Over a year ago we stopped coming to Royal Taj, but we are back now. We had left because of rude, poor service and nan that was delivered at the end of the meal. But the last few times we came here, service was good, and the nan arrived in time to enjoy with the meal. I think its because they brought the manager back from another store. I'm an Indian food fanatic, and despise most americanized "indian-chic" restaurants. This is NOT one of them. About the only way to get better Indian food is to go to London. The tandoori is incredible - the naan is perfect, and their masala is to die for. The ONLY reason that I ding 'em a star is that because I have blond hair, when I ask for uber-spicy, the assumption is that I don't really know what spice is, so it's served american-bland. I've been a customer at Royal Taj for years and, after a few terrible experiences recently, I will not be coming back. First, the menu has changed drastically to include a more expensive, lesser quality version of what they used to serve. Tonight I ordered through DoorDash: the Chef's Special Thali with a side of extra Raita and extra Naan. Not only did we not receive ANY Naan whatsoever (and instead an entire container full of white rice), the food showed up in complete disarray due to a terribly poor job packing the order. I should also note that the order on the receipt is correct but the food is completely wrong clearly indicating that no one checked the ticket before the food left the restaurant. The icing on the cake is when I called the restaurant to ask if they could deliver us the correct order and the response was "if you come down here, we can help you out. We can't bring the food to you". Isn't that the point of delivery? Long story short: We paid extra for things we never received, their prices have been jacked up and their customer service is a joke. It had been a few years since I've had the buffet at Royal Taj, just decided to go today, on a Wednesday, probably won't do that again, due to the choices on the buffet. I think Friday is a better day, as they have always had Sag Paneer, but today it was Mattar Paneer, and although I eat peas, I prefer spinach. The buffet had no rice, and I had to ask for it, admittedly they had just opened at 11:30AM, and I walked in as they opened. I waited a few mins. hoping the buffet would be well stocked, but it wasn't many empty spots without a tray of food. I waited a bit longer, finally the rice came. Nothing in it, just white rice.I was hoping it was Biryani. There was chicken makanwala, and it was a while until they put out tandoori chicken, no other meat curries were available. I had eaten half my meal before I received any Nan, which I had already asked for 10 mins. into eating. I was given one small piece. What the heck? It doesn't cost that much, does it? When I went back to the buffet, I saw they had put lots of it in a dish on the buffet. Who knew it was even there? I had no idea, it would be self serve, as it didn't use to be. As I ate, the appearance of their carpet, appears old and filthy, and it didn't entice my appetite. There were only 4 or 5 other customers around noon when I was there, but their phone kept ringing, I think for take-out orders. My food was nice, and everything was fresh and hot. I went back for Gulab Jamun and some Kheer, and both were delicious. The rice, (kheer) had slivered almonds in it Nice. My waiter who brought water, and also seated me, was not friendly, and did not ask if I needed anything, I had to flag down someone else to ask for the Nan. I have eaten here for the past 20 years or so, and can see some small changes, however, I still think this is a good place to eat, for a good price. $11.96, that includes the tax. Although I would have liked to see other foods on their buffet, like Aloo Ghobi, (potatoe & caulifower), besides sag paneer, I will go again, as their food is tasty, although some of it was very spicy, that's no problem for me. I like the food here as it is North Indian, Punjabi cuisine, quite different than south Indian cuisine. I had a small serving of their Raita, and as usual it was fresh and tasty. If I could change anything, it might only be to install a new carpet, and be ready with a FULL buffet, when the doors open at 11:30. I heard other customers also asking for Nan, and they were told it's coming. We all waited, and waited. I saw many employees so it's hard to know why they weren't more prepared for opening time. Chicken was good okay portion but the problem was the lamb dish had hardly any lamb maybe four pieces total and it was very disappointing since it could've been a good dish for $20 they could've put in some more, obviously they're trying to cut corners and save money but that was ridiculously small portion of lamb on the other hand the rice was almost too much probably enough for four people -food is good in general but it was obvious they were somehow trying to save money by giving small portion size of meat. read more

I think the food is dry. The reason why the chicken is dry is for a good reason but not executed correctly: they took out the skin to be healthy. Paneer was kind of cold-cheese-cubey in texture, but the saag was made healthily as well. Their gulag jamun is the one from the supermarket. But their spicy puffed crackers are quite good! But their selection is very limited. Service is quick and attentive. But given the food taste, I don't think that the Royal Taj is very "royal" at all. read more

