    Kung pao chicken

Royal Garden is not only a place for a good, reasonably-priced meal, but also a step back into the past. We dropped in for the first time for dinner on Christmas Eve and now wonder why we never came into this neighborhood spot sooner. It is exactly like the Chinese restaurants I remember in the 70s and 80s, before they all converted into AYCE buffets in the 90s (a trend which thankfully died out). It's a simple, cozy, and friendly little restaurant in the Harris Teeter shopping center in Ocean View. They do not have any of the authentic, regionalized Chinese cuisine that we've wonderfully been exposed to in the last decade in the 757, but that's just fine. They have a large menu filled with all the Chinese-American classics, with almost every item priced under $10. Everything we had was excellent, well-above the class of the buffet Chinese food, and better than most of the local carryout Chinese food as well. Royal Garden delivers freshly-prepared delicious food at a price that comes in less than many fast food value meals. Not to mention, there's no additional charge for the time travel...

Combination Egg Foo Yung lunch special

We have eaten here a few times now and I have to say .. I'm loving their food and value. Yesterday my son and I went for the lunch specials. Soup is served first.. your choice of Hot and Sour, egg drop or won ton. We both got the Hot & Sour and it was the best I've had. I got the combination egg foo Yung. TONS of bbq pork, chicken and shrimp on top a crispy egg patty thingy. Rice and an egg roll. Very good!! He got the Lo Mein- also a ton of meat in his noodles. We each got drinks. Endless lemonade for him and a bottle Moutain Dew for me. All of this was only $17. 80 the lunch specials are a measly $5.75 each!!

I read the reviews. My gut said, "Are ya sure about this?" I said, why not, I see lots...saw lots of people eating there before. Gather list..who wants what? The order called in, orders paid for over phone "thank you 20 mins" Umm, (imagine old phones and dial tones) I'm hitting radial while screaming... at the imagined dial tone, not the worker. YOU DON'T HAVE MY ADDRESS.....redial redial repeat now I am 10 mins into the 20 mins... This story isn't over yet. I should have listened to my gut. This was THE WORST Chinese food I have ever eaten...EVER. By the time it arrived (the driver by the way..awesome!) we were hungry! Sign the receipt, Tip the driver... So, we start unloading the bag. Yeah, you guessed it, main course, NOPE. Food that we didn't order was sent in it's place,- why didn't I listen? Of course, now the line is engaged. 15 attempts to connect, I put it on speaker and continue to ring. nothing Now the food. Another reviewer asked, "how can they mess up Chinese fried chicken?" I dunno, but they have mastered the art. The food, is there a word worse than "bland?" I've eaten more seasoned food at an old people's home. NOTHING had a taste. I am NOT exaggerating. This was the worst meal I have ever eaten, really. I was taught to eat what was put before me. The attached pic is what was left. I literally could not stomach it. Yeah, it has been picked over, I was really hungry after all. But, I just couldn't. So now, we are off to look for something edible.

All the information on this site is related to the Royal Garden under its previous owners. The Royal Garden was sold shortly after the beginning of 2023. Unfortunately, the prices have increased dramatically. The quality of the food is not as good as it used to be. Last night I went into the restaurant and placed a to go order. I asked for extra mustard and no soy sauce or duck sauce. When I got home, there was soy sauce and duck sauce AND NO mustard. I ordered pork fried rice with no peas. When I got home, it had broccoli in it ! The portion sizes are smaller for the price. Last night was not the 1st time I have had issues with my order. I just never said anything before. The inside of the restaurant looks exactly the same as it has for many years. The new owners have not made any improvements. Not a good value for your money. I am posting a copy of the new menu so you can decide for yourself.

This is yummy Chinese food. The restaurant is simple and Chinese style elegant, with peach table clothes and cloth napkins and a whole pot of oolong when you order hot tea. The same sweet lady has waited on us both times we've been in, and they are great at personalizing your order with any special request. The seafood in the seafood dishes is fresh, and they have good hot and sour soup. They deliver, which is always nice, and their chicken on a stick has a great sear on it (essential in my book). I don't have any complaints, but four stars, because it has to be ah-may-zing to get fiver from me.

Plastic in the food, wrong order at that.

