I have lived in the Pittsburgh Area for 22 years and Rolands has the best sauce, handmade pasta and hand crafted dishs that are second to none in the area. The service is like visiting your Italian great Auntie; friendly and fun. But, you go there for the food. Just be careful about ordering the large portions unless you are very hungry or you want to take some home for the next meal of two. The ambiance is a little rustic but, you go there for the food. Roland's Trattoria is a local, family-owned restaurant that serves made-from-scratch Italian foods for lunch and dinner for dining in and takeout. My husband and I ate one lunch here. We arrived at 11:30 AM, and the door was locked, but thankfully an employee noticed us and unlocked the door. Another customer told us that the building used to be a coalmine store. I noticed that the interior looked rustic, with exposed brick and crooked floors. The women's bathroom was clean. The employee provided very courteous service. The menu listed appetizers (e.g., fried provolone and calamari), salads, sandwiches, mains (e.g., pastas, veal parmesan, and chicken picatta), and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Here are my ratings for what we ordered: Small chicken parmesan - 4 stars - The small size was actually pretty big a definitely enough for one person to eat. The chicken, sauce, and cheese tasted very good, but I prefer crispier breading. Meatball sandwich - 3 stars - My husband ate this sandwich. He said that the meatballs tasted "interesting" and that the bread could have more flavor. I thought that it tasted alright. Caesar salad - 4 stars - This side salad consisted of lettuce, cheeses, just-made croutons, and a side dressing. My friend and I were driving back from Ohio to Brooklyn, NY and needed a place to stop for lunch. We are so glad we chose Roland's!! Everything was absolutely delicious. We had a salad, Roland's Pasta, garlic bread, and Chicken Milanese. The flavors were amazing and the price is incredibly fair. At the end of the meal we got to try a slice of the family recipe cheesecake- WOW! We had the original flavor but they also had a salted caramel pretzel and a pumpkin swirl flavor. Love this place! The parking lot is a little rough but other than that this place is top notch. We stopped by for dinner after graduation and were not disappointed. We were asked if we had a reservation when we arrived. We didn't and were seated right away. The building itself is old but has lots of charm. Our waiter was friendly and attentive throughout our time there. The menus were sheets of paper put onto a clipboard which was a first for me. The food was delicious! I was really disappointed in our experience. We stopped in a little after 4pm. It wasn't real busy. We gave our waitress our order right away. The waitress was checking in about every 15 minutes. After about 1/2 hour it had picked up and we noticed people getting bread. So we asked about it and was told you had to order it so we did. It was a good thing because it was another 1/2 hour before we got our food. Other diners had eaten and left. When we got ours my husband's was real hot and the scampi was not very flavorful. Family owned and operated Italian eatery in Washington PA.  They take pride in the high-quality food they serve that is prepped from scratch and always made to order.  Located in an old building but has a ton of charm and the food is incredible.  They do take reservations, but walk-ins are welcome.  They seem to do a lot of takeout business as well as dine in.  Most menu items come in a small or large option which is perfect depending your party size!!! While there, tried the house bread which came out warm, the fried zucchini which has made my top five favorite list- perfectly breaded and fried, the stuffed hot banana peppers came out bubbling and were so delicious. For our meal we split the hot sausage hoagie, that was covered in their pasta Roland sauce, peppers and onions - all sandwiches come with a side, their garlic Parmesan fries are unreal! Also had their chicken Romano, for that side we did linguini pasta with Alfredo! The Romano was different but very good- mostly breaded with egg, not breading but really tasty. WOW, where do I begin?! Wish I could give a six star review. I can't say enough good things about Roland's! I only ate here a handful of times before they closed down a few years ago. I think it was during covid that they opened back up doing takeout only, and recently they've expanded to in person dining again. I ate here a few months ago with a large party and we all shared everything family style. Everything was absolutely fantastic- from the bread, to the salad, to the pastas, and the dinner entrees of chicken and eggplant parm. I never eat marinara pasta out at restaurants (I'm biased that my dad makes the best spaghetti) but I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious their classic spaghetti was- would definitely