STEAK TARTARE* = 2 stars :( no flavor and mushy
    Evelyn E.

Hadn't been here in many years, but wanted to see if it was just as great as before. While we had a later timed reservation for the 4th of July, we were able to be accommodated for our earlier 45min arrival at 5pm. They were pretty busy so that was awesome. We were immediately sat in their sushi room, the ambiance a bit outdated. Our server from the get go seemed rushed and distracted, but kindly answered our questions and took our order. Our steak tartar appetizer took a long time to arrive. Sadly wasn't up to par and seemed kinda mushier than any I've ever tasted. It also lacked seasoning, so giving that 2 stars. The accompaniments on the plate helped so it wasn't a total failure but still a disappointment. Their courtesy sourdough bread and olive oil with herbs was good. Our meal also took a long time to arrive. When it did, we had to ask for forks because apparently somebody didn't set the table correctly... and server didn't notice before our dinner service. He should have noticed when bringing out our appetizer at the very least. As for the main entrees, The panko hogfish and garlic mash was good, as well as the picatta sauce, 4stars. The filet mignon kabob with shrimp scampi was disappointing, 1.5 stars. We couldn't tell it was filet mignon and double checked the menu later thinking it was some other cut of beef. The shrimp in itself had a different odd taste. Not the scampi sauce which was good but the actual shrimp. We were not pleased at all with this type of shrimp. While our server glanced over at us several times before the appetizer, he didn't check on us again till about half way through the main course. By then I wasn't feeling well and had my husband flag him down to start our exit service. That took awhile too. 2 stars in service. For what this place use to be like back in the day, I would say the service and food quality have gone down. Today's experience was less than favorable and below average. For the price of the food, I would say we didn't get what we paid for. 2 sodas, 1 appetizer and 2 entrees was $110.. what we got in return didn't match. So to answer the magic question, no, we will not be giving this place our business anymore. Several misses on the food quality and execution made it less than desirable to give this restaurant another chance, especially at this higher price point as well.

Wonderful selection of meat, fish, cocktails, and wines. Great service and ambiance! I ordered stuffed sea bass with brussel sprouts and a crème brûlée for dessert!

Great food and amazing views. We came in before 5:30 and had the early dinning menu which was amazing. Service was great and all around good experience.

First time dining at Salt Rock Grill of Indian Shores and it was a nice experience. We had a large party this evening and our service was very efficient. We ordered a variety of foods from the extensive menu selections. Fish was cooked excellent, desserts were great!! Manager also stopped by to check on us at the end of the night which was nice. Definitely recommend this establishment for great food and efficient service!!!

Stopped here for an early dinner for my friends bachelorette. The food took 45 minutes to come out despite the restaurant not appearing busy in the late afternoon. Server did not mention anything about the long wait. The salad of the sea was not the best - avocado was browning, iceberg lettuce, and seafood was a bit undercooked. The supper club deals were a good price 25$ for entree, salad, and dessert (cobbler was on the sweeter side). The best dish my friend ordered which was the Thai curry which I tasted a bit of and was tasty!

Absolutely delicious meal! We had a dinner here on vacation and every meal enjoyed by our party of 8 was incredible. Appetizers were amazing and we will definitely be back! Our server Brandon was attentive to all of our needs and took GREAT care of us! Ambiance of the restaurant was wonderful both outside on the patio/ bar area and inside! SOLID 5 STARS! Two words: STONE CRAB! My son and I took out my 90 year old mother because she wanted stone crab claws. We ordered 2 lbs of the Large Crab Claws ($53 per pound), these were the mid priced claws (Choices were medium, large, and jumbo). The claws came with a tasty dipping sauce and were the meatiest stone crab claws I've ever had. We selected our entire meal from the appetizer menu. Stone Crab Sushi ($25), 1doz raw oysters, 1 doz Parmesan baked oysters, Grouper soup, and a huge meatball. 3 people ate 9 appetizers and we each also had a martini with blue cheese stuffed olives (With extra olives, because there is no such thing as too many blue cheese stuffed olives). Throughout the entire meal, our waiter Jaime was on the ball. He knew the entire menu and daily specials by heart. He Made suggestions without being pushy. He brought extra napkins and lemon wedges without being asked. Every time a water glass became close to half empty, it was filled. Every used dish was whisked away. I cannot think of a single thing he could have done to provide better service. A fantastic meal with a high price tag, but worth every penny

Excellent steak, fish and seafood located in Indian Shores, intercostal. Beautiful location. Daily specials that include fresh catches of the day. The menu includes something for everyone. Perhaps the "supper club" special will intrigue you?!? We made reservations for our early Saturday evening dinner. We requested the patio and wee seated immediately. Our server, Steven, was prompt and absolutely on the ball. For me, grouper is always my favorite selection from the menu, and I was in luck as it was the black grouper fish for the day. What we had: *** New York Strip steak with lobster tail **+ Grilled Black Grouper with cheddar cauliflower *** Pecan Crusted Black Grouper with garlic mashed potatoes. The steaks were cooked to individual likings. The black grouper..both ways were each equally decadent! This place will not disappoint a meat eater or fish and seafood lover.

