Went for lunch with a friend, had one appetizer, one salad with protein and two nonalcoholic drinks and after tip it was just over $100. Come dine at the Rose Tavern at the Lake House!The service is top notch. Menu changes with the seasons. The steaks melt in your mouth. There are a few fish items as well. Just know everything is alacarte. There are no free rolls to fill you up before your entre but who wants all that bread anyways before a real gourmet meal? You can dine in the main dining room or sit at the enclosed patio which I highly recommend. The view of the grounds and outside fire pits are nice. You can also rent an igloo for your dining pleasure. Enjoy having your dessert in the library by the fire is so romantic. Reservations are a must. There is a dabs bar out back which is very nice if you want to have dinner on a little bit cheaper option and take in a football game. The wait staff is excellent and are the best at what they do and very attentive to your dining experience. They will suggest a menu item if you need help deciding on what to order. I suggest ordering the maple roasted Brussel sprouts to share they are so delicious that I could eat them every day if I could. Although it looked to be cooked perfectly, it chewed like rubber. To spend $60 on a 14 ounce steak I expected a much better outcome. We had an AMAZING experience at Rose Tavern! I was not expecting much since it was in the new hotel, but I was definitely wrong! First of all, the decor is awesome! (casual but elegant and fresh at the same time) It is hard to get a reservation so book early (since I think they save a lot of tables for hotel guests) but our table was ready before our reservation time. They have a lot of great drinks and the bar is super cute! The waitress helped us decide what to get and was very knowledgable. One other thing we loved is that you can see right into the kitchen, and some seats you can see the lake! The best part was obviously the food! We got the octopus app and the soup. The soup was excellent and the flavors of the octopus were so unique and fresh! My only complaint with the octopus was that it was a little chewy and was served in a bowl so hard to cut. The main dishes were the star! We got lamb and steak that are served with your choice of sauce (amazing choices and the chimicurri was excellent). We also split the Brussel sprout side which was delicious, however a little undercooked. The meat was cooked to perfection and was SO flavorful. We will definitely be going back just for the meat alone! They cook it over oak embers in a hearth. We loved our experience and can't wait to go back! read more

The Rose Tavern is a disaster from the word go when it comes to dinner. We arrived on time- but it took fifteen minutes to get seated for a party of 9 despite a half full restaurant. There was a line of people waiting on the one hostess who was doing her best with no support from the management staff. After seating, we tried to order wine. We ordered three different times, each time being told the wines selected were not in stock. How do you have a Wine Spectator rated wine list and not keep it stocked? Each time we had to increase in price till we found something they actually had on the fourth try. However, it took over and hour for the wine to arrive. We had ordered appetizers for the whole party at the same time- which also took over an hour! For the first one hour and fifteen minutes, we had water- nothing else at all. When the wine and apps finally arrived, we ordered our main courses. Over an hour lapsed again before they were delivered, in spurts, over 10 minutes so each part of the table starting eating so their food would not get cold. We had now been at the restaurant over 3 full hours. When we asked to speak to a manager, he did nothing but makes excuses- there is a wedding rehearsal dinner on property so we are stretched, we always wait for apps to be delivered with wine (which is ludicrous), the kitchen was strained, you should have had a prix fixe menu (we we never told that or offered it, so how is that our fault??), and on he went. When we asked why the wine and apps took so long- the food and beverage manager was very busy delivering two other bottles....so he could not handle three tables in under an hour?????? His "solution" was to offer a $100 credit on a $2000 bill and free desserts. Are. You. Joking? You want us to sit around another hour at 1030 PM for mediocre free desserts??? This place suffers from horrible management. The sad part is, the wine list is in fact very good, if it were properly managed, the food is fine, not great, and the space is nice. The staff tries hard- our poor server could not apologize and try any harder, but could not get any help at all. But the management is incompetent, rude and simply a stain on the Lake House. read more

