I have been here many times and never really had a bad experience, but I was charged wrong multiple times. I came here one day with some co-workers, and we all paid by credit card, and one paid cash. The waitress kept the cash and then overcharged me by $40. When I called said, they were going to look into it and get back to me. They never did get back to me. Then I went there again, and me and my friend both split the bill and paid by credit card. They ended charging me for the entire bill. I had the receipt to prove it. I called and asked to speak with the manager and was told he was not in. They said he would call me back. Never did I get a callback. The manager of this restaurant is a problem. My wife is vaccinated, I've gotten one shot. We sat at a table and just had unmasked people standing behind us (like two feet) talking to the table behind us for about 30 minutes. There were four of them. After we finished our meal, I approached the manager on our way out. I said there were all of these people talking to the table behind to us for a long time and they weren't wearing masks. He said the tables are six feet apart and that's the CDC guidelines. I'm pretty sure the CDC wants people to be six feet apart (unmasked), not the tables. I asked about the people talking loudly without masks for going on a half hour. The manager said they eventually noticed that and as soon as they saw it they moved those people to the bar. Awesome! Thank goodness you noticed it! It was two booths in front of the hostess station. What took a half hour? What is the manager doing? Or is it they're regulars and they can't possibly have COVID? This has been the single worst restaurant for service. I imagine the food tastes good...when it's hot. Or if you even get it at all. Ordered twice from here. First order it was well over an hour to get the delivery and they forgot a meal. The Grubhub driver texted me saying they were there but waiting. Got our refund from Grubhub. Went back on the recommendation of a friend who said that must've been a one off and we should try it again. Literally the same thing happened. Text from driver. Over an hour wait. Forgotten meal. This time we called the restaurant and spoke to the manager Jeff. Or should I say, got yelled at and swore at by the manager. Then we find out he's an owner (hire a manager, Jeff). When he picked up the phone "ya" was his greeting. My wife asked for his name and after a good 10-15 seconds he replied. Then we try explaining what happened and, while on speaker phone mind you, his reply was "listen, you don't have to talk to me like I'm a piece of shit!". Now i know my wife wasn't a ray of sunshine on the phone, but it was her meal they forgot. Both times! Understandably irritated and maybe a bit Karenish when she asked to speak to the manager, but he had no right to talk to her, or anyone for that matter, the way he spoke to her. Really wonder if he would have spoken to her that way if we were in the restaurant. I'm guessing no. Will not be going back for a third time. Besides, it' s really rather expensive. The kids meals are like $7.50-$9. The kids pasta is literally a cup of ziti with either sauce or butter. No meatball, no sausage, no chicken. Just pasta for $7.50. We have tried this restaurant in the past and thought it ok. We haven't been in awhile and we tried it Friday night. I got scallops and mixed veggies. I didn't want the rice or asparagus. My husband ordered the steak tips and fries The salads are ok, not great tasting but ok. My husband's steak tip were more like pieces of shaved steak very thin and not Med rare like he asked for . I believe he got 1 piece that he would call a tip. They were smothered in BBQ Sauce which he didn't recall the menu saying this. My scallops were so well done and the veggies so overdone and tasteless. We ran into friends and I mentioned that our dinner wasn't very good and they said there's weren't very good either, I believe they got grill you pick 2 . They had stated this was the 2nd time they were disappointed but wanted to give it another try, with So many restaurants we feel we deserve a good meal all the time, especially when it costs close to 75.00 to 100.00 these days. read more

