They charge over $800 per hour. I used Rosenthal Plumbing for years. Always a good job at a reasonable price. Things have changed. I had a leaking Laundry shot off valve that needed replacing and a Moen Flo water leak monitor was installed. I checked the price of it on Amazon , $608-$747. It took one man all day to complete the work. About 7 hours. I am very satisfied with the job. However , the price was outrageous, $6800.00 . Subtract the Moen that leaves $6053 for 7 hours labor or $864.71 per hour. I asked for a breakdown of the bill , I was ignored. read more

There were four jobs I called them to come do , but one main one which was the thermostat system. I told them on the phone that that was the main reason I was having them come. When the plumber got here he said he doesn't do that at all. Two of the other jobs, he also did not know how to do. The fourth job, which took five minutes, he did know how to do, but I had to pay $300 for a five minute job, which would've been significantly less if I had done the work with the other jobs. I had to call another plumber and start over. I just wish they had told me on the phone that they couldn't do the job to begin with. read more

Wildly poor customer service. I had a shower pipe break beneath my foundation and hired Rosenthal to pull a toilet and camera the line to determine the issue. The service tech promised to call with results the following day -- but three weeks later, after leaving six messages (including three specifically asking for the manager), no one has ever returned a call. We received no useful information from the visit, my tenant was inconvenienced for nothing, and I've now lost three weeks of progress while needing to hire another plumber and disrupt the tenant again. Sadly, we bought the house that used to be owned by Rosenthal. The owner gutted the house and added a 2nd story and a radiant heating system. Fast forward to when we bought it 13yrs later. We couldn't get anyone at Rosenthal to help us with the heating system. It didn't come with any manuals or instructions on how to use it. I begged them to come out and help us, but unless I actually had them do any other work, I kept getting ghosted. 5yrs ago, we broke down and hired them to install a water softener. During that time, we were told they would replace the entire heating system since the current one was 20yrs old, at a cost of 20-30k. We brought in numerous other plumbers/HVAC people that were certified for Viessman (the system in place, that is a beast and borderline commercial) and every single one of them stated it was not going anywhere and we had plenty of years worth of use on it. Re the water softener, this year we felt after 5yrs of not softening the water (very hard water here), ruining our pipes and faucets, not to mention our skin and hair, we opted for a salt based system. When it was installed, they realized that what Rosenthal installed for us was never hooked up to the hot water. 5yrs and 4000 bucks later, thanks Rosenthal. So not only were they worthless in a heating system they installed, they also didn't install the water softener correctly. Stay away from them. read more

I called Rosenthal Plumbing to replace a noisy Water Heater motor just days before Christmas. They were very efficient in getting back to me ,and setting up a same day service check. One of their service experts named Marco, looked at the situation, and was able to install a new water heater motor and surrounding piping in just a few hours . Got a new silent motor .The old one had been vibrating the adjacent wall in the house . That noise , had disturbed me for years . He also raised the water pressure just a bit in the house ,which was a great surprise . Honest ,clean work that solved more problems than I knew I had . The most expensive plumbing company I've ever encountered, and beware of them moving forward with work prior to approval. My tenant needed a toilet unclogged. I called Rosenthal to ask whether they would be able to come out the same day. They did not say yes or no, but said a plumber would reach out to me. I did not give permission for my tenant to approve work and asked the dispatcher for the plumber to reach out to me. Within 15 minutes someone had arrived at my tenant's location and gotten my tenant to acknowledge receipt of a bid for $225 for 5 minutes of work. I was unavailable by phone during this 15 minute period and had no idea someone would be arriving so quickly because the dispatcher said she didn't know if anyone was available that day. I called back within minutes of receiving a missed call from an unknown number (the plumber). The missed call number did not pick up, so I called the Rosenthal dispatcher. The dispatcher said the plumber had already performed the work because my tenant signed acknowledgement of the bid. In defense of my tenant, I do not think bid acknowledgement constitutes approval. When I initially reached out to Rosenthal, I was just calling a number of plumbers to see if anyone was available that day. I ended up with the work completed for what seems to be an excessive amount without my approval before I even knew they were at the location. Of course, I paid it because the work had been done and my tenant had acknowledged the bid, but I would never use Rosenthal again. Afterward, I contacted Rosenthal to ask whether $225 was the standard rate for this 5 minute service, and she said she did not know the rate, that it essentially auto populates. She also hadn't known whether anyone would be available that day. She said my tenant acknowledging the bid meant that the work was approved, even though I had told initially when I reached out that I was the person to contact, not my tenant. Also, when I spoke to the plumber over the phone, he tried to sell me a new toilet for $1200. read more