I ordered a seafood delight and a few other items. The seafood delight was completely wrong. It did have shrimp in it, but aside from that, it was a completely different item. I was annoyed, but hungry. After a few bites, I felt something weird as I was chewing. Kinda crunchy but not. I pulled it out, it was a 7 inch long piece of plastic! So yeah, the screw up your order and are immensely unsafe. I called them back. The lady said they would send a person out right away. They did, but pretty much told me to go to Hell on a refund. So yeah. Good luck on getting the right order, much less even safe to eat food.

My orange chicken, mostly won ton noodles.

I absolutley do not recommend this place. I ordered from here during the lockdown to support local businesses and I'm trying to order from different places so this was the first time I've ordered from here. I paid over the phone when I ordered and when it was delivered, the driver demanded I pay again in cash! My fiance had to show her his bank statement on his phone to prove he had already paid! AND THEN THEY CHARGED US AGAIN WHEN THE DRIVER GOT BACK TO THE RESTAURANT! She didn't want to give us our money back when we complained the next day! After I had tipped the driver 50%IN CASH! I'm confident that my bank will handle that situation. Now, on to the food...I ordered the Orange Chicken. It was the worst I've ever had! It was mainly orange peels, dried peppers and the crunchy coating that the chicken is fried in. I got hardly any chicken! The night I ordered it, I ate it out of the container because, why not? The next day I went to eat leftovers for lunch and when i dumped it out onto my plate, I saw that HALF THE CONTAINER WAS WON TON NOODLES! They filled it halfway with those cheap crunchy noodles AND THEN filled it with food! I've never had any Chinese restaurants do this! They are a total RIP off and don't deserve anyone's business! STOP RIPPING PEOPLE OFF!

Egg Foo Yung after I began eating it...

Very nice decor, palatial, clean, inviting. Food was "ok," to me. Nothing to draw me back again, given it's distance from my home. I happened upon this from doing a search on "Yelp," so... that's how I got here. I ordered "Shrimp Egg Foo Yung," and have to tell you, NEVER has it ever been served to me, with shrimp on the outside, covering the patty with gravy. This is a lifetime first, and I am 56 years old; I've hand this dish thousands of times over the course of my life. NEVER, has this ever happened. The ribs were ok. I liked they they didn't have a lot of sauce, but this really made these dry and without real flavor. Apparently it won "GOLD" for best Chinese Restaurant in Norfolk. Don't know how, but, "ok." Maybe by default, as it may be the only "dine-in" Chinese Restaurant in Norfolk. Don't know. I'd come again, asking them next time to put my shrimp inside of the Egg Foo Yung pattie.

Kung Pow Chicken - extra spicey, extra peanuts everytime.

I called earlier in the day to see if we should make reservations, but was told they wouldn't be busy. Well, we got there and while they had plenty of tables at 6:30PM, but 7PM that place was completely packed! They had lots of carry-out orders happening too, which all made the kitchen a little slow. We ordered many dishes to share and all started coming out one after another over the next hour until the beef & broccoli was the last dish. Again, I attribute the slowness of the kitchen to their being so busy. At least all the food that came out was very fresh, tasty, and piping hot. Some interesting items that were quite good were their potatoes and green peppers. This dish is something I've never seen before but was pretty good! It features long julienned potatoes that they clearly soak in water before wok'ing with the peppers - that was all that was in the dish, but it was still tasty. Their Fish in Chili Oil & Bean Sprouts was really tasty and fresh! The fish is flounder. Their spicy wontons in chili oil were very popular with our group too. Service here was friendly too and helpful. Like I said, we tried many items, so many more than I just outlined and all were nice. I'd definitely return for a slightly more elevated Chinese menu from what you get at the typical Chinese-American joints.

It is one of those things where one place might have great fried rice, one has great egg rolls, and another has great lo mein. Overall the food was good as I went with the General Tsos combo that comes with regular fried rice but for a small upcharge if you want to change the rice to pork or shrimp. To me it is still unusual as I thought ham fried rice was just a normal thing that comes with a dinner combo along with an egg roll. Not anymore. I ordered an eggroll (2 per order) to go with the meal along with a teriyaki stick. The teriyaki stick (you get 2 per order) was pretty good and not dried out to the point where it could pass for jerky. The chicken in the dinner was good and not overly breaded. It was supposedly spicy but trust me anyone could handle this spice. Good spot to quench your hankering for some American Chinese food. Parking can be a bit iffy with a few spaces in the front on the street shared with other restaurants but the same holds true for the spaces behind the building.
