This is a great little gem that is very busy on the weekends. We were lucky enough to eat at the bar or else i don't think we would have been able to sit until 9 (we didn't make a reservation). We had many small plates, my favorites were the slab bacon with guava sauce, shaved brussels sprouts with miso maple sauce and Japanese eggplant with chickpea fritters and smoked prunes- amazing. Oysters were small and overpriced, but the scallops entree made up for it. If you have dessert the fresh donuts with custard & chocolate are not to disappoint. Highly recommend if your looking for a good food in RC. read more

My mom and I dined at Roost tonight after having a good experience there a few years ago (pre-fire and renovations). The place looks great, for starters, and the staff was friendly. The highlight of the meal was definitely the cauliflower with pistachios, golden raisins, and capers that we shared as a starter. Really delicious and garlicky. I ordered the scallops with herb risotto and mushroom frito misto. The scallops were delicious and really nicely presented. The rest of the dish, however, fell pretty short. The risotto was really overcooked, almost pasty tasting, and the whole dish was covered (not garnished, COVERED) with fried mushrooms, making the whole thing pretty oily. The breading of the mushrooms also flaked off into the risotto and made an even gooier consistency. Not pleasant. While my entree wasn't the biggest hit, my mother's was a lot worse. She ordered the burger medium-rare. While the inside was cooked appropriately, the outside of the burger wasn't crusted, but *charred* and had a really burnt flavor to it. When our waiter came over to check on us, we were polite, but my mom did mention that her burger had been pretty badly burnt. The waiter's response, "oh okay," and walked away. Totally inappropriate response to a polite complaint. We finished the meal with the panna cotta with hazelnut brittle and strawberries with balsamic--totally delicious and a great portion. All in all, a hit or miss meal and a really mediocre waiter. Will probably opt to dine at better options in the Sparkill/Piermont area in the future. read more

This was my third trip and I couldn't wait. Wow, was I disappointed!!! They were out of the 2 fish specials, took my favorite salad off the menu and then ran out of wine and prosecco. We complained to the waitress who was lovely but couldn't really do anything. The owner came over sort of apologetic, offering the following response. Next time call ahead to order you special as they may get busy before 8:00 and run out. I wonder, do I now have to do that when I go to Le Bernadin? Eric Ripert would have a heart attack. Prosecco was featured in their special cocktails, but by 9:00, they were out. Also they were out of their version of pinot grigio. Neighborhood place requires catering to your local patron. Not going to make it if this continues. PS - the really sad thing is that what we did eat was really good. read more

We went to this restaurant for my wife's birthday. The menu seemed to promise that this was a "special night" type of place. The food is definitely very good, with an interesting menu. If you are a foodie, you would like the choices. The restaurant does not deliver though, on the promise. The drawback was the service. There are a few things wrong with the service. I should first point out that the staff are friendly and are trying hard. But, it feels as if they came from a diner. There's no style to the approach. Also, I have a pet peeve about having one waitress take the drink order, another delivers it, and another takes the food order, etc. Who is taking care of me? So, food is great, but the atmosphere is sorely lacking. They need a different staff and maybe table layout. Go there if you want a neighborhood bar feel, but not for a special night. read more

A nice place to sneak away to. Grab seats at the bar, order a nice selection of small plates and sit back and enjoy. The slab bacon with scallion, goat cheese stuffed French toast were winners. Went to Roost for the first time last night. Food, drinks and service were awesome and look forward to returning. One question though; the restaurant is clearly not a BYOB, however I'm pretty sure the table next to us brought in their own wine. First clue, the uncorked bottle was on the table before water and menus were brought out. Secondly the wine was Cakebread Cellars (great wine btw) but Cakebread is not on their wine list. I have been meaning to try this place for a few years and I finally had the pleasure to dine here tonight with some good friends. The restaurant is on the smaller side in terms of seating but it makes up in size by the quality of its food. The menu is not that big but they offer several special apps and entrees to fill in the gaps. For my starter I chose their specialty soup called "Spicy she crab soup". The soup was so tasty that I almost licked the bowl. It very rich and flavorful with a creamy consistency but also had texture with all the tiny bits of crab. It was amazing! For my main course I ordered the special Double Cut pork chop with a buttermilk mash. I can honestly say it was one of the best roast pork dishes I ever ate. It was cooked to perfection. For dessert we tried 3 different dishes. The doughnuts, the pie and the flourless chocolate cake. I really enjoyed the doughnuts and pie but not so much in the dry cake. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and come back again in the future. read more