I scheduled a service call with them and they gave an 8 hour window. They text the night before with a reminder and verification of the appointment. They sent a text the morning of verifying the appointment and asking if 40 minutes was enough lead time, I said yes. After taking the day off they called just before noon and said they couldn't make the appointment and wanted to reschedule for 3 days later. I called Rosenthal to install a new kitchen faucet and water purification system. They'd done work for us in the past that we were pleased with, however their business model has changed, and now the technician spends time walking around looking at every single thing that is plumbing related in the house, then giving a package quote, one price for what you called him out for, and others for things that you didn't. Long story short, this took time. We paid $1,700 to get our faucet and water purifier installed, which is crazy expensive (we bought the water purifier online, not from Rosenthal). I felt ripped off. In addition, I had showed the plumber the hot water spigot in our primary bathroom (less than 6 months old) - it was a thin stream, unlike the cold spigot. He told me I would need a new ceramic disc for the hot water, so I ordered it (it was under warranty, thank goodness). This took time, energy, and effort. When the part came in, I called a different plumber (Brad's Plumbing - no way I was having Rosenthal come back out) who looked under the sink and saw that the hose was kinked! He unkinked it and it worked perfectly! He was astounded that the Rosenthal plumber hadn't even looked under the cabinet. I went to all that time and trouble based on a plumber who didn't even bother to look under the sink. The guy did do a good job installing the water purifier and the faucet, but we will not be using them again. I don't like the business model and felt taken advantage of. read more

Way too expensive! My garbage disposal broke, and they hit me with a $1,100 estimate. Disposals themselves are only $150-$250, so that's about $800 just for labor? When I asked for their hourly rate, they just said, "We don't do it like that." The whole experience was terrible. The technician went through a cringey corporate sales pitch on his tablet, then started asking about my bathroom and water heater--completely unrelated to fixing the disposal. They even took pictures of everything. After disappearing to his truck for 30 minutes, he returned with the quote. Rosenthal Plumbing has great customer service and goes out of their way to make sure that the job is completed correctly. They are good at communication. I was on call for a job and I was kept abreast of the chances of getting an appointment situation throughout the day. They were eventually able to come to my house that afternoon and give me a bid for the work I wanted done. They were then able to come out the next day to do the work. They told us what they were doing as they did the work and made sure that they had our permission to make any necessary changes. They also went in to detail about the work and gave us time to ask any questions. I used Rosenthal before and was impressed by their professionalism. And then they had the gall to say the basic was to repipe kitchen line for $5k! Of course they offered financing. Run away from this predatory vendor. I contacted Rosenthal after 2 other plumbers came to view the issue of a blocked drain under a stamped concrete patio. Plumber #1 ran a camera, said I had tree roots and needed a hydro flush which they didn't do. Plumber #2 looked at his camera, said I had a break in the pipe,and called a day or so later and said it would be $14k-$20k to repair. I was fortunate to have technician Alex Senegal from Rosenthal come out. He was patient, diligent and committed to locating the problem and fixing it, He explored every drain pipe using his camera and locator and using the photos I had of the drainage pipes. It took several days of trial and error and strategizing on a method of exposing the break without cutting into the patio but he was successful and made the repair for a fraction of the previous estimate. I can't acknowledge Alex enough for his skill, many insights and mostly patience in dealing with a panicked homeowner. Please put Alex on the short list for Employee of the Year! We've relied on Rosenthal Plumbing services for several years now, and have always had good experiences with their friendly techs! :-) Most recently, we discovered that there was a considerable amount of white, house paint creating a "soft clog" inside our upstairs, primary bathroom shower/bath drain! ...We just bought this house at the end of July 2022, so we're still finding all the big and little bugs within/about it. This one created quite an ordeal, and we ended up having to replace a bunch of piping in our wall (as well as drywall and stucco replacement afterward)! Ugh. :-( The situation was quite unfortunate and costly, but our tech on this project -Jordan Warden- handled it with compassion, courtesy and great professionalism! PGE hired those issues at Davey tree to trim power lines in our area. They parked on my water main and broke it, and of course nobody took responsibility for anything. Davey tree has amnesia and PGE as usual claims is not their problem. Regardless, I had an enormous water bill and a river across my driveway. Most plumbers wanted to charge me 20p bucks just to come look because apparently Ben Lomond is sooooo far out of the way from Santa Cruz. Rosenthal didn't bat an eye. Came right out, got right to it. It took 2 days to fix, and Rosenthal had to hire the leak detectors to pinpoint the break which was "gasp" right where the f'ing for tracks were. The tech gave me options for a band aid, a maybe permanent fix, and a complete replacement of my 400 foot water main. They gave me all the pros and cons and let me decide how to proceed. Came out twice to make sure their estimate was accurate, and we pulled the trigger on the whole thing. Rosenthal sent a different crew to replace the main. Also very good, very professional, hard working guys. I would not hesitate to use them again and have recommended then to all my neighbors. read more

