I want to like this place, really I do. But I just can't. I've been there three times with middling to poor results. The first time I had a cut with Leigh, which was actually pretty great, but she has since moved on. I was impressed so came back the next day for balayage highlights with Jamie. I wasn't so impressed, she didn't seem to get how light I wanted to go, and I left feeling disappointed. I called later that day and to their credit they immediately offered to fix it, and didn't make me feel weird at ALL when I came back. So props for that. However I went back to Jamie for a cut and single process colour (having grown out the highlights) some time later and again, she just didn't seem to get what I was saying about the colour, and didn't mix it nearly dark enough. She also didn't give me the style I wanted, it's fine, I don't hate it, it's just not what I wanted! And to add here I did bring pictures of both cuts and colours to every appointment. So, I won't be back again, it's a shame, The salon itself is cool, vintage style seats, complimentary beer, friendly and relaxed staff, and a puppy! But they just can't seem to get my hair right sadly! read more

I came here after receiving a terrible color job at another salon in the LES. It was a bleachy overdyed job and thankfully I had Shannon correct it. From the get go- she spent about 10-15 minutes just talking to me about my hair and figured out how we could correct it. She came up with a plan of action and even did my hair in two separate processes because she wanted to be super careful. (I did ombre) Suffice to say, it was a 3-4 hour process but flew by because she's so laid back and chill. She was very knowledgeable about color and used to work for John Freida. This salon is my go to!!! I have curly hair and can be a bit picky who puts shears to these locks! The atmosphere is relaxed, staff are friendly and the hair stylists are extremely knowledgeable about maintenance, treatments and suggest/sell products that leave me with that salon feel in between visits. So I found Kim Jones on this site and I wasn't disappointed. I meant to post a review before now but Sandy got in the way! I didn't hate my hair color before I came to this salon but it was just somehow wrong. I didn't know why it wasn't working but Kim did. She transformed my faded slightly brassy highlighted color into a perfectly toned blonde with Balayage highlights and low lights. The color is so natural and the perfect tone for me. I'm not even dreading it growing out as I know it will still look great. Kim was so knowledgeable and also knew where my cut was going wrong. She blended my choppy layers and gave me advice on how to get the perfect long layered cut in the future. Sadly I don't live in New York but if I did I wouldn't let anyone else near my hair. Sarah and Lindsy are hair geniuses. I haven't had color since pre Covid and my hair was a combo of tiger/zebra. Lindsy covered my silver and blended my old baylage flawlessly. When she told me her plan of action I was skeptical meaning I was even more impressed. I had gotten a butchered cut with thinning sheers to my 2C curly hair. They also used it on my bangs! I had Aggy, she killed it. Price was 47 (w/o tip) for a men's cut (which is not bad for Williamsburg). She took her time, listened to two people's opinions, and made small adjustments at the end. She was very cool, and friendly, and seemed to really enjoy turning my hair into PERFECTION. HOWEVER, Now I have to keep a hat on, so none of the fine NY ladies see how sexy I look,. I'm also gettin' a bit tired of the papparazzi mistaking me for famous models and celebrities, i'd subtract a star for that if it was her fault for being such a skilled stylist. I'm not sure I can even express how much I love this place. First of all it is so tastefully decorated, and secondly it the home to amazing stylists. The owner, Kim, is not only the most knowledgeable, patient, talented and professional stylist I know, she is literally the only person I trust to touch my hair. This is my first ever review, so this cut was that good. I live in the neighborhood and walk by this place often. My usual spot didn't have a last minute opening so I tried out roots. I made a same day appt and was seen right on time. Harix was my stylist and he listened to everything I had to say about what I wanted and how I wanted it. He spent his time and was not rushed. I am very happy with my cut and will be coming back again! The only thing I'm unclear about is tipping? There was no tip line on my cc receipt and I didn't have cash. I hope I didn't give the impression that I didn't enjoy the haircut. The haircut was a great straightforward experience with a stylist who knew what he was doing. The worst salon I had yet to experience. Not only that their stylists and receptionist are incompetent and don't know what they're doing. They are thieves, scammers and dishonest about their fee. The hair dresser had no clue what she was doing. Even after I explained in length and multiple times how I wanted my hair to be layered and showed her pictures. She had No style, no creativity or experience whatsoever. Paid over a $100 in total for a useless haircut that had no shape or anything to it. Earlier they Charged me for a 30 second consultation and when I objected they said that I can use it towards any service in the future only to deny it later saying that "they changed their policy" and they are sorry for not being able to award the consolation fee towards the service and that "I can call the police if I don't like it". Also, many of the 5 stars reviews here are posted by their staff, close friends or fake accounts. I will file a complain with NYC consumer affairs so you don't go on scamming people like this. read more

