Really cute cozy neighbourhood Italian place. Wonderful service from Felipa out on the patio, which felt like I was sitting on a friends fairy-lit back porch!! The nicely weighted Primitivo went well with each course. The table enjoyed the Arancini, Caesar salad, Cacio E Pepe, Rigatoni Pesto, spaghetti Tartufo and Tiramisu. Roma is one of my favorite places to go and bring friends/family for a nice meal since moving to Houston. This was my first time sitting inside and it was decorated so well and the ambiance was very relaxing. We both got a glass of their house pinot grigio, shared the arancini, and got the ravioli di gamberi as our mains. Everything tasted amazing as always. My waiter was very attentive, kind, and everything came out perfectly timed. One of my favorite things about Roma is this was my fourth time coming and every time there's always new changes to the menu. I booked Roma for an early Saturday dinner on their covered outdoor patio. We parked at the free 2 hour parking garage across the street. When we arrived, our waitress was wearing a mask and gloves and kept them on the entire time, which was great. We started with their fried calamari and shrimp appetizer. It was lightly battered and slightly crispy. I preferred the calamari over the shrimp because it tasted sweeter and fresher. We also tried their complimentary olive bread with olive oil dipping mixture, which was amazing. Each slice of bread had pieces of olives in them and the olive oil mixture was really fragrant when dipped with the bread. So good. For the entrees, we ordered the veal scaloppine and spinach and ricotta ravioli. The veal dish was just ok. It was four thin veal pieces along with some grilled asparagus and artichoke. While it was seasoned well, it just wasn't very satisfying to me. On the other hand, I loved the ravioli. It was also seasoned very well. The sauce was creamy and brimming with truffle flavor. The ravioli was nicely al dente and filled with ricotta cheese. There was a plethora of fragrant mushrooms and meaty Italian sausages throughout this dish. Taken altogether, this dish was bomb. Get this dish! Finally, for dessert, we had to order their tiramisu and affogato. While the tiramisu was just alright, the affogato was the best I've had in a while. The tiramisu didn't have enough mascarpone cheese, lady fingers/cake, or espresso. I did taste a strong hand of cocoa powder on top of the tiramisu. On the other hand, the affogato had a lovely bed of vanilla ice cream and amaretto biscottis showered over with a beautiful, smooth espresso. We ate every bite of it. If you're a coffee lover, get the affogato! It's the most deceptively simple, but absolutely amazing dessert ever. By the time we were done with our early dinner, other diners started showing up to sit on the patio as well. We quickly placed our masks back on and left. It was perfect timing, since we walked around the area to enjoy the holiday lights. Overall, this is a great spot to enjoy good food and celebrate a special occasion. It might be a bit expensive to eat dinner here on a regular basis. I'd recommend coming for an early dinner on a weeknight on their outdoor patio. Come check them out. read more

We went last year for dinner and they ran out of Turkey. Instead of the owner/manager being apologetic, he had an attitude. Never again. If you are looking for Turkey, I would suggest calling ahead. I recently visited with my boyfriend and we had such an amazing experience at Roma. Starting off, the building itself and the inside structure is so unique in a positive way. It is cozy and comfortable with dim lighting that complements the big window in the back that shows Rice Village. I've never seen anything like it and loved how we were seated right next to the window. There are multiple rooms in this restaurant and gives off an authentic vibe with how homey it is. Next, the host was very quick to seat us and bring us bread as well as take our orders. The bread was SO good. I'm not sure if it was the olive oil mix that came with the bread or the bread itself (or probably the mixture of both), but it tasted so good. I could not stop eating it. The host/server was very nice and checked in with us frequently, asking if we liked the first bite after each dish and gave us a chance to let him know if anything was wrong. I absolutely loved this about the restaurant and how helpful everyone was. I ordered a glass of the Sauvignon Blanc they had on the wine menu and it was amazing--super smooth, yet refreshing and light. We ordered a Caesar salad to share and it was fresh and tasted great. I ordered the Bolognese with meatballs for my entree while my boyfriend ordered the veal shank with asparagus and roasted potatoes. My pasta was so good, it has officially become one of my top favorite pastas I've ever had. I couldn't finish all of it and ate the leftovers/to-go for breakfast the next day. Lastly, I got the chocolate cannolis for dessert and my boyfriend got the limoncello drink. My cannolis were amazing--fresh, had chocolate chips in it, and the contrast between the crunchy and the creamy was so tasty. My boyfriend loved his limoncello. The owner, Shanon Scott, was also SO nice and amazing to us. He checked in with us and made sure we were happy with our experience. The waiters and