I can't believe this... the plumber came to inspect our property, he pointed out there is a leak in our guest bathroom. We purchased the place 6 months ago and there was no leakage problem. No one has lived down there in the past 6 months and never had we ever encountered leakage problem till now! Apparently after he inspected our bathroom, it started having water leaking problem! He told me I need to have it fixed asap but he will help me "tighten it" so it wouldn't leak. But he was loosening it! The plumber purposely left it loose so it would flood our bathroom. I only found out today since we are never in the guest room. The whole bathroom is flooded with mold. He gave us a quote estimate 10k to replace our water tank including fixing the water leak problem that he started. Again we never had leak problem but apparently we do now i just had to tighten the knob to stop the leaking. I can't believe this. Such a shitty thing to do. I don't even know what I'm suppose to do...we don't have the money to remodel the bathroom and can't afford the 10k to replace water tank. Honestly, if you want business from people. I've only written a few reviews over the years but when I receive great customer service from a business, I feel it's important to let others know when you have a positive experience with a company. Our home had a problem with a leaking water heater, a leak that originated inside the water heater and so a replacement would be needed. On a lark, with many companies to choose from, I called Rosenthal Plumbing since they were fairly close by. Best decision I could've made, from start to finish. A highly professional and pleasant woman answered the phone and took my details. She said someone would call me. Very soon, Anthony called and asked some questions. He said they'd send someone out soon. And Jordan arrived within a day I think it was. He inspected every aspect of my home plumbing, even crawling beneath the house in areas I won't go, and he even took pictures of items that needed attention. He put paper booties on his shoes when he came inside the house to keep everything clean. Jordan checked out the water heater and advised me on the correct heater to buy, along with a couple options, like warranty length and such. I was pleased that Rosenthal did everything electronically and my info was sent directly to the company as Jordan and I finished speaking. Jordan let me know that Mike would be coming out to perform the replacement. I felt so relieved when I heard that Mike had a couple decades of experience with this type of job. Mike arrived and went right to work, replacing the old water heater with a high-quality one that was up to modern standards. He was done before I knew it, and we finished my credit card transaction right there at the tailgate of his work truck. Mike cleaned up the job site and was on his way. (The only trace that a plumbing company had been there was a little rubber washer I found a week later in the driveway.) Jordan and Mike were both so professional and helpful, friendly and informative, expertly answering all the questions I had. They were easy and fun to talk with. In fact, everyone I interacted with at Rosenthal Plumbing did a great job and kept me apprised of everything going on during the quick replacement process. If you're looking for any sort of plumbing work, you can't do better than Rosenthal Plumbing. I didn't have to worry about a thing. I called Rosenthal to repair/replace a garbage disposal. the service itself was great and he checked absolutely every place having to do with water in our house. However, all that was needed was to replace the garbage disposal, which is what we expected. ($100 roughly). He did that well. But the bill was over $800! Rosenthal Plumbing is the most expensive company that I have ever worked with. $647 for 27 minutes of labor. We needed to have the control board replaced on our water heater. We supplied the replacement part, ourselves. I had to hurry for another appointment, so I told the tech, Brad, that I gave permission for my adult son to approve the estimate and pay for it, and that we needed to get the work done, no matter what, because of something going on next week. That was my mistake. I assumed I could trust that they would charge a reasonable rate, because I had read so many great reviews. This was a small and very straight forward job that I thought wouldn't possibly be more than $300. So, I was stunned when my son told me it was $647. As I was leaving, I asked Brad why it cost so much and he said - Because of all the wires and the time. I asked how long it was going to be and he said he was finishing up. So, the time was next to nothing. From the time he arrived to the time he left was 1 hour. From the time the approval was signed to the time he left was 27 minutes. I honored my word and paid, but I reached out to Rosenthal's office to ask if this was on par with their normal pricing. They stood by the price, so I will not use Rosenthal ever again. It's clear that I was taken advantage of because I was trusting. Lesson learned. read more