Hands down worst Indian food i have had in South Bay. We ordered 2 biryani (veg and chicken) for Togo. It was just flavored rice with some frozen veggie/chicken mixed in. Went to Royal Taj a few days ago. Have been going there for many years, sorry to say will not be going back. Because of covid and beyond, the wonderful buffet is gone, probably for good, assuming from their remodel. Seems like there is also a different chef and the food is MUCH more expensive! Quality is not neearly as great as it was before, either. You have to buy each dish separately, and it costs a fortune. They don't even give you free refills on chai or naan, for goodness sake, or include rice with your lunch or dinner! Sorry, Royal Taj. I know times are difficult because of covid, but this new menu and prices are utterly ridiculous! We were wondering why the dining room was empty except for us, and now we know why! The brothers (?) who operate the front area of the restaurant are very attentive and provide excellent service. We were in the mood for Indian, and since this place is really close to our house we decided to give it a try. BIG MISTAKE!!! We were seated right away, but then waited awhile for someone to take our order. When a server finally arrived, I asked him if a certain chicken dish was white or dark meat. He then informed me that ALL the dishes were thigh meat. My husband and I only like white meat, but since we were already there, and it seemed rude to get up and leave we decided to give it a try. We shared chicken tikka masala, naan, and rice. I am not at all experienced with Indian food, but my guy has eaten Indian a bit, and said he never had such spicy chicken tikka masala. It wasn't an inedible level of spice, but not what we were expecting. He also told me he had never been to an Indian restaurant that didn't serve white meat. The naan was good, but that can't be that hard to do. To top it off the people working there were very unpleasant. Scowling, slamming plates, and table settings down. Really? In this economy you're going to act like that? I will be eating Indian again, just not here. Seriously, avoid this place,if not because of the food, then because of the service. 5 stars may be excessive for Royal Taj's service, location, and food, but I've been coming here for so long that I have too deep an emotional bond with the restaurant to give it anything less than a firm 5 star review. The staff knows my face as well as those of my parents because we we have been eating there so long. Whenever they see me walk to in to collect my phone order (which is ALWAYS chicken saag, aloo gobi, and baingan bharta with naan) they smile and ask how we're doing and all that. You can't underrate attentive staff. The food is very good, but I've heard some people complain about the authenticity. I've since I lack the expertise to make a similar judgement myself, I am going to review the food purely on flavor. And OMG yummers. I love Royal Taj's food. It's northern style Indian in case you were wondering, which is the stereotypical curry fare. The meat is usually quite good but I have had some lamb here that was a bit too game-y for my tastes. The naan is tender and has a wonderful smokey flavor from the high heat of the ovens. My favorite dish is the aloo gobi, which is always so salty and delicious. Writing this from my chair in The Netherlands, I'm becoming quite nostalgic for the food back in San Jose. Royal Taj is definitely on the top of my list for food to eat once back in the Bay. read more

Register is to the left as you enter and the small buffet is directly ahead from the entrance. The buffet is definitely small and limited BUT it's only $7.99. There are some condiments, couple desserts and few veggies (corn, peas, cauliflower) and 3 kinds of chicken - tandoori chicken, chicken masala and one other kind of chicken with rice. Fresh naan is served at the table. I heard the lady asked about the tandoori chicken and here you can get 8 pieces for $9.99 - that's a great deal! Hubby and friend had a mango lassi ($2) and it was good - great mango flavor and not super thick. I had the chai and it was good, you have to add your own sugar. The service was very attentive. They come to pick up your empty plates, refill your water glass and check to see if you would like more naan. The naan was definitely freshly made - hot and soft, perfect to soak up the sauce. This lunch only came to just above $40 including tax, not too bad for Indian buffet. No other restaurant choice nearby, just fast food including Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Foster Freeze and Subway. read more

I love this restaurant. As many people have noted, the chicken tikka masala is excellent, but I don't think I've ever had a bad dish here at dinner. However, my favorite dish is navrattan koorma. As a confirmed, dyed-in-the-wool carnivore, a veg dish would have to be pretty damn good for me to pick it as my favorite, but there it is. It's just super delicious. The lunch buffet there is actually not my favorite in the South Bay, but it's not bad. The tandoori chicken is very tasty and you get fresh-made naan with your meal. As many people have noted, the old dude can seem a bit... severe, but he will actually talk to you if you've gone there a few times, and he might even crack a smile once in a while. I don't think he's unfriendly, he's just not a cuddly-warm kinda guy. The rest of the staff is very nice however. All in all, it reminds me of having dinner at a friend's house if the dad is a little grumpy, in a good-natured way. So, yeah, if you want someone to hug and kiss you on the cheek when you walk in the door, this is not the restaurant for you. We've been coming here for over 25 years. We go there almost every week but last couple of times I've been watching the chefs and they are very dirty. I see their hairs being open and the way they cook isn't the cleanest. We've found hair in our food so many times and the hair being open explains why. If your in the food industry you can be courteous and at least cover your hair because no matter what there is hair falling. I think we will be giving this place a break. This place is also very very dirty. They don't ever vacuum or clean properly after each table leaves. read more

The first time I came here was for a company lunch because it was right next to the spa I work at. We had the lunch buffet and I didn't love all of the dishes, but the ones that I liked.. I reallly liked (Spinach with spices)! I especially love the Naan that they serve because it is so fresh and moist. To top it off, the servers were very friendly and helpful. The second time I came, I missed the lunch buffet so I came for the dinner. It was a bit pricey compared to the lunch, but it was all good food. This is probably the worst place to eat!! Not just for Indian food but just food in general is the worst I've ever had in my life! I thought 3rd time is a charm but it seems more like food poisoning. The chicken was uncooked and it had a stale stink to it. Just like the service the food stinks...