From the minute we walked in to an aloof host, we knew we were in trouble. Quite literally the WORST brunch I have ever had! It was a beautiful sunny day and at 12:45pm very few people there. We were seated at a tiny 2 top in the main area. Had to ask for a seat on the porch by the water, which is the point of eating on the lake. Walked into the porch area and sat down, looked around and there were 9 tables that had not been bussed. We ate our whole meal surrounded by dirty dishes. After taking 2 sips of wine noticed the glass was filthy even something crusty on the stem. They just poured my wine into a different glass and said the night staff has to polish the glasses better. The menu on line was not the current menu. My toast was burned black on one side and barely toasted on the other. Sent it back and in it's place they went the other way and I got warmish bread. The omelet was cold and rubbery, inedible. The garlic herb potatoes, tasted like frozen diced, deep fried potatoes from a fast food restaurant. This is supposed to be a fabulous high-end restaurant. My local diner has them beat by a mile. Paid over $60 for a breakfast for 2 that was HORRIBLE. I will pay anything for good food. This place looks the part, but can't deliver. From the moment we set foot on the property, we knew something was wrong. Beautiful location, but not worth the money. Host kept everyone waiting in a line for over 20 minutes. I have never experienced anything so rude and uncalled for. He had attitude from the moment he greeted us. Our food was terrible from the Caesar salad which had very little dressing, stale tiny croutons, and anchovies were placed on top of salad when we asked for them on the side (my husband likes them and I do not). The busboy took my salad and said he would get a new salad for me. The anchovies were scraped off the top and the salad was brought back. I could smell the fish from a mile away!! The drinks came at that point. Grey Goode martinis, slightly dirty with olives. They were made very dirty with old mashed up olives. I could make them much better at home for half the price. We then ordered medium rare steaks. Both steaks came out well done. At that point, we gave up and asked for the bill. The waitress was very pleasant, but did nothing to compensate for the very disappointing dining experience. Last, but not least, the washrooms were clean and had a very fancy concept of having cloth napkins to dry your hands. The baskets were empty at 5:30 and still empty at 7pm. I guess if you want to wash your hands, you have to dry them on your owns clothes. My advice, avoid this restaurant. You will leave very frustrated. read more

Will Never go here again. Be careful with this establishment. It's not the location or the food that is a problem, it's the payment system. Brought family out to a large dinner paid over $650, not including tip, and the charge was taken twice. Used a bank card and not a credit card and it locked up all that cash. Called the bank to open up a dispute and called the restaurant to report it and I was told by the restaurant "we see this happen a lot with large bills. They are looking into why this keeps happening." Are you kidding me? There are so many things wrong with that sentence I can barely think of where to start. This only happens with large bills? So it's not a payment system problem. As long as money is there, it should go through. for some reason when you have a large bill here it's taking it twice, so these people essentially are stealing your money for days. The explanation I was given, was that once the pending items post the duplicate would fall off, as if that's supposed to be better because it has locked up your money the whole time....The pending items posted and they did not fall off and now we're trying to get almost $700 back from these people and it has been a nightmare. read more