This is my favorite place for hair coloring. I've been going to Kim on and off for many years now and she is always straight up with what is possible and doesn't rush things - she truly wants your hair to be healthy. Years ago I came to Kim with many layers of box dye black hair and over a course of a handful of sessions we were able to achieve a very nice blonde. I made the mistake last year of redying my hair black and going to another salon to bleach it multiple times in 1-2 sittings and ended up with gummy and ruined hair! After that I ran back to Kim and she helped cut and color my hair a little darker to make it appear healthier & we also came up with a game plan together on how to get me blonde again once my hair gets healthier. I've been coming here for two years and love my stylist. Unfortunately, a few days ago I scheduled and confirmed an appointment but when I called two hours beforehand to double check that I had the correct time, I was informed that my stylist would not be coming in and that they rebooked me with another stylist. I've always seen a senior stylist, but they decided to rebook me with a junior -- and apparently it didn't dawn on anyone that they should maybe let me know. I get that things happen, but the fact that no one bothered to call me to let me know that there had been a change is completely unprofessional. I live in Chelsea and work in Midtown and if I hadn't happened to call, would have gone completely out of my way to Williamsburg to learn this information in person. While I'm sure a junior stylist is perfectly competent, I specifically requested a senior stylist. In addition to this unannounced change being unprofessional, I find it odd that the salon thinks their junior and senior stylists are so interchangeable. read more

I've had a hard time finding a stylist since a stylist I loved moved away a few years ago. I heard of Roots Radical and a quick scan of yelp reviews told me Kim was good with unmanageable curly hair -- total game changer. She was the most patient hair stylist I've ever seen, walking me through how to better care for my hair and showing me step by step how to help the curls do their thing. Literally the worst salon I have ever gone to. Save your money (and trust me you'll be spending a lot) and go elsewhere. I read so many good reviews so I was so optimistic about going here. I asked for an extremely light blonde. I was very open with what I wanted as long as I had a super light blonde in it. (Ombre to light blonde, or light blonde all over). I showed a couple pictures of things I would be happy with, all basically the same thing--a very light blonde. I SPECIFICALLY expressed I did not want a caramel-y color and thats exactly what I left with. Whats even worse is that the stylist kept expressing how you should never dye your hair a caramel color because it looks horrible. I should have told them I wasn't happy while I was still there, especially because I paid $300, but of course I felt too awkward because when she was done the stylist said "Do you like it? You'd be insane if you didn't. If you didn't like this we'd probably all talk about you after you left." Since I felt too weird to say anything in person I decided to email when I got home that night. I attached pictures showing what I wanted versus what I actually got. After a few emails with no response (which is understandable because they were out of the office) my mom called to complain since I was working all day and couldn't talk and we wanted to talk with them as soon as possible. She treated me to the appointment so she's extremely mad thats what her money went to. She called and they told her the manager would call back, and of course she never did. So she called back again and talked to her and tried to reason with her. The manager was extremely rude and persistent and said that I never showed any pictures of what I wanted. Basically calling me a liar. I'm not sure why she would lie about this considering I had someone there with me who saw and heard everything the entire time. At this point they're basically playing he said/she said and of course my word will never be anything against the manager. Finally when my mom expressed how upset and unhappy I was with what I received the manager said "well thats the risk you take when getting your hair dyed." For a salon that charges that much money for a hair color I think they'd have a bit better customer service. I will definitely never go back to this salon. read more

This is the first review I've given but this place is just too good. I read other reviews and made an appt with Kim. I needed it quick and it wasnt difficult making the appointment. I have been to salons far and wide and paid $500 for color/cut in palm beach, miami, etc but none have been as good as her and I just can't say enough good things about my experience here. I walked out paying $240 but it was possibly the best $240 I have ever spent- Kim spent a long time talking with me about exactly what I wanted and fixed my brassy blonde hair with trashy roots to the most beautiful, toned, natural looking highlighted hair. Best highlights, cut, and blowout I've ever had and she was so nice and chill the entire time. I walked out with Victorias secret hair with a cut that looks great whether I blow it out or just let it dry naturally (first time that has happened with my very thick sometimes frizzy/wavy mane). I'm giving this place 5 stars because of the beautiful job Jamie did this week for me. I have thick, heavy wavy hair that is prone to frizz and fly-aways. I was in desperate need of a cut and color and Jamie listened to what I wanted. She especially did a great job interpreting the color I wanted despite my trouble describing it. Plus, after 27 years of hair cuts, she is the only stylist who has ever been able to style my hair curly without a ton of gross product or frizz. Girl knows what's up. At the recommendation of a coworker, I decided to try Roots Radicals. I made a Saturday appointment and Leigh was my stylist. She's a rad girl who knows what she's doing. I explained how I wanted to go darker for Fall and we decided to do a dark chocolate base with some caramel highlights partially placed. She also cut off a few inches and brought back my bangs that had grown out during the summer. At the end of the appointment my hair was dark, shiny and beautifully blown out. It looked great and Leigh said the color was super natural. Although it was expensive, I left a happy customer. After I got home and was able to more closely examine it, I realized that I couldn't really see the highlights through the dark brown base color. I gave it a few washes to see if the color would wash out a little more and the highlights would be more prevalent, but it just seemed to be one solid color. I even asked a few friends to make sure I wasn't crazy. After considering my options, I decided to just pop in after work and talk to Leigh about it. I figured I spent $110 on the highlights alone and should at least be able to see that they're there. A potentially awkward conversation was avoided because Leigh was really cool and happy to give it another go with the highlights. She booked me for the following night. I went in after work and she went back in with foils and produced a more prevalent highlighted caramel color. It was still natural looking, but now there was actually a visual contrast. Leigh handled my requests professionally and knows her stuff. I will definitely return to see her! read more

