Royal Garden is nice sized Chinese restaurant that has plenty of seating and great customer service. The restaurant is in a shopping center in the Ocean View section of Norfolk. I've been here a few times over the years and will continue to pop in randomly. During today's visit I just wanted a snack as I'm going out to dinner later and it was already 2:30 when I came in. I ordered the he. egg drop soup and some crab and cream cheese wontons. The soup was a deep golden orange color and was rather thick. I liked it. The wontons were packed full and very creamy. I would order them again. There is a sign on the door stating that they will be closed from June 1, 2026-July 31, 2026 for scheduled renovations. read more

I hate to do this but I have to rate the restaurant lower because of the horribly strong Raid bug spray smell that slaps you at the door and lingers as you get smaller whiffs at your table. I'm glad they do pest control, but it should have been done at the end of the day. The egg drop soup was really good and the crispy noodles had a great nutty crunch. The crab Rangoon had actual crab. I ordered my egg foo young without meat since it's lent. The waitress was able to accommodate me. It was excellent and the gravy was heaven. Royal Garden is not only a place for a good, reasonably-priced meal, but also a step back into the past. We dropped in for the first time for dinner on Christmas Eve and now wonder why we never came into this neighborhood spot sooner. It is exactly like the Chinese restaurants I remember in the 70s and 80s, before they all converted into AYCE buffets in the 90s (a trend which thankfully died out). It's a simple, cozy, and friendly little restaurant in the Harris Teeter shopping center in Ocean View. They do not have any of the authentic, regionalized Chinese cuisine that we've wonderfully been exposed to in the last decade in the 757, but that's just fine. They have a large menu filled with all the Chinese-American classics, with almost every item priced under $10. Everything we had was excellent, well-above the class of the buffet Chinese food, and better than most of the local carryout Chinese food as well. YOU DON'T HAVE MY ADDRESS.....redial redial repeat now I am 10 mins into the 20 mins... This story isn't over yet. I should have listened to my gut. This was THE WORST Chinese food I have ever eaten...EVER. By the time it arrived (the driver by the way..awesome!) we were hungry! Sign the receipt, Tip the driver... So, we start unloading the bag. Yeah, you guessed it, main course, NOPE. Food that we didn't order was sent in it's place,- why didn't I listen? All the information on this site is related to the Royal Garden under its previous owners. The Royal Garden was sold shortly after the beginning of 2023. Unfortunately, the prices have increased dramatically. The quality of the food is not as good as it used to be. Last night I went into the restaurant and placed a to go order. I asked for extra mustard and no soy sauce or duck sauce. When I got home, there was soy sauce and duck sauce AND NO mustard. I ordered pork fried rice with no peas. When I got home, it had broccoli in it ! The portion sizes are smaller for the price. Last night was not the 1st time I have had issues with my order. I just never said anything before. The inside of the restaurant looks exactly the same as it has for many years. The new owners have not made any improvements. Not a good value for your money. My family and I have been to Royal Garden twice, and will definitely return again! It is a small restaurant, but the ambiance is pleasant and appealing, with tasteful decor and soothing Chinese music in the background. It is not usually crowded, and we have had no problem being seated immediately upon arrival. The food is wonderful- we have tried the Moo Shu chicken, egg rolls (crispy and fresh), General Tso's chicken, and pork Pancit. Everything was delicious! The staff is gracious and accommodating. This is yummy Chinese food. The restaurant is simple and Chinese style elegant, with peach table clothes and cloth napkins and a whole pot of oolong when you order hot tea. The same sweet lady has waited on us both times we've been in, and they are great at personalizing your order with any special request. The seafood in the seafood dishes is fresh, and they have good hot and sour soup. They deliver, which is always nice, and their chicken on a stick has a great sear on it (essential in my book). I ordered a seafood delight and a few other items. The seafood delight was completely wrong. It did have shrimp in it, but aside from that, it was a completely different item. I was annoyed, but hungry. After a few bites, I felt something weird as I was chewing. Kinda crunchy but not. I pulled it out, it was a 7 inch long piece of plastic! So yeah, the screw up your order and are immensely unsafe. I called them back. The lady said they would send a person out right away. They did, but pretty much told me to go to Hell on a refund. I ordered from here during the lockdown to support local businesses and I'm trying to order from different places so this was the first time I've ordered from here. I paid over the phone when I ordered and when it was delivered, the driver demanded I pay again in cash! My fiance had to show her his bank