My mom ended up getting food to go while on our roadtrip...... She said the smells are deceiving. She didn't like the taste of anything. She also said the baked beans tasted like they took a big scoop straight from the can, no seasoning or anything. The best part was the bread and the potato salad was decent. "Well, here's the thing." That might be the sentence that most uncomfortable phrases start with in the south, but I have to be honest here. In a town that has "Hog" in its name in Georgia, it would be downright disrespectful to have BBQ that "ain't" cooked properly. While Rogers Pit has an awesome vintage coke machine at the front and a door the handle of which had come loose a long time ago, it just isn't a spot I can recommend. The wood interior has an authentic saloon like feel and the people working here are kind. Yet, it's just the BBQ here that just isn't that good. BBQ chopped pork is dry and is mixed with a dense sauce loaded up with vinegar that takes away any goodness that the pork ever had. The ribs are not great either, a bit tough and also loaded up in vinegary BBQ sauce completely concealing the flavor. Potato salad is overly sweet for my taste, but someone may like it. Okra is fried perfectly. All around, the place is so promising, but just does not deliver. It is below average and I just can't recommend it. read more

I've been here twice in a couple years. I like the onion rings, the slaw, and the Texas toast the best. The toast is grilled on both sides with lots of butter. Yum! The slaw is like KFC or chic fila. The BBQ is good but not my favorite. Their only sauce is tangy, red-orange. The Brunswick stew is tasty. Again, not my personal favorite style, but I've had worse. Nothing to write home about. The fries would have been awesome if they were fresher... I suspect they were under a heat lamp for a bit. Table service is good, but I would have liked then to be snappier with the check. Food served on styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery. I'll eat here again when I happen to pull off the interstate at this exit. read more

I don't post many reviews but the last two experiences here were not good. This place use to be better years ago. The last two times I met up with my brother who works nearby to grab lunch. The first time wasn't a horrible experience but it took a long time to get food , about a 30 minute wait when it wasn't busy. Today was the worst , we decided to give it another try. Only one other table seated besides us. I was informed they didn't have stew ready and someone in the back said it would be a couple hours. To be fair this was opening time but most places have an opener who prepares things so it's ready at opening time. Still not a huge deal and none of this I would even bother to write a bad review about until in the middle of eating, my brother pulled a large piece of plastic or plastic wrap out of his mouth that had been mixed in with the sauce and everything. Mentioned it to the waitress , she said it was wrapping from the night before when it was stored. Great. She removed my brother's part off the receipt and asked if he wanted a piece of dessert on the house . He said sure . We waited a while and never received it. We stumbled across this place by accident and due to hunger. The first few times the food was phenomenal! In recent years not so much. There isn't consistency in the taste of the food. You can't go wrong with the ribs, catfish, and sweet tea. Most of the sides aren't homemade. I like the Texas toast and french fries. The service is okay. First Timer....We were headed back to Atlanta, GA and stopped off to get a bite to eat @ Roger's on 3/8 around 11:30. My sister bragged about the brunswick stew and we wanted to try the ribs. The atmosphere was great and the server was really polite, but I must say that we were very disappointed with the food. We both order the 1/2 babyback ribs plate which was 11.99 + taxes and the ribs were so dry that we could not even eat them. My sister felt responsible for suggesting the place so she decided to cover the tag instead of saying anything to management. If you are ever in the area and thinking of getting good Bbq......I would suggest that you keep driving to Montgomery or Atlanta. read more

Roger's hands down has the absolute best Brunswick stew. I've eaten stew throughout GA and the Southeast. Even that bastardized version in Alabama called camp stew. No one does it better than Roger's. The flavor profile is right on the money. I routinely come back from LA and SF and the moment I land at Hartsfield-Jackson, I have one destination in mind and that's Roger's. Came here to Georgia or the first time. I remembered some food tv special about BBQ in the south. My subconscious was urging me to find a BBQ place and I found this one. It's right by the interstate, quiet, clean looking, and generally really inviting. Decor is really something. I count 9 different animal trophies on the walls. It looked like a luxurious alpine lodge with tall ceilings. Ordered the sliced rogers famous BBQ sandwich and the chocolate pie. All very delicious. However, i didn't think the sauce was all that great. Not what i expected, although the proprietors seem to have enough demand for the sauce to sell them in bottles. So I stopped off at this place based upon the recommendation of a co-worker. I was in the area on business for the day and it's simply down hike cooking. The service was friendly and attentive. I ordered the special-- country fried steak with okra and turnip greens which came with a cornbread muffin and gravy. The greens were on point with a nice flavor. The okra was fresh but a bit undercooked even though I asked to be cooked hard. The steak was nicely cooked it didn't carry much flavor though maybe because the gravy was meant for the steak and my request was for it to be on the side. I didn't eat the cornbread but my coworker said it was simple in taste. The waitress gave a complimentary slice of German chocolate cake I sampled a bite the gesture was most kind and appreciative. The wings were fall off the bone and excellent, the sweet and tangy bbq sauce is spot on. The chopped pork was mediocre, I was not a fan of the premixed sauce. We were missing a side of coleslaw which is not a huge deal but still we paid for it and did not get. The staff was nice, but the food was not good. I would have rather had McDonalds next door. We were on a road trip and wanted something different but regret the money and calories spent at this establishment. The bbq pork was super dry and chewy. The brisket was the worst we've ever had - like beef jerky with less taste. The Mac and cheese also dry and bland. Brunswick Stew is a must! I will tell you the stew is really close to BBQ hash which you can rarely find these days. Thick and hearty with lots of meat. I would drive out of my way to have this stew again. Place is your typical bbq place. Closer to a dive than anything else but the service was good. I would recommend you try it out. read more

