I've been here twice now. I like that it's table service and you start with chips and a very addicting salsa. The first time I got a carne asada taco and a shrimp taco and both were so delicious! They are a bit small but they make up for that in quality. An average person should order 3 if that's all you're having. My friend got half a salad and it was ginormous so there's that. She says it was tasty and would get it again. 2nd visit I got a carne asada burrito and added rice to the inside. Best value! I need to try the drinks still! The place is beautiful. I've never left a Yelp review before. I love Rocio's and Rocio herself is an absolute gem! I went out of my way to support this place during Covid because I love it so much. However recently my neighborhood Mexican restaurant has started to go down the tubes. The front of the house staff is absolutely terrible. It's almost as if they are trying to tank this wonderful establishment. The last few times in, I left feeling like it was a problem that I was there to begin with. This is a great place to get some amazing food and tasty spicy margaritas. Plenty of outdoor seating with plenty of distancing to keep everyone safe. The salsa and queso are unique and to die for. Hot homemade tortilla chips were continually refilled while we waited for our food. Shout out to our server Alec, who was so attentive and kind. We could hear the smile behind his mask as he chatted with us and made us feel warm and welcome. The chimichanga was big enough for two, I left with a full belly. I want to like this place. My friends do. It's in our neighborhood. They support neighborhood schools. But as a vegetarian I am underwhelmed. One vegetable filling of the day that can go in taco/burrito/enchilada. So if I want to share two entrees, it's basically the same thing. My kids just wanted a bean/cheese/rice taco and they charged me $5! Per taco. (It's $4 for a meat taco). That felt ridiculous. Also, the side salad that came with the tacos for my kids had jalapeños in it. And since the salsa and picked carrots were spicy, I ordered guacamole for my kids to dip their chips in, and that was spicy too. With a cheaper and better variety of vegetarian tacos at Stella taco and dangerous margaritas and more kid friendly veg options at por que no, this place is not for us. Sorry! read more

This place was down the street from a house we were housesitting at for the week. My son and I were the first ones in for the day. It came highly recommended. The staff was super nice and helpful. They were attentive even when it got busier inside. I ordered two tacos: pescado and pollo asado. My son ordered the potato rolled tacos. We also got guacamole, which was cheaper than most places these days. We got just as much, and it was as good as anywhere else that charges $11 for the same thing. The prices were great! I believe both our meals and guacamole were less than $15ish total. The food was delicious! The tacos were so stuffed full that is was hard to fold, but nobody should ever complain about a too-stuffed taco!! My son was mad that we didn't return the week that we were there. This was my second visit to Rocio, the first one after / during the pandemic. I meditated over writing a fair review because I am aware on how hard this crisis has been for restaurant industry. Food is ok and presentation was great as well as the guacamole and salsa were delicious. However bad and rude service is unacceptable by any standard. I was a server myself so I know very well how ungrateful the job might feel be at times but a job is a job and it needs to be honored regardless. I went there last Tuesday during my late lunch break, which I assume it might be the reason the server was rude since the first minute. There was one table of 2 already paying so I was the only table in the sidewalk cafe ( which is great btw ). I informed the server that I was vegan/vegetarian and that I would like to know about what options they had as I was looking at the menu found out they had a vegetables burrito so I asked if it was with same veggies as Fajitas, she replied that it wasn't pepper and onions but with seasonal veggies which I asked which veggies? Server replied "Brussels sprouts". I guess she did not like that I said a snarky but friendly comment on how I wouldn't think that the flavor profile of Brussels sprouts didn't make sense to me in a burrito, but she offered vegan cheese which was nice. However I noticed the irritation fuming from the server but I was busy, hungry and honestly had a really had a long day too to be on the receiving end of this bad behavior ( even behind the mask ). She left and a minute later I decided what to order. Tried waving at her through the window and then tap the window as she didn't see me or notice. ( I was essentially her only table at that point my lunch break is running out of time ) Server comes takes my order, does not follow up on the vegan cheese at all, I ordered sparkling water. Go to the washroom came back to the table there is a plastic glass full of ice and seltzer water, not what I ordered but hey..fortunately the other server/bartender comes / checks on me gets me a bottle of sparking water. The other server brings the food to the table which took few minutes and it was good. The mentioned server doesn't come once to the table to check on the food or me. I had to wave through the window to get her attention and the check once again. I am sorry but I am not sure if the server was biased because of my race, my appearance, my accent or whatever I really rub her off it wasn't a pleasant experience. If the server doesn't like her job, get a more suitable job for yourself than costumer service but don't offer a terrible experience to costumers because you are having a bad day. Lousy and rude server. Might come back but will request a different server as I know it is not the intention of the management to ruin costumers meals and drinks. read more

Great surprise! Chose east side randomly on the map and took a chance. Wife had the braised beef tamales, I had chicken enchilada and steak taco. All were fantastic! The salsa was super tasty and the house margarita was the perfect compliment. You should definitely give them a chance if you're in the neighborhood. read more

