I was the only patron. The host ignored me when I came in, so I asked some of the workers, they responded by talking to the host in thai, I assume to seat me. Even though I was the only one, the waitress was inattentive, their portion sizes were small and they had no background music, which is fine, as long as you don't have noisy kitchen equipment, which they did. My friends liked their curries, however the friend that ordered the Pad Thai said it tasted like ketchup and tamarin sauce she could've made at home....LOL I didn't try it, but my other friends said she was exaggerating and it wasn't that bad. However, in another Yelp review we discovered someone describing the Pad Thai as tasting of "old socks." Yelpers be warned. Extremely disappointed. I ordered Pad See Ew to go, and when I opened the box, the noodles were white and plain like there were no seasonings or sauce on them. It was like they forgot to add sauce. The food also smelled flavorless. In addition to the lack of flavor, the only vegetable in the dish was broccoli. Every other Thai restaurant I've patronized there has at least included carrots or another vegetable as well in their pad see ew dish. My boyfriend ordered the pad Thai, and it was also under flavored, but it at least contained sauce. Will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

I've always loved Thai food and when I heard that Royal Thai opened up, I was excited to try it. My girlfriend and I took a couple of our kids and had a wonderful time. Staff was really friendly and the atmosphere was cozy. The food was wonderful and the price was reasonable. We were noticing the beautiful garnishes on each plate and wondered how they carved carrots and other vegetables into flowers and other shapes, so we asked. The waitress came to the table with her "kit" and began to show us how she did it. It was so cool (and very nice) and soon the entire dining room was watching. She ended up going around and doing a quick demo at each table. A great experience all around and I highly recommend it for a nice meal. read more

Having been to many Thai restaurants I can give this one a genuine 4 stars. They had many unique options and every dish is made to order depending on the meat you want in it. They also offer tofu as an option if you don't want meat. They have a great selection of Curry's and the one we ordered was absolutely delicious. We order the pumpkin curry and especially enjoyed the way the slight sweetness of the pumpkin married together so well with the spicier curry flavors. We also had the opportunity to try the Fresh Rolls which come with a few options of which you get to pick two. We chose mango and avocado. These were a great fresh start to our meal and the sauces they served them with were perfect. Don't forget to order a Thai iced tea, if you've never had one, they are sooo good. My boyfriend went in to get our food, they said they hadn't received any orders under that name. I called and explained that I couldn't go in because I didn't have my mask (sorry- we don't share our masks) she then said "whoops, it's right here sorry." Totally get it, wouldn't want to give a stranger someone else's meal on accident, but maybe a little investigating on their part would've solved that if they thought be that was the case? My main issue is that I clearly stated twice that I wanted spring rolls, she insisted I meant "crunchy rolls" and was given egg rolls. Pad Thai is already tasting funky as if it was an old batch thrown in the microwave, and finding two strips of hard plastic mixed in isn't the most appetizing. Not sure how this place is still in business when you compare it to Auburn Thai Garden. Been trying to give this place a chance for the last ~ 5 years. The food is very bland/poorly seasoned and