First time back post-fire. We liked it just as much as we did the first time. Parking on the street or in the lot across the street, ample and close. Nice cocktail list including 3 different Cava cocktails, very tasty. We had the delicious spicy crab soup which had a lot of crab in it and was more hearty than expected. Patatas bravas were so addicting - literally the most perfectly cooked potatoes we've had in who knows how long. A generous amount for a side, they came crunchy and warm in a big bowl with a dipping sauce I can't recall (possibly the only minus of the night but the potatoes were so good it didn't matter). Entrees included the signature shrimp & plantains which was very tasty. The bartender was very helpful and made good suggestions. I think the place looks the same, nicely lit, not too big, not too small, many seats at the bar and you can eat up there too which is always nice. Tried it out after almost going back to D'Vine for second time. Will return to both and alternate when in Sparkill. read more

We had the fois gras toast (with an amazing blueberry chutney), the bbq slab bacon, the eggplant dish, and the lobster burrito (a special). Had my first visit Saturday night and was very pleased with this new version of a past favorite. The very first impression was how bright and sophisticated the new bar area was. A stone bar and comfortable stools, top shelf wines and liquor and Neil, a familiar face from long ago behind the bar, passing out good vibes, anecdotes and an array of original cocktails. Dinner in one of newly decorated dining rooms was a treat. The cauliflower appetizer, with pistachio nuts and roasted garlic, served in a warm bowl, was positively delicious. My entree of pork cutlet in rolled in panko crumbs on a bed of greens was topped off with a sunny side up egg and accompanied by an aioli dipping sauce. Tender, novel and too much to finish in one sitting. I expect to revisit this lovely new addition to the area' s dining experiences again soon. read more

What a Great meal at Roost Restaurant..Great pour of a wonderful Malbec..a Spicy Crab soup, that was loaded with Crab, a Seafood Fra Diavolo with Crab, Shrimp, Mussels & Clams..I am always hesitant to order such a meal in Rockland because, each & every Chef/kitchen overcooks the seafood (not tonight!!) Went to Roost last night(9/28) and enjoyed it. The menu is a bit strange in that there is no indication of what is an appetizer and what is an entree. However, the menu choices were interesting and not the same old, same old. We had the mussels which were very good and the cauliflower app which was creative and delicious. The pork entree was succulent and very well prepared. The service was attentive and excellent. I would have given it 5 stars if it had all of the choices on the menu available. They ran out of two entrees which we would have ordered as our first choice. This place has a good selection of local beers which were very interesting and good. Would go back. Try it with an open mind and I think you will find the food creative and very tasty. read more

I want to thank everyone at Roost for making my daughter's 30th birthday celebration such a success. You did a great job accommodating us and making us feel welcome. There were 18 of us and everything was "on the money". I had the spicy crab soup to begin and it was one of the best I have had. My husband and son had the slab bacon and it was so good neither would give up any so that I could have a taste. My eggs and sausage hash was wonderful. I had a bite of the cheeseburger my friend ordered and it was delicious. I loved the potatoes it was served with. Dessert was a real treat, especially the donuts and dipping sauce. Yummy! I could go on and on with the food but it was the service and hospitality that really made the day special. Thank you so much for everything and all the little touches. Since Roost has reopened this year I have dined there 3 times. All meals and service were very good. Tonight, my 4th visit was a sad disappointment. It was very busy which was great for them. I was happy they were doing so well. Unfortunately, by the time we were seated half an hour after our reservation time it only went downhill. The wait staff was overwhelmed and therefore we paid the price. Two hours later we finally got our dinner No apologies. ..no gesture of a free drink or dessert. Never even refilled our bread basket. Extremely disappointed by the lack of professionalism I expect from any restaurant. read more

Back again, braving the snow, and had one of the best best meals I've had in ages. Maybe a top 5 meal ever. Pasta and shellfish (a special) was outstanding -- tons of lobster (yummy) and mussels (great) and shrimp (fantastic). Pasta was cooked perfectly. Broth was without a doubt special. Very happy that Roost is open again! I went a few years ago and was so upset when the restaurant had to temporarily close due to fire damage and necessary renovations. I returned for the first time again last night and was even more pleasantly surprised than my first visit. My boyfriend and I shared a few small plates- brussels sprouts, frisee salad, patatas bravas, and the mussels. We were both obsessed with the patatas and the aioli dipping sauce. We absolutely loved everything we tried and already have a few other options ready for next time. Although we didn't have room dessert, the cinnamon donuts sounded tempting and we will be keeping them in mind for our next visit. We are looking forward to going back soon! read more

