Jose is a gem. He is the owner/operator of Rod's auto. I drive a convertible - and on this particular model the back window motor regulator is apparently a problem with the car. They just stop working.... I called the dealership and they advised it would be a 700.00 repair. I went and saw Jose - and he said that the part is a dealer part. We called around and yes, he was correct it was a part you can only get from the dealer - and it was in fact on backorder. Since its not raining these days - he asked me if i could wait, and he would start checking junkyards. He found the part in 2 weeks... I brought it in today at 10 and had it back by 4:30. The window is fixed - but the best part was the price. He only charged me for the part and 1 1/2 hours labor (the dealer explained that its a difficult repair, you must remove my back seat and the side panel to get to motor to fix or replace it - hence the $700.00 charge). I've been coming to Jose for years - he kept my older model mitsubishi running until it finally was just too old to continue to drive. It was running fine when i traded it in for my current car. He even loaned me his work truck to get back and forth to Topanga Canyon when the old car would break. I recommend him highly! Do make sure that you have current tags on your car - as sometimes they have to shuffle cars around and park them on the street. You should do that any way - you are a grown up - Right?! read more

First off, to Courtney T., it's your fault your car got towed. If you owe the DMV more than $500, they tow you. You could have been parked on any street in LA and had the same thing happen. At least your car worked better when you got it out, hater. Second, this place is ideal. Jose, the owner has more integrity than any mechanic I've ever met. I've gotten oil changes at other auto shops and without fail there is a list of things they always recommend I fix. I only come to Jose now! Jose thoroughly checks your car out (brakes, tire pressure, etc) and all your fluid levels and will even fill up any fluid tanks that are running low, for free. He's an honest mechanic and does great work...which is hard to come by in LA. I've recommended all my friends come here. He even took time out of his day to test drive several used cars for my friend who was interested in buying a car, as he wanted to make sure she got a good, reliable car. So here I was going through and searching for a shop with a good reputation. I must say I'm a very big skeptic because of my previous experiences. My 350Z had some major problems so I was in a bit of a panic. Jose really broke things down on what the problems were and what needed to be fixed. He was up front and honest. He's not aggressive, and even did a couple extra things at no charge as a courtesy. The turnaround for the amount of work needed to be done on my car was unbelievably fast considering the amount of cars he actively works on. I was shocked when he told me my car was ready at the end of the second day. The whole time I made the assumption that the work would take about a week. I still need to do a little more work on my car and now I know where to take it. The 5 star rating on Rods Auto Repair certainly lives up to the hype. You will not be disappointed. The shop is small, crowded and ramshackle. Great... I know I am not paying for fancy infrastructure. They have the tools they need. It's also a good location for me near my home, not far away like most car shops. The service was fast, good and very reasonably priced. They fit me in on short notice. They were friendly and informative. They had the chance to do a lot of extra unnecessary work but they didn't take it! Instead they arranged cleverly to figure out if any more work is really needed. You can't even trust dealerships and national chains like Sears to be honest these days (remember the Sears auto repair scandal?). Because they have such limited space people might need to pick up their car soon after it is ready. Street parking is hard in the area. read more

Ford Focus Zx3 owners will probably nod in agreement when I say, that Ford parts are never what they're supposed to be. Over the years, I've shared my frustration with mechanics, who tried to get the correct parts from Ford only to find out, that the parts were either incomplete or didn't fit at all. No matter what "the book" says, the parts are almost never a match. Instead, you're better off taking tips and advice from other frustrated Ford Focus owners who share their experience and expertise in online forums. After my mechanic of many years had let me down twice I decided to look for a new mechanic. My criteria were: Honesty, repair skills, reasonable prices, communication, and located within walking distance (max. 30 min.) of my home AND one of my work places. That's when I found Rod's Auto online. Jose and his Team went through great length to fix my car. They had to criss-cross town several times, even during rush hour, as a result of Ford's incompetence, and Ford's flimsy, cheaply-made parts. After a couple of setbacks and delays, none of which were Jose's fault, he completed the repairs and even reinforced certain parts just to add security and give me peace of mind. Unbelievable service... rod is extremely knowledgeable and very informative. I was told I needed new oxygen sensors by a different mechanic and after inspecting the oxygen sensors rod was honest and said they were completely fine. Clearly the other mechanic was trying to throw me a curveball but rod definitely was not. Cheapest price I found for the small evap leak I had. He also showed me all the parts after and explained exactly what went wrong with each of them which was pretty cool. read more

