I had a terrible experience with Dave yesterday. I was pretty sure a rat had chewed through the wires in my car. The ABS light came on, the car wouldn't start, and then it would. When I checked under the hood, I saw rat droppings on the battery and signs of nesting around the engine. The car kept turning off while I was driving and would restart randomly. I explained this to Dave, and he suggested I go through insurance. My deductible seemed like it may be higher than what I'd pay out of pocket, so I preferred to avoid it. Dave assured me that going through insurance was just to have a case open before checking the car and if the damage didn't add up to the deductible, we could work together outside the insurance. He agreed to check the car first. When I asked if the initial inspection was free, he gave me a vague answer but basically said yes. This was the first red flag I overlooked. I appreciated how much time he spent explaining insurance to me, and I felt comfortable with his demeanor initially. But when I got to the shop, he was completely different. He asked "What are we doing here?..." I reminded him that we just spoke on the phone and he stared at me. I asked if he remembered and he just said "yes." so I started to re-explain the issue. He interrupted me and just said "so what are we diagnosing?" I said I was confused. He said condescendingly, "If that car doesn't stall when I drive it in the next ten minutes, there's nothing here for us to do, so I need you to tell me what we're diagnosing." We had already talked about all of this on the phone. Me: "That sounds like the question I have for you. I believe a rat chewed through my wires and my car keeps turning off and on while I'm driving it. Isn't that what we're diagnosing?" He said, "See, this is what I explained. Just like we talked about..." and listed important things that we never talked about. He spoke to me in this weird way, like a teacher quizzing a student... and then he would look at me shrug and say "that's what I'm asking you". Me: "I don't understand. You're asking me questions that you're supposed to find the answers to. I'm not the mechanic...all I can tell you is what's wrong with my car and ask for your help..." I finally asked if this process would be different if insurance was not a part of this. He diverted.. "I'll give you 10 to 15 minutes to look under the hood of your car and if I can't see anything, then what are we gonna do?" Me: "I don't know...what are we going to do? " Him: "Well, we charge for our time here." (At this point, I'm so annoyed. Just tell me how much you charge. I don't expect free labor.) Me: "Please just tell me how much you charge." He finally told me the rates. I said... "OK well I guess let's start with driving the car and see if it happens in the next 10 minutes"... as he had offered. He said that he needed to finish his phone call that had been on hold the entire time we had been talking. In the time that I left to update my boyfriend out front, Dave looked under the hood of the car without me, which I would've liked to have been present for. He said he didn't see anything... Not surprising if you took a minute and a half to look under the same hood that I looked under, we both have eyes. Him: "OK we will look the car over tomorrow when insurance gets here. You can leave the keys." Me: "Are we gonna drive the car around now before I send insurance over here?" Him: "I don't see any reason to drive the car around until they're here". That was crazy. He had just said something totally different. I asked him two questions about the fees that he would charge me and insurance, and he started responding with, "You're overthinking this". I said "You just told me that you don't know what to diagnose in my car, and that the problem I have very likely won't occur while insurance is here with you tomorrow. And if that problem doesn't occur while they're here, then I don't know if they will cover anything at which point you might start charging me. These are really basic questions. I don't understand what will happen and I want to know what my options are." Then his whole tone changed and he went to hand the keys back to me while he said "If this is like a money thing, I don't really want to have anything to do with it..." Me: "What are you talking about? I'm literally just asking you for clarity." And he honestly said with a smile, "Well you're not gonna get any of that from me"... That was the most clear statement he could have given me and I was grateful to leave. He was defensive, rude, and unclear on purpose. If he had been honest and straightforward, I would've been happy to pay for his services. I just wanted clear options and an honest evaluation. If a business person makes you feel bad for asking questions about services or the charges, just leave. I truly hope one day he realizes he could earn just as much or more, by being honest and clear with customers. read more

Regardless of any negative reviews, (I search the negatives first to find consistencies ) I went to Longs Automotive after speaking to Dave on the phone. I brought a list of repairs for them to do. Dave was highly practical and told me straight up that they didn't have time to address my list but would happily diagnose and fix the immediate issues to get me back to work. He was straight up with expectations. That may have put off many other people, but being a self employed builder I knew exactly where he was coming from. They had me up and running by the end of the day Dave charged me a very reasonable price ( less than the mechanic, who shall not be named, who made my car worse! ) perhaps because I respected Dave's goal , time restraints and was not put off by his practicality Dave understood that I am a working man who needed to get back to work. Brought my car in for a broken lug nut bolt that happened as my husband was patching my tire. Dropped off about 2 hours to closing and they said likely pick up next day. Pleasantly surprised to get a call about an hour later that they managed to get the piece and fix it! Docking 1 star because I asked for an estimate but the guy who could give one wasn't around so they said they'd call before doing anything. That didn't happen. I definitely would have had an issue with this if it was a more substantial repair. Ultimately worked out though and the price was very fair (parts plus labor at a rate of $120/hr). Wouldn't hesitate to return for a quick fix. read more

