For a 4.8 star ranking, i expected so much more from this place and was quite underwhelmed and disappointed. I am quite shocked at the high rankings. I honestly think people rate it high because it is owned by Kei Concepts (well known brand name), aesthetics, and service. Other then that, i don't think it is worth the money. I don't know what i was expecting from an hand roll set, but the portions were quite small. I also think the fish taste are so similar and bland. If you provided me a salmon and yellow tail hand roll, i wouldn't be able to tell the difference. For the set price, i don't think it is worth it. The only notable dish was the crispy rice which was only 3 pieces ($3 each piece). I also came out of that restaurant still pretty hungry. I won't be craving this place anytime soon. Came on a Saturday around 5:30pm and had waited about 15-20 min to be seated. The hosts and chefs were all friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was clean from the dining area to the restroom. We ordered Set Menu 2 with 6 hand rolls. The fish tasted fresh, and the ratio of rice to fish was well balanced in each. Set menus are a good way to try a variety of options and felt worth the price. The portion was also filling enough to leave us content. We saw some customers order the inari and looked good, but we were too full to add on more food. First time here and was happily surprised . It is a pretty good comparable spot to the Kazunori original hand bar . I ordered the six roll set menu. My favorite was the crunchy salmon which is salmon with some crispy fried onions I believe on top. Great flavor the seaweed was yummy. I thought that the scallop roll had way too much mayo and it was a bit watery and the blue crab was OK a bit salty. Ordered the Yuzu drink, and that was refreshing. ROL is great and one of the better Kei Concept restaurants! We added our name to the waitlist in the parking lot, but only waited about 20 minutes till we got seated. The service was very kind! They checked in about allergies and changed gloves every time they prepped a hand roll for us. I got the six hand roll set with no substitutions and the truffle soy sauce! Definitely never thought of that combo, but will be making that at home moving forward! Every roll was delicious and felt proportionally filled. The seaweed was very crispy and never got too soggy. This is a proper hand roll place. Everything had a fresh taste, but the Uni was definitely not Santa Barbara Uni, so shame on our server for saying it was. The buttery, ocean-less taste that comes with SB uni was not there. Aside from that hiccup, all of our rolls were delicious. This was my first time going to this restaurant and I'm honestly in love. The style reminded me of Japan's actual sushi bars, putting me right back in the small hidden gems that I found while touring Tokyo. Every single time I come down to OC I come here for the Build Your Own Donburi. Not even joking, every time. I've had donburis everywhere, fancy ones upwards of $120 with caviar, imported uni, etc, Las Vegas, New York, the Bay, LA. I always find myself thinking about and missing this one. What sets it apart is the yuzu sauce and their special soy sauce. So damn good and I haven't found a combo like it anywhere else. Staff is always friendly and the packaging is really well done too. Everything is neatly packed and they actually give you good takeout chopsticks instead of the cheap ones that splinter and sturdy utensils. Small thing but makes a big difference to the takeout experience. Only feedback is I wish there was an option to ask for the fish more roughly chopped instead of super finely minced. I know most Japanese spots don't do this, but I personally would like the texture better. I love the kei concepts bathrooms, they're always thoughtfully put together. Having mixed feelings after our visit yesterday Wait was reasonable (still 30 min on Wednesday evening), hostess and staff were all so friendly. Noticed the prices went from last time, but in this economy I don't blame them. The strip lights were also falling from under the bar onto my lap, but I suppose that happens. The food tasted good, but we were absolutely shocked at the portions. Compared to even just when we visited two months ago (granted a different location) the rolls were not only noticeably skinnier but also missing a whole bite's worth of filling (see picture). Even while eating the rolls there were some bites where it was purely rice and not even a noticeable amount of fish. And obviously the rolls won't look 100% like the restaurant's promo pictures but the stark difference between picture and reality is something I'd expect from a fast food joint, not a nice sit down spot T.T My best explanation for the gap is that you start from the other side so the fillings don't spill out at the back as you work your way down, but still overall doesn't explain why they looked skinny and felt lacking with each bite. Before ROL opened up in Irvine, we used go to one of their other locations whenever we