Our favorite place for classic glazed donuts - they're so fluffy and delicious and not too sweet, so perfect for our palates. If you watch Food Network or the Travel Channel on a regular basis, or even watch Texas based food and travel shows, you have probably seen Round Rock Donuts pop up. On a recent trip to the Austin area, I made it a point to stop here and pick up some goodies and share with some family in town. Round Rock is a small town and it seemed like half the town was here that Sunday morning. The drive thru line was down the street and their was a good sized crowd outside. I decided to find a parking spot and walk up so I could see their offerings even though I mostly knew what I was getting. The building itself is pretty large, but there is no inside seating. Their goods are displayed at a window out front with two lines off to each side. They had quite a few friendly staff working and they had the walk up and drive thru lines moving at a decent pace. I did have what I would consider a slight wait for my order. Round Rock donuts are unlike any other donut I've seen. They're shaped like a regular donut, but what sets them apart is their orange like dough They are not orange flavored but apparently the eggs they use give it this unique color. Each donut is also hand rolled as opposed to some machine popping them out. I went with the OG original glazed donut as well as chocolate iced. I also got a large kolache because you can't go to the Hill Country and not have one. I ate the kolache first which was very good. They used quality sausage inside and the dough was tasty as well. When I got to my fam's house, we dug into the donuts. They were indeed a bright orange and glazed to perfection. These donuts are larger than most. Even with the 30 minute drive to my cousin's house, they stayed warm and were almost melt in your mouth soft. The chocolate glaze was also very good. If you want to try something else, they also have a good variety of other donuts flavors and types. I washed it all down with a delicious caramel mocha cold brew. It packed a little punch and had me nice and awake for my drive back to Houston. I can see why this place is so popular.
