After a lot of waffling [curry waffles, anyone?], I ultimately decided on just three stars. Having some of the leftovers tonight confirmed my primary concern, which is as follows: The Chicken Cholay is nearly impossible to eat. There's nothing wrong with whole bone-in chicken. And there's nothing wrong with lots of tasty sauce on that chicken, which the Chicken Cholay certainly has. Unfortunately, what we were served was a brown curry sauce with a veritable minefield of bone fragments and gristle. It was like oatmeal with a handful of nails thrown in it. Had the bone-in chicken stayed intact or boneless chicken been used, it would have been excellent. But when every bite of a dish comes with the constant fear of a dental emergency, it can only be rendered a culinary failure... in any culture. Everything else was very good, for the record. A spicy yellow lentil dish, Naan served whole (and not cut into wedges like a damn Philistine), crispy vegetable samosas, a complementary vegetable salad to start the meal... There's no ambiance here, but it's a crappy strip mall in Meriden... we knew what we were getting into. Still, they definitely know how to make tasty meals here, and in very large portions. But sometimes one glaring error can bring the house of cards crashing down. I will come back to Roti Boti... after all, it's four minutes drive from my house. But my next visit will require a little more scrutiny over the ingredients. read more

This place is very good, and I am surprised at some of the negative reviews. As a Pakistani, I was very pleased by the authentic taste. The food tasted almost home-cooked. The beef behari kebab and the (goat) karahi gosht are as authentic and tasty as any I have ever eaten. I highly recommend those. Ultimately, this is a PAKISTANI restaurant, so if you went in looking for tasteless North American-ized Indian food complete with the annoying (and I suspect manufactured) spicy-smelling ambiance, you'll be disappointed. Great choice of venue for sampling some meat-heavy Pakistani cuisine though. The service at such places can at best be average, so you can just factor that into the tip. Decor I tend not to notice, as I care more about the food at such joints. And who takes a date to a mid-range South Asian restaurant? read more

OK i really was thinking I would never return to Roti Boti, but today my stomach led me back to Gandhi Plaza and I will say, it had definitely improved in some aspects .. first off - menus: they had menus! ok well sort of - they had take out menus only, no nice menus for in-house ordering.. weird. white fabric tablecloths and you order from a color copy take out menu! secondly - the food: they had a lot of vegetarian things on the menus! wooo hoo - ok its the run of the mill stuff you see everywhere else, but its good to have a few choices. i realized now that the rice is sold separate ($5 for green pea palao) from the main courses here, something you don't usually see in many indian restaurants. the breads were still OK, not too awesome. the food i can say was OK too but really on the OILY side and a lot of cardamom. not really BAD but not really to my liking. Palak Paneer ($6) was interesting - the cheese wasn't cubes like usual, and the spinach was darker (and i think the fenugreek and ginger was stronger) than most other places - and not creamy at all. all the meat is Halal here - if that's what you are looking for. (and there is a halal meat store next door) Roti and Naan are only $1 each here .. a good deal! The back of the menu lists their Astoria NY location too - so now I have another restaurant to try when i'm down there! note - i had made this 3 stars and after thinking about it, it really is just 2 star-worthy.. i compared it to other indian restaurants i had given 3 stars to and this place just isnt up to par with them .. read more

I love roti boti. Their samosa chana chat is my favorite. It satisfies all of my comfort food desires. Their naan is so delicious. I love that they are open until 11. A favorite spot that I am happy to return to many times. read more

If you want Indian food on the Berlin Turnpike, you have no option other than Roti Boti and Tabaq Masala. That said, head down the turnpike and into Wethersfield or Middletown if you want Indian food. You will most likely be disappointed if you go here (or Tabaq Masala). One positive: you'll get a large, fresh side salad with your entree free of charge. Otherwise, you'll also be getting really, really greasy food. Vegetarian Indian dishes shouldn't taste this unhealthy. And no vegetarian (or anyone else, for that matter) should have to witness, mid-dinner, a dead mammal (a lamb?) carted off a truck, through the front door and the dining area, into the back kitchen. This really happened! The atmosphere is already kinda dingy and uninviting, but that kind of thing is downright repelling. Finally, the service tend to be negligent to the point of being physically and mentally checked out, such as watching TV or texting, rather than checking in on customers. Normally when you walk into Indian restaurants, you are hit by a beautiful spicy aroma. Not so when you walk into Roti Boti. That was a little confusing. The decor lacked in many aspects and made you feel like you were in an eat and go type of establishment. Definitely not a date place especially since you can hear everyone's conversation. Besides that I was also very confused with the fact that the rice was NOT included with the meal. You MUST order that separately. That's really strange. I've never thought that rice was worth 3-5 dollars before! That's ridiculous. That said, I was going to give only 2 stars to the place, but the Palak Paneer (Saag Paneer) was yummy. Got delivery from here on more than one occasion. Have to say for the price I am paying it is not worth it. Plus sides are that the naan is good and a good sized, and the restaurant opens at 11 which helps with my 1130 lunch time from work. Down side is that now twice I have gotten two different chicken dishes and both have had such little chicken in it with an extremely watery sauce. Also when getting takeout from one of the various apps, you have to choose a rice option and the only option you have is a pea rice that adds an extra $2.99 onto the already over priced dish. read more