were in the area. Now that they are located right next to SUP, this place is now my wifes new go-to place. We really like the lunch specials as they are very reasonable in price. I ate at ROL Hand Roll Bar for the first time today and it was at their Irvine location off Culver Blvd. You can check in on Yelp to join the waitlist to be seated but luckily my family of 4 was seated right away. They don't have a kids menu (my kids love sushi) so I just ordered my kids the 5 hand roll set. They liked the Scallop hand roll the best followed by the Spicy Tuna (they liked the crunch) and then the Yellowtail with scallions. They also liked the salmon hand roll. The Blue Crab roll was their least favorite and I tried it too and I think they put too much mayonnaise on it so it tasted like the tuna fish sandwiches I'd eat when I was a kid in the 80s. I took a bite to sample each of my kids' hand rolls and I agreed with their ranking however I thought the spicy tuna was the best (I loved the crunch) and I also liked the scallop because of how creamy and rich it tasted. As for myself, I did wanted to do the $15 lunch hand roll set (what great value!) but while it was lunch, it was NOT M-F and since it was the weekend they didn't offer it so instead I ordered "The High Roller Set" which was $55 and consisted of 5 hand rolls, miso soup and a "premium sauce": -Truffle Mushroom hand roll 8/10 -Uni & Toro hand roll 10/10 -Lobster Hand Roll 7/10 (too much mayo like I mentioned above for the Blue crab - overpowering it with mayonnaise reminds me too much of the tunafish salad sandwiches I'd eat on white bread back in the 80s - ugh) -Toro-Taku 9/10 -Surf & Turf 10/10 (Looove the Wagu) -Miso Soup 10/10 (can't really mess up miso soup) -Yuzu Special Sauce 7/10 (the flavor was fine but the texture was really syrupy so that thick texture was off-putting to me - I actually ended up requesting Ponzu which I thought paired much better and was less overpowering We also ordered the: -furikake fries 9/10 (come with a great sauce and they are super crispy so be warned I prefer mushy fries but my husband who likes super thin crispy fries loved these - I liked the furikake flavoring as well as the dipping sauce) -cucumber salad 7/10 (it was more soy based and not as sweet and vinegary like I prefer elsewhere) Overall, it was fun to sit at the bar and order hand rolls and my kids had fun. 4.5I am feeling oh so GRATEFUL that a handroll bar has finally made its way to Irvine! We tried out Rol on Saturday night after over six months of anticipation given the awesome reviews I had both read online and heard from friends. We started with the specialty crispy rice and then tried the shrimp, scallop, salmon, spicy tuna crunch, and toro as well as the spicy tuna inari and the salmon donburi. We LOVED the crispy rice; I would say it was maybe one of the best I've had and even my mom who doesn't usually enjoy the dish was a huge fan of it. The inari is definitely not a dish I would order again as I personally did not love the sweet tofu in combo with the spicy/umami fish. As far as roll rankings (best to worst) go I would have to say: salmon, scallop, spicy tuna crunch, toro, shrimp. The shrimp is perhaps the only one I would not order again. That being said, all the fish was incredibly fresh. My dad was very content with his donburi and I enjoyed the bite I tried. The concept is very similar to NYC's KazuNori and I live the bar seats personally given the dynamic experience it creates. I just wish it was a little darker and louder but that's just me being picky. We were also very impressed with the efficiency of the service. Overall, Rol is definitely a new addition to our rotation and I'm so excited to come back over and over again (and mb get some photos because I completely forgot last time)! read more

There's a guy who only works lunches on Fridays because this is not what he does mainly. I don't want to get philosophical, but I think that whatever you do, you should do it 100% and be proud of it. How do I know this, you might ask? He was the only hand roll roller that was working at the time of mine and boyfriend's visit, and thus he was spread thin. But somehow, he found time to speak to the two pretty girls next to me, but not enough time to fulfill mine and my boyfriend's order for sauces. I'm not saying that his responsibility is more than what we saw, but I am saying that his responsibility is to not speak exclusively to the two pretty girls about their living situations. We went here for lunch and the lunch special is pretty solid! Miso, small bowl of edamame and four hand rolls (salmon, spicy tuna, scallop, and blue crab). You have the option to swap any of them out for each other and personally, I would get two salmons and two spicy tunas. The scallop was covered in a mayonnaise type sauce and was too overpowering. The blue crab had the similar thing where the sauce was too much. But I also don't like crab, so take that with a grain of salt. You can't bring outside drinks. I am a fan of the KEI Concept restaurants