First time eating here! I loved it! They have a lot of food choices and opportunities for customization. I appreciated the large portion size. My bowl of food was HEFTY. I got a half basmati rice and half romaine lettuce base. You can choose 1 or 2 options for the base. I got the green goddess dressing. ( I had no idea which dressing to choose because they again had lots of yummy sounding options!) For my 4 toppings option I got sweet potato, egg, feta, and tomatoes. The entrees I got on top were salmon and chicken thighs. The entrees had good flavor and were seasoned well. :) Also, the girl who made my order was super nice and friendly. I will be coming back to try all the other base, topping, dressing, and entree options. I hope they don't change their portion sizes. I felt like the large size was worth the price because yummy, healthy food is quite expensive nowadays. This is also like one of the only healthier food options at Ala Moana food court. Don't come here. They have a haole lady who comes back from her break without washing her hands, half a$$ uses hand sanitizer with her hands VISIBLY black. Black under every single finger nail, not using gloves when handling the food and the lettuce and all the other toppings were touching her dirty fingernails. After I mentioned this she dumped the spring mix salad that was going all over her black hands back into the bin to serve to other customers. Since there's no way to contact management about these concerns, I've reported them to DOH. Completely unsanitary. I don't know why they hire people with poor hygiene or not at least make you wear gloves. My previous visit the steak was raw in the middle. Looked more like sashimi. DOH needs to reinspect this place. It's bound to give you food borne illness. read more

WOW WOW WOW!!! First of all, love seeing healthier options now available in the food court! Straight off the bat the pricing was very reasonable! Got a regular ($13.99) 3 toppings and 1 hot protein. Everything looked so fresh! I chose salmon as my protein and I was thinking they were gonna give me half the filet, but they gave me the whole thing!! I had low expectations just because of past experiences that when protein such as fish, chicken, or steak is left on a hot burner for an extended period of time it becomes dry and tough. BUT OMG!!! This was not the case! The salmon was sooooo moist and cooked perfectly! My husband got steak as his protein and even his steak was so tender and not chewy at all! Their servings are GENEROUS, and the food was delicious! I got a regular plate and it was more than I could finish. The honey lemon vinaigrette was really tasty, and a little goes a long way. The orzo salad added enough flavor that I didn't need a lot of dressing. Also I appreciated how I could choose a half+half option, because I'm indecisive and I enjoy both greens and rice. Ummm I'm not sure what's going on with these reviews? If they're padded?? I mean when you get lemon vinaigrette and it's sweet and dry falafel and sweet ranch, I don't know how they got 4.9 stars? When I ask for a little extra dressing on the side I had owner come forward Not the server of course he resisted and after few second said it will be 99 cents and I thought it was unprofessional. There is no where on the board it says to get a little extra dressing it's 99 cents. But what bothered me the most was the fact that the food was poor quality and the protein were super cold. Stopped at roots and greens for the first time after the beach and so glad I did! Roots and greens is a nice switch up from the usual fast food in the food court. There were so many sides to choose from! Which gives me a reason to come back :) Portions are great, I got the regular size and was able to eat it for 2 meals! Very happy that this healthier food option opened up in Ala Moana! My friend and I came here after our workout and went with their Regular plate. I was having a hard time choosing a hot protein since all of them looked so good, but I ended up getting the grilled chicken. They also have salmon, falafel, mackerel, beef, and grilled veggies. I was so torn on getting a side of falafel ($6.99) but ended up passing. After checking out though, one of the owners gave us falafel to try! Absolutely terrible service. A friend of mine got food from here while I waited in the car. To my surprise she came back feeling embarrassed. Her and I walk pass there time to time and the food there looks delicious. When she ordered today, the man working the front was rude and visibly sighed when she asked questions on how to order. If you're looking for a healthier choice while at the Makai Market Food Court in the Ala Moana Center, check out Roots & Greens! This is a new take out, next to Naniwa Ya Ramen, on the beach side of the food court. I believe it used to be the long time Spaghetti place before. If you are looking for food that is not fried, this is the place. They have grilled chickens and steak, served with your choice of salads and other veggies. The concept is a build a bowl, pick your base of veggies, 3 choices of more veggies and some pastas and your protein base (chicken or steak... they all looked good). I went with Romaine lettuce, onions, cheese and the pesto pasta with the rosemary grilled chicken. The chicken had lots of flavor and I was glad that I chose the small size for $15. The large would have been too much and I am a fairly large person. Since I skipped my workout, I didn't feel too guilty after having trying out Root & Greens. New healthy find in the Ala Moana Food Court. Such a gem to be able to discover real Whole Foods being served with such great flavor and service. A large salad is 19.99 with choice of romaine, spring mix or rice. 4 veggie sides that include the freshest veggies or bacon, egg bites, premade cucumber tomato salad, orzo salad and pasta salad. Then the protein options include chicken, steak, veggies or falafel. And Chris who helped put together my massive salad together with a thick balsamic vinaigrette was amazing. Super friendly and excellent service. Pro tip- they use olive oil and minimal seasoning so you can feel good about what you are eating. I asked specifically about seed oils and was informed they use olive oil which is such an amazing find. No inflammatory ingredients, just clean foods with great taste. My salad was bright, colorful, extremely tasty and filling. No bloating, no sugar spikes, no guilt. Loving this new addition to our food court!!!! read more

I got the regular sized bowl with half yellow rice and half spring mix, the steak and the herb yogurt dressing. The quality of the vegetables was good and I really enjoyed my bowl but I wasn't a big fan of the fried pita or hummus. I don't normally enjoy steak in my salads because it's tough and tasteless most of the time, but the steak had good flavor when I got it. In my opinion, the portion size for the price is valid seeing as we live in Hawaii. Other than that that, the service was good and the staff was really sweet when I went. First, the server (male) was really rude, didn't even acknowledge when I was standing at the counter, I had get his attention and gave him my order. This person didn't even bother to explain about the different size plates or choices. The quality of the veggies were alright but the portion for $16.00 was very small. So, I came here as they were closing. I asked if I could get 1 thing quickly because I saw they were almost done. They were super friendly and as a joke I asked "can I just take the rest of everything" and they actually did it. 15$ for a TON of food (meat, chicken, falafel balls). The food was delicious. Probably the best and tender and juicy beef I've ever had and the chicken was literally perfection. The sauce they use is also insanely good. The server was friendly and another staff was super nice too. This was the best experience I've ever had at a food court.