My wife and I went out for steak on Valentines day. We decided to give this place a try after a few friends suggested it. The space was well lit and even though it was crowded it wasn't noisy. My steak tips were okay but the steak fries weren't the best. My wife's filet was tasty but her mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. I was torn between a 3 and a 4 for this, I feel it was a 3.5-3.8. We went on a Tuesday early evening when it was quite slow and so I think the service was a bit better. The food was solid. The calamari was quite good, not over-cooked at all, but for the price I would expect a bit more. The steak tips were likewise good, though not amazing. I would probably try a burger next time instead. The sweet potato fries were really good though. The kitchen made a small mistake (forgot to send out our salad until we asked after the entree arrived) but the waitress was very good about it and it wasn't a big deal. Sat at the bar last night. The bar setting is great and acquaint. Plenty of good size TVs at almost every angle. The host is fine. The two female bartenders talking on and on to each other and not attentive whatsoever. We only got apps. They didn't even ask us if everything was okay or if we needed anything else because they were too busy chatting to one another. I had to raise my hand (no I'm not in a classroom) to get their attention. The app cheesesteaks rolls were actually good however the sauce that comes with it has to go! It's awful! It does NOT belong w/this appetizer. Ask for cheese dip instead. Fries were not freshly cooked. Would I go back again? I definitely would and give a second chance (sitting at the bar) and if bartenders were attentive but not too attentive. The restaurant is known for their killer steaks. I had heard this new restaurant was great. Well, maybe they were having an off night but it was awful. I ordered a cocktail which I swear was pure turpentine with mint leaves in it and literally tasted "dirty" and my friend ordered a martini that was about 3/4 full when the server delivered it. I've never seen that before. I'm curious to know that happened to the rest of the drink! It's a steakhouse but I ordered salmon which was dreadfully overcooked and the rice was very dry. My friend did order the steak and didn't like it. So too bad for me for ordering salmon but they call it a steakhouse so I don't get that one! Definitely will not return. read more

I don't know where to start. During these crazy times we needed a place to have a Bereavement Meal. Once we heard the Governor say we were entering Part 2 of Phase 2 and restaurants could allow inside dining, we started looking at larger places on Route 1. From the beginning, Jeff Floramo, the owner, was so kind and understanding to our need. None of us had ever eaten here before and were hesitant but we needed a place and the menu had a great variety and priced reasonably. They put us social distant in our own area. We had 2 wonderful servers who wore masks the whole time while they served us our salads, rolls & butter, soda, everything. Jeff and his staff were attentive the whole time. The meal consisted of Chicken Ziti Broccoli, Baked Haddock, BBQ Mix of Steak Tips/Ribs/BBQ Chicken, Rice and Mixed Vegetables. For desert we got mini pastries and not Italian Cookies that some on the other venues offered us. I honestly have to say, I was suprised at how delicious everything was. Everyone commented on how good the food was, especially the Steak Tips. They were so tender and the marinade was so tasty. The Pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the oil/garlic sauce was juicy. Being italian ourselves, that was something we couldn't help but notice. The service was exceptional. Those 2 ladies took such good care of us. We were a total of about 45 people and they never stopped. Jeff was constantly checking on us and seeing what he could do for us. It was amazing at the attention we received and under the circumstances, it was exactly what we needed. After losing our mother and the thoughts of us not being able to have a meal to celebrate her, finding this place was a prayer answered. I'm not local to Saugus but I know I'll be back to Route 1 Grill House. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu and get more of those delicious tips. read more

