2/1/2018: If you live in northern Virginia and need roof work, look no further than Roof dot net. Finding a good contractor can be a difficult and frustrating process. All we want is someone we can trust to do quality work, however it's rarely that easy. When we learned that we needed a new roof and some leak repairs, the thought of choosing the wrong contractor was terrifying. After all, roofs are very expensive and you need them to protect your home for decades. I figured we were in for weeks of contractor research, meetings, estimates, analysis, etc. Luckily for us, in my online research of best roofing contractors in northern VA, I stumbled across Roof dot net. I had never heard of them, but astonishingly they had all 5 star reviews! Everywhere! Thousands of them! I had never seen a company this highly rated by this many people. I watched an independent review of the company that found them to be perhaps the best-reviewed small business in America. I didn't need further convincing and called them to schedule an inspection. The owner Ken impressed us from the moment we met him. He doesn't use fear tactics or slick sales tricks like some others do. Refreshingly, he genuinely cares about his customer's needs and provides an honest and fair estimate using only high quality materials and workmanship. We knew right away this was our guy. Rarely can you work directly with a company owner. But that's how Ken operates. He is the only person we dealt with from start to finish and promptly returned all calls and emails. There's no middle man, nothing is lost in translation, and he keeps his promises. It's no wonder how he keeps his customers so happy, he simply provides outstanding customer service. As far as the roof work, we had absolute confidence in Roof dot net and they absolutely delivered! We have a fairly large roof and they were able to complete the job in just one day. All the materials were delivered the day before, on the roof! A crew of about ten worked like a well-oiled machine to remove the old roof, install the new roof, and fix two leaky dormers. They cleaned up so well it was as if they were never there. Roof dot net clearly knows what they're doing. Ken also provided us lots of photos of the work in progress so we could see with our own eyes the work that was done. We couldn't be happier with the work. I rarely write reviews for anyone. But since I didn't have to waste hours/days dealing with issues after the repairs, I had plenty of time to write a well-deserved positive review! Let us start out with saying it is rare to call a business and be able reach a real, live, human being without being routed around 'departments' as many businesses do in an off-putting attempt to wow the potential customer making it sound like a huge and pretentious operation; but in this case, you will reach Ken (the owner) directly. That is the first step in customer service. In calling Ken, he made a visit to the home the same day. In fact, in texting the address to him (twice), there seems to be an oddity where all other phones work, but mine goes directly to voicemail and he doesn't receive my messages. The result is he didn't have my info to visit the home in the 10 to 11am window he defined. I called Ken at 11:30 to ask if something went wrong or changed unexpectedly. His response was an unequivocal "you didn't send me your contact information as you said you would!" At any rate, despite driving, he pulled over to record my contact and location info and found another slot in his schedule that day... between 1 and 1:30 PM. This is when the two of us were able to hash out something funny was going on with our phones... as if I am a blocked number. When Ken arrived, he was able to identify the brand, color style, and model of shingle on the home right off the bat. Additionally, he could do the same with the different roof vents on the home. This certainly gave a sense of validation on the many years of experience he has with roofing. The call was originally for a leak occurrence that suddenly developed after a heavy thunderstorm (not wind or hail related), large enough to coat part of the west wall of the office by a stream of water running down the vaulted ceiling from the point of entry of the decking intrusion point. At any rate, Ken's crew was at the house the day I approved the work to repair the leak, but we talked about the chimney flashing causing seepage, painting the furnace stack pipe, and installing another vent for a non-existent bathroom fan in the process. The crew was efficient, skilled, and was flexible in that they do not need to be hounded by the homeowner like some work crews do. However, if you are a homeowner who happens to be around (I was on the day of the work), the crew took the few minutes to walk me through their steps forward and ensure everyone is comfortable and on the same page. Note, the bathroom fan vent was beyond the original statement of work, but Ken had no problem tasking this after the fact. In fact, I asked Ken to give an approximation on roof lifecycle expectancy and provide a quote on replacement based upon current market research analysis for reference to budget a plan for this going forward as well. The first heavy rain after the fix was this past weekend and the issues are definitely archived in the roof leak history book. I am happy with the outcome, the innate details provided in the estimate/contract write-up -- to know exactly what you are getting and paying for -- and the responsiveness of Ken and his team. [update] My wife was worried after a roofing company knocked on our house and said he was in the neighborhood and saw that our house needed repairs. I told her that they were likely trying to scam us but she wanted a professional opinion. I called Ken and the same day, he came over and reassured my wife that our roof was perfectly fine. I showed my wife his awards and she was utterly convinced that our roof was perfectly fine. I am again grateful for Ken giving my wife and I peace of mind with our roof. [original review] I am extremely grateful Roof.net told me my roof did not need repair or replacement. They saved me a ton of money upfront and potentially more down the road. The two contractors who visited told me I needed to have my raised shingles corrected. One said they would have to lift up the shingles to see where there were issues and flatten out the shingles. Another advised me to replace the roof because it was getting old (I just recently purchased the house). I sent pictures to Roof.net who immediately called and told me what was going on and why I didn't need their services or the services of any others. They said the raised shingles are fairly common against sidings and it is called "step flashing". They explained how raised shingles is almost a good sign because it means nails were placed in the proper place. Had I not reached out to Roof.net, I would have had work down that I didn't need to have done, and avoided any problems in the future done by shoddy work that I didn't need anyway. I contacted Ken from Roof.net in mid-February. I woke up on 2/15/19 and saw a single shingle laying on our back deck. We had some strong winds the night before so I assumed it was blown off from that. However, this was the third shingle I have seen in the last 8 months and was