We've been coming to this restaurant for years, probably since shortly after they opened, and I have always had a positive experience. Last night, I brought my family who were visiting from out of town, to have a casual, easy Mexican meal with margaritas. Unfortunately, the service was poor, the drinks took forever and were not as described, and the food was mediocre at best and in some cases inedible. Besides the pace and timing of the service being way off (hot appetizers first, guacamole 5 mins later and after asking twice, and margaritas another 10 mins after that), it was nearly impossible to flag down a server during the meal. The "ranch water" (typically tequila, soda and lots of fresh squeezed lime juice) was a pint glass of tequila and soda... the a la carte tacos were sloppy and served on undercooked flour tortillas, when they were supposed to be corn (I cannot eat gluten and I had to flag someone down to confirm that they were indeed corn- I was assured they were, but knew shortly after dinner concluded that my suspicions were confirmed). Service was inattentive and indifferent. This spot is in my neighborhood and I remember it fondly as a family friendly spot with a great happy hour. I live a few houses down from here so I've really wanted to find something good here. We ordered the ground beef hard shell tacos, al pastor soft tacos, and the pork burrito. The pastor was good, but I don't really like it with their guacamole sauce, it's better with just the meat. The ground beed hard shell tacos were bad. They had almost no flavor and tasted like overcooked sloppy joe's. Just a bad dish. My girlfriend got the carnitas burrito and didn't enjoy it that much. The beverages the bartender made were fantastic - lime aid and some strawberry concoction, but are $4 with no refills, so know that beforehand. Overall it was a bit overpriced and bland. read more

Holy. Hell. I've never been much for Mexican food. I mean, I eat as many take out burritos as any other self respecting millennial but I never really felt elevated by the experience, I guess. Then I had a simple taco at Rocio's. I'm still recovering from the shock. This taco was dead simple, ground beef, fried corn tortilla, some lettuce. You know, a taco. But this taco was different, this taco was a symphony of subtle flavor, texture and mouth feel. This taco, in all it's unassuming, workaday splendor, was the best thing I've eaten all year. The flakiness of the tortilla, the soft, warm undertones of umami that emanated from the ground beef, the perfect, cool release of these heavier flavors by the greens and the tomato. It was sublime, it was understated, it was - delightful. Get thee to Rocio's, NOW. Get the taco. Ponce's taco. Get 5 of them. Don't church it up with a bunch of extras. This taco, in this unassuming Mexican joint, is one of the universes rare perfect expressions of balance and goodness. My frame of reference for Mexican food has been spent mainly down in Texas for a period of over 13 years. Tex Mex is some incredible food that is not overly spicy but has some good hot sauces to go with it. There were many hole-in-the-wall spots that I enjoyed finding and were usually better than some of the bigger chains in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Up here in Portland, I have found several hole-in-the-wall spots that I enjoy some good home cooking Mexican food. Rocio's is different because it is a style of Mexican food that I am unaccustomed to, California Mexican. Essentially, the same food but as with a burrito it is covered in either red or green enchilada sauce. They call the style "wet". The burrito I had was also different because it was mainly just the meat and guacamole. In the Tex Mex style, there would also be veggies such as rice and beans, tomatoes and onions. This burrito was huge and the carnitas were incredible. Forget ever eating a Chipotle burrito again this place will ruin you for anything else. After riding in a rainstorm on a Saturday, I made it over to Rocio's and met my brother there for lunch. It was pretty quiet being that I think we were the only customers in the place other than a couple of people at the bar and we ordered a couple of Negra Modelos and chips and salsa were brought over to our table. It's a great menu with tacos, stews, burritos and mole. I learned of this place from friends of mine who live up here and are originally from San Diego. Rocio's has a sister restaurant down there called Ponce's and it's been around for a long time. The food is a good sign that they know what they are doing. As stated above, we both ordered burritos and we each got sides of rice and beans. The beans were not overly creamy and had a beautiful smokey taste to them. Just perfect. I got the carnitas and my brother got adobado, which was beef in a red sauce sweetened with pineapple. Both were huge and both were very very good. I can't say enough good things about this place, but if you haven't been, then you need to ASAP. Its that good. Enjoy Rocio's soon. read more

Loved it! I am from California, and I am tired of all the bad rice and bean fillers in the burritos here. Welcome to San Diegan style - meat, pico, guac. Did I mention loads of meat? And wet with the best verde sauce I have ever had. Chips and salsa complimentary when so many places nowadays charge for them. Very cute space. Industrial, but lit with green lights, large square bar and lots of tequila to choose from. I will spare you the "I'm from SoCal and I know what Mexican food taste like" smack. I really liked this restaurant and appreciate the kindness of the owner and staff. Let's break it down; House made roasted tomato table salsa is by far the BEST I've tasted at a restaurant in Portland. This alone will bring me back. The Flan, equally as great as the above Ok, here is where it was less than perfect, the Carne Asada was over salted for my taste. The quality of the meat and the preparation as far as the cut size and the CHAR on the steak was perfect. But, when it's over salted, it masks the taste of the meat. Also, the flour tortilla was a little too big for the amount of filling, this causes the ends of the burrito to be over folded and makes it hard to cut with just a fork, I had to use a knife. (this should never happen) I only had the guacamole on the last two bites. Yes, I had it with the red and green sauce on top w/cheese Thinking Out Loud; I would order this and say, light on the salt and extra guacamole with the red or green sauce on the inside as well as the outside. This would bring the cost up, but the quality of my eating experience would rise too. I would think.. The Frijoles and Arroz were a little on the dry side, especially the rice. Service was great ! The owner was very sweet, engaging, welcoming and funny. Her staff is warm and professional. All and All, I really enjoyed myself and my friends did as well. We kept it simple & had the fish taco, enchiladas etc. All good. The chicken tortilla soup was wonderful. I would do the soup over & over. The menu is all ala cart so you'll need to order & pay for the side dishes separately. The sides do come in 1/2 orders so mix it up. The average rating for this place is 4 stars, I think, because of the ala cart ordering which can translate to a higher price. I like it is better this way as I can order the (lower) amount of food that I want because I think portion sizes in the US are generally to big. read more