order again and that is unheard of for me. Service was top-notch. They had a small cocktail menu, so I ordered the only drink with gin: the gin jam. Y'ALL, this might be the best specialty cocktail I've ever had at a restaurant. Like seriously. My friend also had a margarita I tried that was also amazing. I recently got takeout of the chicken romano and the alfredo. HOLY COW. This is the BEST alfredo I've ever had, no contest. I'm usually not an alfredo fan either; if I order pasta out I typically like a pesto or olive oil sauce. The chicken romano is out of this world. Their fried zucchini is also so good- you can tell it's homemade; it tastes like zucchini my grandma made me for me as a little kid. I literally cannot rave enough about Roland's. So the goddess, dowager goddess, and I were back in our old haunt (South Hills PGH) for a weekend visit with friends. We were too tired to go see the Washington Wild Things game, but we weren't too tired to have some authentic Italian-American fare. Roland's was 15 min away, so why not? Beers were reasonable. The stuffed peppers were almost too spicy, which is how we like them. Sauce had a bit more oregano than I prefer, but it was still nice. Fried zucchini was thin and crispy and hot. Yummy! Goddess and the Dowager had pasta Roalnd. Spicy but not overwhelming. Solid. I had the homemade gnocchi con basil in a lemon crème sauce. The gnocchi were fluffy and airy. Not as amazing as my late friend Claudio's, but damned good. Now I'm stuffed and can't eat another bite. Even if the zucchini were wafer thin. read more

After reading all of the 5 star reviews, I could not wait to try out Roland's for the first time! I was really wanting that 5 star experience, but a few different things were lacking... Ambiance/Decor: 1/5 First off, the parking lot is super small, pot holes everywhere, and overgrown with weeds and grass. The inside's decor is outdated and lacking. I don't think this space was built to be a restaurant. It looks like it used to a social hall of some sort. The ceilings are super high, everything echos, and the noise is LOUD. There is a random gigantic bar that is not being utilized. There was also a stage inside lol. Service: 2/5 My husband and I had a 6:30 reservation on a Saturday night. We arrived at 6:20, walked around the restaurant because we couldn't find a worker. We noticed that the dining room was completely empty (maybe 1-2 tables of people). We finally found the hostess, and she told us she will not seat us until 6:30, and to have a seat and join the other 4 parties who also were waiting to be seated for their 6:30 reservation! I thought it was SO weird! I felt like I was on a cruise ship and wasn't allowed to enter the dining room until my scheduled dinner time. SO STRANGE! At 6:30, we all shuffled in like cattle and sat in the big empty space. There was TWO servers working TOTAL. Two people working the dinner shift on a Saturday night?? Come on... It took a while for our waitress to come over. I think seating people as they come in would help this problem??? Once we met her, she was very sweet and kind. The two waitress were running their asses off all night. We tipped her well because she was really working hard. Food: 5/5 The food at Roland's gets a solid 5 stars. EVERYTHING is home made, including the fresh bread that they bring with your drinks. We got the fried provolone wheels appetizer and it was delicious, and could easily feed 3-4 people. The portions were huge. My husband got the rigatoni with meat balls (the meatballs were pretty small) and I got the veal parm. The veal was so big it was hanging over my plate. We both had left overs to take home. The Roland's sauce was delicious. All home made and definitely has that "like Grandma used to make" taste to it. They don't even bread the veal/chicken until you order it. All of the desserts are made from scratch as well. We got a slice of the snickers cheese cake to take home. This is a no frills in appearance place but the food is very good. Large portions...seriously plan on splitting or taking home at least another meals worth! Our waitress (Candy) was awesome! She had a great attitude and was a bit entertaining! We started with the fried provolone. It was two thick slabs of deep fried, breaded provolone with marinara on the side. There were 4 of us and each couple split the chicken Parmesan. It came with 2 sides. We still took home doggy bags. I highly recommend this place! The best non-national chain restaurant I've been to in Washington, PA. I had the veal parm and it was not a glued together (mcnugget style) amalgam of "meat" ... rather it was a nicely tenderized, moderately thin whole veal cutlet, perfectly fried and topped with mozzarella, Parmesan and a well-reduced, flavorful marinara sauce. Old school, but very good. My husband enjoyed his linguine with Roland's sauce -- which seemed to be a version of the marinara with some peppers and other veggies. Again, old