and I frequent Nep in this same plaza. I have tried ROL in Huntington Beach so I wasn't in a rush to visit their Irvine location until I saw they had a High Roller Set ($55) for limited time. For those not familiar with ROL, this concept specialized in hand rolls. The High Roller Set includes the following handrolls: Truffle Mushroom, Toro-Taku, Lobster, Surf & Turf, and Uni & Toro. The set also comes with miso soup and your choice of truffle soy sauce or yuzu kosho, in which I opted for the yuzu kosho. They will give you one handroll at a time so that the seaweed paper is still fresh and crunchy. I actually like eating here alone more because when I ate with a friend, the timing of our handrolls would never align. Be patient if you decide to come here, because it may take a while. 6:02 pm - Miso Soup 6:04 pm - Truffle Mushroom - Open faced roll. Very impressive start to the meal. I was very impressed at how flavorful this handroll was. The textures were also great with the fried mushrooms. 6:09 pm - Toro-Taku - Closed roll. Lacking filling. Tastes okay. 6:17 pm - Lobster - Closed roll. Not too impressed. 6:21 pm - Surf & Turf - Open faced roll. Very impressed. Wow! So flavorful. It even had caviar. 6:29 pm - Uni & Toro - Open faced roll. Designed to look better than function better. The uni and caviar are all centered in the middle. Nevertheless still pretty tasty. I was still hungry after this so I ordered a Spicy Salmon Crunch ($6) handroll, which came out surprisingly fast, and a Cookies & Cream Panna Cotta ($7). Tasty but the container had a small opening and topped with whipped creamed and oreos, making it hard to dig in without spilling stuff and making a mess. If I were to come back I would order a la carte, but I would only go when they aren't busy. Service was really slow in the sense that I had to flag staff down for more ginger and water. It was because they were clearly busy, but still does hinder the dining experience. One other suggestion for improvement is having handwipes for customers who order hand rolls. Similar restaurant concepts would offer me a towel or hand wipes prior to eating when I eat hand rolls. Pricing is about the same for other handroll specialized businesses, so their normal sets cost about as much as another business nearby, but the other business is a little more quick getting me my rolls even when they're busy. I would come back if there's new menu options or limited specials that intrigue me. Wow, I am so glad I found this place. Their interior is very modern and minimalistic. It's a small place, so there aren't many seats. There were no private tables; instead, you sit around a C-shaped bar, so get ready to sit next to a stranger. Their hand rolls and maki rolls are great. I love their crispy nori and various special sauces. I tried one sauce that has yuzu in it, and it was surprisingly good. The only caveat is that when I tried that sauce last time, it seemed like either MSG or another ingredient gave me dry mouth and a headache--my typical bodily reaction to MSG. I think next time I'll just get a lunch set and add on some of the premium rolls I enjoyed. It came with truffle mushroom, toro taku, lobster, surf & turf, and Uni toro. Truffle mushroom was great but wouldn't go to it again. It's a deep fried enoki mushroom, very crispy and flavorful. Toro taku is toro with pickled daikon radish. Nice combo. Eat it fast because the sauce drips out from the other side. Surf and turf had A5 Wagyu in it, not my favorite. I'm just not a fan in general but this set would be great if you love lobster. The last roll was the best: Uni toro. $24 on its own though. It was so good I wanted another one. The Uni was buttery!! Sweet, not fishy. And the toro was creamy and fresh. My bf enjoyed the rolls he got, he ordered the lunch set and added a toro hand roll. I'd probably get that next time and add the Uni toro. One of the best parts lately is that the line isn't too bad anymore, making it much easier to grab a seat than it used to be. They offer several set menus, and I usually opt for the 5 or 6-roll set--it's the perfect amount of food to feel satisfied. Tip: Its all bar seating. If you order the hand roll sets they will make it for you as you eat so the seaweed stays fresh. Came on a Sunday night with a gf. Super happy that there was not a wait for us with the bar full. Interesting and cool concept with hand rolls in a bar setting. It was a nice treat. We both got the 7 roll meal and full after the 5th roll --packed the rest. Fresh and delicious handrolls! The edamame was the best with garlic spice. They forgot about our cucumber salad but brought it out when we address that. Cocktails were good. Service could have been more attentive. Finally got to try Rol via Doordash delivery! Got their box of 5 maki: salmon, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and yellowtail x2. Also got a side of their cucumber and seasoned fries. The fries were very tasty. The cucumber was a little too sweet for me. The sushi was fresh and light. read more