The food and service were amazing! The steak tasted wonder and the cocktail delicious.

Salt Rock Grill is on the inter coastal so the view from this restaurant is very scenic. The server started out a little on the slow side and picked it up after that. We came for the early bird specials and ordered the Filet kabob and the Fisherman's platter. I also ordered a lobster bisque appetizer and regretted the choice. I can't say it was bad as I'm sure people like it but it was too sweet for my liking. The filet kabob was cooked and seasoned right and very tasty. The scallops and shrimp were lightly breaded and pretty tasty. The fish of the day, that came with the platter was red fish. The fish was over battered and too dry, fried and dried like a potato chip. The dinners also came with bread (fresh baked) salads, and desert, which were all good. The EB meals really were an exceptional value and I would recommend this establishment.

Salt Rock is great! Had an early dinner this evening with a few folks from work. Had a table overlooking the water, elevated a bit over the back patio. Great views! Great service and great food as well. The sourdough with oil/seasoning was a delicious kickoff (warm and delicious!). Also had a kabob appetizer with chicken and steak, flavorful and cooked perfectly. Even served with a cast iron fire bowl so you can heat it up more if you'd like, smelled delicious and made for a perfect char. I ordered the pork chop and it was the best chop I've ever eaten at a restaurant. Tender but with a perfect char on the outside. The sauce was sweet but not overpowering. Mashed potatoes were the perfect compliment. They even bought us small desserts to enjoy after we finished our meal. Server was fast, attentive, and nailed every bodied order. Really a must try in the area.

Came here with a group of friends and the one of the hostess was so rude. One of our party had difficulty walking and they gave us a table in the sun. This person made us walk all the way back and then the senior hostess says that the table I suggested was the one we should have been seated. I asked for the manager and told her that this was horrible service to start our journey here. So after that fiasco, we placed our appetizer orders. I selected the Key Lime Oysters with a Classic Mojito. The atmosphere was quiet and conducive to spirited conversation. I decided to go with the Black Grouper with Gulf Shrimp, Crab, and Scallops topping. I got my oysters and they were delicious. The parmesan and garlic are perfect. I want to say again the atmosphere here is great for families or meeting with friends. Conversations can be heard up and down the table. My entree and most of my party's was fresh caught. The day's catch is removed at the end of the day. My meal has arrived and as you see it looks great. We are starting to converse more and I can't be rude to my friends so I will say it tasted great. I'm going to give them 3 stars based on the first impression. Without that they would have had 4.5 stars.

Excellent customer service. For some reason our open table reservation didn't come thru so the staff easily booked us in the next hour. We were greeted right away and taken to our table. We preferred inside at this time as the temperature dropped at night. We still had a nice view of the water. We started with their ceviche and lady sunset roll. Unfortunately they were out of the hogfish as part of their catch of the day. Instead I enjoyed the Chilean sea bass. My husband has their rib eye steak. We finished off with a slice of caramel apple pie with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious anniversary dinner and the service was superb!

Ask the Community - Salt Rock Grill

Is Salt Rock open for business?

    yes

    What is the dress code?

I have gone in shorts and a tee. But don't go in your bathing suit. lol

Is it family friendly early bird time for well behaved children?

Yes. I would say you could bring well behaved kids any time. It isn't super fancy

Does this restaurant cook your catch? We're going on a fishing charter soon and I think I read on trip advisor they did, but if anyone could confirm that'd be great!

I don't think they do. But call them and ask if they do or if they know of someone who will.

Do you have a Sunday brunch? If yes what are the hours and I assume reservations suggested.

No they do not have brunch

    What time is early bird?

    4pm

Is the main menu available during early bird?

    Yes it is!

Are there gluten free options on the menu?

    Yes, I believe there are

Dress code? Arriving from the airport casually dressed.

I went casually dressed and felt a bit underdressed inside. More of a causal atmosphere outside, and at the outside patio bar. If there was a dress code it didn't seem heavily enforced.

Do you deliver to at Petersburg Hilton?

    No delivery

If you go during the Early Bird hours, can you still order off the regular menu?

    Yes

Is happy hour/the early bird special available on Saturday's?