Overpriced and potentially deadly If you're looking for a quality plumber in Santa Cruz, go somewhere else. Check out my recommendation of the other guy (from Boulder Creek). The in-laws hired these guys 10 years ago to install a tankless water heater in our cabin on the river. When it went on the fritz last summer they quoted us $3800-$4200 to replace it and insisted we replumb the place. We purchased a similar new one from the plumbing supply house for $800 and found someone else to install it, saving us about $2500. In the process of the new installation, it was discovered that these idiots hooked up the recirculator to the cold instead of the hot. What's worse is that they failed to vent the exhaust, from the old one, to the outside but left the carbon monoxide fumes to vent in the attic. (See pics) No wonder the place always stank. I was tempted to give a one star as I'm angry. I have a Clean Water Filtration System for my well water. I engaged Rosenthal to do the rebuild. They did come out, rebuild the system, and it works and looks professional. However, the plumber told me the system was designed for outdoor installation and not to worry abut rain (we get 50-75 inches per year) or freezing temp. (we get 20-30 nights of mid 20's per year) and to keep out of direct sunlight (installed in direct afternoon sun). When I read over the instruction booklets, both said "indoor installation only, keep out of rain, freezing temp., and out of direct sunlight" Warranty void if it is installed under those conditions. I spent $4000. and have no warranty because of the installation. I was NOT informed before or after installation. When I contacted Rosenthal, they insisted it will be fine, and they install these systems outside all the time with no problem. They did admit that I have no warranty. They suggested that if I was concerned I could build a shed around the system. Is this good business? I think not. read more

I should have read the Yelp reviews first... Big mistake I did not do so. I asked for a quotation from Rosental Plumming to hook up a whole-house water filter to replace a 15year+ old filter. I bought the equipment for $2,000. The tech came out today to check the job. The only thing he should have to do is connect the plumbing. The job could have been done max in an hour by me. (The system came with self-installation instruction), I could have installed it by myself as all pipe connection was easily accessible is there. ( just got home from the hospital and I was told to bed rest and should not exert myself) I got an estimate of $3400.00 which is $1400 more than the filter tank cost with shipping. So I told them thanks but no thanks, and I sent the tech on his way, never to return again. read more

