I never had a chance to try any of the restaurants in the city before leaving for college, so it's nice to be able to explore parts of the city I grew up in. We came here on Saturday for brunch and there was no wait. Food: We ordered Roxanne Grande and Roxanne's French Toast. The portion was generous for two people. My mom and I were able to finish our order, but we were pretty stuffed. A classic brunch that included french toast, eggs, pancakes, sausages, and fruit. All of our food was cooked perfectly, a classic brunch. Service: Our waitress was great. It was a full restaurant, but we placed our order, refilled our waters, and received our check in a timely matter. We ate here during the FIFA World Cup, so my mom and I were not in a rush. It was all good vibes in the restaurant. Location: The restaurant is on a hill, and there's nearby street parking and a parking structure. We took Bart downtown, so from Powell St, it's just a small walk up the hill. That walk up that hill is a steep incline, but not too bad! There is a single bathroom stall near the cashier. When we were seated, on a Sunday morning, it was fairly busy. After 10min the hostess came over to tell us we wouldn't get food for at least 25-30min since she just sat a large group and her kitchen can't handle it! What??? We asked to get some coffee and had to go ask again. Food finally came and it was wrong, had to wait longer. Need some better staff management! 7 o'clock, I've got an appointment to drop my car off and get it serviced. I walk down and I see Roxanne's Café. I ate here years ago and had a good experience, so I walked in. I sat down in a little corner booth with Solomon Burke playing on their sound system. It was followed by a Rat Pack song, and now I'm listening to Ella Fitzgerald singing I Get a Kick Out of You. I'm so glad I stopped here, and I know that I made the right choice. I've got corned beef with eggs over easy in front of me and a good mug of coffee. Roxanne Cafe is easily one of the best brunch spots around Union Square. I had the steak and eggs, and it was incredible. Definitely one of the best breakfasts I have ever stumbled upon. The steak was full of flavor, cooked just right, and the potatoes on the side were fantastic, well-seasoned, and packed with flavor. I would have given it a 3 had it not been for so many service problems. I was looking for a new place to have lunch pre-ballet. I had seen reviews of Roxanne Cafe. I like eggs (until recently a fondness for eggs was not considered having expensive tastes!) and decided to try it out. I was seated promptly in a table in a back corner. That's fine, I would rather not be by the door. I had viewed menu on line and knew they served brunch cocktails. But no one brought me a drinks menu or asked me if I wanted a cocktail. I have been over 21 for many decades so that sure wasn't the issue. I had to tell them I would like a mimosa. First issue. I ordered Sonoma omelet and tea. When server left my table I realized she had not asked me what kind of toast I wanted. I decided not to make a big deal of it as I am OK with any kind but they still should have asked. Second issue. When tea is made with a tea bag, the consumer needs some sort of receptacle, like a saucer, to place tea bag. If left in cup past a certain time the tea becomes bitter. I had to set tea bag on my napkin which obviously got very soggy. Also I had to request sugar for my tea. Minor, but still. Third issue. The food was acceptable. Not spectacular but I don't expect Michelin star from corner diner. I had no problem eating it all. When I finished, the server removed my plate. They had a few desserts and i thought I would like some ice cream but she didn't ask if I wanted dessert. I waited for someone to return. And waited. And waited. A full 20 minutes by my watch. Had anyone passed near me I could have called to them but no one did. My table being in the back, I think they forgot all about me. I finally went to restroom mostly so I could walk past cashier so they could see me. They gave me the check. Because I had sat there for 20 minutes there was no time for dessert. I paid and left. The other problems were fixable. I did get my mimosa, I like all kinds of bread, they brought a fresh napkin and did bring the sugar when I asked. This was not. It might not sound like a big deal but the cumulative effect of so many issues was just too much. And I really did want dessert! It's pretty out of the way and for decent but not special food and bad service not worth a return visit. read more

I ordered a cheeseburger, which came in good time. I was given a brioche bun, but a lot of lettuce, perhaps too much. It wasn't cut either, so it was 70 percent lettuce and 30 everything else. It was juicy and the cheese was melted greatly, but the burger itself lacked flavor and tasted average. Not a bad place to go to, but if you're on a budget it's not ideal. Cokes are $5, burger was $20, and there's a gratuity fee with parties of 4 or more, which may surprise others. read more