Our daughter and her boy friend were coming to visit for the 4th of July weekend. We made the reservation a month ahead, when, even at that early date, the only time slots was 5:00 or much later in the evening. I can understand it being a very popular weekend and everyone wanting to dine on the water. We arrived a few minutes early when the staff was still having their "pre-game" pep talk by the manager. The hostess came over promptly at 5:00. We were the first group to be seated. We asked to sit on the porch which had absolutely no one! We were told porch was booked by others which were coming later in the evening. Since we did not mention the porch when making our reservation we were not able to sit there. I pressed her a bit to sit on the porch and she was clearly annoyed. She tapped a few keys on the computer which did nothing more than make noise, looked up and said "No, it's clearly booked solid". We were seated in the restaurant. Our waiter was very attentive. We never had to ask for water. The men ordered the filet which was done to perfection - a nice crust on the outside and succulently tender on the inside. We split the asparagus and some fries. The waiter was very accommodating which I requested some balsamic vinegar for the asparagus. The ladies both order the scallops which came as 4 of the largest scallops I've ever seen, with a nice brown sear on the outside. They raved over their meal. It was a very good meal and good service. As we were about to leave, I stepped out to the porch to see how full it was - five open tables! (see photos). This restaurant has a wonder location, great food and good service, though a bit pricy ($325 for our table) . It's too bad our evening was sorely tainted by not being seated on the porch to enjoy the wonderful view. They should dump the young twit hostess and hire someone more pleasant and accommodating. The porch dining was far more casual than inside which is to be expected, what wasn't expected was the welcoming of pets on the screeened in sunporch. No, I'm not confusing rose tavern with the sandbar either. All in all, it was well over $100 for 2 glasses of wine and to split a burger and salad with rolls for the table. Honestly, don't let the description of bone marrow jus on the burger entice you too much, it didn't do anything for me. Still a greasy burger with no true flavor profile. I'd rather just go for wine- which I will continue to do. Try the sandbar or library bar for better ambiance and use of your $$. This was my second time eating at the Rose Tavern. First time was in January 2021 - it was an absolutely lovely evening for my wife and I...great food and excellent service, albeit expensive. However, worth the experience, I thought. I was wrong. We were so excited to return with my siblings and their spouses over July 4th weekend. 4 out of 6 people in our party showed up 15 minutes early and our table was ready. We asked if we could go to the bar (directly behind the hostess stand) for a drink while we waited for the rest of our group and take a quick walk around the grounds. 2 open seats at the bar plus the end section near the hostess stand, two bartenders (a younger guy and girl), plus a gentleman wearing a suit jacket seeming to work the bar. We politely waited at the end of the bar for about 7-10 minutes without being acknowledged or offered a menu. A group of 3 left their seats at the bar and so we moved to their seats. Another 5-7 minutes went by still with no acknowledgement from the bartenders nor even a "I'll be right with you." The younger guy bartender kept randomly drying bar glasses and the younger girl bartender carried on a full conversation with the people next to us and served them 2nd drinks while we waited. Even when I caught her attention to ask if she was able to take an order, she looked directly at me as if she heard me and then walked away. It was unclear if the guy wearing the suit jacket was a manager or a bartender or something else. He just kinda meandered around the bar, tapping the outside of his hand/nails on the metal surfaces while pretending to drop random liquids into drinks. Strange. He looked good doing it though. Lol. It had been 15 minutes, we had not been offered a menu or a hello and the rest of our group arrived, so we went back to the hostess to be seated. Upon telling the hostess (who was right behind us the entire time) we were ready to be seated, she cracked an awkward joke that went something like "Are you Mr. ...ohhh I am not even going to try to pronounce your last name." I politely responded "Ok...Yes that's us" (we had literally told the same girl our name when we checked in 15 minutes prior.) As she sat us down, she gave an almost sarcastic, over-acted "wellll....enjoyyyyy yourrr mealllll" comment while clearly rolling her eyes. One of the most bizarre experiences I have ever had in my life. Although the water service was prompt (more on that in a second), it took our waiter about 7-8 minutes to arrive at our table. Once he finally arrived at our table, he handed us a menu for food and drinks and then recited some canned, generic line about how "Chef uses a farm to table concept in all the menu items" as if it was some new, enlightened method of running a restaurant. It was just such a superficial, trite first impression. No offense to whoever came up with the line, however pretty sure everyone has been doing farm to table for the last 6-8 years and it would mean more if ya'll actually highlighted where/who the farm is that is ending up on our table (like on the oddly blank backside of your menu). Our waiter disappeared for probably another 10 minutes (best I could tell he had 2-3 other tables throughout the restaurant) before returning to take our drink order. It took a solid 15 additional minutes for our drinks to arrive from the bar. So if you are doing the math, we are averaging about 1 drink per 45-50 minutes at this point. If it had took another 5-10, I would have totally told the entire group let's go to Rio and have a fun evening. Lol. The rest of the meal went fine. The pace was really slow for the food, however once the food came it was well prepared and delicious. I would have ordered something more expensive (some of the steaks/etc. go for $50+), but honestly I was so frustrated and embarrassed by the poor service I stuck with the $19 burger; so as to not fork over any more $$$ then necessary. One thing, the only thing, I will say they did well was the water service. They must find the smallest water glasses possible and then instead of just leaving a large glass of water for the table to share, they insist on a water server filling it up every 1-2 sips. We must have had those poor, nice water servers come to our table 5-6 times before we received our first beverage at the table. Seems like a waste of people resources. At the end of the night, our group left totally confused and disappointed. Definitely would mark down as a 'not recommend' to friends and family in and visiting the area. I saw some announcement that the sister property the Sand Bar is closing temporarily due to staffing. Maybe this is a good sign, but I sure hope the management team is receptive to feedback from customers and local partners. Easy to blame COVID, but there is more going on here than just short staffing. It's poorly trained, poorly disciplined, poorly executed service...with a bit of a snarl each step of the way. My husband and I went to celebrate his birthday. The cocktails were so good! Perfectly made. Our entrees were incredible - husband had the duck and I had Gnocchi. Both dishes were unique and outstanding. The service was so nice. Our server was personable and so helpful. There was a little hiccup with one of our order items and she immediately corrected it with no issue at all. Can't wait to go back for the new menu next month. Our waitress Jenn was so accommodating and attentive, she made great recommendations and was so friendly. The food was out of this world! Quite possibly one of the best meals we have ever had. The portions were hearty and the flavors were outstanding. They even gave us complimentary desserts as an anniversary gift. After dinner, we took a tour of the stunning hotel and walked down near the water. It was such an amazing experience that made for the perfect anniversary date night. Left a bit disappointed. My parents came here for lunch and raved about it. We returned for my birthday dinner and I had a mixed experience. My parents had the bolognese and risotto and they were fabulous. The drinks were great as well. My boyfriend and I ordered steaks (filet $54, and strip $56) and they were very poorly prepared. The strip steak at "medium" had zero pink and was as dry as could be. My filet had a nice pink center but was charred black on the outside. I've had better meat at outback. I guess I'd say give them a shot, but stick to the traditional dishes. read more

