I considered giving this a 4/5 because the atmosphere was more like a bar than a luxurious restaurant but the food, drinks, and menu are beyond 5/5 and the atmosphere is surely desirable for social people. It's not a place for a quiet evening with the spouse but it is absolutely a very fun place to go for an exciting unique food and drink menu in a casual environment. A lot of mixed feelings about this place. Let me start by saying though, the vibe and decor of the restaurant is great. Love the style and open layout concept. Looking at the menu, everything sounded amazing. Photos made the food look incredible and the reviews were great. I had high expectations after researching a little bit. The angel biscuits were INCREDIBLE. The best thing on the menu. Something about dipping it in all the ingredients that pair perfectly together in your mouth is something else. It truly was delicious. For our entrees, two of us got the braised short rib meatloaf and my sister got the chicken under a brick. We ordered mac and cheese for the table. The short rib was pretty good in my opinion, especially paired with the mashed potatoes and broccolini. I would order that again. My other sister said hers was a bit dry and didn't like it as much as I did. Where they went wrong is the chicken under a brick and mac and cheese. I was confused when I tried these because everything else had been pretty good up to this point. The chicken under a brick was not great and I don't recommend getting it. There was a lack of flavor and the ingredients together just didn't do it for us. My sister didn't eat more than a couple bites. The mac and cheese also lacked a lot of flavor and tasted pretty bland. The only term I can think of for describing the food is inconsistent. Some things are incredible and others fell flat. However, I won't let that detour me from coming to try other things. I just won't be trying those two things again. Another point to add is it is a bit overpriced. read more

Honesty one of the better meals I've had dinning out in a while...and I live in Chicago which has tons of great restaurants. The order: *Fried Green Tomato BLT - so tasty! Loved all the flavors esp the pork belly bacon and pimento cheese *Farmer's Salad - super fresh veggies and perfect amount of dressing, the candied pecans were a nice touch *Fried Chicken Brined in Sweet Tea - an absolute must, the chicken was so juicy and the skin wasn't crazy crispy fried but like good fried that you want to eat up that skin. I want to friend that honey Tabasco sauce...I'm not a big Tabasco person when there are so many good hot sauce options, but wow with honey it's superb *Barbecue Bruleed Spare Ribs - fall off the bone ribs, wow. Great flavor, great texture, don't try to be classy just get your fingers dirty! *Truffled Tater Tots - so tots are my least favorite form of "potato" because I feel like they're not realllly potato, but got them because truffled. They were ok but would probably skip *Gooey Sweet Corn Soufflé - loved the little cast iron, but probably would have preferred a corn bread, maybe with some more of that honey Tabasco if I'm being honest *Smokey Plantains & Bacon - YUM!! My favorite side dish by far. The smokiness really took it over the top We also had a cocktail (Heat Wave - sub Casamigos) and a bottle of Pinot noir. Think the cocktail menu could use some more options, but that's coming from a tequila / mezcal drinker and acknowledging this place is southern focused. This was one of our first indoor dining experiences after the covid shutdown and I felt so comfortable and safe. We made a reservation online and got seated right away. All the staff was wearing masks and using hand sanitizer frequently. The tables were spaced out so much which made me feel safe. We started with the Fried green tomato blt appetizer and it was perfect for sharing. Crispy, salty and a little sweet. For entrees I got the Salmon, my husband got the Brick chicken and our friend got the short rib Meatloaf. They use fresh and seasonal ingredients for all their dishes which make me them even more tasty. My favorite dish was the brick chicken with the peas and light sauce. The chicken was cooked perfectly and juicy. They also have an asking side dish of Mac n cheese if you can squeeze in room for that. I'm going to start with the reason I gave it so low a score. If you look at my reviews they are mostly positive and I believe that I am normally upbeat. So here is the reason, we made reservations 2 weeks in advance, broke up our party to fit their requirements. Showed up 10 minutes early and were not seated until 30 or 40 minutes past our reservation time. We were told that they were waiting for people to leave. Why make reservations if you're not going to honor them. If we didn't have reservations we would have shown up earlier to make the next event on time. Very frustrating. Now that being said the food was great, our server did a nice job, we all enjoyed our time there and I do recommend it, just don't plan on a reservation time, arrive early and "wait for people to leave " it's what we did. read more