Rocios responded to my review at the time, and though I didn't go back, it was a nice gesture. Last night, I was craving a burrito, and since rocios is just down the street, I decided to go for round two. Happy to say It was delicious. This burrito was STUFFED with meat and guacamole. I added the enchilada sauce and cheese and it was well worth it. The enchilada sauce seriously kicks ass. This time I'm giving 5 stars and I think they deserve it. I was bummed to have written such a bad review. I have hundreds of check ins all over town, and the few review I've written have all been positive. I couldn't believe that he had just said that unprovoked so I said, "we can go somewhere else" and he said "Good. Go then". I told him he didn't have to be an ass. I understand being stressed out about a large party. A simple, "I'm not able to seat you all without a reservation in my 24 empty seats" would have been sufficient. This was my third visit. We had a party of 6 and came here for lunch including the ping pong reviewer below me. Staff was super nice, put some tables together in the middle of the room closer to the amazing looking bar (instead of seating us in the corner that actually was meant for bigger groups like us). Besides the free nachos, I've ordered 3 tacos, Carne Asada, Pollo Asado and Carnitas. All three were bomb, in particular the Carnitas. This could be easily the best Carnitas I ever got here in PDX. I'm one of those people that starts planning what I'm going to eat for dinner before I'm even out of bed in the morning. Not because I'm so organized, but because I love to eat. That being said, when I'm choosing a place to go grab some food, my top concern is picking a place that has a comfortable environment & a staff with a good attitude. We all know those factors can seriously alter your meal! Rocio's offers all three. You get to enjoy fantastic food (there's something for everyone's diet) in a comfortably buzzing sit down restaurant served by enthusiastic, genuine staff. There's often whole families, babies, dogs on the patio. Other nights the bar is packed with people that have all become best friends over bottomless chips & flawless margs. I lived in this neighborhood for years, and many of the patrons are also locals that come several times a week. But anyone can tell you, we don't stop coming when we move away!! I use to frequent Rocio's at least once a week. They are within walking distance to me. Service has always been great, the food was good, vegan options which I appreciate, and the drinks always had a good amount of alcohol in them, a little pricey but always great. Cut to now. I almost never go in anymore because 75% of the time I'm disappointed. Example: last night a friend and I came in for dinner. We sat at the bar and I ordered a vegan burrito bowl and she got soup and a side of queso. I said twice I wanted the burrito vegan. It came out with meat in it. I told him he seemed mildly apologetic. Her food comes out and now she's eating alone. Though not for long because her soup was so salty she couldn't eat more than a few bites. I asked for it to go because I didn't want my friend to have to wait any longer. I got home and opened it and it was drowning in enchilada sauce which I asked for a tiny bit. Which they also charged 1.00 for. Like this bowl is already 12.00. It had no veggies except what looked like cabbage slaw. When I've ordered it in the past it's always whatever veggie was seasonal which I love. Because it's different every time. Brussels sprouts, carrots, beets, etc. Not this time. Drowning in sauce I gave up after a few bites. I'm not sure what's different. If the management had changed or what. Several of my friends use to love Rocio's and all of them have stopped coming in the last year. We spent 50.00 on the smallest glass of wine, super salty soup, decent queso, and a 13.00 disaster bowl. I tried to email them but there is not one listed on their website. Which is a bummer and shows maybe they don't want input or feedback. I really did love it and it's not nearly what it use to be and that's too bad. After my friend called them they did refund my meal and apologize. But the fact remains the food is not as good as it use to be. Just ate at Rocio's tonight and I'm very impressed. The entire experience was great. We were seated quickly, our server was speedy and attentive and the place is clean with nice atmosphere. The place is hopping! Food was delicious with generous portions. For appetizers we ordered the guacamole and salsa fresca (pico de gallo). The chips and salsa are free with dinner. Chips were thin, warm, salty and a little oily --perfect. They tasted great and dipped well. For dinner my wife and I both had the burrito ultimo and it was big, stuffed with guacamole, rice and beans. We topped them with enchilada sauce both red and green. The red is spicier and has better flavor but the green isn't bad either. I also had a side of rice and beans and a soft chicken taco. I totally suggest getting a side of rice and beans so you can dip them with your chips. It was really good and I'm stuffed to the brim writing this. I probably won't need to eat for a week now.