I was disappointed with my dinner at the new Rose Tavern because the menu was so limited ( 4 entrees to choose from and one burger option) and pretentious. We had some very bland Ricotta toast to start, it needed some seasoning or something other than roasted broccoli to please our pallets. No dinner salad was offered ( everything is a l'carte) so we surprised at the tiny entrees when they served to us. My duck breast had only two small slices, on top of some tasteless vegetable puree ( maybe squash or carrot?) and 3 skinny, limp roasted carrots and a few sour cranberries on the plate. A side bowl of Buckwheat grains was brought out to me a bit later. It tasted very strange and I then asked if it could be substituted with some other starch ( perhaps wild rice, pilaf, risotto, pasta , potato, bread?) but only French Fries or onion rings were available, so I declined. What kind restaurant does not have bread or rice or potatoes with any of their entrees? My husbands beef ( only one kind available that evening) was Flat Iron Steak . It was served with a meaty gravy , four small parsnips and nothing else. For $42. you would expect at least something more on the plate! The steak was chewy not tender. The wine by the glass menu was also limited, but there is a full bar and many wines to buy by the bottle. We were still hungry so we split a dessert and had coffee and tea. Before the tip our bill was $130.for 3 glasses of wine & 2 entrees $12 for 2 slices of ricotta toast. that's about $20- $30 higher than a typical fine dining meal in Rochester. Go to Max's on Eastman place instead for that in Rochester. Locally in Canandaigua, go to Bon Ami Bistro for Duck l'orange, and Nick's Chop House for much better steaks. If you want Farm to Table cuisine , drive down to Naples and dine at Roots Cafe'. All better choices than the pretentious Rose Tavern. If you are staying at the Lake House eat dinner in the many restaurants on or near Main Street ( Simply Crepes, Reinblick, Bon Ami, Il Posto, Rio Tamlan, Nolans) and you will get better prepared food at much more reasonable prices. The music selections, which were, loud did not help make the evening enjoyable. The stark farm barn decor ( white wood walls , plank floors) simple chairs etc. does not match the offerings on the menu. This place does not know who it wants to be. Our server was good, the view out to the lake will be nice in summer , those are the only positive accolades I can give. read more

