I think the reason I had never tried this cafe before was because I surmised it was a tourist magnet. After all, it occupies a prime corner location on Powell Street just up the hill from Union Square. The cable car even stops in front, so why wouldn't tourists want to have breakfast here before tackling Fisherman's Wharf? Well, let's just say there were plenty of selfie takers in the place. I waited for a huge family to be seated before the server pointed me to a vacant table for two. I didn't waste much time in deciding what I wanted. First, I ordered the $6 Cafe au Lait (Photo 10) because the house coffee just wouldn't do. It was fine, but the $19 Napa Omelet just didn't sit well with me. I made the selection so I have to take some accountability. Some but not all. I was intrigued by the sautéed apples and brie cheese folded into my eggs. The mushrooms and almonds were more of a question mark, but the cilantro I knew I had to pull that off. It all would've worked better as a crepe with a less opinionated cheese. The eggs came with sourdough toast and red potatoes that could've spent more time on the grill (Photo 9). Decent but not my favorite breakfast. FOOD - 3 stars...a hodgepodge omelet that didn't quite work AMBIANCE -3 stars...pretty standard coffee shop like a mini-Denny's SERVICE - 3 stars...seemed mostly harried by needy customers with accents TOTAL - 3 stars...Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light RELATED - Exploring Union Square? friendly staff, burger def needed more seasoning, for better flavor. fries tasted good. steak and eggs came out good. staff forgot to bring order of french toast out as well. indoor seating area is nice and calm.

This is half of the classic French toast and half of the bacon. Classic French Toast Bacon

.... Visited several ago and it was a lot better. We split the classic French toast and bacon. This is half. Poor presentation and blah. $25.00. You be the judge!

Delicious breakfast and the crew and owner do a fantastic job of slinging great food while keeping the energy friendly! I loved my veggie Benedict! Super silky hollandaise sauce and delicious breakfast potatoes! Will eat here again when back in The City!

I absolutely loved this neighborhood gem Café. Yes it's up a hill from Union Square but it is totally worth it! Service is wonderful. The food is outstanding. Highly recommend!

Another fine restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Roxane's, San Francisco. A neighborhood gem. been coming here 12 years.

We always love coming to Roxanne's Cafe for breakfast. It's been over six years since we've been here. We're in San Francisco for two days before we head off to Hawaii, and today decided to walk to Roxanne's for breakfast. Our favorite person still works here. Consuelo has been here for 23 years. She's always there when we come in, she always greets us with a warm welcoming hug hello. Many hugs I might add. Consuelo always gives us great service. After 23 years, Consuelo remembers us and our names. When she's not busy, she brings us water, coffee refills a plenty and our breakfast and her great conversation. She will always ask how my mom is doing. Always a pleasure seeing Consuelo at Roxanne's Cafe. The potatoes today were delicious.

By far the best Corned Beef Hash I've ever had. Very unexpected tasty diner. Since it's in the middle of a very touristic area I didn't think much of it till I tried. I strongly recommend it. Service was very nice. Food was super good and prices were very affordable. I even got mimosas! The place inside is very cute too, and if you sit by the window you can see the trolly up and down which adds some entertainment to your breakfast.

    Roxanne grande

We came on a busy Sunday but there was no wait which was great. Service was poor however, our waitress did not speak good English and initially brought matcha instead of mocha, even regular coffee didn't come until the food (would have been nice to sip while waiting), no refills on water or coffee. Food was overall better than service. The "Roxanne grande" was very good, pancakes were average but eggs potatoes and bacon were excellent. Lava cake was cooked through, no lava.

My self and my partner were visiting from out of town. let's me just start off with the services was absolutely amazing the lady was very friendly and personable it's felt like a local spot. Alright let's talk about the food I ended up getting a turkey sandwich with avocado. Let just say they are not stingy on their quality of meat and produce. Everything was extremely fresh, the bread was perfect not too hard but not too soft! If you are a local or visiting from out of town you have to try this spot. Please keep in mind that is establishment is small and unfortunately doesn't have a wheelchair accessible.

    Classic Caesar Salad with chicken
    Lucy S.

I ordered the Caesar salad with chicken and it fell short of what I expected for $22. The lettuce didn't taste very fresh and the dressing tasted mediocre. I think I could have made a better salad by myself. Service was good

    Corn beef sunrise and potatoes

Two days in a row, it's so good! The first day we ordered oat milk lattes, steak & eggs, eggs Benedict and corn beef sunrise, we ordered the exact same things the next day! It's small but we were seated and served quickly on the week

    Tony T.

The staff were great and friendly. Food was good, not great, and decent prices for the area. One of our water glasses was dirty. Yelp showed it was wheelchair accessible (one of reasons for selecting here to try) and actually it was not. No ramp and had a set of 5 steps. Therefore the lower rating today.

Uncooked pancake. I prefer golden brown
    David C.

Was recommended by our hotel who said they would give us a 10% discount. Waitress said she applied the discount. Brought us the bill with no itemized receipt. Paid the bill and got an itemized email. No discount was received. Ordered pancakes and side of sausage for $23. Could have gotten a combo meal for less with more food. No recommendation from waitress. Very disappointed with service. After getting the pancake home, it was worse than McDonalds. I don't do very many reviews. This place was so bad that I had to do one.