concerned that there might be an issue with the roof. I live in a townhome where getting a clear visual of the roof, particularly in the back of the house, is quite difficult. I did a quick search on yelp that morning and Roof.net was first in line. I gave the phone number a call and to my surprise the owner (Ken) answered. I explained the situation and Ken said he would be out later that day to get a better idea of what was going on. Ken came out around lunch time and took a look with his camera that can zoom in with great detail. He noted that the roof looked okay, but there were a few spots that needed some minor repairs. He also said the roof looked like it was the original (25+ years old) and that he would recommend that I get the roof replaced in the next year or two, but didn't push me in getting it done immediately. Just a very honest assessment. He said he would work up a full proposal for a roof replacement so my wife and I could begin budgeting for it, but also sent out one of his men that afternoon to take care of the minor repairs and confirm everything that Ken thought was an issue with the roof. I had received services from Ken in Oct 2015, and I had to call him for a new concern. I was utterly amazed and grateful that as an existing customer, Ken's character and professionalism had not changed. He's still professional, prompt, courteous, and skillful. This time I was able to also witness his integrity. I can't say enough good about Ken and would highly recommend his company. I called him because I have a bulge in my roof which I thought was a result of a leak. Ken quickly scheduled me, followed through with the appointment, and showed up ready for the job. I expressed my concerns and all the while, he was attentively listening. After hearing me, he reflected back what he heard and then made his way to inspect the situation. Ken, using SKILL and KNOWLEDGE, assessed my roof's plywood durability with pulsating body pressure (very slightly bouncing on the roof), which he determined to be solid--in other words, no leak! He let me know the slight bulge is structural and that no work is needed. He also looked at other areas of my roof as he patiently answered additional questions I had and finalized that my roof was good. He could have easily told me something was wrong and require unnecessary work, but he didn't...and get this...he wasn't disappointed about that either. Ken and his team were professional, very responsive, and efficient. We called Ken around 0915 on a Saturday, he was at our house by 1050. After a brief discussion, and looking at the damage to the paint and drywall on the ceiling and wall in the master bathroom, he went outside to asses the situation. When he returned, he provided photos and a plausible explanation for the leak. The two likely culprits were the areas around the exhaust fan vent and the plumbing vent. He said typically it's a flashing issue, whether the pipes and vents are not sealed properly when installed, or nails are set through the flashing to secure it to the roof. Additionally, based on the low grade of the roof, water could be flowing down to this area from higher up, so his crew would check that out as well, by prying back some tiles further up, and looking along the ridge of the roof (under the cap). The team came out about an hour later, went straight to work and discovered there had been no protection whatsoever added to the roof around the two vents. They laid down an adhesive, then a protective matting before replacing the roofing tiles. The guys also looked under the ridge cap and thankfully that was okay. They made short work of it, and came back to show me the before and after photos they'd taken of the work area. It's been two weeks, we've had a few more rain storms roll through, and no leaks. Don't look any further and save yourself some time. Ken and his team are the best there is. My neighbor and I just replaced both our roofs together today and we couldn't be happier. I had 10+ companies coming for on-site visits before I decided to go with Roof.net. They have the lowest price without any sales BS. I had a couple local companies trying to convince me to replace all plywood etc for $10,000+ and I got it done for less than half of that! It can be really confusing until you get someone knowledgable like Ken to explain to you what is what in layman's terms. Turns out - I barely need to have any plywood replaced afterall. They did our roof job using CertainTeed landmark architecture pro shingle, which is a good product that stands 120 miles/hour wind. He even helped me to get my neighbor on board with the gutter installation so we can get the shared gutter replaced together. MUST READ!...My elderly mother in VA had a roof leak and I called Ken from Roof.net from my residence in Nevada trying to help my mom out so she does not get taken advantage of by a roof salesman. I explained to Ken my mothers issues with her leaky roof and being very elderly and he advised he would go survey her roof to see if it needed to be replaced (already had one roofer advise that the entire roof needed to be redone for nearly 20k). Sunday afternoon we discovered shingles in our yard and could see a section of them had blown off in the most recent wind storm. On Monday morning after a little research, we called Roof.net and discovered they would be able to get us an estimate later that morning and potential be able to fix it that day. Ken and his crew did a great job on our roof replacement. They made the whole process stress free and painless. Shingles got delivered a day before the roof was to be done and the crew delivering them was very courteous and rang the door bell to ask if we would be going out and needed to move the cars before they started off loading. The roofing crew arrived right at 8AM and got started working right away. We were so impressed by their hard work in 90 degree heat. They were considerate in making sure we could get in and out of the house during the work and that it was safe. They worked fast and did a great job. After finishing the roof they cleaned up all of the debris and swept both the front and the back of the house. We couldn't be any happier with the service and quality of work we received. Roof.net replaced the roof on our four bedroom colonial in February 2018, and I could not be more satisfied. I don't usually post reviews, but I'm doing one now because Ken and his team really earned their five stars. Here's why: (1) Quality: Ken's team did a great job installing the roof. He emailed us photos of the team as they were removing the old roof, dumping the old shingles into the truck, and removing a piece of plywood that needed to be replaced (he saved the old plywood for our inspection, so we could see the damage). We discovered a leak in my daughters bedroom in the middle of a 10 day stretch of on and off rain storms, and I was not sure where to find a good contractor. After reading a few reviews, I called up Ken to discuss the issue and getting a quote for the replacement roof. Ken was exactly as described: Patient, knowledgeable, and reliable. So much so that they cleaned up the perimeter of the roof line by hand. Going over it several times to ensure they found all of the smaller pieces of shingle that may have missed their tarp when doing the demo.