hostess were all wearing masks and gloves and were very careful when delivering food, refilling drinks and collecting plates. We were sat outside with at least one empty table between other diners. This attempt must have been thrown out the window when more diners appeared and they started seating the empty tables. We mentioned it but were told the dining areas were getting full... so? Turn people away then. Had we not been in the middle of our meals, we likely would have left. We were at the corner of the area with just one table near us, so we finished and paid for our meal and left. Parking is plentiful and free so that's nice. The food: Spinach ricotta ravioli with mushrooms - amazing. Maybe needed a bit more salt but the flavors and textures were on point. Smoked gnocchi with shrimp - cooked perfectly but sauce was a bit too cheesy Burrata Salad - very nice and well presented Grilled octopus - cooked well but under-flavored. The sides were either dry or under flavored. Seafood soup - not bad but not mind blowing The portions were huge so definitely share. Underwhelmed. I visited this restaurant for a business dinner. PARKING Nonexistent. Street parking or a disappearing valet. When I arrived I first pulled into the lot adjacent to Roma belonging to a coffee shop and Celebrity Cupcakes. I quickly realized by the tow signs that this lot is not permitted for Roma. I worked my way back to the restaurant and ended up at the bank across the street. I saw a man moving a cone and parking a car but I thought it was his car and he just didn't want to be bothered by looking for a parking spot. I realized later after asking the restaurant host on check in about parking that valet is offered and I presumed the guy I saw was valet. However it is sketchy because he didn't wear a uniform and I didn't see a sign at bank area or in front of Roma advertising said valet. A person in my party told me that she parked at the garage. So there is a garage available I just didn't see it. I self-parked behind the bank, no orange cones and I could tell others were self-parking there and along the fence. SERVICE Aside from the host I didn't care for the waiter. He wasn't rude but just inattentive. We had to flag him down multiple times for forgotten items. We had to ask four times for bread. The first three times to remind him and the fourth time because he brought the wrong bread. We wanted the rolls with the cheese on top. It is sooo good and so is the garlic olive oil accompaniment. I had requested an amaretto sour and he was like what is that. I asked if the bar makes custom drinks aside from their bar menu and he said no. That was surprising. The water had a funny taste to it and when I ordered Sprite (another item I had to ask for repeatedly) it was flat and not sweet. I actually thought it was water when he brought it. FOOD I liked what I ordered for the most part. Would I write home about it. No. Of the two food items I ordered I enjoyed the appetizer more than the entree. I ordered the fried shrimp, fried artichoke and something else was fried in this appetizer but I forgot. I think it was fried calamari. It was good. Fried well, with a light but well seasoned batter. For entree I ordered the cacio e Pepe which was good. I've had cacio e Pepe at another Italian restaurant before and did not like it because of how strong and overwhelming the cheese they used was. I ordered it here because it was the only option I really cared to order. The other people in my party had received their orders and I didn't care for how they looked. They also didn't seem thrilled with their orders after the first couple of bites. I enjoyed the presentation of the cacio e Pepe. They serve it tableside. Do NOT get the chicken accompaniment. It is grilled and overcooked. No flavor either. I wish I got the lobster or shrimp instead. The sauce was a little runny. When the waiter transferred the pasta from the cheese wheel to my plate I noticed the sauce dripping like a soup. I like a thicker pasta sauce. Flavor was just OK. Again nothing to write home about. Would I return? No. If I was to ever return it would be for that fried shrimp and calamari appetizer only and to get to this part of town which is congested due to being surrounded by all the shops and limited parking isn't worth it. read more

I've been here 3 times and sadly my last two visits have been awful. First visit - amazing service, food, etc. Everything was perfect. I thought "wow I found a great Italian restaurant with a beautiful outside dining setting" Second visit - worst service I've ever had in my life at any restaurant. No bread was put on the table until I was almost done with my meal. The martinis that were ordered shortly after sitting down came out AFTER the food. They were also almost undrinkable they were so bad. They had the balls to still charge for them even though they came out after the meal. No apologies from them for anything. The food itself was still great so I thought "I'll give this place another try" Third and final visit - they've revised the menu removing things like the flatbread pizzas. Service was better but still had to ask them to bring bread (this is an Italian restaurant - what is wrong with you people?). Calamari had more artichoke pieces than seafood. I've given this place enough chances and now I'm done. I much prefer Rivas in Montrose. It's not fine dining but the atmosphere is really cool, prices are great and service is super attentive. read more

