Food is super healthy and delicious. Huge portions, creative menu, and solid prices. They have a great atmosphere to sit in as well. The order style is efficent and quick, and the customer service is awesome. The credit card machine broke when we were paying and the owner (i think) just gave it to us on the house. I love the concept of this place and in short I would describe it as a healthy version of chipotle. I had the Southern bowl the first time I tried it and it was great, super filling and flavorful. Second time around I created my own bowl and had to say I was very disappointed, there was significantly less in the bowl than the first time, possibly because it was custom? Not sure. I totally get that the place gets busy but I felt very rushed and didn't really have a chance to ask about my options and if I had extra options left. I'm in between giving this place a 3 and a 4 star rating but nevertheless the food is still good and the interior is nice. read more

This place was a great spot in the city and tested amazing! The bowls were not as expensive as I expected and the service was great! The space was cramped but that's to be expected in a city location.Indoor seating was closed but there are many outdoor spaces less then a block away to eat. The ONLY issue I had was the menu... not everything in the restaurant was on the menu board making it very confusing when ordering a make your own bowl. Love the food here! Staff is great but I was just made aware of this "rule" that the owner tells the staff you can't get a side of bbq sauce. I've gotten it the last few times I've been here and was told no today. It sucks if you want extra sauce with your tofu. I came in (Tuesday 10/4 around 4pm) because Roots was recommended to me by a friend and was very frustrated with the service and food that I received. The girl that took my order was very rude and not at all helpful in explaining the menu, and it seemed like she just wanted me gone as soon as possible. As I made my customized bowl, I noticed that she was also speaking very rudely to the other workers and was berating one girl who seemed a little less confident than the others. I'm not sure if she was a manager or trainer because she had a different shirt than the rest of the staff, but her attitude towards me, the other customers, and her coworkers was awful. I got the barbecue tofu and when I got home with my food I was disappointed to see that it was burnt to a crisp. The cilantro lime dressing was recommended to me by one of the workers and it was so oily that I couldn't taste anything else. My food ended up being almost $15 and it was really nothing special - go somewhere else and don't waste your money here. read more

It pains me to write this because Roots used to be my favorite place to get dinner. Unfortunately, I think the quality/consistency has declined. The price for a custom chicken has increased (used to be 10 dollars, now it's like 11.50) but the portions have decreased and I am constantly getting skimped by the bowl makers. For instance, it used to be like 2.5-3 scoops of rice for a bowl and now it's barely 2, so the bowl ends up being basically half full. Then the scoops with the toppings are barely full to the top whereas they used to be slightly overfilled so we'd get our moneys worth. The only thing they lather on is the dressing, they are very stingy with everything else. I love roots and I go 1-2 times a week so I know this is not a one time thing--it's an unfortunate pattern. I accept the price increase, but I think we should get the same amount we used to, not less food for more money. I hope Roots addresses this, because it's really scummy to give reduced portions when the price has increased. It's really disappointing to order something that used to be a full bowl and good for 2 meals, and instead get something that's more like 1/2 a bowl and barely enough for one read more

I travel for work and am gluten free. I am not a fan of the big chains so I look for something more local. Even a local chain. Tried this last night, so many options so I decided to create my bowl. It was huge and very tasty. Very very affordable. I have half my dinner for lunch today. The roasted veggies are great, love that option over just raw. Wow, love the food here! So many healthy and tasty grains and vegetables and your choice of chicken, mushroom, tofu and veggie. Each bowl is hearty. You can build your own bowl or you can pick one of their signature bowls. I went with the Roots Bowl with Roots rice which is like wild rice and spinach along with roasted sweet potatoes, pita chips, red onions, goat cheese and dried cranberries. The lemon tahini dressing is light and savory. I added bbq tofu to the bowl and that is so tasty grilled. Friendly staff and quick. Great way to get a healthy meal fast. read more

Roots is my absolute ideal lunch spot when I'm living in Oakland! As a student with lots to do, the service is fast enough that I'm usually in and out pretty quickly. I'm vegetarian, but this place caters to most, if not all dietary restrictions with the food being amazing with or without meat. This is great since I never feel like I'm stuck just getting the sole "vegetarian option" like at other places. I usually get the southern, which has a base of roots rice and kale, and toppings like chickpeas, roasted broccoli, pickled onions (which I usually get extra of because its so good), charred corn and BBQ tofu. As someone who eats quite a bit of tofu, I can say that their BBQ is my favorite, and goes perfect in this, and many other of their bowls. I tried Roots for the first time yesterday. The line was out the door, which was a little off-putting, but the line moved quickly and we were able to order within 5 minutes. Also, most people were ordering to go, so even though it was really busy, there was still a surprising amount of seating available downstairs, even at noon. I ordered a premade bowl, as recommended (the Roots bowl, with the red wine vinegar added). It was delicious and a satisfying portion, without being overly full afterward. Price-wise, it's a little more than I'd prefer to spend on lunch, but that's pretty typical for buying something in Oakland. I definitely look forward to trying more of their bowls - the entire menu had me drooling! read more
