We visited the restaurant on 11/14/18. My husband and I had been there before and were not happy with the food then. We have newbies to our area and we are all from Boston. We crave great fish so we decided to try it again. Our waitress was not pleasant from the moment we were seated. We asked about the Clam Chowder if it was like New England Clam chowder. She replied I don't know what yours is like. Instead she could have said I'm not sure but we sell a lot. It was terrible. Had a funny after taste. Then we ordered appetizers. Crab cakes .. yuck Coconut shrimp was ok. The onion fins were very good. We placed our orders. When the waitress served the food she put a plate down on table. My husband touched the plate to pass down the table and said wow this is hot. Her response "Well it wasn't hot on my side! " Fish and chips- fish was mushy. Crab cakes - no The person that ordered these has never ever left food on his plate. He ate 1/2 of one. The cole slaw -no funny taste. French fries -ok I ordered the the Lobster Cargot. We specifically went there because a friend raved about it. Lobster over cooked. Did not finish the dish. Passed it along to the others to try and even then left some. The seafood pasta dish was sent back after one bite. Then the bill came. I was charged for two sides with my lobster dish. When I asked about the charge. I asked were the 2 sides not included? She said no. I said "then why did you ask what sides I wanted then?" She GRABBED the check and went somewhere . Came back it was taken off. We've been meaning to try Roosterfish for a while. Bar area is fun, good crowd. My meal was disappointing. Dry, over-cooked, planked salmon, veggies mushy. Mashed potatoes cold, they did graciously replace those. Did not complain about the rest. Don't always have time for full meal redos and figured it is what it is, just didn't eat it. Not sure where the high ratings come from. Our crab cakes tasted good but were soggy and greasy. I had salmon on a plank that was over cooked and tasted a bit like creosote or burnt tires. I'm from Chicago, took my mom here for her birthday and we really enjoyed it! Our server, Stephanie, was a pure delight!! She suggested the margarita's and oh boy they were delicious! I'm not really a fan of fish so she went out of her way to help me decide what to order. Mom had the crab cakes and absolutely loved them. Everything was going great for moms birthday until we had an encounter with the manager, he was a bit of an ass. Too much to write about but maybe he should find another line of work, managing a restaurant is not for him, he doesn't have the happy go lucky personality that is needed in this line of work. We have lived in the Largo area for some 40 years. We remember when this restaurant was a Shoney's. This was our first trip to Rooster Fish and likely our last. The place was packed though I am at a loss for why. Prices are good, but the food is mediocre at best. Our server, Jennifer did her best, but the kitchen screwed up our order and it took a bit to finally get it. I had shrimp and scallops which were just Ok. My wife had some kind of Salmon special she did not care for. The atmosphere in the restaurant is totally non existent and so loud you can't hardly talk across the table. Mothers day was wrecked my one of the owners of this establishment. ive been to this restaurant 50 times or so over the past 2 and checks ranging from 45$-150$ and a half years and never had any issue with the staff , management or the food. when I comes to management I normally talk to Shawn one of the owners just in a casual "how are you and how are things" convo .But today was horribly different with another gentleman that looked to stand over 6ft but slouched with grey hair and slightly jaundice colored skin. Reservations where at 6pm seated at 6:08 and the Server came to our table at 6:24 ....late I know but its Mothers day and it was busy and I can understand that but our drinks didn't reach the the table till 6:41 and then the Server took our order .... again I can let all of this go because its mothers day and it was hopping busy. 7:12 our dinners came and my sister crab legs came in two clusters with 5 legs each clean looking and large where my mothers was 3 clusters with 4 legs and 3 unattached claws and the total portion looked to be 33% smaller that what my sister had. so told the server that this didn't look right and she said she get the manager. So the manager shows up and asked whats the problem and We told him there was a difference with the crab legs between my sisters and my mothers and he leaned over the table and squinted at the crab and said that he did not see a difference and what did I want him to do about it..... I calmly asked If I could speak with him privately and we walked over towards the bar and he was already in a defensive posture, I said look and I listed off all the wait times with seating, drink orders, food timing and the fact that I understood all of that due to what day it was but the fact was that my mothers and sisters same order looked nothing alike. he responded with I'll give you free desert and I said no I dont want your desert , and all I want is that my Mother on Mothers day gets what she Ordered and for it to look and weigh within 90% of the other same order. so in a snarky voice the said fine Ill take care of it and stormed off. 5 or so mins goes by and he shows up with 1 and a half clusters of crab legs and sits them In front of me and not my mother and said I guess you all can share them as if he was implying that I was trying to get something free.... grrr I talked to the server afterwards and asked if he was a manager and she stated no, that he was the Main Owner... #nevergoingback read more