My only regret is that we did not contact them when we were looking for a plumber to replace our drains this past summer. If we had, we probably wouldn't be dealing with an incomplete job that still needs finishing four months later. We contacted Rosenthal because the technicians who replaced our heating ducts found trenches and a large amount of standing water under the house. They suggested we might need a sump pump so my husband called Rosenthal. Michael Vega showed up promptly the day of the appointment and was very courteous. He went under the crawl space, took some photos, and emerged about about 15 minutes later to give me the good news/bad news evaluation. The good news was we didn't need a sump pump. The bad news was the plumbing company that did our pipe and drain replacement did not finish the job by doing the backfill, leaving our pipes exposed and ground water seeping up. He strongly recommended we contact the original plumbers and have them come back and finish the $15,000 job they started (this is a work in progress). He was actually stunned that a large company would have left their job like this. I asked about having Rosenthal come back if the other company wouldn't make good on their work and he strongly encouraged me to contact a general handyman who could do the work for much less than a licensed plumber. Rosenthal did not charge for the estimate and sent me the pictures from the crawl space so I could send them to the other plumber. If I ever have plumbing issues again they will be the first company I contact for sure. I would write a review about the other company we used but I need them to come out and complete their job so for now they will remain anonymous (but they know who they are!) read more

I wanted a hot water faucet swapped out, a leaking faucet fixed, a hose bib swapped out and three slow sink drains fixed. They arrived promptly and proceeded to survey my entire house for expensive retrofits (taking photos of everything). They left without fixing anything and sent me 3 quotes $2200 to do the stuff I wanted using hydro jet to clear sinks and a 'peace of mind' bid over over $5000! I got the work I wanted done by an independent plumber for under $500. I suppose some folks fall for their slime ball tactics. Steer clear. read more

My next door neighbor told me that there was a leak in the hose connection on the side of my house. I called Rosenthal for immediate help, and in ten minutes their van arrived. Michael, the technician, explained the problem to me, and attended to the situation by obtaining the necessary item to fix it. He had to leave in order to get the item, and within an hour and 1/2, it was done. The cost to accomplish all of that was very reasonable. read more

I needed the sprayer hose replaced in my kitchen sink. I had the part in hand. You have to unscrew the old hose, screw on the new hose; but access there is cramped and I am 76, so I called a plumber. Rosenthal plumbers came out, took photos, said they would have to remove the faucet to change the hose, and after twenty minutes in the truck with their iPad, working on the estimate, said it would cost $327. I said that was too much and sent them away. Next day Tino's plumbers came out, and replaced the hose within five minutes of arrival, without removing the faucet, and charged me their minimum one-hour labor charge of $145, less than half of Rosenthal's estimate. Note, this one-star review is only about the ridiculous price. They never did any actual work for me. read more

If you're considering Rosenthal Plumbing, you should read this. I only take the time to Yelp for excellent experiences, but today, I'm making an exception. I am LIVID at how Rosenthal Plumbing attempted to take advantage of my mother and grandmother today. Dishwasher install is pretty straightforward. Water hookup, drain hose and power. To make it simpler, we were replacing like for like with the exact same model. I've done it myself in the past and it took me an hour tops. When we installed the current DW at mom's house, it cost $125 (3 years ago). There is nothing special or unique about this particular job site or dishwasher. I found a $50 coupon online for local plumber Rosenthal and scheduled an estimate at my mom's house. After a cursory look at the kitchen, the tech quoted $1,000! When mom questioned the exorbitant price, he pulled out an ipad with pictures of common plumbing jobs (like an "American" menu when you travel internationally) and then condescendingly added that if the drain hose needed to be replaced it would be an ADDITIONAL $500! My mother was flummoxed and put the tech on the phone with me. To level set- Best Buy's install price is $135 and includes delivery and haul away. The go-to plumber for my properties has been George H. Wilson- and they're fantastic. $134 per hour. When I asked the Rosenthal tech how long he thought it would take, he hemmed and hawed before admitting about an hour. I asked how he could justify an $1000 install price, he said that it was a fixed price. Yet when I scheduled the quote, the scheduler said that they couldn't provide any estimates without seeing the job site first as every job was unique. What a racket. Rosenthal Plumbing, you should be ashamed. This is pure and simply trying to take advantage of the less informed and elderly. You will NEVER be welcome in another property of mine. The work included a new faucet in the bathroom, a new toilet, a new garbage disposal, some work on my water heater and re-caulking my shower.