school, but good. My entree came with a choice of pasta or baked potato -- I ordered the latter, and should have ordered the former as the potato comes with no condiments (just a naked baked tater) ... not even sour cream ... so I left that behind. The salad came family style -- we were a party of 12 ... and had mostly iceberg lettuce (would have been nice to have had some better lettuce mixed in -- say some romaine and red leaf lettuce) which was crisp and the salad had red onions, pear tomatoes, black olives, and pepperoncini. The dressings in our instance were served on the side ... No ordered dessert, the portions are obscenely large ... really enough to feed 3 people comfortably. The ambiance is severely lacking ... in fact, the room we were in had portions of the inside of the exterior wall falling apart and an overhead beam missing a section with twisted metal and innards exposed. The wine list is poor. I had a nice "Flaming River" pale ale from Cleveland ... an homage to the Cuyahoga River ... which at one point I believe rivaled a river in my neck of the woods, the Duwamish, for being one of the most polluted rivers in the county, although I don't think the Duwamish actually ever caught fire ... read more

I am giving 4 stars because my salad was not fresh. The server should have noticed that....not Roland ' s fault. The Roland sauce is some of the best pasta sauce I have ever eaten. It consistently tastes the same and it has that slow simmered taste. The pizza is delicious with homemade crunchy crust. Our server was very nice but missed the fact that the salad was not fresh. Our first visit to Roland's June 17. It will be our last. Service was exceptionally slow. Everything including water took 10 minutes or better to arrive. Food was only acceptable. My husband even found a hair in his French fries. Our waitress was new and the management had her working all over the room. She was simply overwhelmed and only one other waitress was trying to help even though her shift had ended. One well experienced waitress simply laughed and Made rude comments about the young girl. I believe there was a deliberate effort to overwhelm this young woman. As we were leaving I asked to speak to the manager in private and did so. I spoke to him about the slow service and that as a manager they were responsible for seeing that their employees were trained properly and had enough time in training to be able to handle working all over the room. This young woman was trying to cover all they had assigned her. I also mentioned to him that my husband had found a hair but was not making an issue. The answer I received to all of this was an insincere "I am sorry for your poor experience". We had no expectation of any gratuitous treatment other than management simply caring that we had an opinion. read more

The restaurant has reopened for in-person dining as of March 1, 2022 after a multi-year hiatus during the coronavirus pandemic in which it offered only take-out options. I was surprised to see very few cars in the parking lot. I soon discovered why: it appears that only the bar area and four tables by the entrance are being utilized at this time. If atmosphere is of no importance to the diner, this may be a restaurant that suits you. It is old and plain. The room that is currently being used for seating has poor acoustics: it is loud even with no more than 20 people in it. It was extremely bright, too much light for a Saturday evening dinner. The chairs are stiff an uncomfortable. The napkins are paper and there are no tablecloths, only a sheet of paper covering the tables. The staff is dressed casually: no uniforms or nametags, and the server did not identify herself. The food is generally excellent and the portions are big. The menu is a few small pages with a limited selection. I like that many dishes are available in a variety of sizes and priced accordingly. Beware, though, that everything is a la carte, at least for now. Bread or bread rolls are $2 and dipping oil is an additional $2. Side dishes range from $3 for potatoes to $5 for pasta. There are no draft beers at this time. Bottled beers are priced fairly, beginning at $3 for Yuengling. My party of two ordered bread rolls and butter, fried zucchini, linguine alfredo, and chicken parmigiana. The owner or manager was apparently present, but he did not come to the table to greet us or to perform a quality check. Our meal was $48+ plus gratuity, about what I would have paid at a number of fine restaurants that are closer to my home. The diner check reflects a different era. Items and prices are written on it by hand. When it is presented for payment, there is a total on the back, a tip line, and a line for the diner's signature. The server returns the credit card with no credit card receipt or detailed item receipt. The best thing about our meal was our server, who was a delight from start to finish: gracious, kind, friendly, efficient, and attentive.
