As far as I'm concerned two of the first things you should do when you move to a new area is find a good mechanic and a good breakfast spot (for some people it's a dry cleaner or dog sitter, for me is a breakfast spot), well, I have lived in and around Oakland Park for many years but for some reason never had occasion to stop in to Routhe's until last week. I have been back in the SoFLo area for ten years but in all that time I just haven't had any serious issues with my little Mazda, just the regular oil changes and usual smaller things. I always just got my tires and batteries at Sears town when I lived in Victoria Park (I'm old fashioned that way) but now that I live in Oakland Park and I had an inkling it could be something serious I needed my own mechanic to give to me straight except I didn't have one and there are a couple dozen assorted radiator, transmission, window tint, tire and lawn mower shops in the neighborhood. Then, I remembered Rothe's from way way back in the day when I rode the bus and had to walk the rest of the way to where I worked down Dixie Hwy... While the overall news for my car was not good I was sort of amazed they fixed the windows issue without charging me for it or even saying anything about it - I dunno, it's the small things that get me, because it's totally something my Dad (who was a tried and true mechanic in his day) would have done. My dad has been gone for so many many years (I know I must sound like I'm an old fart by now) but I can't tell you what it is to have real trustworthy "car guys" you can turn to when your ride is failing you. They explained in detail what was happening inside my transmission, how it might progress if I didn't address it, gave me a price and an assessment of the problem in relation to the age of the car and other issues that have been building up - they didn't tell me what to do, they didn't act like I was too dumb to understand it because I'm a woman, they didn't tell me how to feel about or pressure and judge me into taking one action or another, they just gave it to me straight and waited for me to make the call. No attitude, nothing to prove and I'm the boss of my own car - real simple and direct while knowing what they are talking about - that's what I like about them. Although I have not gotten to know them all really well all the guys I encountered there seem like down to earth people I could talk to about most any car problem and Dennis in particular is great - he they checked out my new car throughly so I feel confident in my road worthiness again. Today was the 2nd time I caught them being dishonest. A few months ago, they told me I needed a new alternator. I decided to have it done somewhere else less expensive and the new shop told me my alternator was fine and it was a power steering pump. Had I not brought it to someone else, they would have hooked me for an alternator and then I still would need the p.s. pump. How do you misdiagnose that? I had them replace my starter 15 months ago and it went bad this weekend. I brought it to a different shop and asked what my options were as far as price. Honda part: $370 or after market $225. Rothe's charged me $398 for what I was told was a Honda part and when the new mechanic pulled it out 15 months later, it was a $200 after market part. They not only charged me $30 more than Honda charges, they didn't even give me the Honda part, they gave me a cheap part. I would never recommend this shop. read more