I can't answer about happy hour but I know we've often ordered the inexpensive early bird meal on weekends - note it's only selected menu items and a tiny sliver or "shot glass" of dessert - awesome deal though :)

I love to get the warm lobster roll and it comes with a lobster butter. I like to get their coconut shrimp since it's hand battered on site and also their onion rings are also hand battered made to order. They have a really good smoky dipping mayo sauce that comes with the onion rings or fries. It is a very good sauce. We started with the calamari, which was perfectly crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and served with two delicious dipping sauces. It disappeared quickly! For our entrées, the coconut shrimp was outstanding. The shrimp were large, coated in a crunchy toasted coconut breading, and paired perfectly with the orange blossom honey marmalade. I called on a Monday evening for reservations for 8 people for the following Saturday evening at 6pm and requested the room near the bar. I was told no problem - they could put two tables together for us. She took my name and phone number and all was good. Saturday afternoon at 4pm I received a text from Coco's stating they could not seat 8 people in the bar area - 6 people is the most they can take. I explained what happened when I tried to use their online reservation app and it kept messing up that I called and spoke to someone there who I assumed was the hostess. She asked me for the persons name and I did not remember it (5 days earlier) The hostess on the phone didn't care and again stated that the largest party allowed in that room was 6 people. I asked why she waited until 2 HOURS before the reservation to call me and she said she and the other hostess came in that night at 4 pm and saw the reservations then. I asked her if she could seat us in the main dining room and she said no they could not. This is inexcusable and bad policy to not review reservations in advance in order to notify patrons of an issue. So Saturday night before Fathers Day, 8 people -4 dads-were left to hang out to dry.

The house salad with Pima colada dressing has me imagining how to make this dressing at home. Sweet and creamy and easily coating every leaf. The bread at the start of the meal for a disproportionate amount of attention from my family. It was served hot, with garlic and maybe other seasonings across the top, and generous sides of butter. Our initial server, Kyle, kept the bread flowing for us until the meal came and it was fantastic. We gave the potato skins a try, and they were delicious! My family ironically isn't huge conch / shelled fish eaters so the rest of the appetizers didn't suit us much and this was a lil Midwest taste while on vacation. We returned to try the jalapeño crusted grouper and were again very satisfied. Totally different than the coconut mahi, it's savory and well flavored but leaves you far from begging for water. We only ate here bc of proximity to coming right off the beach. The food is bland. The grouper…read moregrilled shrimp and oyster. Bland. They had a nice side salad and broccoli and corn which made it healthy at least. The service. Oh my. Linda. She is not friendly. I tried to order drinks and apps and she pushed getting dinner. She was rushing me that I almost forgot to order the bland oysters and gross BBQ barely cooked bacon wrapped scallops. When I tried to back up to order the apps. She literally yelled. Are you not going to order your kids entrees? Like accusing me of child abuse. The table next to us looked up. Then when I tried to order my son's dish w sides. She kept insisting / yelling w wide eyes. It only comes w fries. And I explained I'm not ordering the basket of shrimp. I'm ordering the entree. When she finally listened. She apologized and realized how rude she was coming across. Probably bc both my husband and kids as well as the other table had awkward shocked looks on our faces. She was much more pleasant after that. I tried not to take offense. Maybe the fan was distracting her from listening as it was blowing us out of the restaurant. The fan was on so high w the AC that everyone was freezing bc we came from the beach w wet bathing suits under our clothes. The kids kept going outside to warm up while we dove for our napkins and other items that flew off the table every min from the hurricane winds. I mean fan. We asked if they could turn it down or off and they said the other table wouldn't approve which was funny bc their child was wearing a hoodie and had to also go outside to warm up complaining loudly he didn't want to eat his chicken. He was too cold. Clearly they would have not wanted that fam off. They also are child abusers like us. I'm leaving detailed of a review bc I want a reminder that $160 later for a family of 4 isn't worth this and to not repeat this mistake bc we visit this beach often. Definitely walk farther.

They had a fresh catch of grouper that day, so we decided to try the grouper nuggets. They're market price, but absolutely worth it. Even our friend preferred them over his fried fish. The batter was light, crispy, and delicious. Our kids ordered the bacon cheese fries and loved them. Just a heads-up: they use a nacho cheese sauce rather than shredded cheese, which some people may prefer to know ahead of time. Our friend from Massachusetts ordered the lobster sub (also market price) and said it was worth every penny. My husband and I split the grouper nuggets and the Philly cheesesteak. The bread is brought in from up north, and our server's recommendation did not disappoint. The sandwich was rich, flavorful, and one of the highlights of the meal. We also tried the onion rings. They use a beer batter, which wasn't our favorite, but that's more of a personal preference than a criticism. Overall, we'd definitely return if we're in the area again. The only downside was parking--$29.99 for two hours is pretty brutal. Thankfully, the food and atmosphere helped make up for it.