Had an awesome experience here earlier this week. Hadn't been to a salon in over a year and a half because last time I got my hair colored it somehow ended up literally dark purple when I had asked for a medium warm brown. Traumatizing! I vowed to never put my hair in the hands of others again, but eventually (18 months later) it was beyond ratty and in serious need of freshening up. Plus I had, like, 6 gray hairs and was losing my mind over them. I saw Natalia and told her that I wanted to do a super-subtle reverse ombré--ie, dye my roots and the top of my hair a shade or two darker and leave the rest as is to create a slight gradation. Also, a serious bang trim. She was totally into it, communicated really well, and even offered me a glass of white wine to sip while she was at work (which I gladly accepted). I was in and out in just over an hour with a cut and color, and it came out perfectly! Plus, pretty reasonably priced compared to some other salons in the area that I had checked out. I've never felt inspired before to ever call a hairstylist an "expert". There are a lot of people who can give you a good cut, but before I went to Leigh, I've never felt like the person with the scissors approached the cut analytically, and the result of that is one that has given me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. She knows her stuff, obviously, and will engage with you about why she thinks something will or will not work (the latter of these, I think, is really underrated; not all hairstyles look good on all people, and I want to know which won't work on me before I leave with a bad style, even if it's a good cut), and she has the technical skills to pull it off. She really listens to what you want, gives good feedback, and completely delivers. She's also a total blast to talk to. I will absolutely be going back for all future haircuts, as long as Roots Radicals is around, and will be telling exactly all of my friends about how awesome this experience was. Related/unrelated; La Locanda next door is a great dinner spot after or before your fabulous new haircut. The Penne a la Vodka is the best thing on the menu. read more

I will never come back here. This is the worst salon experience I've ever had. There is no way these positive reviews are real... I walked in and the 5 people who work here just stared at me. It's like none of them have ever smiled in their entire lives. The tense atmosphere was so awful. They made me feel like I was intruding. The entire time I was getting my hair cut it was like the person cutting it wasn't even paying attention. She kept walking away to talk to her coworkers. I ended up looking way worse leaving than I did when I walked in. It was so expensive and it was so disappointing because I rarely get my hair cut and I had read the great reviews on here and thought this place has to be great. Wrong. I few weeks ago I impulsively decided to do something drastic with my hair. I have really thick, heavy hair which I've kept as a long brown bob for the last year, but previously it went down to my waist and has been dyed every shade imaginable from platinum blonde to black over the last 10 years. I think of myself as a rather fashionable person, and I'm also a designer, so when it comes to hair I am VERY particular with who I trust to cut and color it but I'm also willing try a new look when the feeling strikes me. Knowing all this, I did some research online regarding who I might go to in order to achieve the Mia Farrow a la Rosemary's Baby/Michelle Williams/Jean Seburg blonde pixie cut. (I'll also mention that I live in Philly and have had the same guy do my hair for the last 7 years -- including when I was living in LA for 5 of those years and would wait to get my hair done until I was at home.) Anyway! I found Roots Radicals through the grape vine and booked an appointment with Jamie. Let me just say that this is THE BEST cut and color I have ever had in my life and I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience at Roots Radicals. I have never received so many compliments on one hair cut in my entire life. Across the board, friends, family, co-workers, my bosses, strangers (not kidding), EVERYONE has gone out of their way to say how amazing the transformation is. Beyond that, the vibe of the salon itself, the prices, the attention to detail and professionalism of everyone I came into contact with in the salon was amazing. Even the clientele! Men, women, young, old--everyone walked out beaming from ear to ear and looking chic. I was imagining before I went in that this would a tough look for a stylist to execute on the first try and to expect something to be a little off here and there. But let me tell you! Yes. Just yes to Kim Jones and her staff. Very sweet, and totally honest and will give you genuine advice for what's best for you and your hair. I went in today, after making the mistake of getting my hair cut elsewhere. She blow dried it, just to see the cut. Then took it upon herself to fix my hair cut, free of charge. Initially I went to get balayage highlights, which she eventually told me wouldn't be good for my hair right now. Instead she recommended keratin, told me to repair my hair's texture and not worry about color. It's so refreshing to know that there are actually honest, straightforward and concerned hair stylists out there- in NYC nonetheless. Kim won me over, I'll be going back soon. read more
