Three of us left with leftovers for under $50. I really like this place- I've been here twice with my family when we've been in town for a work conference. The kids meals are a fantastic deal to feed hungry kids, with large portions. The fries my boys didn't eat were super tasty! My daughter got the buffalo chicken hoagie, and it was enormous and delicious. The chicken parm hoagie was also tasty on wonderful bread. I liked our servers, they tag teamed our table and took good care of us. It's definitely got a diner-like set up, but I love that about it. read more
