    Crispy Rice Tartare
    Chris L.

This was a pretty cool dining experience. It's set up like a sushi bar and you eat at the counter. The hand rolls were good and made in front of you. We went with the 7 set which included salmon, yellow tail, unagi, toro, spicy tuna, blue crab, and scallop rolls. The crispy rice appetizer was good as well. The rolls came out fast and service was great.

Love the handroll bar concept. I wasn't too hungry and opted for the 5 handroll set. They allow up to 2 substitutions but I stuck with the original menu. My favorite was the scallop and yellowtail handroll. If I were to visit again, I'd probably skip the substitute the blue crab for another scallop instead since the crab flavor didn't do much for me. I love that the rice is served warm and the nori is super crispy. They recommend eating the handroll within 15s after you're served. Service is great and we were lucky there was no wait when we visited on a Sat.

I know once I post this review I'll get some ChatGPT response from the business, but I'm still going to give praise for the build your own donburi bowl I ordered from Ubereats. It looked exactly like the picture, the fish was fresh, and I had it with some soy sauce and yuzu sauce to add more flavor. Highly recommend!

Fish was fresh and overall solid. However, for the price and experience sold to you, the food and drinks were not too impressive. Drinks were very sweet. I prefer other Kei Concepts restaurants to this one. Staff were otherwise friendly and helpful, quick to fill your plate with your next roll. The place itself is mainly high bar side seating which makes sense for the style of service. Looks like a modern sushi restaurant essentially.

This is my favorite sushi spot (along with sugarfish) to get fresh handrolls made right in front of you with warm rice and cold sushi. If you never had it like that the texture and differences in temperature are mind blowing good, then wash it down with a coconut ube beer and you are in heaven. The inside is small and counter seating only so come quickly and don't forget to add your name to the waitlist.

Back again for my son's birthday. Ever since he was 3 we have been coming to ROL (all locations). Love Kei Concepts. The hand rolls are delicious. I also get the Kaisendon. All the servers are welcoming and friendly. All bar seating.

I love this spot for hand rolls!! They have set menus of 5-7 hand rolls and allowed us to make switches/changes to some. I ordered the 5 set and thought that was a perfect portion. The fish was very flavorful and fresh, and the outside seaweed was crispy! They all came at a good pace and service was good. Also got the guava refresher which was so delicious. FYI you can do yelp waitlist here! Also seating is like bar seating (won't be able to sit at tables for bigger groups).

Came on a Saturday around 5:30pm and had waited about 15-20 min to be seated. The hosts and chefs were all friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was clean from the dining area to the restroom. We ordered Set Menu 2 with 6 hand rolls. The fish tasted fresh, and the ratio of rice to fish was well balanced in each. Set menus are a good way to try a variety of options and felt worth the price. The portion was also filling enough to leave us content. We saw some customers order the inari and looked good, but we were too full to add on more food. Will come back to try more items on the menu!

The food was super good! I loved the ceviche omg, and also their drinks (non-alcoholic) are super unique. The staff was very attentive. I was getting so full, and before I even asked if I wanted less rice, they asked me. They were very aware the 7 piece rol and the crispy tuna and the ceviche were definitely filling up my stomach fast LOL. Love the vibes, although I can see how the line will move very slow due to limited seating. I wanna go again! I think they had a takeout option in a cute bento but I'm not sure.

I love ROL I have tried both pickup and dine in. I experienced dine in recently and the servers were attentive and quick. There is a wait but it is worth it. Fresh quality and great hand rolls. I love the crispy rice tartare. Great service 10/10 would recommend.

ROL is great and one of the better Kei Concept restaurants! We added our name to the waitlist in the parking lot, but only waited about 20 minutes till we got seated. The service was very kind! They checked in about allergies and changed gloves every time they prepped a hand roll for us. I got the six hand roll set with no substitutions and the truffle soy sauce! Definitely never thought of that combo, but will be making that at home moving forward! Every roll was delicious and felt proportionally filled. The seaweed was very crispy and never got too soggy. The pacing of the meal was just right as well. The crispy rice tartare is excellent and one of the better ones I've tried! The rice is the right level of crisp and there was a lot of tuna! It's a bite size, so it could be a little bigger given the price ($9). The inside mimics Kazunori with bar seating and the open kitchen. Nothing too special design wise but, I'm definitely looking forward to coming again!

This is a proper hand roll place. Everything had a fresh taste, but the Uni was definitely not Santa Barbara Uni, so shame on our server for saying it was. The buttery, ocean-less taste that comes with SB uni was not there. Aside from that hiccup, all of our rolls were delicious. From their toro to their salmon, there is a good rice-to-fish distribution in the roll. Their Japanese beer options also hit the spot. All prices were also extremely reasonable for both food and drinks. Service was friendly, even for a late-night sitting, when we were among the last to be served before closing. In my opinion, this is better than KazuNori, the service and quality of the fish are both above theirs.

