    Fried Chicken over Rice
    Anqi H.

I got the fried chicken over rice and hot black milk tea for delivery. It took about 45 min from when they accepted my order to when it was delivered. My milk tea was still hot! There were actually two fried chicken legs in there. The food quality was as good as dining in. I would get it again. My only complaint is the milk tea was taped over on the lid to avoid spillage, and the delivery guy held the cup. I wish they had a separate cup carrier to minimize contact during this pandemic season.

Eggplant with Garlic Sauce over Rice

The eggplant with garlic sauce was a little oily but overall pretty good. It's a great spot for lunch. I placed an order over phone and picked it up with it 12 minutes. The prices are decent as well; $8-$14 typically. This is probably the closest good Asian place to CMU. Would recommend!

Fried chicken over rice and yogurt green tea

I have conflicting feelings on Rose Tea Cafe. On on hand I've come here SO OFTEN the past few years. The tea isn't bad and I really enjoy their fried chicken, but there's just so much about this place that is just objectively not good. The good: fried chicken, taro cake, tea (kind of. I think the branch in squirrel hill is maybe better in terms of tea quality), close to CMU campus The bad: a bit watery tea, marinated meat rice can be too salty, waiting area can be a bit congested, all the vegetables are just frozen mixed veggies, and things here are cash only for things less than $5. Plus, now that Night Market Gourmet is open, you can get much of the same dishes for much higher quality and the same price (including said fried chicken over rice. The Night Market Gourmet version even comes with actual vegetable sides!!) The ugly: THIS WAS IN THE SQUIRREL HILL BRANCH BUT once I ordered a curry thing and the vegetables in it tasted spoiled. Vaguely sour and bad.

It was a crazy hot day and we were walking from CMU to the Natural History museum and spotted this bubble tea shop around the corner. Bubble tea sounded really good so we decided to stop in. We didn't really look at reviews pior but now that I see it, I understand why the ratings were so low. The lady behind the counter was impatient for us to order and wasn't very friendly while we tried to decide what we wanted. She was quick making our order after it was placed though. The bubble tea came out pretty diluted and a bit on the bland side - I wish they used a stronger tea and maybe less milk?! The boba was good, though not the best I've ever had. They were maybe slightly overcooked. The only thing I liked was that the bubble tea wasn't overly sweet - but this is probably more due to the fact that it was diluted and not because they deliberately made it less sweet. They do not have an option to adjust/choose your sweetness level. Maybe they are better in their slushy/food options, because there is a dine-in area in the small cafe. But I don't think I'll drop in again anytime soon.

Over priced bowl of pepper beef noodle

I was in search of some Asian food while walking around the campus. So I saw an Asian walking towards me with a bento box and a boba tea... So I thought to myself; "I think there must be some Taiwanese food straight ahead." Short moment later, I saw another one in the same attire. That confirmed my intuition that I must be in the right path towards some Asian food. As I continue to walk; two more Asian with boba tea! That confirmed there must be some Taiwanese/Asian food close by. Surely enough, I found the restaurant! I ordered black pepper beef with noodles. For $10.00... I'm not sure it's exactly worth the money. There's literally 6 pieces of meat and one piece of green onion tossed with spaghetti in a pre made black pepper sauce. Come on... If you're going to claim yourself as Taiwanese food; at least toss it with Taiwanese type of noodles. The bowl surely fills your tummy, but can probably get better food elsewhere for the same price

Good value for authentic Taiwanese food - braised pork over rice was very delicious and balanced with veggies.

We ordered takeout this time, and the overall experience was great. We placed an order online, and everything was very neatly packaged and ready to go when expected. The food even travelled fairly well, such that it was still in good shape after traveling home. The restaurant itself is in a bit of a drab strip mall, but it's generally nicely decorated with colorful signage and a nicely kept interior. In terms of the food, the shrimp spinach dumplings were really nicely done, with lots of flavor and texture. My partner especially enjoyed the barbecue pork bao, which were nicely steamed with a very flavorful filling. The egg tart was good, but not really my thing. It had a bit of a caramelized sugar flavor reminiscent of waffles with syrup. The spicy oil splashed noodles, one of the noodle dishes on the menu, was generally lacking: some nice toppings, but not much flavor. Overall, this is a nice little place that seems to be fairly well run. I suggest going for the dim sum and giving up on expectations for anything on the menu that isn't dim sum. Find another restaurant for your main course.

They have a series of vegetarian appetizers, but that's not their focus. In terms of the overall experience, the staff is very friendly and on top of things. We ordered takeout, but the online ordering site didn't give us a confirmation of our order. A quick call to the restaurant confirmed that everything was received and already in process. In terms of the food, the wood ear mushrooms and tofu skins was a clear winner. The broccoli was fine, but I would have preferred Chinese broccoli or watercress if they were available. The five spiced eggplant was fine: steamed to a custard-like level of softness, then paired with a salty sauce and served cold. The dan dan noodles were probably best suited for a dine-in experience and didn't really travel well. My partner tells me that the stuffed pork buns were good, but the solid piece of pork in the center was less optimal than something shredded or thinned out with some vegetable matter. All told, this was a good experience. The vegetarian appetizers were good but not exceptional. The various noodle and bun dishes were very nicely crafted. The hand made noodles were a particularly nice touch, with a lot more flavor and texture than I would have ever expected. If I have any requests, it would be for more vegetable centric noodle options.

When I came to Pitt, it became routine that I grabbed a bubble tea once a week before class or as a treat on the weekends. I am always sure to stop in and grab my favorite drink if I am in the area. I love the bright interior of the shop and that there is inside seating, so you can enjoy your drink inside (especially during the colder months in PA). Its location on Forbes Ave makes it fairly easy to get to, especially if you are a student living on Pitt's campus. Do yourself a favor and grab a bubble tea if you are ever in the area!

I wouldn't really call this a supper club to be honest but the place definitely carries a house music bar vibe and the back bar area and seating is very dimly lit, perfect for cozying up and enjoying a drink late night. The ladies' room was so dark, I mistook it for a storage area because I could only make out a white ladder in the corner that was being used as cute shelving. The place is seat yourself. Our waiter was not super friendly and didn't offer to give us napkins or anything when our wobbly table caused our drinks to splash all over the place. The cook served our chicken with a big smile and happy interaction and we really loved his personality. The bartender also stopped by to bus our table and he was very pleasant as well. We enjoyed the perfectly fried small plate cauliflower with the plum sauce and the fried cheese/garlic wonton bites with the sriracha mayo spicy dipping sauce. The fried chicken breast on the large plate was slightly overcooked with a maple gochuchang sauce that was very bland. We were so thankful that the large plate fried chicken came with a side salad to offer some respite from the heaviness of the fried dishes. It would have been great to have some side acidic or fresh vegetable options like Kimchi or something. Maybe we tried the wrong dishes and there are other not fried things that are delicious? The dirty martini cocktail was just so-so, not really much flavor at all, but the mojito was very good and refreshing. It's probably a good late-night place for a bite and drink.