First, the food. We started with Conch Fritters and a dozen oysters. The oysters were large, fresh, good tasting and the market rate was pretty good. The fritters, though, were mostly breading. My wife truly enjoyed her steak, and I thought my seafood pasta entree was very tasty, with a slight bit of heat. We also had the Key Lime Pie, and while it wasn't quite "Key West authentic" it was quite good. And, to top it all off, our server was excellent. The only "negative" thing I could possibly say about Roosterfish was that it felt like a Chili's or TGI Friday's. I wanted so much to love this place. The owners genuinely seem to care about service. But the onion "fins" came out cold - not warm - cold and just left a real bad taste in our mouth. For $8.99, the fiesta salad should have blown me away ... but it was so bland and unimaginative. Some greens, canned black beans, strong onions and cheese shreds. Blaaaaaah. Had lunch there today with my wife. Very friendly staff, we asked for a booth and were seated immediately. Started with the "Roosterfish Fins" deep-fried onions. I was expecting something like a bloomin onion or at least onion rings but instead received sliced strips of onions that were mostly breading. The whole concoction was so greasy, that the paper lining the bottom of the tray was translucent. My wife ordered the Cedar Plank Salmon and it was absolutely delicious! I had a few bites and it was cooked perfectly. I ordered the fish and chips, and like the onion "fins" was soaked in grease. The paper in the basket wasn't see through like with the appetizer, but was definitely greasy. My order was an all you can eat, but I didn't even bother with a second helping. Six hours later as I am writing this, my stomach is just now settling down. I will never go back, but if anyone does go.....STAY AWAY from the fried dishes! read more

Nice down to earth upscale dinner! Seems weird, reminds of the restaurants of the 60s and 70s. A little crowded but adequate. We go for seafood dinners. Had a training the other day in Largo so decided to look for seafood nearby. Came here when I saw 9.99 all you can eat Fish and Chips. It is every day from 2-5. We got right in and the service was great. Appetizers nicely done and great prices. Hush puppies $1 for 6 and they were tasty. Talk about a sweet deal margaritas in a large glass only $3 on Sunday only $1 all day. I had crab stuffed tilapia with 2 sides under $9. The coleslaw was the best. They really pay attention to the food good presentation and very very flavorful. One of the owners came to our table twice and was very friendly. This used to be so much better , it truly did . I ordered the fish and chips , I know that the price was $8.50 for lunch , and I know that the fish is Pollack . The fish that I got the fillets were so thin that you could hardly see the fish inside , I was pretty much just putting tartar sauce on deep fried hard crunchy batter . I didn't like the coleslaw , it was not crunchy and fresh it was soggy and limp . The fries were ok . The service was good . I just wish that they would charge a little more and give better fillets of fish , fish that you can actually see . I won't be back . My advice to the owner , Charge more and give better quality of fish . read more

OK so being from New England we know good seafood. We have found some OK alternatives until now. My wife had the whole steamed Maine lobster and said it was the best she has had since moving from Boston 6 years ago. I had the fish and chips and it was outstanding as well. Firm white flake fish, not overly breaded. Fried perfectly and not greasy. One thing I have to say is unlike other restaurants that charge extra if you want more than one small cup of tartar sauce they put a squeeze bottle of what tasted like a fresh made tartar sauce not from a bottle or jar. My sister had the Mahi-Mahi and said it was excellent as well. Service was excellent and 3 for dinner getting out of there for $50 was not to bad. We have found a new favorite spot for seafood. read more

We were touring and traveling north on highway 19 with no particular destination for food, but still n the mood for a restaurant with a Florida atmosphere. Saw the Roosterfish Grill and pulled in and hoped for the best. What a cool place! Staff is genuinely glad to see you. Atmosphere is naturally "fish" but not in the dirty barnacley way. I had cod, but I'd suspect any fish dish will also be properly done, moist and tasty and seasoned just right. After enjoying the meal we felt motivated to buy one of their home made key lime pies. Most delicious. A great discovery for us and, if we lived here, we'd become regulars. read more

Just stopped in here for the first time 2 nights ago and I could have taken it or left it. The food was okay, and the service was kinda on the just okay side as well. My significant other and I had the crab cakes and buffalo chicken straps to start. The chicken straps were great, but the crab cakes I wasn't crazy about the seasoning or something. The crab cakes just didn't taste fresh. We also tried the crab corn chowder also flavor was a little lacking... Then onto the main course we had the "Lobster Special" and the Burger. The burger I would give a 3/5 stars it was cooked to temp, and the onion bun was something new but I think it could have been executed better with a standard bun or a pretzel bun. Now let's talk about the "Lobster Special" I think it may have been over cooked the lobster was gummy rather than succulent. Even the tail meat was rubbery. Finally let's talk about service, because after all were out to eat to be served. The service I thought was sketchy our waitress although pleasant seemed like she was being stretched thin. She seemed to be waiting on tables on the other side of a wall and couldn't always see us so drinks often went unfilled for a cool 5 minutes while my siginignant other was choking on the chewy lobster. All in all I won't be returning, but as always go and have your own experience. read more

My wife and I were in town for a long weekend and I found this place on Yelp. We called and tried to make a reservation, but fell outside of their 6-hour call ahead window. So, the young lady said come on in and they would seat us as soon as they could since we were only a party of 2. We arrived around 6:00 and the parking lot was packed because of all the "early bird special" diners. I was lucky to get the last open spot. They had a tall table for 2 available outside, so we gladly took it. Although we waited longer than normal for our server to come and greet us, once she did, she was attentive. We ordered the mozzarella sticks and hush puppies for appetizers and then my wife got a large house salad for her entree and I ordered the baked cod stuffed with crab with crab sauce. The latter came with 2 sides so I ordered the Cajun grits and the vegetable of the day that was green beans. It was all very tasty as evidenced by our clean plates.