when they do try to add flavor to things they simply lack the ability to get it right. Please do yourself a favor and go to Auburn Thai Garden just up the road, you'll be happier and your wallet will thank you as well. If the restaurant is reading this, please go to Auburn Thai Garden or Orchid Thai in Lincoln and taste their menu. It is so much better. Service was not good, they brought out our rice 20 minutes before our curry, then only brought my husbands food and we waited another 15 minutes for mine. Meanwhile he had no utensils to eat his food with. Stopped here for some dinner on our way to Penn Valley and were seated right away! Very mellow vibe for a chilly Friday night (or maybe it just seemed quiet cause I'm from the city haha!) I love the atmosphere, it has a very professional yet cozy feel to it! Employees here are pretty nice! Checking up on us every now and then, and always refilling our water which I appreciate. However the first time one of the ladies refilled my water I guess she poured it too quick and it spilled out and onto our table.. All she did was say "Oh oops!" and then she left.. I mean of course I understand accidents happen but can you at least help fix it? LOL looking back at it is kinda funny now cause we had to use the table cloth to dry up the spill ourselves but in the moment I was VERY annoyed (being hungry didn't help.) Minus one star, wehhh. Ordered pad thai, pineapple fried rice with calamari, and some chicken skewer type appetizer that came with a peanut-y dip (forgot the name)! Average wait time, didn't keep track but it felt fine haha. Would definitely recommend all 3 dishes! They also added these cool beets carved/cut into a flower! A nice touch. The servings are generous and the taste does not disappoint! So good. Today I ordered food to-go, only to return home and discover that BOTH noodle dishes were left without sauce! How on earth does this happen?! "Oops" they say. So here I sit looking at 2 bland boxes containing dry noodle clumps stuck together with over cooked meat and a sad assortment of steamed veggies. The service was OUTSTANDING. A cut above. My son mentioned wanting some tofu, and the server brought him a skewer of it! The dishes were quite hit and miss tho. Starting with the negative, so we can end on a high note: The lemon grass soup had a tomato base. I have never had it that way before. It was still good, just not quite what I was expecting and not much chicken for the price. The Pad Thai, which should be a signature dish, also had an oddly tomatoey base. The noodles were also quite mushy. It was not my favorite. HOWEVER: the fresh rolls were amazing with succulent shrimp and yummy sauces and plenty of mint. Also, the pineapple fried rice was worth the trip alone! Delish! I would say this is a 5 star restaurant IF you know what to order. I will be back for more pineapple fried rice, rolls, delicious Thai iced tea and to try the avodcado curry. 8) My kids enjoyed the ambiance, although if it were busier I would have felt a bit uncomfortable having my kiddos there. Oh Royal Thai, I love you. This is my favorite restaurant in Auburn. I've never had a disappointing meal, and they have a terrific lunch special. I recommend the stir-fry option Cashew Nut w/ chicken, or Pad Thai with chicken or shrimp. For around 10 bucks you get your entree, salad, choice of a side-dish and rice during their lunch hours (11:00-2:00 I think). The Thai Noodle Soup with chicken and beef is huge and delish, plenty of leftovers. Also, I really enjoy the salmon which comes in a lemony/coconut inspired sauce that is out of this world. If you really want to plump up, try the mango sticky rice. It's heaven...just love this little place. Tastefully decorated, sweet servers and never disappoints! read more