The location and parking were easy, and our reservation was ready when we got there. The room was noiser than I like, but we were seated at the best table, right by the window, and the noise was lower than it would have been in the room's center. The waitress rushed us at every turn. She hovered until we ordered drinks, didn't allow more than a few seconds to look at the menu, and was generally unfriendly and unpleasant, the worst service in recent memory. I had a Fizzie Rickie drink, which I loved. My partner thought it needed more lyme. I didn't. Food: Nothing special, well laid out, somewhere floating between artistic and pretentious. I had scallops, precisely three, which I thought stingy, but nicely served with an array of thingies, mixed together, mainly odd mushrooms, long and skinny, with a slithery texture I didn't enjoy. I don't recall what my partner ordered, but it contained plantains, which she thought too thin and hard, unlike the usual softness one expects from plantains. The chef was obviously a creative type, prepares original interesting dishes, but missed the mark a bit on both of ours. Although it might be fun to see how he handles some others, we decided, in no small measure owing to the hostile waitress, that we likely would never return. read more

This is by far my favorite place to go to.. I go to Roost sometimes once a week or once every two weeks.. the food is always on point and pasta is fresh made.. i have tried everything on the menu and i can tell you iv enjoyed everything.. Chef always makes me feel welcome sees me and always says hi to me and tells me about the new things on the menu... The service is always top notch even at the bar..Kyle is one of the main bartenders and when he makes the drinks that are always amazing... they have some good wine as well.. Now you might think this is weird but the burger at this place is Bomb always juicy and has great flavor if your not really a big eater and just want something simple... the specials each day normally sell out quick because it's that good... If you love to leave full and happy and feel like your welcome all the time this is the place for you.. the dessert is also amazing i always get the panna cotta it's the best iv had.. i have tried a lot of panna cotta and now that iv has the best i can't even try it any place els because it's a let down and all i can think about is roost panna cotta it's a must try read more

Fist visit was last night during a snow storm. We were the only ones there. That changed quickly as more folks braved the weather and gave the place some buzz. A word about the ambience: I agree with another Yelp review about tablecloth/placemat being needed. The other thing is the lighting. It sucks. At least in the room we were in, which I guess you'd call the main dinning room. It was a problem when the place was Woody's, too. Perhaps a candle (or something similar) would have made it better. The food is very good. The spicy crab soup was perfect for a snowy evening - lumps of crabmeat in a delicious, spicy broth. A lot of flavors going on there. Their burger is one of the best in the area. And, yes, it could have used a little more gruyere cheese on it. It was served with "fries", but not the usual kind. More like "tater tots", but in a good way... crunchy on the outside soft potato on the inside. The salmon was perfectly cooked although the polenta dumplings it came with were a tad dry. The service was just OK, although it was clear that the server really didn't know the intricacies of the menu. I think she thought she was going home early due to the snow. Guess we and the other guests put the kibash on that. Wine list is small and only a few by the glass. However, the ones that they have by the glass are very good. (We have stopped by a few times to have a glass of wine, so we knew they were trusty.) All in all a pretty good spot. If you are looking for the same-old-pub-grub, this is NOT the place. A modicum of adventure is needed to appreciate the menu. read more

High prices and boring atmosphere. When we walked in and saw that we were the only customers at 5:30 we knew this was trouble. Tough to find something on the menu that sounds normal so I got the $15.00 burger and it was big disappointment. All beers are ale and unknown??? Amazing food. Amazing staff. Owners super nice and friendly. My only recent complaint and reason for not being 5 stars is for the recent situation at the bar. We always come and grab 2 seats at the bar, however as of the past couple of months we noticed they started taking reservations for seats at the bar. We literally came 3 times and were told no tables at the bar and the bar was literally empty with a bunch of reserved cards on almost every seat. On one occasion there were several seats but as they were looking to see if they could fit us it was easy to hear the staff talk about how those seats were for so and so and these seats are for so and so. It's as if the bar seats are now exclusively reserved for certain patrons. This is rather annoying because we come here often. One night we noticed several of the reserved seats nobody was showing up and a line was forming with people wanting to sit at the bar. Please please consider getting rid of this new policy as it seems like your pushing aways walk ins who are getting turned away. If you reserve for some then you must do it for all. Much prefer the previous open policy at the bar it was much more organic but now it feels like it's impossible even if you walk in early to get a seat at the bar. read more
