We used to be a country. A proper country. Now there's a "Wonder" on every corner and my local diner in Somerset - a staple of my last 35 of 45 years - is a complete dump. So when I used to work in L'ville and could get Route 1 Diner delivered through Uber Eats it was a treat indeed. I often ordered the turkey Reuben, omelettes, BLTs, fish sandos, and quesadillas. All good but the actual standout here is the STEAK FRIES! They are fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside. They're the best steak fries by far and possibly a top 3 restaurant fry of all time for me. Even by delivery they arrive crisp. I've since left that job near the diner but when I find myself in the area I can't help but stop in to get the fries. I was actually hesitant to do so at first - kinda like lifting the curtain back on Oz. But there's no trickery here - the waitstaff is friendly in person, the food is hot and fresh, and incredibly priced. This diner is such a gem and I am admittedly jealous of people who live nearby. On the plus side: pleasant interior, friendly service, clean restrooms, decent if unremarkable food. However, it was really slow. I just ordered a short stack and side of bacon and somehow they took over 30 minutes despite things being quiet. (It was at around 10pm.) I lovea jersey diner. 24/7 and a nice free lot. Per diner etiquette, beautiful cakes and pies are at the entrance. Service was quick and our waitress was lovely and attentive. My friend thought the buffalo wings were great, they are not breaded. The gyro wrap was huge and more like a panini to me. It came with fries and slaw for $15.98 . The tzatziki sauce is homemade and you should ask for an extra on the side to dip. read more

Went to this Diner after a evening of shopping. What a mistake. Should have waited to eat. The diner was very decorative inside. Very pretty esthetically. The waitress was very nice and attentive. I had a dinner meal which includes a soup. Sad to say that the soup was the best part of the meal. I ordered the Baked Meatloaf. What a disaster!!! SEE THE PHOTO! The root one Diner has a warm and friendly environment. The staff was all very kind and the service was very quick. I have to say that everyone at my table loved what they got and have lots left over as the portion sizes were very large. I personally got a Cobb salad with grilled chicken. It's truly amazing that so many food items can be offered, delivered quickly and taste great. We stopped there with a very "hangry" granddaughter just leaving a graduation. We were seated at a booth. What? No jukebox? Dianna was our server and did a great job making sure our food came out quickly and accurately. My granddaughter ordered a chocolate milk shake and grilled cheese sandwich. We took back half the sandwich and all the steak fries which came with it. I ordered the Duo Deli sandwich which consisted of pastrami, corned beef and swiss cheese with cole slaw on the side as well as steak fries. They supposedly give the option for hot or cold, but mine came out hot without being asked. My wife ordered the quesadilla without anything added. Loaded with peppers, onions and cheese, she could only eat half as well and took the rest home for dinner. Come for lunch and make sure to grab the soup! Came here for a lunch with a larger group and we had great service and a stellar lunch through and through! The business lunch is quite the deal but I opted for a tuna salad club sandwich - wanted that bacon. I'm really glad that lunch came with soup because I was going to order one anyways! The chicken noodle soup hit the spot and was very tasty. The beef and vegetable also looked good and got rave reviews. Our server was so nice, even asked a companion who initially said no soup after he brought everyone soup definitely convinced another serving. My club had delicious tuna salad, lots of bacon, and the wheat bread was toasted nicely. The pickle and coleslaw also went a long way, especially with those nicely fried sweet potato fries! This place belongs in a sitcom or something because it is so Jersey and has that local flair oozing from each booth. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with such a friendly host that it felt like we knew him from another life or something. The menu was pretty much typical diner food, and we were there for breakfast so hubby and my toddler stuck to pancakes and bacon. I decided to try out the Route 1 Skillet and it was AMAZING. At first the size threw me off a bit because it seemed rather small for $13 but it was really filling. The only star that's coming off is for the coffee (it was a bit on the watery side), and the muffins were a bit pricey at $6 a pop (don't let your 4 year old order). Very tasty breakfast for a great value. We had the pork roll breakfast sandwich and a breakfast burrito. Both were nicely prepared and came with home fries. The home fries were properly cooked and tasty unlike some other local diners I've been to in the area. I recommend the pork roll sandwich. Ample serving size and very flavorful...cooked to perfection. The place looks small but it's actually quite ample. And the service was outstanding. Everyone was cheery. Our waitress (receipt said Erin), was wonderful. She was on top of her service as she came by many times but did not over do it. Very professional. The waitress staff also happen to take care of their physical presentation, which is nice. "Erin" made our day. She was beautiful inside and out. I would have given 5 stars. Tried this diner with friends on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't too crowded around 1pm, and I was able to snag a booth for 3. We were able to get our orders: I got the manager special (pancakes stack with eggs and bacon) (9.99), one friend got 1 of everything (1 pancake, 1 french toast, eggs, bacon - forgot the name) (9.99) and another friend got the ziti with meatballs. Our meal came out to about $31 dollars + tax and tip. Food came quick and service was awesome. The server we had was great and the manager greets everyone that comes in and stops by. Food is good, and cheap for the amount you get, which are hallmarks of a good diner. My friend literally struggled to finish the ziti - you couldn't even see the bottom of the plate. We were assisted and supported by the waiters, Daniel and Erin, who made us feel very at home. When Daniel was not free, Erin backed Daniel up, by offering the service to our table, and when Erin was not free, Daniel came back and offered the same service. I ate here with a friend and found the food to be pretty okay. The prices are fair and the service was quick and efficient. If anything, breakfast is clearly the go-to here. My friend got a cheesesteak and while he said it was good, to me it looked like mostly lettuce and tomato with little meat and cheese. He said his onion rings were delicious though. I got the breakfast burrito and while it was good, still tasted rather dry. I knew I should have gotten the French toast! Either way, I would recommend this diner for something easy. I am from the West. LA-LA Land. LA. I found myself in Trenton for a special occasion. I was with some pals from Massachusetts. The out-of-towners were hungry one morning and needed breakfast ASAP. Route 1 Diner was bustling with locals that morning. The staff were quite friendly. It was a busy house but they got us seated with a minimal wait. It was nice seeing the rapport with the regulars and the staff. A table switch was needed and the guests were asked politely and complied politely. Nice to see. I love a good diner spot. Out in the West, Norm's was my favorite 24/7 diner. I could go at 2 or 3 AM for Steak & Eggs with hash browns and pancakes. So the menu was right up my alley. It was difficult to decide. The waitress was nice and patient with us as we were chatting and not deciding right away. Decisions decisions. I went with the Italian Skillet. The food came quickly. It was hot and delicious. The waitress was attentive. Refilled our drinks and asked numerous times if we needed anything. I used to love this diner. Good food great service. Not anymore I went three times figuring maybe an off day but no. The manager really doesnt care. The servers stand arpund and talk with each other. BUT worst of all the food quality is terrible. I got a turkey the bread was stale the turkey was slimey and the bacon looked like it was the ends that are sold in the reduced section of the supermarket, I really miss the old management. read more