This place is a hidden gem! If you have not been here...GO!!! The Lobster Roll was AMAZING! The Fries that came with it were one of the best I have ever had!!! The Coleslaw was just ok (I am not a fan of Coleslaw). Went with 5 friends and everyone could not believe how great the food was, 3 ordered Steak Tips and 2 had leftovers! 2 had Pasta dishes and could not believe how perfect everything was. We'll come back here again. Thought the food was very good. I did the trio of sausage, steak tips and turkey tips with sweet potato fries and a Caesar salad. Delicious! A ton of food... definitely had leftovers. My boyfriend did the build-a-burger. It was huge. He also liked his. I will say, having worked in restaurants before - the hostesses were clearly busy, but I believe someone should always be at the front and a customer should always be greeted with a smile and hello. We stood there for about 5 minutes and then got one of their attentions and they just said, "how many?" Also, we wanted a beer from the bar because it was going to take about 20 minutes and a family waiting (with two small children) took the seats at the bar waiting for their table. Went last night. Was not overly impressed. Staff was very nice. Seemed clean. Food was ok. Very small portions for the prices. Had baked haddock and it was a tiny sliver of fish. Garden salad had some rotten lettuce in it. Two people in our party ordered steak tips. One came very well done one came damn near raw and they had both asked for medium. Server was nice enough to bring out replacment tips and they were cooked wrong as well. Didn't bother saying anything. If it wasn't for the server I would have given a two star. The hubby and I went here last Friday night as a last minute decision. We had no problem parking and we were seated right away. The service was excellent and friendly. We had the Philly cheese-steak spring rolls for an app and they were tasty! You can tell that they were made in house as well as opposed to some pre-made frozen option you might get at another restaurant. For the meal, I got a burger and it was perfect. Went tonight for my daughters 16th birthday with a few of her friends. We ordered apps philly cheese steak and buffalo chicken fingers, they were good. Ordered dinner my daughter wanted Filet Mignon for her birthday. The food came out and my daughters Filet was grey looking and she tasted it and it was dried out and had no flavor. I tried it and it was terrible, call waitress over and told her. She put in another entree in for us and told us we had to pay for the Filet. The manager came over and said that we ordered the food and had to pay for it even though it was uneatable. I would not recommend this restaurant and the Manager does not know customer service!!! The Positive: Ambiance - music and cleanliness were excellent. My pistachio martini was also very good. My friend enjoyed the warm dinner rolls and her baked potato. The Negative: Everything else! --We came for Sunday lunch and the place was empty. Two other parties were inside and one party was sitting outside in the tent. We ordered from the dinner menu. Later we were told we could have ordered from the weekday luncheon menu. Why didn't they tell us that from the beginning? --FALSE ADVERTISING on cocktail menu. My friend ordered a house margarita assuming it was hand made. House tequila was $11.00, premium would have been $13.00. She went with the house. It arrived in a plastic soda glass. She took a sip and it was sugary sweet - tasted nothing like a margarita. Menu indicates agave syrup is used. She spoke to bartender to ask how it was made, only to learn that it was a pre-made sour mix from a bottle. No agave whatsoever. The bartender agreed that the drink would be removed from the bill. Bill arrives and the margarita is on there - for $13.00!!! Outrageous. --Surf and Turf was terrible. Steak tips tasted like they had been marinating for weeks. Very thin and clearly not fresh. Shrimp was overcooked and seafood/breadcrumb stuffing was the worst we have ever had. --Odd that the side salads were served in plastic disposable dishes where everything else was served on glass plates. Salads were some iceberg lettuce, a slice of cucumber and a couple of cherry tomatoes cut in half to appear as though there were more. --Scallops were unimpressive - also overcooked. --There is no dessert menu. We figured we would try a sweet treat after a mediocre meal. Server orally recited dessert list and we opted for a slice of strawberry cheesecake. We were expecting fresh strawberries. Was bland, the strawberry syrup came from a bottle, and the whipped cream clearly came from a tub of Cool Whip. And for $9.95!! I have had delicious, FRESH cheesecake in BOSTON for less than that!! This establishment is clearly quite desperate to stay afloat. For a restaurant that has been around for the magic three years, we don't expect it to last must longer. We will not be returning to the Route 1 Grill House and will be sharing our experience with our family, friends, and neighbors. read more

Came here with a dinner companion on a cold Saturday night, and the place was packed, with a large number of people waiting to be seated. Seems like a good sign, I thought. Shortly after that, things started to go awry. First, there was a miscommunication between the hostess and the employee who was seating people, which resulted in another party of two, who arrived after us, getting the table that was supposed to be ours (for the record, this was not the hostess' fault; we heard her tell the seater that we were next, but he seated the other party instead). A few minutes later, we got the next available table, a high-top. Not what we would've preferred, but acceptable. This in itself wouldn't have thrown off the evening. I ordered a 'build-your-own-burger' with bacon and a fried egg, specifically requesting that the egg be cooked 'over hard', so that the yolk didn't run (a big turnoff for me). My companion ordered fish-- I think it was the haddock. When the food came to the table, I instantly noticed two things-- yolk running down the side of my burger onto the plate, and a host of toppings on the burger that I did not order-- lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. I picked them off and decided I'd eat the burger, even with the runny yolk. But I was curious-- if this was listed as a 'build-your-own-burger', on which each topping was an additional $0.75, was my burger going to be $3 over what I expected because of the 4 extra toppings? We asked our server about this, and she explained that lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles came on the burger automatically. Huh? How does this make sense on a 'build-your-own-burger', when lettuce, tomatoes and onions are listed among the 'Choose your toppings' items on the menu? How would anybody know to expect those items on the burger, when the entire concept of 'build-your-own-burger' is typically (and when I say 'typically', I mean pretty much ALWAYS) to start with a bare burger-- a blank slate-- and then add to it only what you wish? I mean, what would happen if you ordered a build-your-own-burger, with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles? Would you get double of each? Our server seemed unable to relate to my confusion about this. She acted like this was normal, this is how everyone does it, explaining it with a mouth that was smiling, but eyes that shot daggers. In their defense, she did return and inform us that because it was not cooked to my request, the fried egg would be removed from the bill. However, I had to take her word on this, because just after we paid for the meal, we realized that we had never seen an itemized bill. Was the egg in fact taken off? Had we actually not paid an extra $3 on the burger? Hell, was it even OUR bill that we received, and not someone else's in error? We had no way of knowing. Without an itemized bill, there's any number of things that could happen without a customer being aware of it, and that is a big deal. ***Every person considering patronizing the Route 1 Grill House should be aware of this.*** Aside from the negatives, my burger itself was tasty, we also had a chicken tenders appetizer we enjoyed, and my companion was satisfied with her meal. However, she was even more upset about the errors with my meal (and the seating mix-up) than I was-- and whereas I felt that I might be willing to consider giving the Grill House another shot, in case we were just there on an off night, she was not. read more