Braised Short Rib, Deviled Eggs, Bacon board, Plaintains, and Grits were what we got. We started with the deviled eggs and the bacon board. The deviled eggs are great but a very small portion even for two people. The bacon board had good bacon chunks on it and had very good cheese curds, and it also comes with pork rinds that I was impartial too. My wife and I got the half rack to share, and they were very good with a good mix of sweet and savory. They don't feel as filling as ribs you would get at a bbq place but the flavor was very good. We got Plaintains and grits as our sides, both were good, but the Plaintains were surprisingly better and they mixed the sweetness with some spice. Will come back again to try the chicken. read more

You guys, if you want to treat yourself... run to Root & Bone. This is one of the best meals I have had in a long time! This was our second time visiting. First time we went with friends and this time we went for a date night. You really can't beat the atmosphere and it is for sure a hidden gem in Indy. Our meal was insane and we left more than full! We started with the Grandma Daisy's Angel Biscuits (Do not come to Root and Bone and not order these!). I was disappointed that they took off the fried green tomato BLT from the menu before I had the chance to try. These were replaced by the Braised Brisket 'ZLT,' however, I did not order since I am vegetarian. My husband ordered the Fried Chicken Brined in Sweet Tea (Half Bird). He got this the first time we came and has not stopped talking about it since. The one thing is I wish they had a vegetarian entrée option. But they were very friendly and the chef was able to make something for me! The waitress suggested I order the Caprese Style Sausage Gnocchi and substitute zucchini for the sausage. It ended up being amazing and was packed with flavor. The waitress asked us what we were celebrating and we said "life," and that is exactly what you do when you come to Root and Bone. I love how their menu changes with the season and they only use the freshest of ingredients. Our waitress seemed a bit terse but not enough to warrant a complaint. She had great recommendations and was attentive given the busy nature of the restaurant. The chicken biscuits are TO. DIE. FOR. The biscuit was flakey and delicious. My husband always wanted to get the chicken and biscuits appetizer but when I got the Angel biscuits appetizer is when I truly feel in love with them! I've been for dinner and brunch. I was fortunate enough to be able to dine for brunch at the original Root & Bone in NYC last year. Needless to say, I was so excited to hear that this restaurant was making its debut to Indy! I went here last night for dinner to celebrate my boyfriend's bday. It was such a pleasant experience, and I cannot wait to return. Due to Covid 19 precautions, we chose to dine outside for the evening. The inside is truly beautiful, and when the time is right for us, we will enjoy a meal indoors too. Their attention to detail is great. Their patio was very nice, however a few umbrellas would be of great use, as it was quite toasty. They have a great cocktail, wine and beer menu. My boyfriend loved the thyme and bourbon drink. For food, we selected the biscuits, shrimp and grits, bone in pork chop, and the summer greens. Our choices were delicious and filling! We'll be back! Everyone enjoyed their food and we were talking who we were bringing with us next time as well as trying to pick what we were going to try next time. I had a side of greens and macaroni and cheese. Surprisingly loved the crunchy cornbread top! My mom had the Kale Caesar with shrimp and said the only request she'd make would be having the hard boiled eggs cooked a little longer. Then my dad had the fried green tomatoes and the waffles... there was nothing left on either plate. Update: We ended up order carry out for Easter. I've heard about root & bone for a while now and I'm mad it took my so long to come! This is a great spot to go out for nice more uppity meal especially for a good Sunday brunch. That's exactly what I got a "Brunch burger" that was delicious! Also had there drunken deviled eggs that were packed with flavor! I had first judged them because they were pink but that didn't mess with the taste at all. The ambiance was superb with nice decorations and we had an amazing waiter. It did take a while for our alcoholic beverages to come out each time we ordered but the good still outweighed that. The spot sits right on the corner of a busy street but there is a nice convenient lot across the street! Definitely would recommend. read more

