Ain't nothing Royal at the Royal buffet. No hot water in restroom. Food tasted old and lack luster. Crab at hibachi station looked like leggo pieces. Best thing in there was the potatoes and they were trash worthy. read more

So delicious! There is a big jump in price from lunch to dinner.. the switch happens around 3pm.. I wish it was closer to 5pm to get the lunch price vs the dinner price. With that said, the food was very hot, fresh, and the buffet was completely full with a variety of options! They had great crab ragoons, all the traditional Chinese soups, and one of my personal favorites is Coconut shrimp (snow white shrimp) They had a lot of seafood too.. prong, crawfish, lobster, ect I do wish they had a few more chicken options.. such as orange chicken, Kung po chicken, and perhaps coconut chicken (snow white chicken) Also, they did have sushi.. but I didn't see any deep fried sushi. I wish that they had more cooked sushi and deep fried sushi. The service was average, and the atmosphere was average. The played traditional Chinese music.. This used to be our go to Chinese takeout joint. I took my children tonight for takeout and what used to cost us about $26 is now $57! If you want your money's worth, go elsewhere. The food is really greasy now. I always loved their green beans but now they have no flavor. They claim to give discounts for kids. Yet, when I took my 12 year old there for dinner, we were charged full price. The website showed they have crab legs. No crab legs when we went. We stopped in for dinner a week ago. We missed eating at our favorite spot since covid. We havn't been going anywhere and we decided to stop here for dinner. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not. A few days later we began to experience symptoms. We went to CVS for a covid test. Our family tested positive after visiting the Royal Buffet. It's so scary! We all wore a mask but once were seated we remove our mask to eat. We are now quarantining. I think we are going to avoid eating at restaurants for the moment. The staff are great and they all wear mask but when you remove your mask to eat it leaves you vulnerable to contract covid. Unless you look close, you're liable to miss this place, across Buchholzer from the defunct Chapel Hill Mall. Inside, very nice decor, helpful servers, decent prices (under $36, lunch for 3). I skipped the sushi & hibachi today - maybe next time. When i saw the green-lip mussels, was VERY happy. Have not seen them much around here, and i dearly love them - in black bean sauce, or any other way. Seafood salad was very nice also, ditto the mushroom dishes. Believe the bad reviews they are true. My husband loves Chinese buffets so when he sees one we have to go. He voluntarily left hungry if that tells you anything. The restaurant was largely empty at 6:30 pm which is a sign. There were four people standing at the counter and it still took a few minutes for them to acknowledge our presence and seat us. We were never greeted all they said was, "follow me." The buffet itself was on the smaller size. A station for salad, fried foods, entrees, seafood (for extra $$) hibachi and dessert. The egg rolls tasted mostly of the vegetable oil, there was not much filling. I tried the sesame chicken but it was like little rocks, my knife couldn't cut them. I didn't mind the pepper steak but it was heavily seasoned and had a weird after taste. I didn't try anything else my stomach already hurt. My husband said the egg drop soup was fresh and decent but that was it. It just wasnt good. Won't be back. Spent the rest of the night in the bathroom because of the visit. Yuck! read more

My boyfriend responded with "A coke" I said same thing for me please and was hit with a blank stare. Food smelt so good but when we went the fried rice was burnt and looked and tasted dated. Everything else was below average or was dry, they had bread rolls and garlic bread and it was stale and cold under the heat lamps??? Start off the food was fine but the service was TERRIBLE. So let's start out with the fact that my friend is special needs so things like splitting bills etc. is a hard thing for him. I tell the waitress before we sit that we're going to need separate bills. Shouldn't be that hard even with someone with limited English skills. We ate and were finishing up but I had to go to the restroom. I get a text from my buddy telling me the waitress is now yelling at him. I hurry up and go out and I have to explain to this woman that we told her separate bills before we even sat down and it finally sunk into her thick skull so she stomps off to the counter to split the bill. My buddy always pays in cash but I use my debit card for everything. I'm not thinking when I hand it back to her because I left the fortune cookie on the credit card tray so she picks it up and literally throws it across the table and stomps off with my card. By this time I'm biting my lip not to yell at her but she comes back, I make sure she gets the price of the meal and no tip. I didn't yell or complain to the manager because they just don't get how rude they are and I'd be wasting my breath and raising my blood pressure for nothing. If I would have written a review when this place first opened, It would have been a 5 star without a doubt. Service was top notch, the restaurant was clean, the food was awesome and the selection was just as good. However, over the last two years, this place has started to really ... well... suck. I give it three stars because there is never a wait to sit down. Its a cozy atmosphere and they have hard ice cream. The downfalls: They CHARGE BY THE POUND FOR CRAB LEGS NOW. WHAT??? Rip off. Secondly, they only put out small portions of food items at a time so you find yourself constantly waiting on something to be refilled. Another huge downfall is the slow service. It always takes a long time to be approached by a server for a drink order or to remove dirty plates from your table. The other issues I have with them are not enough beef/pork items on the buffet, the sushi selection is poor and its not fresh. The ice cream machine seems to always be out of order. BUMMER.