I don't understand why my experience is so contrary to everyone else's, as I found and selected Rod's based on others' Yelp reviews. I simply needed my oil changed and fluids topped off someplace close to my home and with competitive pricing. I rolled into Rod's right off Sunset Blvd on a residential side street.... Hole-in-the-wall is too kind a descriptor. I love true hole-in-the-wall restaurants and attractions, where quality and quirkiness are valued above marketing and profit, but I have learned that this isn't necessarily a good approach when it comes to repair and longterm maintenance of a vehicle. Rod's is the kind of the place where the workspaces are clearly delineated by trash, parts, screws, etc., that are within arm's reach, look like they've been placed there years ago, and will probably never be touched until the space is vacated in when Rod/Jose moves on. To me that was a preview of the attitude and workmanship I was to experience; I should have trusted my instinct and left instead of being polite and allowing Jose & his staff to work on my car. His casually disinterested attitude convinced me that this was a guy who wasn't interested in taking advantage of people who don't know cars. But I later concluded that not only is he not interested in unfairly profiting off customers, he seems to have zero interest in performing quality work or in vehicle repair in general. When I got the call that my car was ready, I was too far away to pick it up before closing, so I came the next morning. This shop has spaces for about four cars, and three of them have 'classics' in them - more likely someone's longterm abandoned project best suited to a junkyard. Where was my car? Parked on the street, two blocks away. Also, I was reminded to pick it up before 10am to avoid a street cleaning ticket. Not exactly cool, but whatever, I can deal, and thanks for warning me about the parking ticket...I used to park my car on the street for a few years, so I understand. I was ready for my car to run smoother, with that extra pep that comes after every other oil change. How did it run? It shook, sputtered, and misfired when idling. I called Jose back, and he asked if I was sure it wasn't like that before I brought it in? Keep an eye on it another couple of days to see if it improves. The next day, the check engine light came on, and in rapid succession the gasket popped while driving on the freeway, the car began smoking, and died on me - while driving on the freeway! I improvised a temporary fix using the internet and some tools and took the car back to Rod's the next day. They reapplied the gasket after a few hours and said everything was OK. The car was ready for me to pick up and was parked one street over. The same sputtering and misfiring continued, and the check engine light came back on, but I had learned my lesson. I like places with casual attitudes, but this was beyond the pale. I took my car somewhere else where the problem was quickly diagnosed, repaired, and ready to go. I cannot prove that Rod's caused the sudden, catastrophic failure of my aging car on the freeway, but the timing of the problems immediately after taking it to this shop, coupled with the disinterested, cavalier attitude of the owner/manager and his staff are reason enough for me to keep away forever and to write this warning to others. read more

Went here after reading the yelp reviews and was not disappointed. I went in because my car had been acting a little quirky and I was going to be doing a long road trip. I brought it in in the morning without an appointment and got it back by the end of the day. They told me that they couldn't find anything wrong and I probably just need to drive my car more than I do since it is getting older (it doesn't get a whole lot of use). When I went to pay he told me not to worry about it since they didn't find anything! I was on my way to work at the airport when I noticed my left rear view mirror on the door was on the ground and shattered into pieces. It's a brand new Nissan Sentra 2012 and I've never had any incidents with vandalism ever. :( Jose called the dealer to deliver the exact mirror and just charged me $70 total for the mirror and tax and nothing for labor. Jose is a quality guy. I had just moved to LA when the A/C on my "new to me" used car went out. A 2008 audi, WTF! Regardless, Jose went to great lengths to fix it while trying to keep the cost down.