Today started with a dead battery, only 7 months old...and went down hill from there. Dave at Long's took my car in late this afternoon (a Saturday!), drove me home, found the weird reason why my car was stuttering & the brake lights wouldn't turn off, fixed it & refused to charge me. (Some strange little button thing broke underneath the break pedal) This isn't the first time he came to the rescue. The Hyundai dealer I went to lied & upped an estimate by about $1500 in unnecessary work. I was suspicious, so I asked Dave took a look at the problems they said I had to fix: they didn't exist. He also ordered the part Firestone said only a dealer could fix, repaired the broken window switch for 1/3 what Hyundai wanted to charge me and did it in an hour. My new best friend is Dave at Long's Automotive on Rowena. I don't know why it took me so long to dump Firestone & Hyundai for this honest & reasonable dependable mechanic. Plus, they have a shop dog named Chocolate. What more could you ask? (Absolutely don't get the bad reviews. Same old story: My catalytic converter got cut out of my Prius. Dave had everything taken care of, and very reasonable. I guess he's good with really stressed out people. I walked in, I drove out. I was flabbergasted that everything was super smooth and simple. The install of the converter and the shield took barely any time. Finished before I expected it. Also, Pong (?) offered me a cold beverage from their refrigerator. Real nice guys, very personable. There's also something to be said when a shop has a nice and easy going dog, that's used to being around people. I had a terrible experience today. The first time I came here it was when Long was the owner and I was very happy , he was honest and I could trust him, but now people who work there since Dave took over look at you down. They changed my oil like 6 month ago and today while I was driving home my car stated to tremble. I was with my friend who is 80 years old and I was worried that the car was going to stop in the middle of the road. Because I was very close to the shop I decide to take it there and in yelp says that it is open 24 hours. When I got there Dave told me that they were closed and that he would not look at the car. I asked him if he could look at the oil and said " no I am working on my own car" and he asked a very, very rude guy" he couldn't open the trunk of my car and he was telingl me that it was not his car and he did not have to know how to open it. After he opened it ,he look at the oil and he said that my car did not have any. He took some dirty oil and pour it into the engine. Always talking to me like if I was a stupid girl that doesn't know any thing. After he finished he asked Dave if he was going to charge me and he said " ,no I don't even care" I have been taken my car here many times and he does have the decency even to talk to me in a " normal way" I am a very nice woman , who respects people and and I cannot understand how someone can be so disrespectful. i won't take my car here anymore and this person doesn't deserve to a shop in my beautiful neighborhood!!! read more

Had to get my AC repaired; there was basically no Freon left. Given my Ford uses the newer type of Freon that not everyone can service, I was thankful to find this shop via a recommendation from another. I got the car looked at and repaired in less than 24 hours. They were very upfront that they *think* they solved the problem as they did identify a leak, and that the die test revealed no others, but that I need to keep a very close eye in the coming weeks and bring the car back should I suspect a bigger problem. I had been going to Long for over 20 years. My dad was an auto mechanic so I know my cars. Long was great, fair and responsive. Ever since Dave took over the shop, it has gone downhill. I gave him several chances, but after the last few times when he had my car and wouldn't answer the phone for up to 5 days at a time, I got fed up. So frustrating and disrespectful! I have never had such bad service before with lack of communication, fixing things without giving me a quote first, and just a lack of professionalism all around. This last time he had my car there for 3 days with no answer, and I just had to drive over there to pick it up. No work had been donw. It was just sitting there with the window open and the key in the ignition. What a way to ruin a fine business and its reputation. :( read more

Ok, here's the situation. My parents went away on a week's vacation and They left the keys to the brand new car - Wait, different song. I miss the Fresh Prince because Will Smith is all cocky. So..... I had appointment at Pep Boys. Got there, no parking and no one to come out and talk. Looped the lot 3 times. Ain't no shame in leaving even if they remember my face. Went to Rafik's next to my place. Tried to go there a few times in the past already. The guy ain't there. They guy is never there. I am there more than he is and I am not getting paid. I Show up to Long's. They met me, moved cars out of my way and started doing the oil change right away. And they look more packed than pep boys with a lot less people working. Business starts on arrival. Even if they do a terrible job I will always come back. Update (actually just slowly continuing. This review could lst an hour but you luckily get to just read the whole thing. I just went number 2 in their bathroom and I'm wearing short shorts so you wouldn't expect me to go number 2 because all you see are The Long Legs of Justice. In the previous sentence is it "all you see is" or "all you see are"? I know my Legs are Plural so it should be are but "The Long Legs of Justice" is the title of a single Unit. And this isn't the outfit I'm wearing but it's a picture I had in front of the car. I'll add the legs tooAnyway) So they did the oil change - quick! They topped off my transmission fluid which I needed. I don't know if I should write this but I offered the man a tip and he declined it. I don't know why that impresses me so much. In my mind it proves he's not after every dollar from me and their work is valuable. I also don't know if I should write this but while I was there, television's Dominic Dierkes. He requested an oil change. I also don't know if I should write this, but I told my wife that I quit bacon. I am trying, but I still have a couple pieces a week. At my work there is a whole tray of bacon for us everyday. I guess I should say I'm quitting. I used to eat like 10-15 pieces a day. I'm not doing it for my wife buy I also don't want to lie to her. I just said quit too early. It's a process. I mean I guess I am doing it for her because I want to live with her longer. On a side note you need to quit drinking fluoride. Just look where it comes from and then try to tell me that ingesting it makes it go to my teeth. IT DOES NOT! Please just watch a fluoride spill video.