Like, I'll think of this place if I ever have a bread pudding craving and need a quick place to pop into for it. The service was pleasant and thoughtful, although slightly aloof. Delicious breakfast! Had to find a convenient place to meet visiting relatives. Roxanne Café was the most suitable option for everyone. This was my first visit here, and I found the interior to be nice and the setup was comfortable. Our server was an older lady who (like me) spoke English with an accent, and was very kind and sweet. She took good care of our table and made sure everything came as we ordered. I ordered the Napa Omelet which came with Sautéed apples, brie cheese, fresh cilantro, mushrooms and almonds and was delicious. The coffee was good too. Others in our group seemed to enjoy their breakfast too. Being a North Beach resident, where breakfast options are plenty, I am not very likely to travel crosstown to Roxanne Café for breakfast any time soon, but if the opportunity came, I would welcome the opportunity to try another Omelet off their menu. read more

Came here on a late Sunday afternoon and it wasn't that crowded. The decor and furniture were a bit outdated, but gave an old school brunch place feel. I would've replaced a couple of tables that are a bit more worn down, but otherwise it did us just fine! The waitress was really nice and kept on checking if we were enjoying ourselves. The Roxanne's French Toast was honestly one of the best french toasts I've had. I usually don't opt in for sweet brunch items cause it gets too overbearingly sweet, but this place made it just right. They didn't tap on a bunch of sugar or poured a bunch of syrup on it. The blueberry cream cheese filling was perfectly smooth and the blueberries and strawberries on the top really brought the toast together. Roxanne's was a cute breakfast experience for our last day in San Francisco. My husband had the Joeys scramble, Oatmeal, and black coffee, and I ordered a croissant and a cappuccino. Everything tasted great, and we got there early so it was fairly quiet. By the time we finished eating, this little cafe was full of people and our sweet waitress seemed to be the only one tending to every single table with a little help from another woman who came a bit later. I'd say definitely try to have breakfast here, but I recommend arriving as close to opening time as possible unless you don't mind waiting. read more

My sister and I came on a Wednesday afternoon and there was no one, so we had the place to our selves for a bit. This was close to our hotel so we ducked in for breakfast for me and lunch for my husband. The pro: this place serves breakfast until 3 pm. The cons: the food was not good and was pricey. They seem to use processed ingredients when it comes to meat and cheese, and the egg scramble I got had more onion than egg or other ingredient. My associates and I were staying at the nearby Orchard Hotel - we ate breakfast here four mornings in a row, and lunch or dinner three times. Clearly, we were happy with the restaurant! If you're looking for upscale chi-chi dining, this isn't your place. This is a place full of comfort foods and locals. Excellent coffee. Tasty food. Attention to allergies, food preferences. Friendly staff. Zero to complain about. One thing I noticed and loved. There was a gentleman who came in after our party was seated, and he sat himself at a table next to an older woman obviously trying to read a book while eating alone. The only inappropriate thing about him was that he continued to talk to her despite her saying a couple of times that she had to get back to her book. There was nothing rude about it, but he clearly kept forgetting that he'd promised to stop talking, and continued in a friendly tone. We overheard him saying he was "homeless by choice" and that he'd sold his San Francisco house for a million dollars recently, was excited that a friend had offered him a place to stay in the Phillipines for $600 a month, which his social security would cover. The waitress asked if he was ready to eat now - apparently he'd ordered breakfast and then disappeared for an hour. She also asked if he could pay; she was very polite about it. He responded that he was still hungry! and she brought him a platter of eggs and salmon. The woman at the next table finally gave up and conversed with him for a while, urging him to eat, saying he was too skinny. When he confessed he could eat no more, she arranged to have the leftovers boxed and helped him do so. During all this time, the wait staff treated him with respect. When the bill came, the woman insisted on paying it, although he pulled out what appeared to be several credit cards from his pocket. He thanked her profusely and left. Personally, I'd rather eat at a homey restaurant that serves meatloaf at dinner as a main course, and treats human beings like human beings, than the fanciest place in town. read more