Look at the presentation style before you even eat, really sets the standard for quick paced sushi bars!

This was my first time going to this restaurant and I'm honestly in love. The style reminded me of Japan's actual sushi bars, putting me right back in the small hidden gems that I found while touring Tokyo. True to the name of this restaurant, the rolls are made fresh and in full view. I loved that they served the rolls fresh onto your plate and you eat as they make them allowing the temperature of the filling to be as fresh as possible and the texture of the seaweed wrap to be perfectly crispy. My favorite was the crab roll and the tempura roll. An additional thing that I really loved was that they had hooks available under the bar to hang your bag so it's not tangled in everyone that passed through or falling off the chair when you try to situate it behind you. Their truffle soy sauce and fresh wasabi was an insane combination but I'm definitely coming back to try all of the other flavors too.

ROL Hand Roll Bar - Irvine Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - ROL Hand Roll Bar - Irvine

If I can't have garlic and spicy food, can I eat here? I'm concerned about all of the warnings they have on the website about cross contamination, etc.

Yes, most of the rolls are not spicy and do not contain garlic.

    Can you provide gluten-free options?

Non-celiac gluten-sensitive here. I was able to eat the salmon, toro and blue crab handrolls. I was advised to avoid the salmon spicy tuna donburi and furikake fries due to gluten. No dipping in soy sauce ofc.

They have tons of parking in this shopping center. They share it with TONS of other places. One of my BFFs saw this on an Instagram video and wanted to check it out. *They do take reservations When we came in we checked in with one of the waitresses. She said she would seat us in a minute. To be honest, she did forget about us. A waiter walked up to us and asked us what was going on (we were standing there for around 7 - 10 minutes) and we told him we had a reservation for the speakeasy. He immediately apologized and sat us. This camp themed speakeasy has a couple booths. It's on the smaller sides. Which, speakeasy's are usually small to begin with. I did not get the waitresses name, my friend and I were busy catching up. The waitress was nice, but not attentive. I will say service was a 2/5. However, the actual restaurant, cozy pine is located in, was packed because of the World Cup being on TV. So I definitely was not going to complain The food Our food order did come out extremely FAST. Faster than our drink orders. -the campfire guacamole -BBQ shoestring fries (had bbq seasoning all over them so it tasted like a BBQ potato chip) -Glamping plate (charcuterie board) -steak tacos (one without onion and cilantro -churro affogato Again, the food was VERY fast!! And to be honest it wasn't that bad. I'll say, speakeasy's usually shine in the drink department vs food. Drinks -Lycheed and Loaded Ketel One, lychee liqueur, lemon, elderflower. This was extremely delicious! If you don't like to taste your alcohol? Go with this. It was really refreshing. Hand this to me at a spa and I'd be the happiest gal in the world -Camp Anawanna $17 Graham cracker-infused bourbon, licor 43, chocolate, torched marshmallow (the waitress catches the marshmallow on fire at the table) This one was stronger and I didn't think it was overly sweet despite the ingredients I think they had a good selection, especially for a small speakeasy. I have been to better, so I don't think I'd return. Especially since the service was not that great. We still had a good time and recommend for every speakeasy lovers list.