I made a reservation at Roma for a special dinner with 7 other family members who were in town during the holidays. The situation as far as noise level was concerned was fine. We were able to talk and visit just fine. The service was also good. However, the food was an embarrassment for me, as I had chosen the restaurant. One of my sons ordered a lamb shank, and it was so tough that he sent back his dinner. His wife ordered chicken, and it was also tough. I had the cacio e pepe, one of my favorite dishes, and it was unrecognizable. It was made with wide, flat noodles and had some kind of bland sauce all over it. I knew about these problems with the food because the people were sitting near me. I didn't even want to ask the other people about their dinners because I was so embarrassed and afraid of the answers. When I reported these issues to the owner in a text, he said he would ask his staff about it, but I never heard anything back. When I texted him again, he said his staff was unaware of any issues that night -- when my son literally sent back his dinner! He also said that I should have alerted him to the issues that night, which I would not have done because it would have created a very uncomfortable situation when I wanted to have a happy dinner with my family. There was never any offer of compensation for our very bad experience with the food. Due to bad food and unsatisfactory customer service, I could never recommend Roma. read more

My friend has been raving about Roma for some time now and I've been meaning to come check it out. I liked it when it was Sud Italia but they revamped their menu about 6 months ago and I hadn't found time to try it until now. We came on a Saturday evening without reservations and there were plenty of tables available, especially in the back room! I don't believe they've changed much in decor/design since Sud's but the menu is indeed different. It's become a tad simpler? If I can say that for a lack of a better word - they have appetizers, pastas, fish and meat! Easy peasy! I've heard a lot about their homemade pastas so it was definitely a must try! We ordered the Meatballs with Mozzarella, Basil and Pecorino over Marinara - these were a bit tough but had good flavors. I think it was a bit on the salty side but it was fine with the complimentary bread! 3/5 Fettuccine alla Bolognese - my friend was right, the noodles were delicious! Fresh noodles, cooked perfectly al dente with the perfect bite! I haven't had noodles done right like this since Italy! Yum! I liked the Bolognese as well - good flavors! Probably my favorite dish of the night and the one my friend keeps coming back for! 5/5 Gnocchi Affumicati allo Zafferano e Gamberi aka Smoked Gnocchi with Shrimp in a Saffron Sauce - I couldn't decide what to think of this dish - the flavors were so interesting! It was indeed smokey.. like really smokey.. and the sauce was rich and creamy! The gnocchi again was made and cooked well - perfectly if you ask me! The sauce I was on the fence about - I think it's an acquired taste, you either love it or you hate it. I personally liked it, but I don't think I can eat a whole plate of it without something else to cut the richness and the flavor. It was too much on its own. 4/5 Tiramisu - I normally like the "cake"/lady fingers part of a tiramisu the best but this one was made with real mascarpone - none of that fake whip cream stuff. It was delicious! It was smooth, the flavors were spot on, it was light and airy! I love coffee desserts and this one hit the spot! 5/5 Great addition to the Rice Village area! I've been having a hard time finding an Italian place in Houston that makes pasta just like the ones I had in Italy. Roma is a relatively new* Italian restaurant in Rice Village. It used to be Sud Italia before they rebranded or changed ownership. There's a parking garage close by with complimentary two-hour parking. With a name like Roma, the restaurant focuses on South Italian fare though you'll see a lot of usual suspects. I've now visited twice--once for happy hour and once for lunch during Houston Restaurant Weeks. During my happy hour visit, we sat at the bar. I had a glass of prosecco and the arancini appetizer (which has a different name on the menu and tastes a little different than your typical arancini. They also served us some complimentary bread and oil. During HRW, I started with the fried cheese which is always a good choice. From there, I had the pasta bolognese--a classic pasta dish with meat sauce. My dining partner had the pasta carbonara--another classic dish which I got to sample. Both were good but I preferred the pasta carbonara. We rounded things out with the tiramisu which is my favorite dessert. The waiter sold us on the dessert as it's the chef's grandma's recipe. It was delicious but a relatively small portion size as it was served in a glass. Service was pretty good both times and I like the ambiance here. It makes for a nice date spot and you can walk around Rice Village afterward. I wasn't on a date on either occasion but I look out for my fellow Yelpers! Roma is a nice authentic Italian spot in the rice village. Quaint