We visited the resturant couple of months ago, waited there for 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge us but apparently staff was busy taking phone orders and completely ignored his customers who are sitting on their dinning area including the owner who seems to be busy on his laptop doing something really important while his customers are waiting for someone to acknowledge. There were total of 10 people including us sitting in their dinning area, a family of 4 who has their half A food delivered but missing other items, gentleman kept going to the front desk and complained about their missing food not being delivered .... his missing food never showed up for good 20 minutes beside that 4 of us and two other girls were waited but got nobody to help us. First thing's first: This is NOT an indian place. It's a Pakistani one. Major difference between the two cuisines is the liberal use of beef and meat in almost EVERY Pakistani dish. Moving along, this is a great place to order curry. I would STRONGLY recommend you order the Beef Nihari. It's a very slow cooked, rich curry, that's ONLY eaten with the Naan. If Nihari isn't available (as it is VERY hard and long to cook), order any of the kabobs or kabob rolls. Cannot go wrong. They need to work on their presentation. Bathroom was super clean. read more

I've been to Roti Boti on several occasions, most recently with several friends and have to say that the food has been amazing each time. The first time we ate there we were extremely unimpressed by the decor and general feel of the place - almost to the point of us not staying to eat. Luckily enough, we pressed through the the plastic plates, picnic silverware, and unclothed tables and had an amazing culinary treat. This last time (tonight actually) we saw that they had improved the "feel" of the place - glass plates, proper silverware, and very nice table linens. The important thing here is that the food is phenomenal! It isn't typical "Indian" fare by any means - but it is delicious. We've eaten at quite a few Indian/Pakistani places in and around the New Haven area and this is our favorite! Don't be put off by the looks of the place. Today we went there for the first time. We had been fasting for Ramadan. We were going to break the fast. We walked in the restaurant. We didn't even get a friendly smile. We sat ourselves. We waited for thirty minutes. No one was even taking our orders or bringing any water to our table. I went to see the so called "manager." He says "One minute" and goes away. 10 minutes later, we decide to call him and place our order , because we noticed he was picking up the phone. He picks up the receiver and says his famous words, "one minute" and puts us on hold for a long time until we hung up. Despite his unprofessional attitude we waited for a hour. We finally left. We got a bad taste of Roti Boti without even trying their food. (I would give this restaurant zero stars but there's no option.) read more

We hired Roti Boti to cater our mehndi and we're so glad we did! The food was absolutely fantastic - everyone was raving about how delicious it was! The mango lassis alone converted a number of guests to desi food. And the desi side of the family gave it their back-for-seconds seal of approval! Added to that, everything was very reasonably priced and the pricing system was very clear and straightforward. It was a pleasure to work with Khalid to plan our menu and make sure we had everything we needed for the meal service at the venue (Roti Boti sent two chefs to prep food in the on-site kitchen). It was our first time booking a caterer for our venue, so there were definitely some gaps in our knowledge, but he patiently helped us through them and all turned out well. I absolutely love Indian food but when my family and I went there it was unfortunate that my kids had already gone to the buffet because I would have waked out! I ordered takeout and the chicken was literally all bones, i nearly choked... the pakora was tough like they used roots instead of veg, the samosas were frozen in the center, they didnt bring the rice i paid for, and tje naan wasnt even pre cut, just a gigantic circle of doughy half cooled bread. I was at Roti Boti again after long time. It was good to see that they have done some improvement to the decor and seating. Went to hangout with a bunch of friends for dinner buffet. They have a Ramazan buffet this time of the year. I have always liked the food here and this time as well the it struck the right taste buds. I've eaten in dozens of Indian and Pakistani restaurants in both of those countries and in the US, and Roti Boti has the best food of any in this country. As one deshi couple who were dining next to me said, "It's like homemade." I was brought to the restaurant by a friend who also has extensive experience in Indian restaurants and who was raving about Roti Boti. I immediately joined in his enthusiasm and have recruited many other friends who all share my assessment. The naan is as close as it gets to coming from a Lahori tandoor. Outstanding. The haleem has won the hearts, palates, and stomachs of everyone with whom I've dined there. I have yet to hear of any dish not be entirely satisfactory. If you're looking for a posh place with fancy menus and exquisite decor, this isn't your place. Although I have been to this restaurant many times and enjoyed there food, today I had a very bad experience. I called to make an order and the line was going busy so i called multiple times and when they finally picked up the man who I talked to was extremely rude. I didnt even get a chance to tell him the lines were busy because as soon as he picked up he started complaining about me not having enough patience and that i should know he has other customers on the phone as well. Me and some folks from my office decided to get takeout there today for lunch. For 4 people (4 chicken meals, 2 orders of rice - it doesn't come with it, and 2 order of naan) it was 55 dollars. The meals were relatively small for the money. We couldn't figure which lunch belonged to whom as they were not labeled, or identifiable from the descriptions. I went to this hotel 3 days back with friends n was impressed by the food quality but dismayed over their service standard. I LOVE the chicken tikka masala at this place. It is without a doubt the best I've had anywhere. Good fresh nan. I prefer this place for the lunch buffet. Unfortunately this place can sometimes be COLD inside. The walls are NOT DECORATED either. They DON'T SERVE BEER and that is a disappointment for dinner -- I really wanted a Kingfisher when I ate there for dinner one night. The food however is great -- I mainly eat the chicken tikka masala, rice, and nand but some of the other stuff is quite tasty as well. The lunch buffet has a LIMITED SELECTION. Good food -- extremely unkind service. I will not be going back again. The first time I went, I thought the food was great, but the service was horrendous: rude, condescending, unhelpful. I also found the atmosphere to be very blah. My husband didn't mind, but I was opposed to going back...I was talked into ordering take-out to avoid the aspects of the restaurant I didn't like.