I've been here a few times and the service is hit or miss. Sometimes it's good other times it's lacking. This is definitely not one of my favorites. The food is usually pretty good but service is a huge factor for me. The last time I went they tried to seat us in the back of the restaurant where literally no one was sitting which was very odd. We asked to be moved and they moved us. I'm not sure what the logic was with the seating as the restaurant wasn't full and there was plenty of seating in the main area where everyone else in the restaurant was sitting. On another occasion I was out with a group of friends and we had a lot of food & drinks. After my first glass of wine the waitress decided not to pour my wine and just brought me the carafe...again very odd. Needless to say I haven't been back. read more

STEAK TIPS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD! My boyfriend and I have come here for dinner twice. We enjoyed our meals both times and plan to come back! I got a spinach salad with steak tips which were cooked to perfection. He got the turkey tips last time and the Fig and Goat Cheese pizza tonight. The service was excellent. Our only complant is that their selection of non-alcoholic beverages is limited to Pepsi products. They were nice enough to make me a "mocktail" with pomegranate and orange juice muddled with fruit, but it would be nice if they have some more beverage choices on their menu. read more

Our waitress, Janet, was friendly & accommodating. Janet didn't know the answer to my ? Re: the spiciness of the House Bloody Mary Mix & she went to the best source to get an answer for me- a Bartender! I was assured my Bloody Mary would be made to accommodate my Yankee palate & indeed, it was. Not too much horseradish. I loved the BM! See photo. My husband ordered Alagash on draft. Warm, crusty rolls were promptly delivered to our table just after being seated & were delightful. We used 1 of our 2 sides that came w/ the entrees we ordered for a salad I enjoyed the blue cheese salad dressing that was served on the side; it was the "real deal". Some less credible restaurants dilute their BC salad dressing to cut costs- never a good thing! I ordered the steak & lamb tip combo, cooked medium w/ a sweet potato for my 2nd side item. My husband went all steak tips, also cooked medium w/ asparagus. All meats were cooked as requested. Steak tips were excellent, very tender, as were my lamb tips. We were very pleased. My sweet potato was fair, steamed, w/ butter served on the side. It's a good healthy option for a side. The asparagus strangely had the inedible stalks still attached but, whatever. It does help w/ presentation! I would definitely dine here again without hesitation. We arrived on a Sat. Approx 5pm &we're seated right away. I checked this spot out for lunch on a Sunday afternoon with my parents and had an overall excellent experience. This is located on Route 1 South where Papa Gayo used to be. There is plenty of parking in the lot and a big sign so you don't miss it. The atmosphere is great! Laid back and chill with a sort of industrial-country vibe. The staff was all super friendly and the place was very clean. My mom and I both had the steak tips....fabulous! Cooked to perfection and super flavorful. My dad had the meatloaf special and said it was a little dry but tasted good. The reason for the four stars and not five is that service was a little off. Our drinks were empty for a bit but they did just open so I like to give time to address these kinks. I'll definitely be back and suggest you should check it out too! My husband and I were really excited about the grill house we thought It was a great a alternative to our usual places and it's right down the street from us. Right from the start our server was very rude and impatient. My husband ordered a blue moon and I got a specialty cocktail and she forgot all about them, I got her attention and reminded her she apologized to us with an unapologetic look on her face and forgot about the drinks again!