When you go thru the sliding doors it immediately transports you to a different time and place. Its very dark. Sleek. And modern. Yet simple. I love the big screen tvs with areal views of New York. It just made it feel like we were in a high rise building or a blimp with a birds eye view of many of New Yorks beautiful landmarks. The couches were extremely comfortable too. Great cushion. You just sink into them. Its a small area but great utilization of the space, making it seem large and spacious. The chairs too were really comfortable to sit in. We spent 3 hours in there and it flew by so quickly. The ambiance and feel here was just truly top notch. Our waitress was Brandy, or is it Brandi? She was super cool. She was a one person crew. Basically getting orders, making drinks, cleaning tables, and checking in on us. And she did it with great charisma, attitude and personality. Super knowledgeable about the menu. Made great drinks quickly. And was just super personable. Great job from her!! Her attitude and demeanor really matched the top tier aura they were going for here. They have a great selection of drinks. From more alcohol forward drinks to light and fruity drinks to refreshing drinks. I really did enjoy their drink selections. We had a total of about 6 drinks and they were all really good! We got there: 1. Fox's wedding- light, seeet and refreshing. I love the origami piece that Brandy put on it as well. Looked so beauitful. 2. Guava chiffon pancake- it was tropical, light but also had a coconut feel to it. It was really good. 3. The Monroe- this was light but tart, but not too tart. Silky with fruit forward notes. 4. Miso honey butter corn- rarely is a savory cocktail good. But this one was pretty good. The butter fat washed burbon was super intriguing. But it works well 5. When pigs fly- came with a paper airplane on top!! Haha. Love the playfulness. But the drink was so complex yet smooth. It was really good. For the bourbon drinkers, this one is for you! 6. Smoked Old Fashion- presentation is amazing. Comes in a big glass case that has cherry wood smoke inside. When you open it, you get that intense smell of burning cherry wood. Drink is smokey but in a very good way. Tasted amazing. A true classic done right. Their food menu is very encompassing and thorough as well. From full on burgers, to flat breads, to appetizers and small bites, to salads. They have a little of everything!! We ordered the following: 1. Pub nachos- this was an extremely large plate of loaded nachos. Super crunchy and fresh. I loved the generous amount of Chipotle chicken on top. The pepper jack queso sauce and jalapeño crema was a really good sauce. It just binded everything together. The beans and the fresh jalapeño just really all worked together. It was super good. Kept you grazing and munching away, but never becoming too full (more room for their drinks!!). 2. Figgy piggy flat bread- it was ok. Sweet caramel onions and fig jam, paired with some pungent cheeses. I thought it was pretty good. 3. Shrimp street tacos- 1 order comes with 2 tacos. They were good sizes. I love their tacos. So flaverful. Everything works together. Just tasted amazing!! Overall everything about this place is 5 stars. The ambiance, the decor, the exclusivity. The service. The drinks and the food. As i said 3 hours went by so fast!! Definitely a must try when in the area. And when you stay at the Marriott, its just a simple walk back to your room. And we left feeling happy and amazing. Thank you very much Brandy!!

After our party of six chatted over cocktails and preyed on pupus, we moved to a "secret" room tucked in the back of Stowaway and walked into a Belly Of The Beast. The founders and co-owners of Stowaway, Leonard Chan and Dominic Iapello, created this extension to the tiki bar with a wildly interesting Pinocchio theme and the famed encounter with Monstro the whale all the while serving the same offerings in Stowaway but with also an exclusive limited menu just for this adventure. With its proximity to Disneyland and its Enchanted Tiki Room, with the very niche underground-like society of tiki culture they found a consistent customer base and the thrill of island escapism through colorful cocktails, pleasurable pupus, tropical trimmings, and nostalgic know-how. How would my belly handle the beastly drinks concocted here!? PURCHASE(S) Gepetto's Last Words ($16.00): Intrigued by the cocktail's name, this elixir was crafted with Fid Street Gin, tangerine, creme de violette, lemon, and cucumber, it was a citrusy refreshing sweet drink that was decorated with bright yellow petals. It was nice, but for whatever reason it just didn't quite hit the spot. [ONION RINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT - 4.0 of 5.0 STARS] Onion Rings ($9.00): A decent portion with rings of medium to large sizes, these were hot, dark golden browned, crunchy, and had a slight tendency to crumble when bitten into while the onion ring (sweet Maui!) rarely pulled out at times. They were lightly oily while the catsup wasn't needed but used. SERVICE While in Stowaway, we informed our male server to let us know when we were allowed to enter the belly. Once inside and situated, we had the place and bartender to ourselves. After we all perused the menu, we placed our orders, and everything arrived within ten minutes. The rest of the time was spent chatting, picture taking, and our bartender checked in on us also giving a Dole Whip taster. All was casual, chill, and somewhat on island time - aloha and mahalo! PARKING (FREE): They shared a medium-sized private lot with several other businesses who were closed at this time with plenty of spots - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE "Hidden" inside Stowaway which was located within a strip mall, the entire theme was based on the Pinocchio story, the interlude in time spent inside Monstro, and as we entered it felt like the beginning of the Disneyland "Storybook" ride as you road a canal boat into the mouth and sharp teet of a whale. There were several marionettes (appropriate and non-appropriate) that hung from the ceiling and belly walls, along with other Disneyesque memorabilia, a few sitting booths, and a tiny bar at the end of the roo. No natural lighting whatsoever while an assortment of extremely low-lit electric lights and table candles glowed. There were no TVs while I couldn't recall any background music. ATTIRE Although I was actually dressed appropriately for the occasion in an aloha shirt, linen pants, and flip-flops, this place was totally casual, so a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops would suffice. OVERALL Belly Of The Beast was an adventurous fun evening with friends, it left me feeling childlike with the need to watch "Pinocchio", and I couldn't wait to return to try more of their awesome-soundling elixirs. I generally loved all-things Disneyana, and this new wrinkle, albeit probably not approved by the mouse ears brass, caught my fancy. My one drink was tasty but just didn't hit the right spot, the onion rings were very good, the prices were a tad elevated, the atmosphere was awesome, and the service was friendly and professional. They had an extremely limited menu, and there was some doubt whether or not ordering from the Stowaway menu was an option. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $27.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip).