Based on two visits here I am giving a 4 star rating. The first visit was a phenomenal 5 stars plus. The second visit barely deserved a 3 star review, so make that a 3 minus. Interior is phenomenal, nice fresh, airy and welcoming. Great job, whoever turned this old building into the hip and happening restaurant it is now. During our first visit, the staff was wonderful, friendly welcoming and very attentive without hovering (a quality I truly appreciate). We loved the food (more about that later) and so as we left, I went ahead and made a reservation for brunch a few weeks out, which brings us to our second visit: Apparently the host just wrote down my reservation information for sh*ts and giggles, because there was no record of any reservation. The apparent manager obviously frowned upon us showing up "without a reservation". Luckily they were able to fit all 11 of us in since we came right at opening time, but still it irked. When the waitress took our drink order finally, she would not take any food orders. We did get our drinks, but still unable to order any food, as she was quick to disappear. Yes, she had other tables, but they all came in after us. However, they were allowed to order their food and most even received their food before we were able to order. Not cool at all. Then there was a misunderstanding of one of the guests order. No problem you would think. The wrong food was brought out, and my guest explained again what she actually wanted. So the apparent manager told her to keep the wrong food as a freebie since my guest tried to give it back to him. Ok, fine, leave the mistake on the table then... BUT... here comes the rude part... He says "You're welcome" in the most snooty kind of way. That was unnecessary, as was the face he made behind her back as she explained to him that she would like the poached eggs a bit more done than is customary. She did get the another plate on the fly, but with the eggs underdone. So service seems to be hit and miss. I do enjoy the food. The presentation is flawless, Instagram worthy always. The grits and mac and cheese are some of the best out there. The angel biscuits are wonderful. Light and fluffy biscuits with 'chicken juice' and salt and sesame seeds to dip in. Great appetizer and quite filling. My personal favorite would be the ribs. They are wonderful. A nice subtle taste, awesome presentation, and just barely hanging on to the bone. Also the everything waffle was delicious and an innovative dish. The subtle flavors of the salmon and the vinaigrette on the greens make for a delicious meal. We unfortunately weren't able to try Root & Bone before the shutdown, so my wife and I decided to grab dinner from their takeaway menu. They have a Little Bird fried chicken meal with four pieces (breast, thigh, drum, wing), a side of Mac and cheese, two biscuits, honey hot sauce for the chicken and honey butter for the biscuits. We added a side of creamed corn ($6). The Little Bird meal was an amazing value ($20) and some of the best fried chicken I've ever had in the city. Extra points for it being crispy, moist, and delicious despite being a takeout order! My wife loved the creamed corn with the garlic and shallots (she wants me to say it's the best creamed corn ever, but that isn't a very high bar). Overall, the chicken was the star, as it should be, however the biscuits were amazing as well. The Mac and cheese was just OK. The space looks great and they did a nice job preserving the history of the building while adding their own touch. We're excited about dining in, once we can. read more

Excellent food and service throughout the dinner! Although on the higher (cost) end of food venues in the greater Broad Ripple area, there is a casual appeal to the food and vibe of the restaurant. We were fortunate to find a spot on 46th not too far from the restaurant (see parking info later in the review.) We were greeted as we entered and though a detour on College had furthered our delay, our reservation on a Tuesday night was honored. I was surprised how busy the restaurant was at 5 p.m. on a weekday. But service never faltered. Our waitress Tammye was great at making recommendations for first time visitors and she guided us through the multiple courses we selected. We started off with a couple small plate items: Drunken Deviled Eggs and Grandma Daisy's Angel Biscuits. The eggs arrive as 3 halves with pink egg whites nestled on an ornate plate and topped with herbs and a root chip for a little texture. I really liked them though my wife isn't a pickled egg fan thought they were just okay. However, when it came to the biscuits, it was all she could do to keep from just ordering plates of them. The biscuits are fresh and warm, with a little crunch in the crust and soft & tasty insides. And the chicken jus dipping sauce (along with sea salt and benne seeds) was something I would buy by the bottle! Real comfort food flavors. Highest recommendation here! We decided to get the two shareable entrees for dinner. My wife was leaning towards the half rack of Barbecue Bruleed Spare Ribs (served sliced). They are smoky and lightly burnt with brown sugar, pickled Fresno chili slices, and tangy bbq sauce. Very tender, though not quite falling off the bone. Definitely recommend eating this as a finger food. I was leaning toward the Sweet Tea Brined Fried Chicken which are lemon dusted (just the right amount of spices on the skin) and served with a honey tobasco sauce on the side. Very moist and tender chicken with crisped skin. The sauce wasn't very spicy hot but added a layer of flavor to our choosing. We went with the half chicken which is literal so we got both dark and light meat. Note: After eating both entrees with our fingers, we needed a little assistance cleaning up, so we mentioned it to our waitress who brought out a miniature bath tub filled with steaming hot mini hand towels to wash our fingers clean. They are VERY hot, so be careful if you request and use these. Our entrees also paired with a side order of collard greens. The greens were large leaf, not slice/cut. Though cooked in a pot with ham, I didn't particularly notice any meat in the serving. But the brothy liquid the leaves were nestled in provided lots of flavor. Very good! For dessert, we split a chocolate chip cookie sundae which has a house made cookie sliced in half and served with salted caramel ice cream, roasted peanuts, and chocolate fudge. The cookie had a chewy texture and had some white bits (I'm guessing macadamia nuts or white chocolate) that added more flavor than just a simple CC cookie. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit and look forward to returning to try some more interesting options from the menu. Getting there: Because of the construction and red line on College, be aware of any detours (College was closed between 38th and 42nd). Also note that many of the east/west streets don't allow you to cross College because of the raised median. Parking: Minimal parking spaces are behind the restaurant. 46th has free street parking on the north side of the street east of College, so approach from the east to use these. There is also an "unofficial" parking area on the southwest corner of 46th and College with access from 46th or from southbound College. The lot seems shared with "Next Door". Reservations: I went during the week and had no trouble making reservations through their website/open table. I am not sure if those who wrote that they don't take reservations on weekends were understanding correctly that there were no reservations left. The website says they take them but the prime dining times were already booked for this coming weekend (early Feb). Excellent addition to the SoBro dining scene. Price is not cheap, but the place is definitely a dining experience provided by two Top Chef contestants that chose Indy as their first foray into the midwest. Review #3622 read more