Our party of 12 visited Royal Thai recently while in the area for a conference. I'm so very glad we did - the experience here was a perfect capstone to a very full week. Our waitress Jup was fantastic. Sharp, funny, and thoughtful. Very accommodating of our group, and took fantastic care of us throughout the night. We tried all sorts of entrees - the potstickers were tasty, many chicken dishes and curries ranged from good to very good, but by far the standouts were the drunken noodles and avocado curry. Those two dishes were truly sensational - light but savory, perfectly seasoned, utterly delicious. I had never heard of an avocado curry before, and I was admittedly slightly skeptical, but you can be sure I will be trying the next one I see. I am genuinely looking forward to having an excuse to come back. read more

I've been to many Thai restaurants and this place bears the dubious distinction of cooking some of the worst Pad Thai I've ever had. I bit into the dry dish with bad flavor and shook my head. No one should shake their head over Pad Thai. It was tough to finish the it, I just didn't want to waste me money. The location was old and a bit run down, but that's not an excuse for bad food. After a fabulous weekend to Reno, Virginia city and Tahoe, we were driving back home to San Francisco and on the way we stopped by at Royal Thai Restaurant for lunch for one main reason - we are vegetarians and this places said vegan on yelp! As we entered, there was a lady to greet us and interior of this place was authentic Thai. They have some outdoor seating as well for a sunny/warm day. I got my pan fried noodle soup and hubby got eggplant-tofu curry with Jasmine rice, they both were YUMMMMMM!! My soups portion was large so I got it to-go and yes! Wow, if I lived closer I'd eat here every week! Tom Kha Soup was very flavorful. Just the right amount of lemongrass. Thai spring rolls amazing. Never seen options for toppings (mango, tofu, avocado, etc.). Pad Thai was very good although I've had better pad Thai elsewhere. It was more subtle flavors that didn't pop out. If I could give No Stars I would. If the apathetic host wasn't a solid sign the food delivered the message loud and clear. "We Don't Care". It was the WORST food I can recall. The chicken satay was so stringy and bland I'm pretty sure it was cooked from frozen. The padtai was like a tasteless soup and looked like dirty dish water. The Jungle Prince some how had both tough over cooked pork and barely heated raw veggies with a sauce that was SO sweet it turned our stomachs. When we took the food back in to give it back to them they were unavailable as their door dash delivery from Taco Bell had come in. I'll never spend 40 bucks on this highly suspect food again. I do NOT give 5 stars often, but this place deserved it! My husband and I decided to take a drive up north (we live in Sacramento) to Auburn with my mom to get out of town, get a bite to eat and cruise around some of the local shops. It was chilly but a beautiful, sunny day in Auburn. We hadn't been to old town Auburn or really hung out there at all, so we used our iphones to help us narrow down a list of restaurants we should check out. At first we wanted to eat at Pelican's Roost Fish and Chips but just up the street was a Thai place that struck our fancy... and that's how we came to The Royal Thai. This is a quaint restaurant with eclectic decor, great customer service, extremely clean and neatly kept. I loved that about the place. I loved the decorations, I loved our server, I LOVED that the bathroom was spotless and everything was neat. But most of all, I LOVED the food! Hands down some of the yummiest Thai food I've had in a long while. Everything was fresh -- and I mean FRESH! Our server, after taking our orders and after we got our food, was sitting a few tables back making origami style garnishes out of fresh carrots and radishes. It was beautiful! My mom loved the way she carved them that she ended up giving my mom a to-go box full of carved carrot flowers, just because they were pretty (and she told my Mom they would be perfect in her salads) :) I had the Panang seafood curry, my husband had the chicken green curry and my mom had the Veggie Medley with seafood. The seafood mix was delish -- had all kinds of yummy seafood in it, including squid, tilapia, mussels, crab, scallops, etc. All of our meals were delish but they all kept wanting to try mine, it was the best! I forgot to mention that we also had the shrimp spring rolls as an appetizer and I had a Thai iced tea - both of which were delish! Everything was affordable and the servings were plentiful. We had to take our food to go bc the servings were large. The Panang curry with seafood mix was $15, the Medley veggies with seafood mix was $15 and my husband's chicken green curry was $9.95. Bascially most of the dishes, if ordered with the seafood mix, would be $15. Any of the dishes with chicken or beef would be $9.95 and just shrimp would be $12 (I think). The spring rolls were $7. Like I said, all very affordable, especially for the portion sizes. This place was great! And we will definitely be taking another drive up from Sacramento JUST to eat here. read more

It's been a few months since our last visit; this review is based on Sunday afternoon meals over the past several years. You'll find the interior warm and inviting, along with the service. There's a lunch menu - $8.95 or $10.95, depending on choice of meat - that includes choice of entree, rice plus a side dish (e.g., spring rolls or satay). Garden rolls (I call 'em fresh rolls) $7.50. They're larger than most I've had and - well, fresh, and crunchy. All of the entrees I've had were on the expensive side, but generously portioned as well - as in, plan to take food home so you can enjoy the fun the next day too. If you stick with the basics - veggie, beef, chicken or pork - $9.95 will get you a really large serving. Prawns/calamari $12.95. "Seafood" which I think is fish - will set you back $15.95. Hot is really hot, so if you like your Thai spicy, you'll be happy. Washed down with Singha beer. That'll work. If you start your day hiking or mtn biking in the American River canyon, you can follow it up with a rewarding repast in downtown Auburn. Sweat from the trail, then sweat from the food! read more