house turned restaurant, the ambiance is comfortable and food pretty good. We really liked the Polpette Di Manzo meatball appetizer. Unfortunately this was the only meat dish we ordered where the meat wasn't obnoxiously salty. The pasta in the spaghetti carbonara was great but we couldn't eat the Guanciale bacon - way too salty. The truffle spinach ricotta ravioli was AMAZING, and I WILL order it again, except with no sausage because again, it was too salty. As for the Salmon, man was that delicious and we inhaled the cabbage that came with it. Tiramisu for dessert took us back to our days in Italy - so creamy and delicious. Just took a while to come and had to eventually ask the server if they put our order in. My friend and I sat on the patio, and enjoyed what felt like going out to eat at a trattoria back in Italy. The food is absolute fire - best Italian I've found in the city. I got the Bucatini Amatriciana, and my friend got the Osso Bucco. Both were amazing in their own right - perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and used top quality ingredients to truly bring out the best possible flavors in the dish. Let me preface this by saying, I didn't know what to expect before going into Roma. Reviews were all good, but given location (I have seen so many restaurants cycle through this location over the years) my expectations were low. I am happy to say that our experience was overwhelmingly positive, and I won't be surprised if Roma succeeds in Rice Village as a new staple. From the wines, to the service, to the food - everything was perfection. We started with the burrata cheese with blood orange fruit and prosciutto, which was too delicious for me to remember to take a photo of before gobbling it down. What a creative and inspired combination of flavors! I also had a Prosecco (using my yelp check in deal), and my husband had the house red, which were both great (coming from borderline wine snobs). For dinner I had the spinach and ricotta cheese filled ravioli topped with truffle, mushroom and italian sausage. It was A-MAZING and very very rich. Very creamy, heavy on the truffle, and a bit salty - which are three of my favorite things. My husband definitely had food envy of my ravioli, but his fettuccine alla bolognese was also very good (and I'm typically not a bolognese person). For dessert he had the homemade limoncello, I had a latte, and we shared the cannolis, which were a perfect way to end the meal. By the end we were certainly full, but not leaving 'roll-me-out-in-a-wheelbarrow' stuffed. All together our meal was around $95, including an appetizer, two entrees, two glasses of wine (and a free Prosecco), a latte, a limoncello, and a dessert. Really quite affordable for all we got. I can't finish review without commenting on the wonderful ambiance and service. We sat on the patio in the perfect evening air and watched people go by into rice village. No car fumes, and the greenery felt very relaxing. Our waiter (?also owner?) was Italian and very very friendly. We would def go back just for the service and atmosphere, but it helps that the food was also phenomenal. Roma will now be my new go-to Italian restaurant. read more

Portions European so price matched serving and we could have bread, appetizer, and main and end with an amazing dessert without feeling overstuffed and costing a bunch. Dessert I asked for a recommendation tiramisu or the panacotta..... I dunno what do you suggest. Titamisu. Ok but I don't see panacotta often..... ok tiramisu. It was delicious and not huge. I left satisfied but not overstuffed and my wallet wasn't decimated. All I can say from first visit on a slower night. Authentic, friendly, cost is low- especially this area. We will be back. We recently tried Roma again after a few years and it is MUCH improved!!! I am not sure if it is even the same management or owners but it is like a different restaurant. Roma was on my list for quite some time and finally had a chance to try it! Very nice experience. Service was great and the food was on point. I'd been craving pasta carbonara and Roma's didn't disappoint. We tried some apps (meatballs, fried seafood, and octopus salad) and they were all delicious. Wine choices were very good as well and fair prices. Fun fact... they have a dinner special every Thursday where you get two meals (multiple courses) and three bottles of wine for only $119. You can tell your server you'd like to sign up using your phone number and they'll text you a special menu each week. I haven't done it yet but planning to in the near future!! read more

Impressed! Celebrated my husbands birthday and we wanted nice, but casual, and above all, GOOD FOOD! This was everything! Large and well seasoned Caesar salad. Tender, but not chewy octopus app. Delicious pastas: both the carbonara and squid ink spaghetti were amazing! No pics of pasta because we ate it too fast! They gave us complimentary tiramisu as well. Minus one star for two small things. Service was a bit slow, which was ok because we took our time enjoying the food, but it took forever to get the check at the end. And we were seated in the back room, which had very little ambiance, but next time I'll just request front room or outside, which were both really cute areas. Will definitely be back! read more