I have been wanting to try this restaurant since March when quarantine started and they closed, my reservation was canceled. It was most definitely worth the prolonged wait! My friend and I went for his birthday. It is a great restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. I highly recommend the brick chicken which was juicy and flavorful. Southern style fare in a quaint, casual atmosphere. There's a small parking lot to the side of the restaurant as well as some street parking. We made a reservation through Open Table and were seated right away at a nice table for two by the window. Our server, Logan, was laid back yet professional and gave us some helpful recommendations. He was knowledgeable about the gluten free options and procedures taken in the kitchen which is important to me as a celiac. There were several items on the menu that piqued my interest, like the smoky bacon board and the smoky plantains, but due to cross contamination with gluten in the fryer, I wasn't able to order them. Fear not! There were plenty of other safe options for me! My husband and I split the Gooey Sweet Corn Soufflé and Roasted Beet & Pear Salad as starters, both delicious! I had the shrimp and grits as my entree which was good, but a little bit bland. My husband had the fried chicken, which he said was cooked perfectly, and the truffle tater tots which he really enjoyed! The menu was a refreshing change from the typical types of food we usually eat, and the atmosphere was very welcoming and cozy. The atmosphere at Root & Bone deserves 5 stars but unfortunately don't think the food does. We had a reservation for Friday night at 7, our service was good and we were in and out rather quickly but I wasn't impressed by the food all that much. We got the meatloaf, ribs, mac n cheese and fries. The meatloaf was okay, but not your normal meatloaf which took us by surprise and it was rather dry. The ribs were the best thing we had, they do have a little kick. The Mac and cheese was so dry and not cheesy in the slightest. Fries, are fries they were fine. The meatloaf comes with broccoli and mashed potatoes, we asked to sub the mashed for Mac n cheese and he said yes but it's an up charge, ok no worries. We got the bill and were charged full price for the Mac n cheese. They said oh we just gave you extra broccoli instead. That's not at all what we wanted but whatever. I do plan on returning and checking out their brunch but probably won't seek it out for dinner again. read more

Wow, this place was amazing. We attended their soft opening...by accident. They were very gracious and let us crash their opening. The official start date is Tues, Jan 21,2020. The decor was trendy and fun. The music was upbeat, and the staff was well versed on the menu and friendly. We had Tammy, who was amazing. The place was packed, yet we never were left waiting for anything. The food....wow! We started with the fried green tomatoes "BLT" with pimento cheese and pork belly on top. Light crust on the tomatoes was delicious and came together well with the other ingredients. My husband had the 14oz NY Strip which was served with broccolini and fingerling potatoes. Whatever the light sauce was on the potatoes was simply addicting. I had the "meatloaf" which was really not meatloaf at all, rather short rib meat pressed down with a delicious heirloom tomato reduction on top. Served with broccolini and creamy mashed potatoes and gravy. Comfort food taken up to another level. I can't wait to try their sweet tea brined fried chicken the next time. We topped all of this off with some housemade key lime pie with whipped cream. A truly Outstanding culinary experience with nice size portions and fair prices. Root & Bone is definitely a must go to restaurant. We were greeted immediately upon entering. We had reservations and seated immediately. Our server, Destiny, was just wonderful. She was very outgoing and described the items. Destiny told us her favorites and why they were her favorites. Here is what we got: The appetizer was the fIngerling tostones. These were very good. I got the ribs. So good. Easy to eat with a knife and fork. The meat fell off the brown. The sauce was spot on. The bf got the meatloaf which is made with short ribs and it came with broccolini and mashed potatoes and gravy. Outstanding. I am taking his leftovers to lunch tomorrow. The Mac n cheese is also very good. I am not always impressed with restaurant mac n cheese but root and bone did it well. The cheese sauce was cheesy creamy.