I am a HUGE fan of the "other" Auburn Thai restaurant, but was urged to give Royal Thai a shot. We arrived very close to closing time and the server was extremely gracious. In fact, we ended up keeping them there almost 1 1/2 hours past closing they continued to be gracious - very nice. There were 4 of us. We got an order of fresh rolls to share. The peanut sauce that came with the fresh rolls was not very good. Peanut sauce is one of those things, along with fresh rolls, that I use as a yard stick to measure a Thai restaurant by. The fresh rolls themselves, however, were quite good. Not the best, but a lot better than most. For an entree I got the Pra Rahm with tofu. I also had the chance to try Pad Thai with tofu. Both were pretty good, but see my previous comment on their peanut sauce. I found the Pad Thai to be kind of bland. The portions were pretty good sized and the prices were reasonable and, as previously stated, the service was really good. Bottomline: if I am in Auburn and Auburn Thai Garden is closed, then I would come here for a good Thai meal. read more

What!?!? Good Thai food East of Sac?! I was working in the Auburn area today and couldn't stand to do another sandwich lunch...all I wanted was a nice plate of pad thai! So I drove around downtown and stumbled upon this fancy little place. The initial walk-in authenticity decor and menu scan? Check. Great service? Check. Speaking Thai in the kitchen? Check. 4 different types of chili on request? CHECK! I ordered the lunch chicken pad thai "very spicy." I think they are a bit conservative on spicing up their dishes because I could taste next to no spiciness...so...I asked or a side of chili and WOAH MAMA! I was back in Bangkok with a nice serving tray of 4 chilis: chili padi in fish sauce, jalapenos, chili powder, and chili sauce. They get 5 stars just for that...seriously. The chicken seemed so-so though..just a tad dry for my taste. But anywho, to complement my fine noodle array (and although it was 8.95, it was a heaping plate and they gave you tom yum soup with it), I had a Thai iced tea which was super sweet and very delish. This place was just meh. I've been spoiled with really good thai food in both San Francisco and Elk Grove so I was looking forward to find some really delicious Thai in my new stomping ground. Unfortunately this was not it. I ordered the Panang curry (one of my main staples) and asked for them to make it mild. It was way too spicy for my taste and had no flavor. The curry was really runny, not your typical thicker Panang and the kicker was it listed all these yummy vegetables in the curry on the menu but I ended up with ONLY green beans!!! I did not just pay $10 for watery curry and green beans! Very disappointed On the plus side, the service was great and the brown rice was delicious. When all was said and done my meal was about $20 but I wouldn't rate it as more than a $10 meal. Overall I likely won't be returning. read more

Must agree with Matt on the price, steep for skimpy portions and average thai food. The service was on the slow side, on my one hour lunch break, it took them more than 1/2 hour to get our meals. How hard is it to get two lunch plates? I want to have time to enjoy my meals even when it's a lunch time. We ordered pad thai and green curry; pad thai is way too salty and almost no acidity to counter the salt at all. The curry was ordered at med-hot and it came out with very little hint of spice and salty. Bland and salty in the same dish, ummm! that's not a good sign. As far as the decor, what decor?, it seems like they put up couple Thai stuff on the wall and that's about it. The place is some what crowded because they pack too many seats in a tiny place and it's hard to maneuver around. One bathroom for over 50+ seats, come on, is a disaster waiting to happen. Stopped in on our way back to San Francisco from Tahoe on July 25th after we read the glowing reviews. There was one review out of 100 that said it was not good, and that was our experience as well. We ordered three items. The first item was the Salmon Salad. The salmon was overcooked and had a slightly off taste. It wasn't seasoned properly with salt and pepper or any thai spices. The dressing was like a sweet modified ranch. The greens were fresh. The second item, Pad Thai had no lemon grass, no fish sauce, no cilantro, a generous amount of tamarind paste, soggy peanuts, and no lime juice. The shrimp were nicely cooked. The third item, Gai Yang, tasted and seemed like partially reheated Costco rotisserie chicken. It wasn't grilled or barbecued, and hadn't been marinated in anything remotely like I've had hundreds of times before. It arrived barely warmed and some of it was still cold. The prices were higher than Manora's or Thai House 530 in San Francisco and the waitress never checked back with us to see if everything was okay. The bill was around $50 for these three items and tea. They had an extensive beer menu, so maybe the other reviewers have never had authentic thai food and mostly drink their tastebuds to stupidity?.