After a one night stay we went to the Rose Tavern for breakfast. The patio was very nice but after being seated it took about 15 minutes to receive our coffees. Following this we ordered our entrees which took at least an hour to arrive, not to mention the food was also cold. It was very hard to get our waters refilled and we were never asked if we wanted another coffee or beverage to drink. This restaurant was clearly very understaffed and was not up to par for what you would expect from a very high end and expensive hotel. Overall the grounds were very beautiful and this place has extreme potential, but if we ever decide to stay here again we would definitely leave the property to dine. read more

We were in town for family event and decided we needed to see it. Entire hotel NEW, as formerly known as Inn on the Lake for decades. Beautifully redone! The food is farm to table, for the most part. Having lived here, I knew many of the farms that supplied and was happy to see their goods on menu. I had the scallop dish which was the best dish among my table of diners. I understand the burger was very good too. Apps & drinks are fair. Menu is small and if you have any food allergies, it is even smaller. But cheerful and welcoming team. Drumroll...the location!! Oh that is best part. Make sure you save time to walk outside to see the beautiful lake and Squaw Island, especially at sunset. read more

Several months ago was the first time we ate at the Rose Tavern and noticed a "room delivery" charge on the bill, even though we ate dinner in person. We asked about the charge and were told that was their policy. The waitress seemed embarrassed to tell us that and eventually did remove the charge. This past weekend, we stayed overnight on Saturday for a close family friend's wedding & reception on the premises. When we checked out on Sunday, we noticed a hefty charge on our bill for The Rose Tavern from Saturday night. When we inquired and explained it was not us because we were there for the wedding, we were told that someone had eaten dinner at the restaurant and charged it to our room. We explained it was not us, that we were guests at the wedding, and we did not order dinner from the Rose Tavern. They were not willing to remove the charge at the moment and have not yet done so. On Monday, we called, and they told us what was on the order to see if it "rang a bell" with us. First, we had already explained that we were at the reception. Second, the order in question was shrimp, and I have a severe fish/seafood allergy. After explaining this, we were told they would get back to us. We have called every day, and left messages. However, they only keep telling us they are looking into it but have yet to rectify it. This is absurd, considering that we know how much the wedding cost and how much we paid to stay there for the night. It is disappointing that both times we have been there, we have had a similar issue. read more

Last week I had lunch with 3 other women at the Rose Tavern. I have to say that everything we were served was delicious. The dining room with a view of the lake was lovely. "Seasonal soup" was pumpkin soup (in April?) but OK. Complaints: Both chicken salad orders contained chicken bones - a choking or mouth stabbing issue. The waitress didn't apologize or or offer another choice. One of us had the strawberry rhubarb dessert. It was served without warning in an All Clad casserole. She touched the handle and burned her finger to the point of blistering. Again, no apology but the waitress did bring over a cup of crushed ice. I ordered an iced tea. Served in a pretty small / narrow glass and mostly ice. My experience is that iced tea refills are usually free and I ordered a refill. Another small glass. I was charged for 2 iced teas at $3.50 each! Iced tea is cheap! When we arrived we used the ladies room. When we left there was a man there to put fresh flowers in the ladies room and he asked if it was empty. He had put a pot of flowers on the floor outside just to the right of the door, in addition to the ones he was carrying. No warning. I almost fell over them. I answered a survey from the Rose Tavern itemizing these complaints. And my friend who was burned called the manager and left a message on the answering machine. Neither of us have received a response. Not only is the Rose Tavern failing to meet certain safety standards, but they clearly do not care to address them. It's hit or miss at this restaurant. Sometimes the food is great, but other times it sits under a heat lamp and comes out dry and over cooked. They definitely need to work on their timing. We had a wonderful meal. We didn't have a reservation so the staff found a creative way to serve us dinner In the cocktail/fireplace area. Not only was it romantic but the dinner was superb and the service was outstanding! Kudos to Rose Tavern! read more