I always try to plan my long overnight flight from San Francisco to Columbus, Georgia to coincide with lunch time at Roger's Barbeque. By the time I've gotten my rental car, it usually works out just right. My taste buds are salivating as soon as I see the Hogansville exit signs. The menu brings back memories of my youth - all kinds of wonderful barbecue - pork, chicken, baby back ribs - catfish and hushpuppies, fried green tomatoes, great Southern vegetables like fried okra, green beans, yellow squash and, of course, fried green tomatoes. Their Brunswick stew is delicious, too. Of course, desserts are pecan pie, peach cobbler, banana pudding - washed down with iced tea, sweetened or unsweetened. Replenished, I can happily continue my journey onward to Columbus and, if I have time, I stop on the way back to the Atlanta airport for my return trip to San Francisco! For openers, the word is "sweet." The slaw was sweet, the molasses based sauce on the baby-backs was sweet, the baked beans had a sweet flavor, even their "special" sauce (mustard based) had a sweet taste about it. All that said, Rogers Barbecue does a good job with most everything barbecue on their menu, save only the baby-backs with their thick molasses, almost candied, based char. The brisket was thin sliced, nice char evidencing a tasty rub; the pulled pork was full flavor and fully saturated with their special sauce. And while not usually a fan of mustard based barbecue sauces, this one is good - albeit a little (you saw this coming) sweet. Their Brunswick Stew (note capitalization) is world class.Better than Harold's near the prison in Atlanta. The meat in the stew was minced and full flavored. The sides are served in fairly generous portions in separate dishes - no mingling of sauces and juices here. Roger's baked beans were the run of the mill baked beans you find at many barbecue joints, the slaw was finely chopped ad better than average. Didn't try the fries (the waitress confessed they come frozen), but my roommate said her lima beans were likely cooked with ham and a few good shots of pepper and exceptional. Roger's menu boast of a barbecue history dating back to 1945 - that said you have to wonder why they clutter their menu with steaks, wings, shrimp or catfish. Prices range from $3.99 and $4.99 for sandwiches ( regular/large) to $8.99 for a dinner with three sides, and $12.49 for a combo plate (the Brown Shoe Gourmet opted for baby-backs and pulled pork) plus the three sides. Just off I-85 (exit 28), dangerously close to the Alabama state line, Rogers is worth finding. Our waitress, a Tanya if ever I've met one, was pleasant, and provided good service - apologizing that they didn't have a t-shirt for me to add to my 'cue shirt collection. The place is hunting lodge spacious (lots of animal heads staring down), clean and with good 'cue - but skip the baby-backs. Too sweet. read more

Stopped in at Roger's BBQ on the way down to Florida from Atlanta and got some decent plates of food which we would need in order to endure the 5-hour drive. I was in the mood for a hot dog so I ordered the slaw dog with a side of fries and cole slaw. The dog was great and the coleslaw was nice and sweet and not too heavy. My husband is not a huge BBQ fan (he's a yankee!), so he said the food was just mediocre. He didn't like the brunswick stew and said it was too runny without enough chunky vegetables, but I tried it and thought it was just right and tasted like any other brunswick stew I've had (I just don't think he's had real brunswick stew, not being from the South and all). His pulled pork BBQ was pretty good, not the best I've tried but good enough. Don't order their water from the tap, it tasted really gross--i'm sure I should have gotten sweet tea instead. They have a pretty large dining room with tons of deer heads on the wall and cute country/southwestern paraphanalia everywhere. You can also see the big smoker where they cook the meat from where we were sitting, which was an added bonus.