statement on his phone to prove he had already paid! AND THEN THEY CHARGED US AGAIN WHEN THE DRIVER GOT BACK TO THE RESTAURANT! She didn't want to give us our money back when we complained the next day! After I had tipped the driver 50%IN CASH! I'm confident that my bank will handle that situation. Now, on to the food...I ordered the Orange Chicken. It was the worst I've ever had! It was mainly orange peels, dried peppers and the crunchy coating that the chicken is fried in. I got hardly any chicken! The night I ordered it, I ate it out of the container because, why not? The next day I went to eat leftovers for lunch and when i dumped it out onto my plate, I saw that HALF THE CONTAINER WAS WON TON NOODLES! Very nice decor, palatial, clean, inviting. Food was "ok," to me. Nothing to draw me back again, given it's distance from my home. I happened upon this from doing a search on "Yelp," so... that's how I got here. I ordered "Shrimp Egg Foo Yung," and have to tell you, NEVER has it ever been served to me, with shrimp on the outside, covering the patty with gravy. This is a lifetime first, and I am 56 years old; I've hand this dish thousands of times over the course of my life. NEVER, has this ever happened. The ribs were ok. I liked they they didn't have a lot of sauce, but this really made these dry and without real flavor. Apparently it won "GOLD" for best Chinese Restaurant in Norfolk. Don't know how, but, "ok." This has always been my little go-to Chinese restaurant but I have noticed some changes since the new owner recently took over. The egg drop soup is still as yummy but the wonton skins that accompany the soup are definitely not the same and are even a bit stale tasting. And oh how I miss the egg rolls that I often craved. These have been replaced with the chew crusted factory version egg rolls that you find at every Chinese fast food restaurant in the City. If you've lived in America for a week you know what "American Chinese" is. However, if you're the second type then this place is fantastic. The flavor is full, the rice is steaming and the fortune cookies tell stories. I'm really picky when it comes to my kung pow chicken extra spicey extra peanuts. And let me tell you, this place nailed it. Perfect amount spice without being overly sauced or salty. Even the lo mein noodles were succulent. I'm definitely going to order from this place again. I only recently discovered this little gem. Their delivery time is fast, usually within 35-40 minutes. I enjoy their wonton soup, bbq ribs and general Tso's chicken. They have great standard chewiness dishes and are relatively inexpensive. It's not fancy but the food is good quality and you'll get it quickly. read more

First and foremost, a lot of these reviews are of the wrong place as this place does not serve sushi. Now, as for the food, it's bleh. It's your typical Chinese-American food. The General Tso's Chicken is pretty good, the Hot and Sour Soup is pretty good (pretty sour too) and I love the wontons they bring out with the soup. My family and I moved away from Ocean View several years ago and this was our favorite Chinese restaurant while we lived there. While we were back in town, we decided to stop in for lunch. The decorations on the walls were just as we remembered, with pink tablecloths and gold chairs, and we were pretty sure the vase of faux flowers at the register was the same from years ago. But who cares, we were there for the food. Lunch specials were $5.69 for an entree, soup, egg roll, and fried rice. What a deal! The egg rolls were the best in town, just as we remembered. The chicken lo mein was delicious as was everything else. Due to Covid several tables were closed to allow for social distancing, and the food was served in to go containers to minimize touching. I don't even want to give them one star but I had to. Called and ordered House Special Egg Foo Young from Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant for my friend who is an African American male. He went and picked up his food and discovered it wasn't right when he got home. He took the food back and they refused to remake it for him. After making him wait at least fifteen minutes the woman there named Lisa took the food very rudely and said they would put the money back on the card. When I asked how long it would take to get the money back on the card over the phone she got very rude and said to call our bank. I asked her why she couldn't tell me and she said she would call the police and hung up on me. He had me on Facetime and I felt like he was being very discriminated against by them. Even to the extent of hearing one of them say a racial slur I won't repeat. I am a manager at a well known hotel chain and I deal with customer service every day and this place is not the place to go if you want the food that you ordered and you want good customer service. I ordered for delivery and I didn't know that wonton with egg drop isn't on the menu but they mixed it for me, also made my kung pao extra spicy, and since the 2 litre I ordered was room temp they offered to give me ice in a separate container. If that wasn't enough they called me back to ask me if I wanted a Coke because I ordered a Pepsi, lol. The food was good, but the customer service was so great I had to tell someone else. read more