We walked into a space that feels designed for groups, with plenty of seating and a menu built around shareable desserts. The interior has a contemporary, stylish feel with comfortable seating arrangements that accommodate both small groups and larger parties, making it the type of place where you can come after dinner and spend time trying a few different things instead of just ordering one dessert. The energy is lively and social, with groups gathered around large dessert plates and the hum of conversation filling the room. The bingsu is the main attraction here, especially the mango sticky rice bingsu and volcano-style creations. We ordered the mango sticky rice version and found the shaved ice had that soft, fluffy texture that melts quickly, creating a light, refreshing base that absorbs the toppings well. The combination of sweet mango, coconut rice, and the fine ice created a nice balance of fruity sweetness and the familiar coconut flavor, and the toppings were generous enough that each bite felt complete. The volcano-style creations add a dramatic presentation, with toppings cascading over the ice and creating layers of texture and flavor that make the dessert feel more like an experience than just a bowl of ice. The crepe cakes are also worth trying, with lighter layers that make them easier to enjoy without feeling overly heavy, and the matcha and strawberry flavors stood out for their clean, well-balanced profiles. The portions are definitely on the larger side, so this is a better place to share. We found that splitting a few desserts across the table allowed us to try more of the menu without overcommitting, and the variety of options from bingsu to honey toast and lava-style desserts meant there was something for everyone. The honey toast is a fun choice if you want something warm and more indulgent, with a crisp exterior and a soft, buttery interior that pairs well with the ice cream and toppings. Some desserts can feel a little expensive depending on what you order, but the presentation and variety make it more of a dessert outing than a quick snack, and the quality of the ingredients is noticeable across the board. Service can be a little slower when it gets busy, especially later at night when the shop fills up, but the staff are generally friendly and the atmosphere makes it easy to wait. We noticed the team handling the steady flow with efficiency, and the pacing of the meal stayed comfortable even when the restaurant was full. The energy of the room remains social and relaxed, and the staff checked in at the right moments without rushing us through the meal. U:Dessert Story is a solid spot for creative Asian desserts, especially if you are going with friends and want to try a few different flavors together. The combination of shareable portions, thoughtful presentation, and a lively atmosphere makes it a destination for a more social dessert experience, offering a meal that feels both indulgent and communal. The variety across the menu gives you room to explore different styles on repeat visits, and the quality of the desserts keeps the experience feeling intentional and satisfying.

I'm always hunting for spots like this because I have a weakness for those over-the-top, Instagram-worthy desserts that look like diabetes in a dish. Like most places in this genre, A Buttercup is small, modern, and minimalist with limited seating. If you plan to go, aim for off-hours unless you enjoy waiting in line for sugar. The decor is cute and trendy, perfect for photos if that's part of your dessert ritual. As they say, "you eat with your eyes first," and when it comes to presentation, this place definitely gets an A+. The desserts look stunning and set high expectations. Unfortunately, that's where things started to crumble. It's like going to see your favorite artist live. You've watched the videos, memorized the songs, and paid for the experience. But instead of the electric performance you imagined, you get someone lip-syncing and barely connecting with the crowd. That was this place in dessert form. We ordered the Mango Bingsoo on our first visit, and when it arrived, we were surprised by how small the portion was. The guy next to us even looked over and said, "Whatever that is, I'm getting that next time." He shouldn't have. The Bingsoo looked great but was bland, and the "snow" was more chunky ice than soft shave. The Thai Tea Roti was also not what I expected. It came with Thai tea ice cream and sauce alongside a roti that was fried to a crunch. Interesting idea, just not the best execution. The sauce and ice cream needed a stronger Thai tea flavor to balance the crispy roti, and the flavors never quite came together. Overall, A Buttercup nails the aesthetics but misses the flavor. If you're here for the photos, you'll be happy. If you're here for the taste, you'll leave with a full camera roll and an unsatisfied sweet tooth.

Our waitress was very knowledgeable and friendly and took the time to explain to us what she recommended (the mango sticky rice in the picture). I've ordered mango sticky rice at thai restaurants before, this one was the best I've ever had. We originally went to the location near Union Square, thinking we'd be able to grab pastries and hot chocolate, only to realize it's primarily a retail shop with chocolate bars and merchandise. We ended up making our way to the Valencia Street location, and I'm so glad we did. We learned that it used to be the original factory before they outgrew the space. Production has since moved a few blocks away, and now this location offers classes, a café, and plenty of chocolate treats. While we were there, a chocolate-making class was in session, and it was fun to watch part of it. The instructor even came over to chat with us and answer a few questions, which was such a nice personal touch. We ordered the brownie bite flight along with a hot chocolate, and both were fantastic. The brownie flight was rich, flavorful, and a fun way to sample different chocolates. The hot chocolate came with a tiny cookie that was absolutely delicious. At first, we were a little disappointed because we thought our hot chocolate was supposed to come with a marshmallow and didn't see one. When we mentioned it, the instructor smiled and showed us a toppings station we had completely missed. There were homemade marshmallows, flavored sugar cubes, and other little extras you could add yourself. He even encouraged us to take a few extra marshmallows, and they were some of the best I've ever had. One thing to know before you go is that Dandelion Chocolate focuses on high-quality chocolate that isn't overly sweet. If you're expecting the sugary milk chocolate flavor of a candy bar, this is a different experience. The chocolate has a richer, more complex flavor, and we really enjoyed trying something different. Between the friendly staff, delicious treats, and unique experience, I'd definitely recommend adding it to your itinerary--just make sure you head to the café location if you're looking for food and drinks!
